Hello Bodhisattwa. Thanks for the update about the event. I was working on improving the Wikidata and Commons content related to Pune Municipal Corporation heritage buildings. Wanted to know if there's a quicker way of finding images related to Pune which have been uploaded in the campaign. I checked the Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Maharashtra as well as the Category:Pune Municipal Corporation heritage buildings. Pages in the latter category appeared when I added the category manually to them. So let me know if there's any other way. Otherwise, doing a regular search would be the final resort. Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 07:07, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @DesiBoy101: , Thanks for contributing on such an important aspect. I am currently not aware of any easy way right now for what you are asking. Most probably it have to be done manually. If I find something, I will let you know. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 17:46, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again Bodhisattwa. Had a couple of queries. While manually updating this list, the bot throws some error. Kindly check and rectify. I've updated the Wikidata for Dr Mehta's Nature Cure Clinic and Sanatorium, so it should reflect in there after the bot update.
Also, is it possible to know what is the current number of highest uploads by a particular user? Been working all this month to make the campaign images cohesive with Commons and Wikidata. Might as well try for a prize for my uploads too, hehe. Let me know about it. Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 05:37, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for supporting WLM India both from the front and background. The query you have mentioned is now fixed and the table is now updated, thanks for notifying me. The current number of highest upload is 360 by Chiragb678. You are in the 5th position with 109 uploads as of now. Hope we will see more uploads from you in these last few days. Best of wishes, -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 14:15, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As the campaign wraps up, I would like to thank you Bodhisattwa for answering my queries and helping out. I've tried to upload more images, let's see now how it goes. Overall, it was a great experience visiting the places in person and documenting the heritage buildings in Pune. There's so much to a city than what normally catches the eye. With the rapid development, most of these structures have stood the test of times. They also bring a sense of calm and peace amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. Moreover, combining it with Wikidata was another fun aspect. So thanks to you and the team for successfully organizing this (yet again). Wishing everyone Shubho Pujo! Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 02:23, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for your awesome contributions. You did really a splendid job to photo-document the heritage of Pune. I will be rearranging the list of monuments district wise for next year's campaign as we are getting feedback from different participants that our current lists are hard to navigate as they are arranged according to heritage status. The lists will look more or less like this from next year.
I need few helps with the lists of Maharashtra like
a) If you can replace the administrative location of the heritage structures of Pune with the wards of Pune municipal corporation, something similar to this monument in Kolkata, then I can create municipal ward-wise lists, otherwise there would be a long lists for Pune districts, which might be an issue for many.
b) If you can add on focus list of Wikimedia project as Wiki Loves Monuments in India for any monuments from Maharashtra not listed by any government agencies, but are old and notable enough to be in Wiki Loves Monuments. This way, we can include as many important monuments for the competition as possible.
As organizers, our job is now half finished only. We will have to spend the entire month of Pujo with the sorting and jury process, but valuable contributors like you motivates us to move forward. :-) -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 05:17, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bodhisattwa: I can totally imagine the immense work that (has gone and) will go on behind the scenes now. Just working on Pune gave me a glimpse of it. Although, I believe that over the years, the team must've developed a good sense of understanding to make the process of sorting and finalizing a bit quicker than usual. Would be interesting to know some anecdotes from your past experiences about it. ;)
Coming to the feedback of the participants, it is absolutely a great idea to have a city wise list that you showed, in addition to the specific heritage status list. Towards the end of the campaign, I was thinking of adding some Delhi and Agra photos. Had to dig a bit myself to find the monuments, despite being prominent ones, even if I did not upload them. So this would be a great addition in the whole scheme of things. This leads me to the part (a) about Pune district.
As you already might be aware, unlike the KMC heritage list, the PMC heritage list is not arranged according to the wards. Therefore, I'll have to manually check each entry (251 of them) according to the ward list & map updated for 2022 PMC elections and edit them accordingly. Probably, a better idea would be to keep the PMC list as is and make separate banners for talukas under Pune heading itself. They can be clubbed in one banner or multiple ones, depending upon the number of each. I can help you with the specifics, if required. Let me know your thoughts on this. Ready to do either of these.
Moving to (b) - It is a great idea. I can definitely do that. Will have to go through the existing lists first and put in some research after that. Can you share the rough timeline as to when you're looking to get this part done?
And thanks for your appreciation btw, glad that the contributions have been noticed :D - DesiBoy101 (talk) 18:16, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Frankly, we have not figured out a smart way to sort monuments. Previously the {{Wikidata template}} which is added in the photographs automatically sorted the images in proper categories according to the corresponding P373 on the Wikidata item, but the Commons community has removed the code for some of their reasons, which is fine, but it had increased a lot of manual work for us. Also, people add all kinds of categories while uploading monuments, which is extremely difficult to track all files in a single window with all categories in front of us. Tools like Cat-a-lot and Visual File Changes can help if there are some patterns, but these tools also have their limitations.
For a), I have noticed that the list provided by PMC is not arranged ward wise and I know that there is a lot of research to be done. Even if the wards cannot be determined, I can anyway, divide the tables for Pune city and Rest of Pune district. That would not be a problem.
For b), there is no timeline. I intend to have these tables ready for next WLM, but the Wikidata updates can be done anytime, it will anyway reflect in the tables. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 06:34, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the discussion related to the template is recent, so I hope that it was probably usable for the previous editions. Either way, going through thousands of entries is quite a task. I'm sure a lot of discussions would've taken place within the team related to making the overall process easier. Not to blame the users, but the problem of adding random tags is something that needs to be touched upon. Maybe this is something you can address while stating the contest guidelines next year. Educating the users is the best bet to reduce the workload. You can show a flowchart or an image of how category works in Wiki, say Taj Mahal and its sub-cats for example. Obviously can't expect everyone to follow it, but some people do take notice and abide by it. See it that makes any sense in the whole scheme of things.
