First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

I agree that images should have a category. I tried to add them a while back as I filled out the form, but my attempt caused me to lose the information I typed in and did not get the category added. I've just tried to add a category to the bottom of the page, but I can't seem to get it to work. I'm having trouble with the vocabulary in the directions. In the past, I added categories to articles, but adding categories to images seems to be different and far more complex. I would like to add more images of Mars when I find them, but I do not want to make a mess for someone else.71.218.64.24 16:54, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization of Mars images

Hi! Category:Surface features of Mars is getting overpopulated. I tried tonight to move images to more specific categories. I almost succeeded in getting all the files on one page, so that also all subcategories get displayed. It would be helpful if you would also use subcategories. That sounds like a good idea. How would I find the subcategories? I tried looking for them a day or so ago, and could not find them.````
Some are listed at the top of the first page of Category:Surface features of Mars, and there are more on the second page. And of course there are othe categories in the category:Mars-tree (not everything is logically ordered). You may also need to create new categories. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

Adding categories

Before adding descriptive categories to images, such as "Labyrinthi on Mars", check to see if the image is already part of that category through a parent cat. For example, with File:28370noctis.jpg, that image is in the category "Noctis Labyrinthus" which is already part of the Labyrinthi category. There's no need for such double categorisation...it just clutters those higher level categories. Let me know if you have any questions. — Huntster (t @ c) 03:39, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Remember, categories are a means of navigation. If single images are in multiple categories in the same category tree, it makes navigation much more difficult. Always choose the category/categories that are the most detailed and focused for any particular category tree.
