Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name

ID of Kenyan birds

[edit]

I'm sorry, but I didn't get the e-mail you sent me. I hate to put you to extra trouble, but could you resend it? I definitely want to get those pictures identified correctly. This talk page or my page at the English Wikipedia might be a little more reliable than my yahoo e-mail. —JerryFriedman 15:34, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ID

[edit]

Thanks first of all for improving Blacksmith Lapwing and adding some good photos to it. Also, your ID of n-br Kittlitz's Plover is correct, but some other excellent pictures of tricky species have wrong IDs. All very valuable to wikipedia. Consider adding the English bird names to your gallery, as an ID problem would be more obvious.

Thanks for doing all this checking! I'm sorry to make it necessary.
Are you looking at my gallery on Wikipedia? That has all the English names and links to the articles, and you can see all the thumbnails together.
Speaking of Kittlitz's Plover, do you know why Zimmerman et al. (Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania) don't mention a non-breeding plumage? Something that should be mentioned in the article, such as that East African birds have the same plumage all year, or just an oversight?

I suppose it is just to save space, otherwise that guide is excellent. Sinclair and Ryan show the n-br plumage as very similar to the juvenile. JMK 17:56, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1. The Lissotis melanogaster is certainly Lissotis hartlaubii, actually the scarcer and more range restricted of the two. The neck here is too grey and the face is too dark, but admittedly the two species concerned are very similar.

I feel foolish about this one, since I put all the ID details into en:Black-bellied Bustard. By the way, if you feel like improving pictures, that one was taken through a van window and the color is too cool. I did as much with it as I felt I could, but I'm somewhat color-blind and don't have good software.

Will do so. Large file! JMK 17:56, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2. 'Northern Anteater-chat' is almost surely the Northern Black Flycatcher, Melaenornis edolioides. The tail is too long for the Chat and the plumage is too black. I also considered Southern Black Flycatcher, but your locality is in range for the former and out of range for the latter.

I'd been seeing so many N. Anteater-chats that I jumped to a conclusion, though as you say, it's clear in the picture.

3. The 'Eastern Pale Chanting Goshawk' is actually a Gabar Goshawk. This is another tricky one: The Chanting Goshawk species do show barring on the underside of the tail, but not as clearly as the Gabar. Also, the adult Eastern Chanting Goshawk will have a yellow cere and sometimes yellow legs. One must however consider Dark Chanting Goshawk, but besides the tail barring, that one will have a darker chest.

That's a tough one, but judging by pictures on the Web, Zimmerman et al.'s pictures have some misleading features, so I'll agree with you. Maybe it's my color-blindness, though, but the cere does look yellow to me and the legs look orange, not red.

The color-blindness is pulling a trick on you there. The cere and feet are almost uniformly pinkish red. JMK 17:56, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

4. The 'Olive Thrush' on your photo was indeed Olive Thrush, but according to new taxonomy is a Mountain Thrush, Turdus abyssinicus.

I'll note that at the description, but Wikipedia hasn't made that revision, unless you're planning to do it. Who's the authority, by the way?

Authority is Gmelin, 1789. Can mail you revision by Bowie et al, if it interests you. JMK 17:56, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

5. The Pycnonotus barbatus is the immature of some Lamprotornis Starling, which one I'm not able to guess now, possibly L. superbus or L. hildebrandti.

Looks a lot like juvenile hildebrandti, now that you mention it. Another case of seeing the expected common bird. Well, that's good, because we have a picture of a Common Bulbul.

6. I'm fairly confident that the Anthus cinnamomeus is the east African lark race Mirafra africana athi. Have some photos of a neighboring race that are almost identical.

After all that discussion I had with our guide about pipits and larks! Yes, I'm now sure you're right, after a good look at the other Mirafra species in Zimmerman.

7. The African Stone Chat has now been split from the Common Stone Chat. Your photo of the African Stone Chat can be assigned to the race Saxicola torquata axillaris. I improved the photo and can e-mail it to you.

Before you do that, would you mind reflecting it so it'll face into the page in the taxobox? My @#$%^&* software won't do that—don't get me started. Anyway, I'll label the subspecies.
And if you're planning to improve any of the the other pictures, I can send you the originals instead of the cropped and usually slightly processed ones here, if you'd rather.

You're welcome to. JMK 17:56, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have personal experience of all the species concerned, but I'm familiar with similar species in South Africa. Still checking the other photos.

JMK 10:14, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I may take you up on that. How are you on photos of East African cisticolas? (At least, I think that's what they are.) Too bad I didn't have a tape recorder. —JerryFriedman 19:29, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JMK!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Translation of dodo poem

[edit]

Hi, I'm working on the dodo article on English Wikipedia, and it would be nice to include a translated version of the old Dutch poem found here which you added to the description:[1] If you have the time, would you like to make a direct translation of it? I know of another translation, but it is not a direct translation, and changes words to make them rhyme in English too. FunkMonk (talk) 02:35, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I made an attempt at a very direct translation. The first word "Victali" however, is unfamiliar to me, but reminds of "vitalization" or in other words, "refreshment". I may be dead wrong however - it may just as well mean palm wine or something else. The Dutch used here is hard to understand, and I'm not a first language Dutch speaker. Also added a note about the 24-25 dodos that they took aboard, with the web reference included. JMK (talk) 20:00, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Very nice, many thanks! Here is the other translation, perhaps it gives some clues:
"For food the seamen hunt the flesh of feathered fowl,
They tap the palms, and round-rumped dodos they destroy,
The parrot's life they spare that he may peep and howl,
And thus his fellows to imprisonment decoy." FunkMonk (talk) 00:02, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Made it even more direct so that you can check it yourself word for word. I had the above poem to guide me, and it was still difficult. "Stiuten" by the way, means coccyx (plural), but I assume they mean that the whole hind of the dodo was plump and round. Won't call my translation authoritative, but doubt that it will be very far wrong either. JMK (talk) 06:13, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, and I see you're South African, wouldn't that make the language of the poem even more understandable to you than to a modern Dutchman? Since I read on, well, Wikipedia, that Africaans is close to 17th century Dutch! FunkMonk (talk) 06:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A Dutchman would have more insight here. For instance, the word "muit" for a "coop" still exists in current Dutch, and is found on Dutch wikipedia's Falconry page, but I've never encountered it in Afrikaans. JMK (talk) 06:33, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you.
