Thanks
[edit]Thank you very much for the many pictures of Braunschweig! Greetings, --Jonny84 (talk) 14:57, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
- And thank you for understanding Braunschweig so well and making sure that the photos are filed properly. If you live there, you are a very lucky person. What a remarkable city! with all best wishes, Daderot (talk) 22:24, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
Category:Kissel 1928 White Eagle (Wisconsin Historical Museum)
[edit]I recently toured the Wisconsin Automobile Museum in Hartford Wisconsin [1] and I'm wondering if this is the same building that you toured. I added a location map to the flickr image. I saw no indication of the Wisconsin Historical Society involvement. I have a series of Kissel, etc. photographs to upload soon and I was considering if it is time for a museum-level category. Please respond here on your talk page to keep the discuss centralized. Thank you. RoyalbroilAlt (talk) 18:38, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
- Well that's very interesting! I have not been to the Wisconsin Automobile Museum, and took my picture in Madison at the Wisconsin Historical Museum. But it sure looks to me like the Automobile Museum is worthy of a museum-level category, and we're very lucky that you have a number of photos to upload. Thank you! and best wishes, Daderot (talk) 15:52, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
- Got it, thanks! I have been considering driving to Madison to tour the Wisconsin Historical Society sometime. I'm much more excited to see it now. Their website makes it look to be strictly a research storage facility. Royalbroil 13:21, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
Arista tiles
[edit]Hello, I'm very interested in the arista tiles from Alcazar of the following link:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arista_tiles,_16th_century_-_Alc%C3%A1zar_of_Seville,_Spain_-_DSC07336.JPG#filehistory.
There aren't any details about them in the description other than they're from Seville. Do you have any information of where it was taken? Was it a specific museum? I'm writing a paper on a similar tile and it would be useful to have it as a reference.
Thank you. R.L. Montes
- Hello, R. L. Montes! I took that photo inside the Alcázar of Seville, which now serves as a museum. However, as you point out, the description given for the tiles was quite vague. So I don't know if the tiles come from the Alcázar or somewhere else. I'm sorry I don't have more detailed information than that, but would be very glad to help in any way that I can. Best wishes to you, Daderot (talk) 22:27, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Image: Heartnut?, Mount Auburn Cemetery
[edit]Hello "Daderot", i commented upon File_talk:Juglans_ailantifolia,_Mount_Auburn_Cemetery.JPG Maybe someone got a chance to take further photos of the same tree to prove my suspicion. There could be a sign telling it was "var. cordiformis", heartnut, still mixing up happens easily, in especial in case of hybrids. Han Dynasty period Chinese art from the Sichuan provincial museum
[edit]These are fantastic images! Thanks for sharing them. Do you have any more of them? If so, feel free to share them too! I've been adding your images to articles already. Cheers. PericlesofAthens (talk) 14:53, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi PericlesofAthens - Thank you so much. It's a great museum. Those are all the photos I have, and I believe those are all the exhibits on display when I was there. There were a few more pieces in the Sichuan University Museum (it looks like the provincial museum sometimes lends pieces to the university museum). with all best wishes to you, Daderot (talk) 09:25, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Mistaken file uploads
[edit]Hi Daderot. How's it going? I saw your deletion request for the photo of the dining room. I just wanted to let you know of an easy way to mark files for renaming, after they have been uploaded. I'm not sure if you know this already so apologies if I am repeating it. You can use {{rename|New name.jpg|1}}
on the file page. As the uploader, it is acceptable for you to request a rename for any reason (other motives are detailed at Commons:File renaming). In the past with renamings I have marked, administrators have responded quite quickly. It also saves having to reupload the file. Cheers, seb26 (talk) 14:13, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Photo of National Security Operations Center
[edit]Hi... Not sure if you've seen the discussion page for your National Security Operations Center photograph but the date for the photograph appears to be wrong -- I noticed that the IBM PC and the Epson printer would seem to be much later than 1975 (apparently Jdmurray15 thinks so, too). I didn't want to issue a "move" request without checking with you, though --Jhfrontz (talk) 17:56, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hi there! No, I hadn't seen the discussion, so thank you for the pointer. I agree that the IBM PC came after 1975 - I remember those days. The caption does appear to be wrong, and I don't have any issue with you moving the file. Thank you for the heads up, and thank you twice for fixing things! Daderot (talk) 23:05, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Daderot,
Thanks a lot for sharing your images, great stuff! I just used a bunch of details from your Klee and Kandinsky photos for my web page
https://tu-dresden.de/mn/math/geometrie/kraehmer?set_language=en
as I am fed up with these generic photos of coffee mugs, black boards and happy students that fill university web pages these days. I attribute the copyright in each picture to you and added a thanks to at the page

I hope that is fine with you, if not just let me know, please!

