farm animals (cows & goats)

[edit]

Hello there, just wished to drop a thank you note. I was thrilled to find your contribution cows_at_Dairy_Lane, and as I sent the link to my niece, who is also appreciating the live image.

She was at a country animal farm toward the year end, and she wished to let me know which farm animal she has become a great fan of. She now owes me a cupcake as I won the picture search. And maybe two for you (; Great new year to you! Omotecho (talk) 13:10, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You are most welcome, Omotecho! Thanks for sharing the story, too. Michael Barera (talk) 06:01, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Letter Carriers' Monument

[edit]

Could you do a photo of the statue itself, suitable for adding to the article on the topic? All existing photos are just too shady; looks comfortable, but doesn't highlight the work as art. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:07, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion, Orangemike! However, as the statue was constructed in 1989, it must still be under copyright and I wouldn't be able to upload a photo of it to Commons. I think I could probably upload a photo under fair use to English Wikipedia and still use it in the article, but I haven't done any fair-use photography for Wikipedia (separate from Commons) before. Please let me know if my logic is faulty in any way. Michael Barera (talk) 06:24, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Milwaukee Public Museum

[edit]

Thank you for your work in documenting this amazing place! I just got done visiting it myself, and with the sad knowledge that its days are numbered, I spent five full days in there attempting to photograph every panel of every exhibit. I'm planning to create a public archive similar to what you've done here on wikimedia, but am still trying to determine the best platform to do so (considering flickr.com).

However, I unfortunately arrived to the museum too late to see a few of its most iconic exhibits. The model of a South American Jivaro/Shuar man accompanied by tsantsas (shrunken heads) has now been removed from public view, as has the Peruvian mummy diorama on the third floor mezzanine. Additionally, the "Cradle of Mankind" panel in the Hall of East Africa has also been covered up. Apparently, the display of anything having to do with human remains is now strictly forbidden, including even the fossilized skulls of early hominids(although I guess Egyptian mummies are still okay).

Anyway, I'm writing to ask if you happen to have any photos of those aforementioned exhibits or their accompanying captions? And if so, would you be willing to kindly share them? When I post up my own gallery of photos I will certainly credit you for any contributions! Thanks again for your work. 白柯倫 (talk) 19:37, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You are most welcome, 白柯倫! I moved to Milwaukee in 2022, so all my photos are just from the last couple of years. I finished photographing all galleries in the museum as they currently exist (most notably "Rainforest") last fall, and I still need to process and upload those photos (hopefully in the next month or two). I don't have any photos of text panels, though, just dioramas and exhibits/galleries more broadly. Also, I know that MPM has been photographing galleries (including text panels) as part of their 360 Virtual Exhibit Tours. I hope that this helps. All the best! Michael Barera (talk) 06:09, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looking forward to seeing the rest of your photos, and uploading my own as well. That rainforest exhibit has a lot! As you pointed out, that one and a few others have been made available for "virtual touring" by the museum itself.
However, I do not get the sense that they are as keen to preserve the beautiful old-school dioramas, and exhibits depicting extinct cultural practices which are now considered "dated"(which in my opinion, is all the more reason to preserve them in a museum!). But judging from youtube videos I've seen, I get the impression the the exhibits I mentioned (Jivaro shrunken heads, Peruvian mummies, "Africa/cradle of mankind") seem to have remained intact until quite recently, well into 2023. Perhaps I'm mistaken, as I didn't find any of those images in your gallery. 白柯倫 (talk) 00:51, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, I didn't see any of those. My first visit was in October 2022, and the only human remains I saw were the two Egyptian mummies in the Crossroads of Civilization exhibit on the third floor. Michael Barera (talk) 05:26, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, well thanks for the info. I do have just one more question about the museum for you, if you don't mind. In the mock European village, did you happen to see any Portuguese representation? Cause they have Portugal listed as one of their 33 ethnicities, but if there's a Portuguese house somewhere in there I sure didn't see it! 白柯倫 (talk) 06:46, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't remember seeing one, and I didn't take a photo of one, either. I'm pretty sure there isn't one, but I'm not 100% positive. Michael Barera (talk) 06:57, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reverts

[edit]

I hope you are well. I noticed you reverted me on all of the images that are related to the Warner Grand Theater (Milwaukee) - I started an article with that title and wrote an article. I was hoping to have the images turn up in the commons link on the Warner Grand Theater (Milwaukee) article. You have them with the category: "Warner Grand Theater" and en.wiki has an article with that title on Wikipedia but it is in California. Lightburst (talk) 00:59, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

OK, sorry...I see what you were trying to do, Lightburst. Let me fix it... Michael Barera (talk) 03:18, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I think I fixed it now...what do you think, Lightburst? Michael Barera (talk) 03:27, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think that works. It would be great to meet you. Lightburst (talk) 04:20, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Hoop houses has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Story of the Volney L. Moore house in Waukesha

I have the autobiography of May Burlingame, a granddaughter of Henry Snyder, who owned the Volney L. Moore house in Waukesha until his death in 1909. She included beautiful descriptions of the house.
