Strange bot categorisation
Any idea about this one ? --Foroa (talk) 08:58, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- Let me see, the image is in use at ja:醫師神社.
- Category:Cities in Japan - it's probably used on some city page without a link to Commons so the bot travels up, at least the country is right. It looks like en:Category:Cities in Japan doesn't have a lot of links to Category:Cities in Japan. That would probably improve the results a lot.
- Category:Japanese culture - country is right :P
- Category:Shrines in Kagoshima prefecture - this category is on the article which uses this image
- Category:神社 - looks like another {{Categoryredirect}} is not on my redirect list. Otherwise it would have gone to Category:Shinto shrines right away.
- Quality of the categories could be improved by adding more commonscat links at the ja Wikipedia. Multichill (talk) 09:08, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- The bot is getting more clever. My comments relate mainly to long standing redirects (another one is fish/fishes) that seems not be taken into account. --Foroa (talk) 09:17, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- It might have to do with the fact that you don't have the {{Categoryredirect}} variant in you list. --Foroa (talk) 09:19, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- I know, it's on my list. Multichill (talk) 09:44, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Rolled back tagging
I've removed your {{Proposed}} tagging, that policy is codifying how things are already done here. Let's continue to discuss... ++Lar: t/c 13:19, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yes. First discus, than remove, that's the right order. Multichill (talk) 13:21, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- It's not a proposal, merely a codification of existing practice, and the tag was added incorrectly. You are edit warring by readding the tag. I suggest you revert yourself. ++Lar: t/c 13:47, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

All Berlin images to History of Berlin
Hello Multichill,
could just explain me why you move (or commanded to move) all uncategorized Berlin images from the German Federal Archive to Category:History of Berlin? Now it's quite difficult to recategorize them (or categorized them better) as they don't contain the Uncategorized-BArch-Template anymore. Actually, it was a unnecessary and rather senseless action. --Jcornelius (talk) 22:27, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- After four months we still have a lot of barch uncategorized files. These files all had something to do with Berlin so i put them in Category:History of Berlin. That's how categorization works. Uncategorized -> some general category -> more specific categories. Multichill (talk) 19:00, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Pages uncategorized which were rather blanked, harder to revert after your edits to them
File:Ichtus Icon for Stub.jpg, File:Darwin fish (1).png and File:Statue of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian.jpg were rather 'blanked' than uncategorized, i.e. licensing and similar information was also removed. I have not checked how many other pages you have added templates to vandalized versions of. Bots can certainly not distinguish between reasons for uncategorization, but, just in case you know how to fix it, I tell you that some vandalized pages might be using templates wich block some methods for reverting them because there is a non-vandal who has contributed to the page after the changes to be reverted. 84.76.139.180 12:58, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
- The new abusefilter should help in fighting page blanking vandalism. Multichill (talk) 18:58, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Licence missing in File:Dtr.svg?
Below it says "{{cc|2.5}}", so it is categorized. Alvaro qc (talk) 14:49, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
- {{cc|2.5}} is not a valid license, please pick one from Commons:Creative Commons copyright tags (for example {{Cc-by-2.5}}). Multichill (talk) 14:51, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Images:Rino.fisichella-a-lodi.JPG and Cucciolo-bracco-italiano.JPG
I categorized this image as Archbishops and Animnals, why you say that I didn't giva a category? Thank you to help me.
Rei Momo (talk) 07:18, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
- No you didn't, my bot did. Please take a look at the history. Multichill (talk) 09:00, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Autoritair

Hi Multichill! @ User talk:Bert56 you wrote "Image:Overheidspamflet 23021981.jpg is uncategorized since 26 April 2009." However, no copyright – apart from my own – is appliccable, at 15:06 +0200 26-04-2009 I sent an e-mail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org about that. Could you please tell me how to proceed? Hello Multichill,
First of all, thanks a lot for {{Unidentified header}} it is good stuff. I will use it a lot.
Your bot successfully added {{Unidentified header}} to the 'category:Unidentified XX' I created.
But your bot hasn't suppressed the text contained in those categories.
Look at Category:Unidentified Stylommatophora.
All the 'category:Unidentified XX' I created contain the same text (Of course I used copy/paste ;-)).
Could you launch your bot to replace:
- {{Unidentified header|subject=XXXXX|category=XXXXX}}
- ;Unidentified, unclassified, unknown or mis-labelled species.:
- ;Please name after species, re-name and re-categorise, if you are able to identify them.:
by
- {{Unidentified header|subject=XXXXX|category=XXXXX}}
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 13:24, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
- By the way, I tried to add a documentation to {{Unidentified header}} in {{Unidentified header/doc}}.
- But with my poor english and my poor level in literature, I failed to find a proper description of parameters subject and category.
- I think that the difficulty is that their are 2 usages for that template: biology and the rest.
- Cheers Liné1 (talk) 15:36, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Liné1, I will have a look at it. Multichill (talk) 15:40, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'm cleaning up now. Multichill (talk) 14:48, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

gracias.