- Hi Uli, I am very, very happy that you can use these photos. The art is wonderful, and it is now in the public domain. Aren't we lucky? I do not have any copyright in these images - they are fully in the public domain. But I do appreciate your note and thanks. As a former mathematics student (logic and set theory), I really appreciate your page. with all best wishes to you, Daderot (talk) 22:15, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
"Thuja sutchuenensis" at Hilliers
[edit]Hi Daderot - I showed File:Thuja sutchuenensis - Hillier Gardens - Romsey, Hampshire, England - DSC04427.jpg (and - DSC04429.jpg) to an expert on Cupressaceae, and he concluded the photos show Cupressus funebris, not even a Thuja at all. Could you remove the above pic from en:Thuja sutchuenensis please, then I will rename the two files to their correct identity without leaving redirects, so that searching for Thuja sutchuenensis will not find them. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 21:27, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

Another ID query
[edit]Hi Daderot - File:Lythrum maritimum - Botanischer Garten, Frankfurt am Main - DSC02714.JPG you have named Lythrum maritimum, but the garden label in the photo says Lythrum hyssopifolia. I'm not familiar with either species, but the Plant List accepts them as separate species (from South America and Europe, respectively); are you sure the garden label is incorrect? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 11:36, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hi MPF - Happy holidays to you! I believe this is my mistake. I do use the Plant List to check for synonyms, and cannot see any reason why I would confuse the two names. Thank you for correcting things, and all best wishes to you. Daderot (talk) 11:43, 24 December 2017 (UTC)

"TLDR: someone is stealing WLM photo on https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/paul-fearn.html?tab=artwork&page=11 :/ Longer story: WMFR just received an OTRS message from a WLM competitor who discovered that someone is wrongly taking credits for its WLM photos (and other WLM files and other files from Commons apparently) on the fineartamerica website. This competitor send a mail to this website and asked if WMFR can help in any way. So now, I'm sending you this mail to know whether you had to deal with things like this or if you have any ideas of what should be done." I noticed your photo because i live in Helsinki and the classhouse was familiar me. Those WLM-photos in question are not in PD. I'm not disturbing you any longer and best wishes for the New Year to you too! --Htm (talk) 03:27, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

- Greetings to you! I believe that this is your question: "Category:Turbans of India and this cat (Category:Dastar)., can they be the same thing? Who knows?". Am I right? Unfortunately I do not have a very good understanding of the situation. However, my belief is that 'Dastar' are turbans specific to Sikh people. If so, this is different from the more-general 'Turbans of India'. But we should find an expert to tell us. with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 22:32, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
Soami Painting for making t-shirts?
[edit]Hello Daderot,
I am in the process of making t-shirts that have an art component to them and I wanted to use your photohgraph of Soami's "Li Bai viewing the waterfall" on one of the shirts. Is this something you would be against? On my behalf, for what its worth, I can only say that I believe that images impact people and the more people feast their eyes on Japanese painting of that period, the better. If you want to get back on me on this that would be great, I could also send you specimens of how the t-shirts look. On any case, as someone who has as I can see from above learn't from experience a lot about photography copyright and old paintings, I would also like your perspective on what the grey areas are in this issue. Best, Agy.
- Greetings Agy - I am 100% in favor of your project. It sounds great. The art itself is old enough so that it is in the public domain, and I have put my photo in the public domain. Therefore, you are free and clear to do absolutely anything you want with this image. And as a fan of Li Bai, I'm delighted he will appear in your t-shirts. with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 12:54, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

