Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.
We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules. In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files. Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions. Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

File source is not properly indicated: File:D200.gif
[edit]This media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:D200.gif, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
[[:File:D200.gif]] ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

File:WQNC.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Deleted content
[edit]
- use in any work, regardless of content
- creation of derivative works
- commercial use
- free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions. And also:

Copyright violations
[edit]
Hello Gameguest38.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |

File:Stop Ahead.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Please slow down
[edit]Hi Gameguest. It's seems that you are a fairly new editor who may not be too familiar with Commons various policies and guidelines. Pretty much every file you have uploaded so far has been tagged for having issues by various other editors and some of these have even been deleted. You have already been warned once about this above by a Commons administrator named Magog the Ogre, so if you keep uploading problematic files you are going to find your account blocked from future editing. Commons understands that editors will occassionally make mistakes and upload files they shouldn't, but when the same editor keep repeating the same mistake over and over again, then an administrator will feel there is no choice left to block you. This is not to punish the editor, but to prevent them from causing any further disruption.
You're claiming that all the files you're uploading are your "own work" when that's clearly not the case. Files you find on the Internet, download to your computer, and then re-upload to Commons are not your own creative work. "Own work" implies that you created the logo yourself and that you therefore hold the copyright on it. What you're doing is equivalent to taking the a book written and published by another person (for example, one of the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling), making photocopies of the entire book, claiming that you wrote the book, and then going out and giving everyone free copies of the book. Freely licensing a file on Commons means that you are giving everyone in the world permission to download the file and use it in whatever way they like, even for commercial purposes. You simply cannot do that with other peoples' work you didn't create yourself unless they have explicitly given you their permission to do so. I am strongly suggesting that you slow down your uploads until you better familiarize yourself with Commons:Licensing. If you find a file online, you should assume that it is protected by copyright unless it is clearly specified otherwise. If you have any questions about a particular file, you should ask for assistance at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. Once again, continuing to do what you've been doing is going to most likely lead to your account being blocked. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:36, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
- Uploading the same file immediately after an administrator deletes it and then warns you not to do it again or you'll get blocked: this will, in fact, get you blocked. If you want to appeal, copy this template into the wiki text: {{unblock|1=your reason here}}. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:46, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