For now, let me know if I can be of any help in the current categorization process.
a) Yeah, it would be comparatively easier to create the Rest of Pune tables based on existing Wikidata. Please do keep the PMC heritage lists (grade wise) as well though. It works well this way and kinda have a personal attachment to it now, haha.
b) Great then, I'll keep working on it side by side and inform you when I'm done. DesiBoy101 (talk) 16:48, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, we will create a guideline on how to upload images for WLM. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 04:30, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Bodhisattwa: I have some questions for which you can give quick one-two word answers -
1) Is it okay to add Category:Cultural heritage monuments in India by name to all monuments in city, state and national lists?
2) Are natural heritage structures/sites (hills, sanctuaries etc. apart from the Natural World Heritage Sites) considered in WLM campaign or only built heritage?
3) Have a few Wikidata related questions. Where should I ask them, mine or your talk page? Or even here works?
Additionally, check out this discussion. Can you share how to fetch Wikidata to create tables on Wikipedia, since the relevant Wikidata has already been updated by the WLM team. I'd like to learn this process. This can be done at your convenience. Thanks - DesiBoy101 (talk) 15:54, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, the answers are as follows
  1. It is okay to add all designated monuments in city, state and national lists.
  2. Natural heritage sites are not included in WLM.
  3. It is fine to talk Wikidata in your talk page as long as it is ok for you. Or you can start the discussion in any relevant talk page.
The way to create Wikidata tables on Wikipedia is done through Listeria using this template. I was reading the discussion on English Wikipedia. I would suggest to go slow there as English Wikipedia community members are somhow conservative towards Wikidata and they sometimes do not appreciate fetching data from Wikidata. Secondly, the official website of ASI has updated their lists, so the previous identifiers no longer match with the old table on Wikipedia and on with the old data on Wikidata. We are currently updating the data on Wikidata like this, but couldn't finish the work till now for entire India. As ASI monument ID changes over time. we have reduced its importance on WLM and are not displaying the ID on our tables and files nowadays. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 02:11, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bodhisattwa (Would you get the ping if I just reply to this thread and not mention you every time?) Thank you for the answers, those three points are sorted. On the ASI Monument ID front, can you confirm if the Maharashtra IDs are updated by the team? It does make sense to not focus on the ID for table and list creation in general for WLM purposes. Although, as mentioned in the talk page discussion, there's a bot adding IDs from the Wikipedia table in the description of Commons images. It's creating confusion while categorizing the images because the monument names in ASI list itself isn't much helpful in identifying them, except the ID and location. Keeping the criticism aside, would it be fine to just follow the style that is used on the current page and just replace the entries slowly and manually? DesiBoy101 (talk) 05:05, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(I guess I will not get notification when you do not ping me.) For ASI Monument ID, we have not updated for Maharashtra till now on Wikidata. I guess, it totally makes sense to update the table on English Wikipedia. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 15:07, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Bodhisattwa - I've updated the ASI Monument IDs on Wikidata for all Maharashtra monuments and the respective Wiki pages for the three ASI circles (apparently Listeria doesn't work on mainspace of Wikipedia). Also, have categorized images in Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Maharashtra and also created Category:INTACH listed monuments in Solapur. After going through these lists, I feel the coverage is quite comprehensive and covers important sites in the state. In this process, I managed to add the wlm-in property to Wikidata of few non-designated monuments and will continue do so, as and when I find more. However, I think during the annual campaign the team should emphasize on adding images for existing lists (with no images), completing them (for India in general) and provide incentives for contributors accordingly (apart form the current prizes). See if this is something you can incorporate in the next grant cycle. Additionally, as you are keen to add more monuments and sites for the campaign, check out Heritage at Risk Register and Built Heritage Listings by INTACH, if you haven't seen them already. Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 05:54, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for working meticulously on monuments located in Maharashtra. It means a lot to us. We will find a way to incorporate the idea to give prizes for monuments with no existing images. But to do that, we might have to search for images on monuments already on Commons but not linked with relevant categories and Wikidata items and tag them accordingly, which is a very cumbersome task. I have gone through the INTACH lists, but the list of built heritage listings are just names without any other metadata, which would not be of much help. The Heritage at Risk Register can add value though. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 18:15, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bodhisattwa: Firstly, I can totally relate when you say "cumbersome task" which is actually quite true. I was hoping to work on more states but I'm literally exhausted with this process for now. That's why more people need to be involved to categorize and link Wikidata. The images have just piled up over the years (over a decade in some cases) and lie undiscovered. It would be a massive one time collective effort but it'll go a long way in realizing the true potential of WLM.
Secondly, with the current format, eventually what happens is that the famous monuments cover the major portion of uploads every year. That's why I suggested the above (rewarding lesser known monuments) so as to bring in more variety since you're also looking to constantly expand the number of monuments. If the first part is sorted until the next edition (which would be desirable) by engaging some enthusiasts active in this domain, then a better strategy could be implemented in terms of the broader coverage on a whole.
Obviously it's easier said than done and I can just go on writing about it. I personally feel this is an important project which is already reflected in my work for Pune and Maharashtra cultural heritage monuments. Discuss it with the team and see what you can come up with. I'll be around to lend whatever support possible. Lets' wrap up this conversation now, I've got some another questions for you related to the museums. Hi DesiBoy101, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

