Botanical duplicates

[edit]

Hi, it is not necessary to have the same photo in the gallery article and the Category of the botanical plant. The article or gallery name only goesin the Category, the photo goes in the gallery. I have changed a few for you. WayneRay 10:24, 20 June 2007 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Ok, thank you. I don't know all rules of placing pictures in commons. I will try not to make dublicate photos in categories in the future. Hugo.arg 16:52, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but as a note, if there is no gallery, please leave a copy in the category, someone else may create a page or place it somewhere appropriate.Great photos though. WayneRay 19:43, 20 June 2007 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
Most all of the photos you are putting in Categories DO HAVE galleries. Plese only put your photos in the galleries if there is one, not the categories, Thanks you WayneRay 20:08, 23 July 2007 (UTC)WayneRya[reply]

OK, no problem. Hugo.arg 20:13, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agawa River

[edit]

Hello. Thanks for nominating my Image:Agawa River, Ontario.jpg photo as a featured picture candidate. I am honoured; thank you! The person who said the image was not tilted but that the tree is really crooked is quite correct. If you look at my other photo of the canyon ( en:Image:Agawa Canyon, Ontario.jpg, you can see the same super-tilted tree near the centre of the image. --Kralizec! 02:01, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank YOU for these great photos! I like very much landscapes with rivers so I nominated this one, unfortunately some voters voted against. I wish you good luck to take such nice picture that it would be voted as featured :) Hugo.arg 08:35, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Hugo.arg, your above image cannot show Geranium sylvaticum but very probably Geranium sanguineum. I moved it there. My reasons for this can be found on the discussion page of the image. I did not change your personal gallery page, however. So you might do this and also check my changes because I only contribute a few changes time and again to Wikipedia or the Wikimedia pages - or complain (here or by mail, see http://www.flogaus-faust.de/bc/mail.htm) if you think that moving your images was a bad thing to do. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Image dates when transferring to Commons

[edit]

Hi there. I am aware it's well over seven years since you transferred File:ValgaTrainStation.jpg to Wikimedia Commons, and that currently you might be more knowledgeable about the transfer process.

The issue is that the file lacks any original date information, in part because a number of cameraphones of the time were not equipped with functionality to save EXIF data.

Therefore, I'd like to remind you that in case a photo uploaded to a non-Commons Wikimedia project lacks any date information both in the EXIF field well below the file page and the image description itself, and if or when you are about to transfer pictures from other Wikimedia projects to Commons, you should then remember to include the original file upload date as the earliest possible date as reference.

The other issue is that the Valga train station was built in 1949 after a project by V.P. Tsipulin (В.П. Ципулин), known as the "Leningrad architect", and this means that the building as a work of architecture is not in the public domain. (Unfortunately, the full name of V.P. Tsipulin is not known and neither is the time of his passing).

btw, Merry Christmas. -Mardus (talk) 17:08, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Misidentification of File:CardamineAmara01.JPG

[edit]

Hi Hugo.arg, I just changed the ID of your image left above in the gallery. It cannot show Cardamine amara for the following reasons: Cardamine amara has violet anthers, white flowers (not pinkish as in your photo with an obviously pink flower bud), usually so much foliage that it would be visible on your image and it grows in extremely wet places only, i.e. habitats which you usually would not want to step on because otherwise your shoes would be full of water or at least extremely muddy. Your photograph looks rather like a plant on a lawn rather than in a swamp. Therefore, your plant is almost certainly Cardamine pratensis, at least something from the aggregate, but I do not see any reason to consider anything other than ordinary Cardamine pratensis likely. Please compare the images above. Cardamine pratensis is supposed to have pink or (sometimes only almost) white flowers and light yellow anthers, which is a much better match for your photograph. Your photograph still requires renaming. With best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 16:18, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for clarification. It can be deleted as now Commons is full of various Cardamine photograhies. Hugo.arg (talk) 19:11, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Referring to your deletion request, I suggest that my ID is very likely good enough for Commons. Cardamine pratensis is a rather complicated aggregate of subspecies or microspecies, at least in Germany. Two taxa that have been considered species separate from Cardamine pratensis for some years in Germany, Cardamine dentata and Cardamine udicola, are rather rare species of very wet soils, a habitat which I consider to be unlilkely for your plant. I have no idea which microspecies or subspecies you have got in your place, however; you would need to look into a rather new flora of the area. Also, there might be different opinions about what constitutes a species among the experts; e.g., the Austrian flora by Adler and Fischer has a tendency to consider almost anything a species, which is just a subspecies or a variety in other books. Therefore, I am a little bit cautious about the correctness of my ID. There are lots of photographs of Cardamine pratensis, but not all of these are good, whereas your photograph looks quite good to me for the rather tricky light pink flowers on a much darker background. The photograph is as sharp as it can be for two plants of Cardamine pratensis in one photograph and there are hardly any blown lights as far as I can see. It also has almost 6 megapixels resolution. I am not even entirely sure whether this might be an acceptable quality image candidate. So, personally I see no good reason to delete the photograph. If it were one of my unpublished photgraphs I would publish it on Commons. By the way, there is also no reason to assume that the other photographs of Cardamine pratensis on Commons were identified more reliably. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 10:21, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I am not a biologist. Once I have made this photography, I was consulted by professional biologist User:Algirdas (now inactive as Wikipedia user). Sure, he could made mistakes as botany is not his main speciality. This plant grown in a wet meadow alongside Primula farinosa (file:PrimulaFarinosa001.JPG), Dactylorhiza baltica, Myosurus minimus, etc. This place is not a swamp or muddy Alnus coast but a wet meadow with a heavy clayish soil in suburbian area. I could try to check that place if I'll found the same Cardamine, I would make more photographies for identification. Hugo.arg (talk) 13:31, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information. Primula farinosa (which may grow in valley bogs) and Myosorus minimus (which usually grows in arable fields, though) are usually on very moist or wet soils, may be not as wet as those with Cardamine amara, but almost so. I do not know Dactylorhiza baltica yet, but it seems that it is also frequently found in valley bogs. But Glechoma hederacea, which may be the violet flowers that are out of focus in the background of the photo are more compatible to ordinary Cardamine pratensis, which likes fresh to moist soils. And mowing does not damage the Glechoma plants much. So Glechoma hederacea grows abundantly in meadows and especially on lawns. The ID of the background flowers is a bit speculative, though, because they are so much out of focus and your flora may contain some species I am not so familiar with. The microspecies that are usually excluded from Cardamine pratensis in Germany grow on extremely wet soils, just as Cardamine amara. All the best --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 19:06, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Robert Flogaus-Faust! Success - I have found it in the same place. See the photogaphies at https://photos.app.goo.gl/VEPeNgEbQ34HxMXe8. Looks like pratensis but give a look as a professional. Regards, Hugo.arg (talk) 15:52, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry, but I am not a professional, just an amateur. And as I already told you, I have not got a flora of the Baltic area, where I could look which microspecies of Cardamine pratensis should be distinguished. I am not even sure from your photos whether the leaflets of the lower stem leafs are stalked (possible Cardamine dentata) or whether they are not or just a few. The Fischer/Oswald/Adler flora of Austria even uses stuff like length of the petals and fruits, size of the pollen grains, length of hairs at the lower stem leaves and similar stuff that you can hardly see on any photo. So this is still Cardamine pratensis, at least in the larger sense. If you wish to know more, you need at least a local flora and some time to check everything the key says. By the way, here is a page that can show you how Cardamine dentata leaves are supposed to look and also those of C. pratense, even though the page is in German: [1]. Apparently other microspecies are not considered here. With best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 18:19, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Misidentification of File:CentaureaJacea001.JPG

