Descriptions in Artwork template

Hello, Magnus Manske. Some files you uploaded had syntax errors in the {{Artwork}} template. The problem was that a pipe character (|) was included in the description. As I'm sure you know, the pipe is used to separate parameters. The part of the description that was after the pipe wasn't a valid parameter, so the file appeared in Category:Pages using Artwork template with incorrect parameter.

I've fixed quite a few of these. An example of the fix I used can be seen here, but there may be other ways to take care of it. Please check for this when you use pipe characters in descriptions. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:47, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, I did not realize that pipes are used in some of the descriptions. I have now changed the upload bot to escape them properly. --Magnus Manske (talk) 08:38, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
Thanks! -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:56, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
Hi again. It looks like this is still an issue. An example is this file, which has pipe characters in the title this time. Can you make the same fix for the title text? -- Auntof6 (talk) 11:13, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Emil Fenzl - 28a71c7ec2.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Emil Fenzl - 28a71c7ec2.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Pipe characters in recent uploads breaking Template:Artwork

Hi and thanks for the recent uploads! Could you maybe adjust the responsible code to escape pipe characters in |title= because those have broken Template:Artwork and the concerned cases have started to show up in Category:Pages using Artwork template with incorrect parameter. Thanks in advance, --Marsupium (talk) 18:59, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

I am now removing pipe characters from descriptions etc., that should fix it. --Magnus Manske (talk) 08:59, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

Please use meaningful filenames

I know you're a programmer so I kind of understand your thinking, but on the Commons we do use filenames that mean something. "d7ae996dd" is not the title or description of a painting in any language. And please don't use invaluable but the original auction sites (as long as the images are still up there in good resolution). Thanks! --Anvilaquarius (talk) 19:05, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

I always tried to put the title in there, but due to a bug I didn't realize until now, the ID fallback was used. I have fixed this now, most artwork fould have better filenames (example). As for invaluable, I thought most images there have decent resolution for an auction site; besides, I don't know how to find the "original site" eg here, and even if I could, I would have to write scraper code for many more. On the other hand, if you know of a good site with artworks that we have a property for, please let me know, happy to add it to the scraper if it's feasible (ie not some Java magic state horror). --Magnus Manske (talk) 09:03, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Pieter Puype - Zeeuwse wandelstok.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
