Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:33, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:JanisJoplinWoodstock.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:JanisJoplinWoodstock.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:HelenReddyUniversalAmphitheatre.PNG has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Copyright violations
[edit]
Hello Ernio48.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |

Hello. This file's data source is listed as the latest Pew Research report. If you check on page 80, column 3 of the table in that report, you will see that the Orthodox population for Belarus is listed as 5,900,000. Likewise on page 81, column 3, you will see the listing for Ukraine is 34,850,000. On that basis, I believe that your June 11 file update is incorrect, as the legend color for those nations was changed, but the color in the previous file version was correct for these numbers. Would you please restore the older correct color? Thanks. Evensteven (talk) 00:30, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
Well, it was corrected after 87.13.111.236 claimed that the report gives unreliable info. He gave the results of latest censuses to back his words. Estimated Orthodox populations from these censuses: Belarus - 4,575,000; Ukraine - 12,577,000; Russia - 66,732,000. Ernio48
A recent revision of yours to File:Map of state religions.svg reintroduced an error by colouring Syria as an officially Islamic state. Could you please fix this? —Psychonaut (talk) 10:18, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Hey Ernie, if I'm doing this wrong, just tell me, I'm pretty new to this. Anyway, I was just going to ask you, I know they're pretty close but it appears that the United Kingdom and the US are less than 50% Protestant now. The United Kingdom especially but also probably the United States. Just thought I'd let you know, thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2602:304:B3E1:3E30:4480:F50:FD07:3EDB (talk) 04:06, 04 January 2017 (UTC)

The Holy Roman Empire never included Prussia (this is why the Hohenzollerns could become kings of Prussia):

See this animated map showing the evolution of HRE borders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3it0qKZPh8
The map you posted in the Infobox of the Holy Roman Empire article is wrong.

- Stop being rude. I responded on Holy Roman Empire Talk page.
- Eastern Pomerania became Teutonic in 1308-1309, and Silesia became part of the HRE in the 1300s. Not in the 1200s. Your map is wrong. Something tells me you are not unbiased considering you are emotionally enraged by the expulsion of Germans after WW2. Perhaps you should read these articles (linked below) as well, the majority of Germans escaped on their own before the Soviet Red Army came, and they did not even want to go back to their homes after the end of the war:
- What sources did you use for your map? The burden of proof is on the one who makes edits to Wikipedia, not the one who reverts them.
- Domen von Wielkopolska (talk) 23:10, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
- That is another map on Wikipedia, probably also made by you: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Mitteleuropa_zur_Zeit_der_Staufer.svg
- That cannot be used as a source...

[edit]Copyright status: File:Protestantism in France 2012.png
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Protestantism in France 2012.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
