First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Cycle race diagrams

I did an svg version of one of your diagrams (I could not match the font though. I hope it is all right:

SVG is ideal for this sort of thing. I used Inkscape to create it.

Estimado ‪Hogweard. Muchas Gracias por el tiempo y tu trabajo. Es cierto, el tipo de letra no es el mismo, pero el resto está excelente.
La letra utilizada es Impact.
Por favor, si puedes decirme cómo hacerlo, (o pasarme un link) me encargaría de hacer los diagramas así a partir de ahora.

The letter used is Impact.

(Apologies for writing just in English: my Spanish is very, very limited.)
It is difficult to put it simply, but it is not hard to do when you are used to it. You first need to download Inkscape (https://inkscape.org/es/ or https://inkscape.org/es/). Save the file I uploaded and open it in Inkscape: you can use this as a basis for the others.
On the Inkscape screen, there is an arrow icon for selecting and dragging objects. Each bicycle and its shadow are "grouped" so you can drag them around the screen freely. The finish line can be moved about too. I duplicated the positions on your diagram by opening your PNG file in Inkscape, arranging the objects on top of it, and then deleting the original.
(Playing with Inkscape is the best way to get used to it.)
The background is made of a series of overlapping rectangles: if you want a wider diagram, drag each rectangle out to the new shape. (You will then have to increase the visible screen size: File - Document properties - Resize to page content.)
For the names, there is a text icon ("A"). Type the text, choose the right font, colour and font size and drag it where you want it. The shadow is done just by copying and pasting a copy of the text and putting it in a lighter colour, underneath (Page Down) and off-set. Commons will not recognise Impact font, so when it is done, select all the text then "Path - Object to path" (Shift+Ctrl+C).
It begins to make sense once you start to do it. It did not take me very long to do the one I uploaded, and I was starting from the beginning. If you use the one already done, it should not take long at all, once you have become accustomed to the programme.
I hope this helps a little.
