Jazminmillion
Hi! You posted a welcome message on a gallery page Jazminmillion. You probably wanted to post it on a user's page? I'd move the page to the correct target but there's no user named Jazminmillion. Could you enlighten me to which user you meant to send the message? Regards, Jafeluv (talk) 11:48, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- (Copied the following from User talk:Jafeluv)
- Oh, God, what a mess! Can you move it by creating a page for a new user, if possible? And either way, by all means, delete that whole thing. I read how to request a "speedy deletion", but don't even know where one is supposed to type the request! The talk page? The edit summary? Somewhere on the page itself that you see, and if so where? Do you see how limited here I am about information? I made a Welcome Banner for User:JazminMillion in the English Wikipedia, and hoped I was doing the same here. He's a newcomer to Wikipedia and Commons who is an outstanding photographer. Please, help! I have NEVER understood how Wikimedia Commons worked. Appeals for help for a couple of years here never helped-- except for two well-meaning people here who have given me some info, but they assume I know far more than I do about the use of computers, and so some instructions just went over my head! I grew up without computers- I was poor and I'm older than the computer generation. In the en.Wikipedia someone explained how to upload photos here-- (sad that I had to ask THERE, instead of here)! I've been editing since 2007 with this user name, and if you take a look you'll most of my photo uploads listed on that userpage there: [1]. I hoped to find someone here who might give him the information needed and sort of mentor him. Could/would you consider it? I still don't even know how to create Categories here despite all my uploads, and I'd thought to ask User:Herbythyme who did help me somewhat. I was going to ask him to look after Jazmin, but I already dumped the last new person interested in working with us in his lap. Can you help at the least in deleting that error page of mine?--Leahtwosaints (talk) 14:31, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

- Ah, now I see. It didn't occur to me to check whether there was such a user elsewhere. He has some nice photographs on Flickr, maybe he'll decide to join Commons someday too. You can request deletion by putting the template Speedy at the top of the page itself. (I've already done that for you, though.) I don't know how good a mentor I'd be, but if JM or yourself ever has questions about something on Commons, you can always ask me :) Jafeluv (talk) 15:55, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Greetings. I've deleted the problem page. I'm very sorry you've had trouble getting help here on Commons. We try hard to be friendlier than the WPs and that has certainly been my experience. User:Herbythyme is a great resource, but many others will also help if asked -- including me. You can also post a note on Commons:Village Pump which will almost always get a rapid response. If it's a serious matter you can use the Commons:Administrators' noticeboard.
- I should add that as a general rule, you should not create accounts for others. We have policies about multiple accounts and, while the mere creation is probably not a violation, use of a second account can be.
- Categories -- Commons:Categories covers the subject pretty well, although not in simple English.
- To add a file to an existing category "XYZ", just add to the bottom.
- To create a new category, first look around in the logical category tree to make sure that an appropriate category doesn't exist under a different name. Then just type the new category into the search box as Category:XYZ, or whatever, remembering to include the word "Category" and following our rules on capitalization (only the first word is capitalized except for proper names). Then promptly add a file to the new category -- empty categories will be often deleted.

