Message from a human being :-)
Hey Jim, I just noticed that you've been bugged by the license info enforcing bots quite a few times now. I know it is quite a pain to copy and fill out the Information template for every upload. Are you using the new upload form (the one with lots of separate little boxes)? --Dschwen (talk) 16:43, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
- And a more skillful New York photographer than myself, besides. Delightful. Yes, when uploading I forget to tag perhaps 10-20% of my photos. Besides stupidity, this also is partly because I upload from two different computers and three different browsers. All bring up the same Commons:Upload menu but when I click to say it's my own picture, then it diverges with three different version of the upload form. The simplest is the one I used today with MSIE 6.0 which unfortunately is the most advanced version of Internet Explorer that this turn of the century WinMe computer can handle. That's the one where I keep forgetting.
- From the same old computer when it's only a couple of pictures I use Opera 9.25 which shows a fancier version of the menu. I don't recall ever forgetting the tag with this version, but this browser doesn't have an upload thermometer and it's a slow connection so I get impatient when it's more than two or three pictures in an afternoon.
- Sometimes I get the chance to upload from modern hardware with high speed connection. That machine's recent version of MSIE also shows me the fanciest upload menu, and I'm pretty sure I didn't miss the tag even once. So, my reliability varies from day to day and not only because my memory sharpens and fades.
- Tomorrow I expect to hit the road to en:Piermont, New York with a bicycling gang and get plenty of photos there and on the way to and back. Saturday, Brooklyn including a shot at en:Erasmus Hall of which my picture this winter of en:Flatbush Avenue only got a glimpse. Next weekend, Bettina Johae will return from de:Berlin and lead an artistic bicycle expedition to en:Staten Island only two weeks after I finished uploading my pix from my own solo trip there and over the Category:Bayonne Bridge. Life is hard in summertime for an old bicycler and newbie shutterbug with the misfortune to live in the most photogenic city in the world. Jim.henderson (talk) 17:21, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Help desk help
I get lazy to type the extra options, thanks for doing that.
The upload form was a pain when I started to use it last year and it got worse. (Sorry that I read the message before this). Help desk upload form options from May, right after it changed for the worse. Since then, I have learned that (at least while using the classic skin) when javascript is disabled, the form is just a blank spot to type on and the information template can be easily pasted from that page or pre-filled out from your own source.
The world of html is different with javascript not enabled and I am surprised at how much I really don't need it. I enable it occassionally -- picasa galleries need it. So do some of the book page servers I look at. Flickr's fancy drop down menus disappeared but navigation is still available and kind of more respectable in some ways.
The little edit buttons disappear from the wiki pages, I was only using one of those anyways. The upload form stops looking to see if the image name is taken before upload, so that can possibly be a problem.
That ends one persons perspective on javascript in the new millenia.... -- carol (talk) 10:42, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks; I don't know much about Java or other browser questions; just use whatever's on the computers I'm using at any moment, which are generally installed by other people. Maybe this month or next I'll take time off from bicycling and other summer activities to install a new antique PC and choose my own options.
- It is javascript which is not java which needs a compiler and some things and can be different depending on whose compiler is used. Javascript is more for the browser window and can be enabled or disabled via Preferences. I have mine on and off often throughout the day, so the short point to that long explanation is this: if you are uploading a lot of images at one time, you might find it easier to do if you find that one button and toggle it before uploading. On a borrowed computer, toggling it back when finished is probably the best thing. The discussion that I provided the link to (Help desk upload form options) mentions some ways to configure the user space here so that no matter what computer you are on, things will work a certain way. There are options in the preferences that this web site stores for you that can be set.
- I am not certain how many configuration options there are on a Windows or Macintosh computer, but on this linux computer I have between 6 to 10 layers of configuration options (that I know of). It could take a lifetime, perhaps, to set everything just right if you get too picky or if they upgrade and change things too much. -- carol (talk) 22:54, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Your WTM photos
Hi Jim. It see you've been uploading your own WTM photos. Thanks for taking part of the load! It would be great if you could label them with templates like at Image:WSTM Three Blind Mice 0003.JPG, so that we can put everything in the structure of User:WTMuploader/gallery and Category:Images from Wikis Take Manhattan by participant/team with other folks' photos. Thanks.--Pharos (talk) 22:02, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
- Sure will. Today I finished uploading the trimmed versions of the few of my WTM pictures that were good enough to go in a Wikipedia article, though many of those only qualified because there weren't any pics already there. My backlog today is only a week and a half so there's a good chance of getting back to place WTM templates in all the already uploaded ones this week. Thanks for checking, Pharos! Please link images
Hello Jim.henderson/Archive 1!
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 11:03, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Park Avenue Viaduct
I just came across this photo of Park Avenue winding around Grand Central. Just wanted to say it's a neat shot; you normally never see this place except from a car. I didn't even know the road went like that until I took my bike up there on a day Park Avenue was closed... was this shot taken during the Summer Streets event? --LordAmeth (talk) 16:53, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
- Sure; nice to be appreciated. I've never been there by car. That's my Brompton in foreground. All the pix in Category:Vanderbilt Avenue (Manhattan) but two were taken at Grand Central during Summerstreets, and several in various WP articles including en:Cornelius Vanderbilt, en:Bowery Savings Bank, and en:Folding bicycle. Drat; the en:Park Avenue Tunnel had a police guard making sure I didn't bike on down there for some inside pix. Maybe next time I can sneak in when the cop isn't looking. Wanna meet then? I plan to buy a Geocoding camera this Monday, making it easier to figure where I've been. Jim.henderson (talk) 03:17, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.
Thank you.

Great seeing Van Siclen Ave J Train Station photo
Hey Jim, I haven't been back to my old neighborhood since 1975 and recently came across some street views of my block, the tenements and the train station. On that I noticed there are now 2 stairways coming down to the street from the token booth. Was hoping to get a better view of that. Thought perhaps one is for handicap access via escalator. Made me wonder how a handicapped individual can figure out which stations are accessible. Thanks for the photos! Virginia
- Thanks; I am pleased that en:Van Siclen Avenue (BMT Jamaica Line) pleases you. Like most of my station pix, it was made in a hurry. On my way to New Hyde Park I simply stuck the camera out the door at every stop and clicked. Almost as often, I'm going somewhere afoot or by bicycle, and get a not quite as hasty shot from the street. Mostly, I just use a dozen or so stations that serve my needs, so those are the only ones that are well covered unless someone else photographs them. Today in southwestern Staten Island I snapped a bunch of stations but dawdled and got lost, so the stations east of New Dorp got poor coverage and so did some western ones that I failed to find while wandering around lost. I suspect a stations or two got completely missed, but hope to find time to process and insert the good pics about a week from now.
- I assume the handicapped start with something like en:List of New York City Subway stations and look for the little wheelchair symbol, or use more specialized websites. If the latter, those sites ought to have links in that article. And for that matter, any site whose pix help a particular Wikipedia article should have a relevant link.
