Thanks for uploading File:Ken G. Nelson.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Speedy deletion nominations

[edit]

Please do not delete {{Copyvio}} or other speedy deletion nomination tags, as you did here. Removing these tags is contrary to Commons:Deletion policy#Speedy deletion, which says:

I have raised a regular deletion request for the file at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Christopher T Sununu.jpg. Verbcatcher (talk) 14:01, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:City of Bainbridge Island 2016 logo.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

@EugeneZelenko: what, are you saying the SVG needs a source? It was autotraced with Inkscape and then manually edited a little from File:City of Bainbridge Island 2016 logo.jpg, which as it consists of just a map (which can't be copyrighted) and simple text I don't believe crosses the TOO. DemonDays64 (talk) 15:07, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Logo has non-trivial design. If it's in public domain, proper license tag must be used. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:26, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
File:City of Bainbridge Island 2016 logo.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

@MGA73: oh! so that's like the one I redirected it to but a bot does the reviewing? probably should be in the documentation. DemonDays64 (talk) 19:01, 13 October 2020 (UTC) (please ping on reply)[reply]
Yeah. And bot operator is a bit inactive atm. But once he is back I have an idea how to get the 6k files reviewed. You could perhaps argue that a review is not needed because they were uploaded semi automatically. So we allready have one tool checking the files. --MGA73 (talk) 19:04, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading a new version of File:USA lane splitting legality.svg

[edit]

I cannot upload SVG, so please upload a new version per revised File:USA lane splitting legality.png while Arizona Governor signed a bill into law while waiting for the effective date. Thanks.--Jusjih (talk) 03:08, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You can very easily edit the map -- just download it and open it with any text editor such as Notepad, TextEdit, Atom, VSCode, etc. Move .az from the illegal list to the legal list in the bottom area of the style tag at the top. DemonDays64 (talk) 00:57, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the notice on the Superman image. Like I said on my talk page it makes sense. I've learned a lot more about Dos and Don'ts of derivative works in the last few months. Sad because I wish we could have more available imagery for Superman, but I understand the restriction. I'm just glad that the public domain is open again. And that there are so many different types of things that we can upload now. I think the one distinction that is interesting is that cartoons/animated characters and characters with illustrated origins fall under a separate copyright restriction. I like the election and political maps. I've only tried those a few times and they are tough, so big commendation for that! MonkeyBBGB (talk) 18:56, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. GPSLeo (talk) 18:40, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In case you are still interested, I found a way to do it and already have some crops on my disk. However, I have some questions before I upload:

  • File format. PNG-compressed, they are quite large (800M+ the largest one), and they won't produce good thumbnails. I'd like to convert them to JPEG; do you have any reason not to, given that originals remain and crops can be done again if desired?
  • Resolution. Largest of files is comparable to tiles of original image (23696 x 16696), so it can't be normally manipulated too. Should I aim for upper bound on pixel size?
  • Names. For now, I keep them as (closest image already available).png. If I convert to JPEGs, this breaks. So there might be a reason to adopt a consistent naming at least for my uploads. Any ideas?

Gabuxae (talk) 13:59, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gabuxae Hello! Sorry for the super late reply. If you check out this category of "high-resolution details" of the painting, you can see that about a year ago I did manage to make some cropped versions — I believe by using Croptool for an initial very laggy crop, and then cropping it into various components in Paint.NET. I don't think any of them were made from the tiled image, so they could be even higher-res, but they are way better than what we had previously, and certainly good enough for the Wikipedia page imo.
I think the ones I made are sufficient replacements for what was there but if you have higher-quality equivalents, feel free to overwrite mine. If you have made any additional useful crops — the WP page still has images that are not very hi-fi — feel free to put additional ones in that category. I am really not very active these days, and the details of the resolution and stuff are totally up to you (and I am honestly not knowledgeable about the stuff you mentioned with how to get images to render well on MediaWiki).
Thanks for your contributions! DemonDays64 (talkcontribsuploads) 11:21, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, the "super late" applies to my reply even more. Yup, my crops are about 3.5 times larger by side, but this doesn't seem to be much better for encyclopedic purposes. I'll definitely upload those crops that you didn't. If you want me to overwrite, please tag your images with {{Allow Overwriting}} - Gabuxae (talk) 08:57, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.