Hi, I nominated the above image for deletion. Do you know anything to suggest that Masao Nakagami did not flickr wash the image? I googled the name, but I can't tell whether the various credits on different websites derived from his Flickr uploads or not. Nymf (talk) 23:25, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry. While I've been very active on en.Wikipedia for over 3 1/2 years, I was never able to get any real assistance in learning much about Wikipedia Commons. I edit biographies of musicians, thus, all of my uploads- over 600 here have been of musicians (with a handful of architecture), and all but about a dozen have been placed in the Wikipedias. I have NO IDEA what "Flickr Washing" is. Every one of my uploads are the result of finding great photos and personally emailing and asking the poster if they are the photographer, and if so, explaining the two Creative Commons we accept, and asking if they have any interest in allowing us to display the photo. If all is well, I am usually the uploader, though I have introduced some of the photographers to Commons and they are now editors here. In some cases, the photographers, including Masao Nakagami have done professional work for magazines or for musicians themselves, but I've always made certain that even publicity-style photos were never published or used anywhere, and that the photoographer has full ownership of them to the best of my ability.-- usually in long emails. Ive uploaded photos he's taken before and never had an isuues with his work until now.--Leahtwosaints (talk) 10:13, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
- Flickr washing means that someone who is not the copyright holder uploads it to Flickr under a free license. You seem careful enough, though, so if you have corresponded with Masao Nakagami, I will take your word for it and rely on your judgment. It is very unusual to find promotional images that haven't been Flickr washed, hence my initial skepticism. We have talked before, by the way (in regard to the Terry Reid article. Great image.) Nymf (talk) 15:38, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'm not a fan of Moby, but thought the photo was interesting- though someone with photograph skills might want to to trim or balance it somehow? I'm not an artist and only an amateur photographer. Nakagami changed three of his phoography sets sets (one of of his "leftovers" from photoshoots all available under the BY-SA license on Flickr, by thw way. Mainly punk rock related taken in Japan and I think I uploaded the majority of those of musicians by now, if you are interested in looking through those photostreams. His English is limited. Most of the photos I didn't upload and place were of members of bands which do have articles in the en.Wikipedia (and still need photos), but I'm not 100% sure some of the identities of some bandmates, in the band "Television", for example. If you or another editor can identify the members by their instruments, or previous knowledge of any of them, it would really be helpful; the individual members' biography articles all are without photos. OH, it's eerie that you mentioned that photo of Terry Reid! The same photographer, Dina Regine, emailed me yesterday, saying she bumped into Reid (she's both a photographer and a session musician) herself. She included two photos taken this past week of Reid. One was a good shot of him playing an upright bass. I'd like to add it to his article with her permission, etc., but his article has only two references and a POV tag hanging over it. It wouldn't take much to add another more recent photo of good quality, but I'm reluctant to do so if I'm going to ask someone to give up yet another photo if it is doesn't illuminate the text in the article. You interested? Please, if so, you can best contact me at my Wikipedia talk page. Thanks for believing in me. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 23:55, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

Renaming photo
I am not an admin. If possible, I would go ahead and upload the photo to the Commons with a new name. Then use it in a Wikipedia article right away, so that it does not get deleted as a duplicate. Then contact an admin on the Commons, and ask them to delete the badly-named photo. Commons:Administrators' noticeboard.
Or you could go there first, and ask them to change the name. That might take a long time though. I don't know what kind of backlog they have. If you know an admin, then contacting them directly on their talk page might be the fastest way to get things done. --Timeshifter (talk) 12:05, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
Watermarks
Sorry - no something I have time to work on at present. Regards --Herby talk thyme 09:21, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know how to do that. I use the freeware image editor called IrfanView. I can crop out the text, but I don't know how to fill in the spot with the same background color. Maybe ask at the Commons:Graphic Lab. They are skilled, and are very helpful. More specifically: Commons:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop. See also: en:Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop. --Timeshifter (talk) 06:49, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Move done. Watermark removed.
I suggest that when you upload a file with a (C) watermark, you add a little explanation -- saves others from having to go to the Flickr page to check on its status. That's true even though the bot has already noted that it was Stauffer's Flickr page. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 23:05, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
Need your help
Hi, I'm trying to add proper Categories (and thank you for your help)! When I can find the time from editing and soliciting photographers (to use their photos on Wikipedia) removing their copyright for a Creative Commons license. I still have trouble viewing which Category is highest on the "tree". So, please help me- suppose I upload photos where there isn't a specific category. Example: right now, I'm uploading photos for another editor working on an article about the 1960s-70s band, The Byrds. How far must I go to the broadest Category? Just Cat:Music, or would it be correct for me to assume that the broadest Category for them would be ? And then, create a , followed by ones for the individuals in that band, like , , (David Crosby's already exists) and on and on to list each member of the band? I'm just trying to be clear; I'm slow learning.
Question 2, then. If my first guess above is correct, do we continue to find additional categories for the genre of music the band plays? (like [[Category:Rock bands from the United States? I've wondered if it just creates more junk and clutter, or if it helps to categorize things in several ways.
