Image deletion warning | Image:Flag of Western Sahara.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Potentially undesirable edits
[edit]Take a look When editing out images from infoboxes (e.g. here), the Commons Delinker leaves caption information that appears in the infobox implying that there is an image. You may want to resolve this. If you would like to respond to me, please do so on my talk on the English Wikipedia. Koavf (talk) 01:17, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think the best solution is to change the template, so it can handle an empty image parameter. Cheers! Siebrand 11:52, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think the template is already handling the problem by showing parts of the tag that would not display if the image were present. The purpose is to highlight to the editor, Zariane, that the edit was not complete: s/he has left behind some information which suggests an image should be here. Editors are supposed to take a glance at the results of their edits. The problem in this case is human error, and the software is doing its best to point it out. --99.226.159.95 02:13, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Re: Template:Lang-mp
[edit]Yes, we no longer track protected templates through that template since there was recently a huge increase in template namespace protection. As an alternative we use the more informative {{Permprot}} on talk pages to inform users on how to make {{Editprotected}} requests. And since many of the templates which contain the now (somewhat) deprecated template are heavily used, removing them has been a gradual process. Rocket000 (talk) 09:18, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Please do not overwrite images
[edit]
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. I notice that you have uploaded a new image and at the same time replaced an older one. I think you should know that this is only allowed when the two images are almost exactly alike. Here in Commons we would like to host as many different, useful versions as possible for Wikimedia projects to choose from. I have restored your image to an older version, but I hope you will upload your fine image with another name. Thank you, and happy editing! Cecil (talk) 23:31, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, had not seen your post on my page. You have changed several images in a way not intended by the original author without a consens, even going so far as creating duplicates, since for one of them your version was already on Commons under a different name. You also removed text of an official picture made by the CIA. If you don't like their descriptions tell them, but don't just counterfeit it (people would think it was made that way by CIA while in fact in wasn't) and then upload the file in a really bad quality too. -- Cecil (talk) 00:12, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
Pictures like File:Octahedron.png are fine as they are. They are raytraced renderings of a 3D model and as such very difficult—if not impossible—to faithfully represent as SVG. It may be possible, sure, but takes a huge amount of work and isn't really necessary, especially considering that the source image is of fairly high resolution already. Note, however, that images such as File:Tetrahedral-octahedral honeycomb2.png are fine to tag with {{SVG}} since they are easily representable in their entirety as a vector graphic and are likely to benefit from such a representation (the latter isn't really the case for realistic renders of 3D objects). —Johannes Rössel (talk) 08:33, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Saint John Will-I-Am Coltrane.jpg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.
The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that this file was not a derivative work of a non-free work, you may request undeletion.

It is really not constructive or productive to overwrite one of these images with another, so that there are only three different maps... AnonMoos (talk) 02:18, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- Whatever -- a decision has been arrived at more or less by consensus that the simplest name "File:Flag-map of Western Sahara.svg" should not endorse the claims of one side or the other, and you trying to change this situation is distinctly unconstructive and unproductive, and pointing to the "original version" changes absolutely nothing. AnonMoos (talk) 02:34, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, you are greatly mistaken -- the UN map has been in place since "06:10, 5 May 2011". I really don't understand why you have taken it upon yourself to create controversy and stir up trouble where there was none recently... AnonMoos (talk) 02:44, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Foo Fighters with John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, 2008.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Moving files
[edit]Hi Justin Anthony, you are a file mover and recently moved some files.
While on Wikipedia this is not such an issue, at Wikimedia Commons, you have to be very careful. This includes updating the redirects pointing to the file and to replace all its usage globally. Otherwise there is a chance that other articles look damaged/broken (also because MediaWiki, the server software currently has issues with new created file redirects).
I herby ask you to please take care of these tasks in future. You can do this manually using Special:GlobalUsage and Special:WhatLinksHere or you use the service of User:CommonsDelinker/commands (just add the commands to its talk page) or, much easier, you use Move & Replace which will care about all the tasks while moving but requires JavaScript enabled in your browser.
For example Special:GlobalUsage/IMG22586-寶楊路站-3號線月台.JPG and Special:GlobalUsage/IMG12563-上海體育館站-4號線大堂.jpg was not replaced and the files did not display at Chinese Wikipedia.
I am going to update the usage for the files you moved recently (have a script that compiles the list of your moves for me) but in future please take care of this issue.
Have some nice and peaceful Christmas days.
Kind regards -- Rillke(q?) 12:18, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks I didn't think about usage outside of Commons... What about other wikis that use Commons files? There's an extension for that on MediaWiki--would I have to go off-site to fix those problems? Thanks again. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:01, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- We usually care for all Wikimedia wikis but we don't see usage outside the cluster, thus don't update other wikis. This is BTW why file redirects created during moving should work (but currently they don't) and they of course must be updated while moving (Move & Replace also takes care of this task). -- Rillke(q?) 19:10, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Videos with borders
[edit]Hi, please undo your removal of the category "images with borders" I have added to videos with borders. There is no alternate category, and the videos are usually cropped when they are in this one. FunkMonk (talk) 15:35, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

