Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. Your picture has been moved, the older version is now overwritten. Please note that is is not possible strictly speaking to move pictures: I just re-uploaded your picture under a new name and deleted the older one. The usual procedure is to perform the new upload yourself and then tag the older one with Bad name. An admin then deletes the older one. Let me know if you have any question. Image Tagging Image:Senecio_battiscombei.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Senecio_battiscombei.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Categorization of identified images
[edit]Hi Mehmet Karata; I notice that you've added categories to a number of bird images.[1] Image:Sialia mexicana 07099.JPG already appears on Sialia_mexicana, so it doesn't need to be categorized according to the guidance of COM:TOL, to wit, "Images that are known with certainty to represent a particular species should appear in the species article, and not be categorized in any of the taxa categories. Images not so well-identified should be put directly in the most precise category to which they can be reliably assigned. Since users of the images in the Wikipedias, Wikibooks, etc, are likely to take the assignments as authoritative, care is advised; it is better to leave an image at the family level than to guess at a genus or species." Periodically, this issue gets revisited and people have even gotten so upset over it that they have quit contributing. You can see the long history at Commons talk:WikiProject Tree of Life. However, that wording has been retained, largely in deference to the wishes of those who look through the categories trying to identify organisms that have not be identified as to species. Red-billed Hornbill picture
[edit]Hi. Can you tell me where Image:Red-billed_hornbill.jpg was taken? Kenya? JerryFriedman 06:27, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- It was taken on the shore of Lake Baringo in Kenya. Hope this helps. Mehmet Karatay 11:30, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks! It's now going in en:List of birds of Kenya.
Removing Categories
[edit]Hi Mehmet (...or Gemma?) I've noticed that you have removed most of the Categories from my recent uploads, I'm not upset by this as I'm sure there are sound reasons for deleting them but apart from a discussion which claims that there are too many I haven't come across the reasoning behind this, would you be able to point me at some guidelines please? Aviceda 05:24, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hello Aviceda,
- Thanks for your comment. This link might help you. The reason we removed the categories from your pictures was that the species categories that you had put them in originally did not exist so were red links. That means no-one would have been able to find your pictures. An alternative solution would have been to create the species categories and remove the genus categories instead. To put them in both would be over-categorisation. If you would prefer, we can go through the pictures again, create the species categories, and put them there? It does sound very complicated, but I hope that makes some sense. Mehmet Karatay 19:58, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- P.S. They are really good pictures. Where did you take them?
- Hi Mehmet, thanks for clarifying this, Should I have used the common name as the category rather than the scientific? (as there would be an article already created)
- All of my African pics were taken in Uganda Dec 2005 - Jan 2006, would definitely recommend it as a nature photographers dream! Aviceda 02:12, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- The scientific name is the better one to use. We've put all your bird pictures into species categories which have now been created. To create a category edit the category's page (by clicking on the red link) and put it into the appropriate existing category using . Hope this helps. Identification plant
[edit]This Image:Flowers on austrian hut ridge.jpg is Senecio keniophytum. Bye --Abalg 01:41, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
- Gemma and I suspected that it may be Senecio keniophytum, but we weren't sure so we left is as unknown. Thank you. Mehmet Karatay 10:11, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
- Your cropped version is now used on the stub en:Senecio keniophytum. Mehmet Karatay 10:37, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Link to species ?
[edit]Hi, I have the following suggestion : add a link to the species in the images you are uploading : see for instance the change I have made to Image:Blue winged teal clipped.jpg.
Yours, Frédéric 17:45, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion. It's a great idea. We'll go through the photos we've just uploaded and add them. Mehmet Karatay 17:52, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Trench foot/Immersion foot diagnosis
[edit]Image:Trench foot.jpg
This just lookslike severe pruning.
How are you sure that this is an actual case of trench foot? I cannot see any cold-induced damage.
- red or blue colour
- blisters and open sores
- infection
While it is good to have pictures on articles, they should accurately represent what they claim. --221.133.201.194 23:06, 22 October 2008 (UTC) ZayZayEM
- Thank you for pointing this out, I've removed the photo from the article. I should probably change the name of the photo as well. Do you have any suggestions what I should call it? I'm happy to do the change myself but feel free to rename it yourself if you want to. Mehmet Karatay (talk) 08:02, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:04, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Biosphere Reserves
[edit]Hello, I find this very interesting map : File:Biosphere Reserves.svg. But, by the color code used (most is red, most there are biospheres reserves per country), you indicate most there are biospheres reserves per country, less is good. Because, the color red holds itself of moral values. I imagine that your desire is to say the opposite: most there are biospheres reserves, the better it is. That is why I advise you to reverse the order of colors. Best regards --Abalg (talk) 17:53, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you for the comment. We may get around to it when we have time. Feel free to make the change yourself. It is easy to do using en:Inkscape; Inkscape is very intuitive. The colours I chose were based on the raster image I was vectorising, File:Biosphere_Reserves.png. Mehmet Karatay (talk) 13:25, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

passing on a message
[edit]hello Mehmet Karatay, i am writing to you in order to pass on a message from Mr Paul Docherty who works in publishing and wishes to use one of your images.
"Dear Mehmet
I’m writing to ask if you would grant permission for your lovely photo of feet that have trench foot to be used in a book about wilderness medicine? I don’t think the ShareAlike license or the GNU license can be applied in print, which is why I’d like you to send me written permission, although you could perhaps advise me on the normal procedure for using Wikipedia/Wikimedia images that have these licenses – the licenses state that the license must be reproduced in the book, but that is just not possible, they are too long. So far I’ve always written to people to ask their permission, but perhaps this is not necessary?
Best wishes
Paul Docherty" --80.44.145.71 11:02, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Biosphere Reserve map
[edit]Hi! Nice job on the biosphere reserve network map. The color scheme is much better than the one I previously made. Thanks for uploading an improved version. I'll just propose that the old and outdated version be deleted to avoid confusion. Thanks. Joey80 (talk) 02:31, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
- I'm glad you like the work. I can't take full credit for the current colour scheme, I'm afraid, as that was improved by User:Abalg. Thanks. Mehmet Karatay (talk) 09:06, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Please give images good descriptions
[edit]
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing!
High Contrast (talk) 10:01, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
- Hi High Contrast. Thanks for the feedback; I'll see what I can do in future. I attempt to give good descriptions on images that I've created but for ones I've uploaded from elsewhere it is more difficult. That image was part of a bulk migration of images from Flickr. The image is not mine so anything that I can say about it would mostly be a guess.
- While trying to write a description, I realised that the images is already on Commons elsewhere so I've tagged it for speedy delete. Thanks, Mehmet Karatay (talk) 10:32, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Red-billed Hornbill
[edit]Could you perhaps supply the locality for this photo? The species is variable over its range and the races are sometimes deemed full species. I would like to add the race detail, once I know the locality. JMK (talk) 11:17, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- Done. I hope it's useful. Mehmet Karatay (talk) 11:32, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- Much appreciated. JMK (talk) 12:03, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
