Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Please link images
[edit]
Hello LindaLisa!
Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. EugeneZelenko 16:43, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Assistance
[edit]You wrote If SOMEONE can PLEASE let me know what I am doing wrong with my categories and links?! I added many hidden and visible categories and nothing seemed to happen. Also, please let me know how to get out of what looks like a bad place to be-with "Orphans" in my Gallery pathname! I'd appreciate it! I wrote to Admin support over the weekend but didn't hear back... I'd like to be sure I'm set up properly! THANK YOU!!!! - did that referr to the template Please link images that has been added above? The template was probably added before you had categorized your uploads.
Anyway, as far as I can tell you're not doing anything wrong with categories and links, apart from having added both Category:L.A. Guns and Category:Rock bands - the last is redundant since LA guns is already a subcategory of Rock Bands. I don't think I understood the question re "orphans" - an orphan at commons is a media file with no category or link, you don't have any of those.
I'm adding this page to my watch list now, so if you have any questions you my write them here (or at my talk). Happy editing, Finn Rindahl 09:54, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, you don't need add hidden categories like Category:User-created GFDL images and Category:Self-published work. --GeorgHH • talk 10:28, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Thank you all very much for your feedback!
I feel a bit better about it now! There's still a lot to learn!
Thank you again!
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:18, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Bonjour, Vigneron! Merci Beaucoup!
Est-ce que links sont categories?
