Dear Wikimedian,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in Round 1 of the 2022 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2022.

Round 2 will end at UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Pay attention to copyright
File:Destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

@Stemoc, good catch! That's disappointing, I really thought I had found a freely licenced image of the event. Oh well, self reverting now. Cheers! Johnson524 (talk) 21:40, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I know lol, have been searching the last 6 hours but most are either satellite shots which are owned by american companies (and not ukrainian govt) thus not free. Always looks for attribution below an image of who owns the copyright, if none are provided, always assume its not free.. Stemoc 22:20, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Stemoc: Thanks for the rule of thumb, I'll keep that in mind. Good luck on your search! Johnson524 (talk) 22:31, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Stemoc: if you have the time, the file has been recreated again under the same license. Could you go about removing this image again from Commons, I'm not so familiar with the process. Thanks! Johnson524 (talk) 16:50, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
yeah cascade protected so will see if i can get an admin to delete it... Stemoc 22:41, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Stemoc: It actually looks like it might be under a free license and is cascade protected now. Thanks for your help again with this, cheers! Johnson524 (talk) 22:46, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
nah armyinform doesn't own the rights to it, owned by Suspilne News, you can see the exact shot 3 seconds in on the video posted here (https://sg.news.yahoo.com/drone-footage-shows-flooding-along-150655801.html).. Stemoc 22:49, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Stemoc: Oof. You should mention this on the file's talk page- at least one other user seems pretty convinced, and the file is in use on multiple Wikipedia's now. Johnson524 (talk) 23:03, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
yep been fixing this nonsense for like the last 3 years, whenever a news breaks, idiots start adding random images they find to the major wikis and admins on those wikis don't do a double check and just use those images straight away on the main pages (news), enwiki the worst lol, since i can't touch enwiki, can you get that image removed from the article on it there before one admin decides to use it on the main page..or just replace it with the free one i added, see the watermark? .. yeah..its only free if they tag it as theirs.. File:Elaine O'Neal signature.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