No Neutral WP:RS call the Moroccan Wall a Separation barrier
[edit]After I removed Category:Separation barriers from Category:Moroccan Wall as being a "WP:OR/POV neologism category" you reverted it writing (Rv. If you think the category should be deleted, nomimate it)
I wasn't clear that it was WP:OR/Neogologis for that wall. It obviously applies to barriers/walls/etc. in Israel where hundreds of WP:RS use the phrase, but in working on the relevant Wikipedia article I found no sources that do so for the Moroccan wall, or just about anything else, except usually in a pejorative fashion. Therefore that Moroccan Wall does not belong in Category:Separation barriers. Carolmooredc (talk) 04:57, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- Neutrality Pejoratives are not inherently incorrect or inaccurate: many (most?) references to the Israeli separation fence/barrier/wall with the West Bank is frequently referred to in pejorative terms. The problem is whether or not it is accurate to call the Moroccan berm a "separation barrier". I'm curious as to why you think it's not, as it serves as the dividing line between occupied Western Sahara and the SADR-controlled Free Zone. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 05:00, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, did some research and I see aside from obvious nonsense (categorizing a frog as a horse for example), Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2012/12#No_Original_Research original research is not applied quite the same way. So people will have to go to the article to find out that no neutral WP:RS calls the Moroccan Wall a separation barrier. Carolmooredc (talk) 15:11, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- Research Three clicks on Google Scholar showed me this. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 15:20, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- Israeli advocacy organizations trying to apply "separation barrier" to every wall or fence every built to condone their own controversial use of such a wall would not be considered reliable in most article and/or the POV would have to be identified as not to mislead readers. Carolmooredc (talk) 15:29, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- Sources' I'm confused: are you saying that this source is not reliable when it comes to claims about Western Sahara? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 15:30, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- In a wikipedia article it would have to be identified so that its biases would be obvious. Wiki commons has a much lower standard. Carolmooredc (talk) 16:52, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- Standards If that's the case, then doesn't that make it easier to rely on it for categorization? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 16:53, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- That's the point I was making in second posting; after investigating further I saw that Commons is not that restrictive with references and about "original research" and doesn't even require refs except in unusual cases or, it seems, for drawing maps, graphs, etc. from sources that are copyrighted. Avoiding such copyright restrictions being one of the main reasons. Common sense seems to rule. Carolmooredc (talk) 17:24, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Carol is not here to build an encyclopedia. She is a fringe politician who ran for the Libertarian Party on an anti-Semitic platform. See http://carolmoorereport.blogspot.com/2012/11/israelis-bombing-to-support-stolen-land.html for anti-Semitic blogs clearly demonstrating Carol is only here to promote a Pallywood agenda. Here are some racist quotes of her:
“ | I then traveled over to “Wiki, Women and Museums” which to my dismay featured discussions of Israeli museums. I have a feeling most Israeli museums distort history to justify Israel’s land grabbing expansionist policies, human rights abuses, aggressive Israel lobbies in a number of countries, etc. I always say that Palestinians are the only people who are lied about more than women. Don’t get me started. I was on my best behavior and only wore a low key “fashion kefiyah” around my waist. | ” |
“ | Why is AnonIp 68.6.227.26 adding barely relevant material about women (pregnant or not) disguising themselves as suicide bombers, except to once again blame Palestinians for all the malnutrition and deaths of their children? This is wikipedia, not the Israeli Defense Forces website. I reverted the first occasion where you inserted material in the middle of of sourced info, in a very POV way that interferred with proper referencing. And then you added similar opinions from an American politician? Not very WP:RS. I wish I had time to clean this article up and properly balance it with indoctrination of Israeli children into historical inaccuracies, hatred and supremacy. When I have time to clean it up I will and then take it to a noticeboard where NPOV editors will surely agree with the way the article is being abused. A properly ref'd and placed mention of the Israeli excuses for these deaths might be permitted but both of these were just offensive. | ” |