Carved handprints in Japan
[edit]Hello. You uploaded photos of carved handprints in Japan:
- File:Toho movie handprint - Hibiya, Chiyoda, Tokyo - DSC09707.JPG
- File:Toho movie handprint - Hibiya, Chiyoda, Tokyo - DSC09702.JPG
- File:Toho movie handprint - Hibiya, Chiyoda, Tokyo - DSC09705.JPG
I wonder whether you are aware that freedom of panorama does not apply to artistic works in Japan, especially per Template:NoFoP-Japan. Moreover, those handprints look creative enough for copyright. See also Commons:Deletion requests/File:Kitanoumi handprint.JPG, which I was involved in.
There are more at Category:Handprints in Hibiya, but we'll get to those later as I'm unsure whether de minimis applies. --George Ho (talk) 09:17, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
- Greetings! I have no idea whether handprints can be protected by copyright. That's a really interesting question.... First, let me say that I do not have a problem with removing them if that makes sense. That said, I'm not an attorney, but have had fun reading various US copyright regulations and interpretations, which of course might be quite different from the regulations in Japan. In the US, it seems that "Natural forms and images are part of the public domain, which means that no person can own a copyright or a patent on them." Possibly handprints fall into this category as a natural form. And the US is clear that the following cannot be protected by copyright: "Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans". Also: "US law does not grant copyright for typical personal signatures, so the only issue will usually be whether the signature is protected under local law. In many—but not all—countries, a typical signature is not considered sufficiently original to be granted copyright protection." So these prints are - possibly - natural forms with names, signatures, and short phrases. In short, it's certainly a puzzler to me. But as I say, I do not have any strong objections to removing them if that makes sense. with best wishes to you, Daderot (talk) 22:45, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. Um... you may want to use {{Speedydelete}} on the files and save them into your hard drive, print them out, or something. Or you can copy them into Google Photos. It's much quicker and more efficient than DR, IMHO. Moreover, the bot can remove any deleted images from articles that use them. George Ho (talk) 00:22, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Hi again. I added the "no permission since" tag on File:Toho movie handprint - Hibiya, Chiyoda, Tokyo - DSC09707.JPG; please feel free to add {{Speedydelete}}, which would lead to a quicker deletion. I haven't added the tag on others yet as I have been hoping that you can add the "speedydelete" tag. George Ho (talk) 07:36, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
Hello again. I resized the following images to help meet COM:de minimis:
- File:Toho movie handprints - Hibiya, Chiyoda, Tokyo - DSC09701.JPG
- File:Toho movie handprints - Hibiya, Chiyoda, Tokyo - DSC09706.JPG
I wonder whether you agree with the resizing. --George Ho (talk) 05:00, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

Harvard, Massachusetts has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Boy with pigeon at Tokyo National Museum
[edit]Hi, could you please have a look at the description I added to your your file? I guess the given information is enough to add PD template with source. Would you consider adding such PD template to this file? (Artwork is called in Japanese
)
Thank you indeed to contribute and introduce important works of human kind to Commons, and happy dropping by via working on wikidata! Cheers, --Omotecho (talk) 09:06, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- Greetings Omotecho - Thank you! I think your changes are very good. They add considerable value to the image. I am not sure what "PD template with source" means, but will gladly do it when I understand. And finally, I must say that wikidata is a wonderful project, and want to thank you for working on it. with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 09:58, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

Cunigunde of Luxemburg (Shinjuku)
[edit]Hello Daderot,
I certainly see benefit in linking/associating the two statues Category:Cunigunde of Luxemburg (Shinjuku) with Category:Cunigunde of Luxemburg (Maximiliansbrunnen, Bamberg) (and my edit did indeed lose that).
But placing Category:Cunigunde of Luxemburg (Shinjuku) cat as a sub cat of Category:Cunigunde of Luxemburg (Maximiliansbrunnen, Bamberg) means that a statue in Japan appears within the statues in Germany category.
What do you think to a new cat that covered both? For example Category:Trader Legend pole is used tolink the same sculpture in different locations, and many of Henry Moore's sculptures (under Category:Sculptures by Henry Moore) have a category for the work, and then a sub cat for the different castings.

usage of the photo of Mosaics, Worcester Art Museum - IMG 7449.JPG
[edit]Dear Daderot,
I write on behalf of Dr. Aliza Steinberg, an Israeli Art Historian whom I am assisting. Dr. Steinberg is researching the subject of Garments and Accessories in the late Antiquities in Israel.
We are currently working on publishing a scholastic book on this subject, and we would like to make use of a photo that you published online in the following link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mosaics,_Worcester_Art_Museum_-_IMG_7449.JPG
We ask you therefore permission to use your photo in Dr. Steinberg’s book which is meant to benefit other scholars interested in this subject.
We kindly await your reply.
With best regards, Tom Golovner Assistant to Dr. Steinberg