Talkpage guidelines and Babel
Hi Multichill. How do you get the “Talkpage guidelines” and “Babel” being displayed during editing your talk page? --Leyo 12:00, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
- We changed MediaWiki:Editnotice-3 and now every user can put a page at User talk:Multichill/Editnotice. So in your case that would be User talk:Leyo/Editnotice. Multichill (talk) 12:14, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

- OK, should be fixed. BTW, the script should have shown Eusebius the page User talk:BotMultichillT open for editing, unmodified, with a pink box above the edit box saying that the page was protected and giving him two links: one to edit the page all the same, and a second one to execute only the remaining modifications (namely, adding the DR to the log). Anyway, the script now follows redirects.[4] Unfortunately, it'll take 30 days until everyone has this correction, unless people reload their browser's cache. Lupo 07:36, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for your work. Honestly, I didn't pay attention to the links you mention, maybe they appeared on the page. I guess many other users wouldn't have paid attention either, so it's indeed better if redirections are followed. --Eusebius (talk) 07:50, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Groeten, Wouter (talk) 08:55, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Multichill (talk) 09:31, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Creator templates with images
Thanks for fixing category:Creator templates with images. I asked for that fix few weeks ago using {{Editprotected}} and was just beginning to suspect that that approach for fixing problems with protected templates is not working very well. --Jarekt (talk) 12:21, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Cats per Bot
Hello Multichill, these edits [5] were initated by you. It is not good to dump files that are nicely sorted in a topical category into a town cat. So please don't do that again. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 13:23, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- That's how categorization works. Uncategorized -> some general category -> more specific categories. Feel free to find more specific categories. Multichill (talk) 13:29, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
That is shit. Put the files directly into the more spezific cat and safe others people time. We are taking about 50+ files. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 13:33, 15 May 2009 (UTC) Because of this kind of ignorance somebody else had to recategorize more than 400 files by hand [6] which could have been easyly correctly categorized the first time by a bot if somebody had thought before acting. This behaviour and attitude pisses me massivly off. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 13:55, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- Please be mellow. If you have some images which are categorized in a too general category i can fix it for you. I just need the temp category (Category:Images from the German Federal Archive, location Elektrochemisches Kombinat Bitterfeld), the too general category (Category:Bitterfeld-Wolfen) and the new category (Category:Elektrochemisches Kombinat Bitterfeld). IP vandalism + BotMultichill
Is there any way you could have your bot skip adding the {{Uncategorized}} template to pages where the last editor was an IP? I run across several instances on a daily basis where an IP has vandalized a page, removing categories, and the bot comes along and adds an uncategorized template to it; this makes it much harder to revert the vandalism, as I can't use rollback to fix it. I have to wait for the history page to load, use popups to revert two revisions back, go back to the history page to find the IP's talk page and then warn them, instead of hitting "rollback" and then having it take me right to the IP's contribs where there's a link to their talk page. It's a much lengthier process when the bot is involved :(
Here is one example: [7]. I love what the bot does and have no complaints about that, it's just cases where IP vandalism is involved where it gets bothersome ;) Cheers! -- Editor at Large • talk 18:56, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- This kind of vandalism should probably be caught by the Abusefilter before my bot comes along. Multichill (talk) 19:44, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- How does the abuse filter work exactly? Is it somehow connected to how the bot functions? It's a new addition since I was around last a couple of years ago so I confess to be a bit behind the times ;) -- Editor at Large • talk 03:54, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Delay
Could you fix it so that BotMultichill leaves a suitable delay between tagging a file as being uncategorised and attempting a bot categorisation, I think about a month will do, preferably two. I ask because I've just gone through a cluster of clumsily categorised files in which the delay was about half a day, and which I'm sure I could have dealt with if I'd come across earlier. All bot categorisation is doing with such a short delay is transfering files from one backlog to another. Thanks, and apologies if I sound ungrateful.KTo288 (talk) 01:59, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Finding suitable categories for files is much easier when you have suggestions. I won't add a delay. Multichill (talk) 11:47, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thats fine when the suggestions are good ones, when they are bad ones files just get lost. Because it has a longer history there is a community of users checking through uncategorised files, I don't know how many people go through the backlog of bot categorised files needing to be checked. The reason for the suggestion of introducing a delay is because of the files now in Category:Hong Kong Adventure Corps. The files now there were all bot categorised, with categories that were tangential at best about half a day after being bot tagged as being uncategorised. Scanning through each days uncategorised files those files together would have formed an obvious cluster which would have led to their effective categorisation earlier. The effect of an almost immediate bot categorisation has the effect of letting everyone believe that a backlog is being cleared, but only, if I may repeat myself, by creating another one.KTo288 (talk) 12:29, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- I thing bot-assisted categorization is great. But you get better results if the wiki where the pictures are used have many (and good) commonscat-templates to direct the bot to the right category. In my view we should have bots maintaining commonscat-links just like they maintain iw-links. But thats an other story. If the bot put on many bad categories you could check if there is a bad commonscat on "the home wiki". As far as I know pictures with a bot categorization is in a category so they will not be forgotten and it should be easy to fine pictures that need a human eye. --MGA73 (talk) 16:26, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not sure, the bot doesn't seem to be just use the commonscat templates, it appears that if a parallel category exists in Commons to those used to categorise the article the file is used in the bot seems to add all those categories to the file, which sometimes leads to files with five or six categories not all of which are appropriate. When I speak of lost files I'm using a figure of speech of course, they are still there in the category of bot categorised images needing review, but how many are actually reviewed. I'm not actually against bot categorisation, I just think that we should have longer before the bot does its business.KTo288 (talk) 18:03, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