[edit]

Hi Hugo.arg, your image File:CentaureaJacea001.JPG was misidentified. I do not know where it is from and I am not entirely sure what it is, but it might be Centaurea scabiosa because of the green, black-tipped involucral bracts and the few leaves that do not look as if they are entire. The leaves of Centaurea scabiosa are pinnatisect. The involucral bracts of Centaurea jacea are typically more or less brown. Best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 16:24, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Robert Flogaus-Faust. Thank You for notification. Indeed, it looks like scabiosa, which is also very common here in Lithuania. But as we can not see the leaves very well and the photo is old and blurry, I guess it is better to delete it at all as there is a bunch of better photographies of any jacea's. Hugo.arg (talk) 16:36, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Hugo.arg, I am not sure whether this photo should be deleted, but the plants do not look really sharp. So you might ask for deletion. However, if there are no lookalikes in LIthuania, then this could be kept and renamed. "Flora Europaea" would be a difficult choice in this case, because there is such a huge number of Mediterranean species. However, assuming that at least the older versions of the "Schmeil-Fitschen" flora of Germany cover most of the flora of the Kaliningrad area, Lithuania is not far east of the area covered by this flora. Therefore, this is very probably Centaurea scabiosa. Best wishes --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 17:14, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Misidentification of File:Dagys002.JPG

Hi Hugo.arg, your image File:Dagys002.JPG shows Cirsium vulgare instead of Carduus acanthoides. User:Teacoolish corrected the category and the Latin name a long time ago. I changed the Lithuanian name and replaced the image on lt:Dygliuotasis dagys. I do not know whether your image should be renamed. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 20:48, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You, Robert Flogaus-Faust. I suggested it for renaming. Also, isn't File:Dagys001.JPG also Cirsium vulgare? I do not remember exactly, as it was 15 years ago, but I think, I made this photography of the same or nearby growing plant. Hugo.arg (talk) 07:47, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nude Mexican woman of Aguascalientes

[edit]

Hello. Can you please explain why are you taking File:Nude Mexican woman of Aguascalientes.svg off of the cat People of Aguascalientes? You even reverted without explanation.

I’m creating a compendium of what Mexican women’s body look by state based on my models. I’m an Anthropologist and also an Artist. And there is a wide array of diversity within Mexico.

I wouldn’t do so if their portrayal were untasteful, or without consent. In this case, she is a woman that shows what a nude woman from the state of Aguascalientes looks like.

This is why this file belongs to that cat. Miguel Angel Omaña Rojas (talk) 19:18, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Well, these pictures are of doubtful significance more than personal creation. But as You say they are based on real women then this must be clearly noted at description because for me this series looked more like imaginary creation. Anyways, this is bad idea to categorize these images with city categories - personally, I was shocked when searching for a picture of Aguascalientes city I found this thing. These are representations of anonymous women and sketched as paintings so they isn't a real representations of "people of Aguascalientes" or other places. Category:Nude women in Mexico should be enough. Saludos, Hugo.arg (talk) 19:30, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. The description is: “Nude Mexican woman from the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico. Digital art by Miguel Angel Omaña Rojas (2024).” What would you suggest it could be changed in the description in order to be more clearly noted as to inform it is not imaginary, as you said you personally thought so? [edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.