List of monuments in Maharashtra

[edit]

Hi, I have rearranged the Wiki Loves Monuments tables of monuments located in Maharashtra according to their locations in the districts as discussed before. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 18:22, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the update @Bodhisattwa. The district list as well as the navigation template look great. Just a request to add INTACH listed monuments on the Solapur page so that they get covered as well. Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 19:13, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done for INTACH listed monuments located in Solapur, which are there on Wikidata. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 08:25, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Bodhisattwa, need a suggestion from you. I'm planning to create list pages on Wikipedia for PMC heritage buildings. What would be a suitable title for the same? List of Pune Municipal Corporation heritage buildings: Grade I or List of Grade I heritage buildings in Pune etc. These are just examples, let me know your thoughts.
Also, I've managed to diffuse the images in Category:Cultural heritage monuments in India which was quite fun. What I feel is that it would be possible to streamline the state wise categories until the next WLM event if we work strategically. For example you can update the ASI monument IDs on Wikidata whereas I can continue to work with images on Commons. This is something we can discuss depending on the plans that you've got in place for the next few months. Share your ideas. Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 18:20, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I guess, the second title i.e. List of Grade I heritage buildings in Pune is more suitable for a Wikipedia article.
I have noticed your work on the broader category. You have done an incredible job to clear such a huge backlog. I agree that we should work strategically. I have plans to work on the Wikidata items, its my long due commitment, but could not spare time for it due to too many numbers of other commitments. But I will try to complete this one before WLM this year. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 17:02, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure Bodhisattwa, let me know how the work on Wikidata pans out for you. Thanks for the appreciation as well as the title suggestion.
Recently, I got to know about a list of water heritage sites in India after couple of structures from Aurangabad were identified and put into it. Maintained by Water Resources Information System, the heritage list on their website is called the Jal Itihaas. Do check it out. I feel this could be a good addition to the campaign as some of them are already protected monuments. DesiBoy101 (talk) 18:24, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! great find! I didn't know about the water heritage sites. I will work on adding them on Wikidata.-- Bodhisattwa (talk) 15:15, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Dear DesiBoy101,

I am glad to see your valuable contributions in developing list of monuments as well as uploading of images in WLM. I am happy to invite you for participation in photography campaign cum contest - Commons:Mula Mutha Nadi Darshan 2023
Please contact for any help or information.

Hello @सुबोध कुलकर्णी, hope you're doing well. Thank for your noticing my past work and inviting me for the Mula Mutha campaign. Turns out, I had already found out about it a couple of days ago on the Facebook page of Jeevitnadi (where I follow their work) and was planning to get in touch with the organizers regarding the same. So I'm glad that you contacted me here, a serendipitous moment indeed!
After going through the topics, I have some places in mind which I intend to cover. Is there anything specific that you want to be made available on Commons? I can work on that as well. Asking because while working with Pune city and district categories, I saw a similar campaign was organized in 2022. There might be some gaps identified by you which can be worked upon. Also, in case you're planning to organize a physical event during the campaign, do let me know. Perhaps we can connect then. Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 13:38, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @DesiBoy101, We are glad to see the contributions under Mula Mutha Nadi Darshan 2023 Photo campaign cum contest on Wikimedia Commons. The event is being organised in collaboration with various organisations working on the river issues. The members of these organisations have decided to extend the last date of uploading the images till 31 August 2023. The objective is to document the images of the floods during July and August months. We have also identified that images on topics like - Citizens’ initiatives to save rivers, Human activities at the river, Rivers and festivals around rivers, Pollution in the rivers - are not uploaded sufficiently. We request you to upload these images and enrich the media repository about rivers on Wikimedia Commons. Do upload images till 31 August 2023 by clicking the 'Upload photographs' tab on Home page.

Quick note re: Speedy deletion tagging

[edit]

Hello!

I was recently patrolling files tagged as copyright violations and noticed that you correctly tagged File:Salim Durani at azad maidan.jpg as a copyright violation. Thank you for doing this! Just as a quick note, it's important to let the user who uploaded the image know that you tagged it for COM:CSD. In this case, I've done it for you, but please be sure to leave a note on the uploader's talk page when you nominate files for speedy deletion going forward.

Cheers,

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