For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File:Robert Johnson in a photo booth.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

File:Flag of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.svg
[edit]This flag is the flag of Western Sahara, which is one of the countries that is regonized only by 84 countries, the rest doesn't recognized Western Sahara as a sovereign state and is part of Morocco. Because of this reason, it is a partly-recognized state. 174.113.217.132 19:58, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

OTRS ticket for Pulchrism
[edit]Can you add the OTRS ticket number to File:Pulchrism - Championing Beauty as the Purpose of Art.pdf? The auto-reply when you send an email to OTRS will include the ticket number. You'll need to use the {{OP}} template to add the OTRS status (template needs to be subst'd).
I'm also concerned about the work's overall copyright status. Did the second copyright holder, Carpophage Press, also release it under CC-BY-4.0? Mûĸĸâĸûĸâĸû (blah?) 16:36, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Mukkakukaku: The OTRS ticket is unnecessary as the author has declared it on his site now. The press is a vanity press owned and run by the creator of the work. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:32, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- Fair enough, though we don't transcribe vanity press as a rule on Wikisource. The copyright page of the PDF clearly says © Carpophage Press, which indicates they have a stake in it as well, so the point about the publisher's permission stands. If the publisher also has copyright, the author alone cannot release the work as CC-by-4.0, as far as I know. --Mûĸĸâĸûĸâĸû (blah?) 07:49, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Damaged template
[edit]Hi Koavf, you made the template {{Countries of Europe}} faulty by this your edit which caused that the template didn't detect an display existing corresponding links to the "Czech Republic". If you check the situation before the edit, you can notice that the two links are not identic (one of them links to "Czechia" links, the second one to the "Czech Republic" links) and as you can read in related discussions, the alternative links in the templates is the most effective way how to treat the temporary situation that the general consensus to prefer timeless geographical names of countries to the political names of states is a bit blocked in case of Czechia. --ŠJů (talk) 20:47, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- @ŠJů: Where and why are we using two different English names for the same state? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:57, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
:@ŠJů: Note also that your edit broke the display for "the Czech Republic". —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:58, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Koavf: See Template talk:Countries of Europe#CZ/CZR for temporary transitional disunity and Commons:Categories for discussion/2016/12/Category:History of Czechia for more information. The first name is a geographical name of the country, the second name is the political name of the current state. Generally, for most of countries, the timeless geographical names of countries are prefered to the full political names of specific state forms (kingdoms, republics etc.). The official geographical name of Czechia is problematic because it is not very known among uneducated people, however the political name of the Czech Republic is quite unusable for pre-1969 periods of Czechia. The most problematic categories (especially related to pre-1969 times and items) were renamed to the geographical names already, but the consensus to unify the name is not achievable yet.
- (Btw. could you unify your nickname? It's a bit confusing when you are displayed as "Koavf" in page history lists but your signature is "Justin".). --ŠJů (talk) 21:20, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
A Love Supreme
[edit]Hi, please do not create cross-namespace redirects. Jcb (talk) 16:35, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Jcb: Is there a policy on this? Cross-namespace redirects are very useful for searching and will help with hundreds of incoming links. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 17:11, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
- Commons:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#General_reasons - general reason 2 - Jcb (talk) 19:12, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Jcb: But that's precisely what I'm saying: this isn't an implausible redirect. What is implausible about this? Actual incoming links from Wikipedia go to the main namespace and since there are far less galleries than there are categories, it is both helpful and solves an existing problem. I am asking you about cross-namespace redirects in particular: is there some policy about those? I think it's not at all clear that something being cross-namespace is inherently implausible. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:02, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
- You seem to missread the sentence. I will cut it in peaces for you. Deletion reason G2 is valid for:
- Page is an unused and implausible redirect,
- a redirect that is dependent on deleted or non-existent content.
- Unused talkpage redirects that was created as a result of a page move,
- cross-namespace redirects.
- Links from Wikipedia actually almost always link to categories rather than galleries. Jcb (talk) 20:07, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Jcb: I did in fact, misread it—that was simple on another line in my browser and I saw it as a talk page for a cross-namespace redirect that is deleted. And yes, most Wikipedia links are proper but there are certainly dozens or hundreds (thousands?) which aren't. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:24, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

