Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

The new upload form
[edit]Hi! When you use the new upload form with own fields for everything in the information template, you don’t have to use the information template in the English description field in the form. I think that’s what you did when you uploaded Image:Central roundel1.PNG and Image:Bakerloo roundel1.PNG. Ask me if you have any questions. Good luck on the Commons! ;) — H92 (t · c · no) 15:29, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
What is the difference between the two? Central_roundel1.PNG was previously deleted as a dupe, before you re-uploaded it... AnonMoos 16:03, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:56, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit]This media was probably deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:TCH.gif. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:TCH.gif ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

I'm sure these images will work fine in s-rail headers (as their descriptions indicate they were intended to be used), but they are less helpful in route diagrams, as one would need to know the TTC's colour coding to understand what they indicate (whereas the previous icons were quite clear). Therefore I have reverted them from the Rail-interchange template. Useddenim (talk) 21:14, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:Phantom and jaguar 14 squadron.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Phantom and jaguar 14 squadron.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2020! Please help with this survey
[edit]Dear Hammersfan,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 200K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Please fill in this short survey, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.
Kind regards,
the Wiki Loves Monuments team, 08:27, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
Gannet ASW and AEW comparison.png
[edit]If possible, could you please respond to the question at File_talk:Gannet_ASW_and_AEW_comparison.png#Sources of composite image? TheFeds 07:53, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding; I was hoping that there might be a higher-resolution version available, given the pixellation and inconsistent line weights and shading of the ones in the document.
However, the particular sources ([1] and [2]) do raise a potential issue regarding copyright. The terms of use of that website don't seem to grant the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence under which it was uploaded. Normally we would need to verify that the original images are validly available, before applying the CC licence tag. Do you happen to know who the uploader "Dr Dan Saranga" is, and whether they are for sure the copyright holder, and provided it under that licence (or even less restrictive terms)? The rights holder could use the Commons:CONSENT form to verify the licence, but failing that, I think we might have to delete the image because it doesn't have sufficient proof of copyright licence.
Sorry about that development; please let me know if there are reasons I'm unaware of. Also, if any of your other uploaded files are similarly affected, would you like to discuss them as well? TheFeds 07:09, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- @TheFeds: I'm not really in a place right now to be too concerned. Please feel free to do what you need to Hammersfan (talk) 08:18, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