Which is my Question 3- For members of bands like David Crosby, should we still be placing or other categories for them, if they already have one as a person?
Sorry to keep bothering you! In looking back at my first botched uploades, I've found duplicates that need deletion. Other than the first case (following this), where both versions have been used, the others not are the same but have never been used, and have no article at all. I think this deserves deletion of both photos, as well as all the other duplicates following it of other people: One is here: 1 [2] No use of this, AND as the primary uploader of pics for the band, Counting Crows, which has enough, I'd delete both of them! Anyway, one really must go. The same here- neither of these two are used: [3] or [4] and last but not least: [5], or [6] My early mistakes in uploading photos is embarrasing. I appreciate all the help in deleting those and answering my questions! Thanks! User:Leahtwosaints
- Please do not delete images unless they are exact duplicates. Many people worldwide use the images besides Wikipedia. The Commons is an image archive for many websites.
- For exact duplicates you can just put a Duplicate template at the top of the image page.
- I fixed a nowiki tag that was messing up everything. So we can use this talk page fine now.
- As to all the categorization questions I try to put a few logical categories on images I upload, and then let others worry about the rest. There is always more categorization work that can be done on the Commons. I only work on what interests me at the moment. The most important thing is that the images get uploaded. The search tool here on the Commons helps people find stuff that isn't perfectly categorized.
- It is more important to use descriptive filenames. Then search tools can find the images no matter how they are categorized.
- I have Google Toolbar installed on my browser. I find it to be very helpful in finding categories. Along with the Commons search form. Also, some of the categories on the English Wikipedia page for a musician or musical group will match up with the category names on the Commons. Try them and see if they work without being red-links. --Timeshifter (talk) 02:21, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Duplicate?
Back on June 7th, you tagged File:Scott-Gorham 2008.jpg as a duplicate.[7] However, you didn't specify what it was a duplicate of. To help clear out Category:Duplicate, I've gone ahead and removed the template, but I'm giving you a heads up about it in case you know what the duplicate image was. Ho I would like to use your Bob Marley photo (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bob-Marley.jpg) in a video I am making for a Manchester UK band called Sonic Boom Six. Please could you confirm what attribution I should use int he end credits? Thanks, Pete
- I've been hospitalized for over 6 months, and just got the chance to respond. Look on the photo uplift page for such information. Here: https://secure.flickr.com/photos/dubpics/5619960763/
Looking at the info, you see you should credit Eddie Mallin for his upload to Flickr on the page I listed above. It is a photo licensed under a generic Creative Commons license. If he did not take the pic, then, there will be a way to contact him through Flickr there to find out who took the photo. bEST wISHES, --Leahtwosaints (talk) 02:01, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Re: Use of George Harrison photo at Wembley Stadium
Hi there
I am writing to you about the use of a George Harrison photo taken by Steven Mathieson taken at Wembley Stadium from Wikimedia. I would like to use this photo in a forthcoming iBook to be used on the iPad. I would like to use the photo in a comprehension question about a famous person namely, George Harrison. The iBook is an English as a Second Language reader.
Please find below the attribution that I intend to use in my iBook:
George Harrison colour photo courtesy of Mr. Steve Mathieson. Photo taken at Wembley Stadium, London on April 23, 2009. http://www.flickr.com/photos/384959@N07/3641636343
Will this suffice? Please advise.
I appreciate your time with my request.

Image:Sonny Rollins at Newport 2008.jpg
Hi! Thanks for your kind comments on my Sonny Rollins photo. I have a spotty history of contributions to Wikipedia, but as I love taking photos of musicians and singers in concert I do occasionally upload one. The Rollins shot happened when I succeeded in talking my way past a security person to get close to the stage. Made me really happy as he has been one of my favorite musicians since the 1960s. I've also uploaded shots of Brett Dennen and recently Melody Gardot. Of my many Picasa albums at http://picasaweb.google.com/ProvidenceJim I have several of concerts, at Newport and other venues. If you happen to take a look and see something of interest, please let me know. --RI-jim