- No problem, many users missread the often difficult to understand long sentences of our policies. About the bad links from Wikipedia, yes there is in issue there. I also have seen links from Wikipedia to non-existing Commons categories. Maybe somebody could write a tool to detect bad links from Wikipedia to Commons, but that is outside my field of knowledge.
Categories
[edit]Hi, Justin. I saw your question to a user about categorization. I hope you will have a constructive, satisfactory answer. I am sick and tired of trying to communicate with some colleagues -those who never accept their mistakes and do not interact with others- here. If you still have energies in that search of interaction and cooperation, maybe you can also have a look at this categorization, on a category opened for just one file... Cheers and many thanks for all your contributions. --E4024 (talk) 15:07, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
- @E4024: Some of those were redundant categories, so I removed them. I'm a lot more active on other WMF projects but sometimes when I come to Commons, it's bewildering. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 18:40, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
Correction requests
[edit]Hello, Koavf.
There are mistakes in these maps which have not been undone. Would you correct them?
In both File:Christian States.svg and File:State Religions.svg, El Salvador is wrongly included, which needs to be removed because it doesn't have a state religion. Article 26 of the Constitution of El Salvador does not declare the Catholic Church as a state religion: "The juridical personality of the Catholic Church is recognized. The other churches may obtain recognition of their personality in conformity with the law". Source: http://confinder.richmond.edu/admin/docs/ElSalvador1983English.pdf
In File:Map of state religions.svg, Georgia is wrongly included, which needs to be removed because it doesn't have a state religion. Section 1 of Article 9 of the Constitution of Georgia does not declare the Georgian Orthodox Church as a state religion: "The state shall declare complete freedom of belief and religion, as well as shall recognise the special role of the Apostle Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Georgia in the history of Georgia and its independence from the state." Source: http://www.parliament.ge/files/68_1944_951190_CONSTIT_27_12.06.pdf
In File:Paises con mayoría cristiana.svg Nakchivan needs to be painted in pink, because it is an exclave of Azerbaijan, and like Azerbaijan as a whole, Nakchivan doesn't have a Christian majority.

- @Artoxx: No problem--I can do this. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:27, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Can you actually update these four maps, because personally I am "illiterate" when it comes to SVG maps. I have no knowledge how to edit and upload SVG files. Artoxx (talk) 13:55, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Artoxx: I will--I just got busy yesterday. I downloaded them and I'm working on a new computer, so I had to download my standard SVG editor. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 17:05, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

Redlinks
[edit]I saw that you have a number of redlinks on your user page for "categories created", are you ever planning or re-creating them or did you just forget to update the list? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 00:00, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
- Created and deleted. I plan on recreating them but that's a loooong-term task. :/ —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 00:07, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

File:White River dyed green, Indianapolis, 2015.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

[edit]Hi! Sorry for my bad English, i`m Ukrainian. I can`t undestand why did you cancel my edit in this category? Template {{Wikidata Infobox}} puts categories related to the year of birth / death automatically, there is no need to prescribe them manually.

- Perhaps you can explain to me why sometimes this template correctly sets the default name sorting, and sometimes it does not? --Stuchka (talk) 07:12, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