- It might be a good idea to add a "user category" to those uncategorised files. Most users submit files for a specific theme or location so having them all in one user category might speed up the categorisation process. --Foroa (talk) 19:24, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- One sort of already exists with BotMultichill's notification of Users on their talk page of uncategorised images. You can sometimes find a streak of images of uncategorised images you are interested in if you folow the trail back to a Users talk page.KTo288 (talk) 20:25, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

- Done, you might want to change the default summary. Multichill (talk) 16:44, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! I stop watching your talk page. --Eusebius (talk) 19:09, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Hi, you tagged this image as missing permission, but don't you think this is {{PD-textlogo}}? Especially knowing it comes from Germany, which has a pretty high threshold of originality. –Tryphon☂ 00:41, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- Might be, not sure. Multichill (talk) 16:41, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
PLEASE!
- in three languages you may read it
- i let someone block my takpage
- still you did not get it?
- what do you need? some colorfull blinking javascript?
- as I'm not an admin on commons i ask you to remove what you bot-like wrote on my talk page.
- thank you very much ...Sicherlich Post
HELLO??? HELLO??
you really need blinking java script to react in any way is it? ...Sicherlich Post 11:41, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hi. Sicherlich, any autoconfirmed account can remove that note. Is there any reason why you would like Multichill to remove it? I'm not sure if you know, but you can indeed remove it yourself. However if this was just to be courteous, okay. — Kanonkas // talk // e-mail // 12:31, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- Kanonkas; check the log [8]; it was not and was only done for short time as Multichill kindly ignores what was written on the page, ignored the protection and ignored my request on his talk page. Excellent behavior. ...Sicherlich Post 22:07, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- Oh I didn't notice the last bit. Thank you for explaining it. — Kanonkas // talk // e-mail // 03:45, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- Protected talk page? That's very strange and unwiki-ish. I want to leave you a note here because {{Please link images}} doesn't work at the German Wikipedia. Multichill (talk) 16:46, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. Why not adding a notice like this instead? If an admin would nominate one of your uploads for deletion, a new section would automatically be created on your talk page anyway. --Leyo 16:57, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- I have that at all my Wikipedia talk pages. I opened a new topic at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Protection of talk page to see how other admins feel about this. Multichill (talk) 17:00, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- oh great; "I have that at all my Wikipedia talk pages." but you ignore it when others have? Exzellent. - The protection was there to help people understand that they can get in touch with me in other ways. But maybe when even an admin on commons who i thought is experienced is not able to handle that it might be useless anyways ...Sicherlich Post 22:19, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Cleaning after BetaCommandBot
File:Grenoble - Fontaine au lion.jpg File talk:Grenoble - Fontaine au lion.jpg Just wondering... Are you going to undelete? Should I do it myself? I'm not sure what is happening and why you needed to delete the file. Apparently the proper file history was on the talk page, I had not seen it. I had the file universally replaced, the original was deleted already, I'm afraid it's going to be delinked from everywhere. --Eusebius (talk) 19:33, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- Please recover all your deleted images. Beta asked me to delete all of todays uploads. Before i did that i checked if any of the source files where deleted already. Looks like you did it right after that. Multichill (talk) 19:41, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- OK. --Eusebius (talk) 20:54, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
About the uncategories images
Thank you for informing me about the uncategorized images. But you told me that Kamalapur_(4),Kamalapur_(2),Kamalapur_(5)these files are uncategorized since 29 December 2008. But i categorized those files that time so i can not understand why i am getting this message.
[[User:Nasir8891|Nasir Khan Saikat]] (talk) 08:04, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- I guess you didn't read my faq. You added the categories in January. Multichill (talk) 16:28, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi Multichill I notice you have a category called 'Boxers of the New Zealand'. The correct way of saying this is Boxers of New Zealand, leaving out 'the' Can you please change it to the correct way of pronouncing it. Thanks ~
