Question

[edit]

Hello, did you took the Henri Cernuschi picture in Musée Cernuschi ? It looks like the Antonin Carlès sculpture of Cernuschi, like the one kept in Strasbourg. Take a look : http://www.linternaute.com/musee/diaporama/1/7160/musee-alsacien/5/34697/buste-d-henri/

I am writing the article in French about Antonin Carlès, but I want to be sure where this sculpture is. 12 May 2008

Musée Cernuschi

[edit]

Hello, I am PericlesofAthens. I like the pictures you took from the Category:Musée Cernuschi and I would like to use them in Wikipedia articles, but there is one huge problem which stops me from using them: you forgot to date your pictures! There's only a couple of them where you allude to at least the era they were made (such as "Warring Kingdoms" in the title for one bronzeware or another that said "Ming dynasty gilded bronze"). Could you please go back and properly date each item according to the era of Chinese history they were made? Thank you.--PericlesofAthens 16:48, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Remark

[edit]

Hello, after verification on the museum guide, I confirm you that your picture "Musée Nissim de Camondo - Bedroom (son).jpg" is in fact related to the office (even if there is a bed). I corrected the french article on the museum, but I don't know how to modify the title of your image. Lycaonicus, 13 July 2008.

No problem - and thanks for the kind apology. I'm glad that you did all the sleuthing to make sure that they had no copyright problems. Cheers, Daderot (talk) 10:50, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daderot,
are you really sure these statues aren't still copyrighted? There is not FOP for statues in the US and the statues seem to from post 1923.--Túrelio (talk) 22:43, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I am not an attorney, and alas cannot answer your question. I have received quite a few conflicting suggestions about statues in public areas in the US. Sometimes pictures have been removed, and then put back by the same person who removed them (cf Chester A. Beach, two items above this one). I will gladly learn from anyone who is an expert in copyright law in the US, and how it pertains to public statues. Cheers, Daderot (talk) 22:50, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the basics are here. I'm also no expert for the US. I fear, to attract expert input we need to start a rfd, but not today. Good night.--Túrelio (talk) 22:53, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again! I have done a little googling (very little) and discovered this claim on the About.com website: "Now called the Biltmore Sprites, the Sprites of Midway Gardens were in a sense the lost children of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and sculptor Alfonso Iannelli. These geometric architectural statues were conceived in 1914 for the specific purpose of adorning and watching over Midway Gardens, once a center for premier entertainment, fine food and music on Chicago's lakefront." Of course, I cannot vouch for this statement, but if true, the statues date from 1914, and hence were 'published' before 1923. Cheers, Daderot (talk) 22:55, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cleveland Apollo

Photo request: the bixi stele on Harvard campus

[edit]

Hello, and Happy New Year!

I see that you've posted many good pictures from the Boston area, and in particular from the Harvard University campus, e.g. this one: File:Harvard-Yenching_Institute,_Harvard_University_-_statue.jpg. So I would like to ask if you have happened to ever take a picture of the "Chinese stele" located near Widener Library and Boylston Hall on that campus? The stele in question looks like this, and was a gift to Harvard University for its tercentenary anniversary (i.e., 1936) from its alumni in China. As far as I know, this is the only example in North America of a stele supported by a bixi - sort of a dragon-headed tortoise. The statue itself is much older then 1936 (from the Qing Dynasty), so there are no copyright issues. So if you have a photo of that monument in your collection already, or if you plan another photo trip to the Harvard campus some time in the future and don't mind hunting down that creature and taking a new picture of it, I would love to see it uploaded to the Commons and added to the collection at Category:Bixi! Thanks a lot, Vmenkov (talk) 12:16, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Delighted to do it. I've got some kind of photo somewhere, but I'll go retake some photos to show the various details. Then I'll add it to the Bixi category. Thanks for telling me about bixi - quite interesting! Happy new year, Daderot (talk) 20:41, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Incidentally, the Harvard Magazine wrote in 2000 that they university covers this stele (as well as some other sculptures) for the winter to protect the marble from the acid rain... Don't know if that is still the case, but even if it is, the photograph of a covered monument would have a value of its own, too. Vmenkov (talk) 01:18, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, done. I'll try to get some good pictures once it's unwrapped. cheers, Daderot (talk) 22:15, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! The wrapped stele actually makes for a rather interesting picture too; I've added it to the acid rain article. Vmenkov (talk) 11:19, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the new photos in Category:Bixi in Harvard University, too! I just saw them. -- Vmenkov (talk) 11:01, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Eubrontes photo request

[edit]

I am working on a children's book highlighting cool places to visit in Connecticut, and one of those places is Dinosaur State Park. I would like to include the image you posted to the Eubrontes page in Wikipedia (Dinosaur State Park (Rocky Hill, CT) - close-up.JPG) in the book. Please confirm that this is okay with you, and let me know how you would like to be credited on the copyright page. My email address is liz@mightymedia.com. I'll look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

Yes, of course. Please use that image in any way that seems good to you. There are no restrictions on its use, and no requirements for credit. Richmond Avenue Methodist-Episcopal Church (Buffalo)

[edit]

Hi Daderot ... I'm confused by your description on this image. According to the nomination form, this certainly appears to be the building listed on the NRHP as Richmond Avenue Methodist-Episcopal Church. Do you know otherwise? Did you just intend to indicate that it's no longer a church? --Sanfranman59 (talk) 05:35, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sandfranman - I'm sorry to be so confusing! Obviously I've confused myself at least once in this process, so we'll have to take my current note with a grain of salt. At first I had believed that my photograph was of the Richmond Avenue Methodist-Episcopal Church. However, close inspection of various features in the NRHP document (eg, architecture of the tower, location of the tower in relation to the facades) seemed to prove that I was mistaken. Ultimately I concluded that this church was not the NRHP church, located at the Richmond Avenue at Ferry Circle, but rather a different but somewhat similar church, located 5-6 blocks away at the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Bryant Street. Google maps seems to bear this out: check out the street view for "richmond and bryant street, buffalo, ny". So that's what led to this rather confusing note to the image - my apologies! Hope you can help straighten things out. All the best, Daderot (talk) 21:20, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying. Based on the Google Maps street views, I think you're absolutely correct. Your photo is not of the church that's listed on the NRHP. The one by Pubdog on Wikipedia that's included in the Buffalo NRHP list as well as the article about the church itself is the correct photo. Thanks again and keep up the good work on the photos. --Sanfranman59 (talk) 18:47, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

Thanks for uploading so many nice pictures from National Museum, New Delhi, India. I am trying to get some from flickr, but had no luck. Some of your pictures can be valuable additions to Hinduism-related articles on wikipedia. However, it would be easier to identify the subjects of your pictures if you add a short description of the subject as written on the plaque in the picture and categorize it according to the subject like I did in File:Stone sculpt 2 NMND-10.JPG etc. --Redtigerxyz (talk) 05:41, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your kind words! Yes, I do intend to add a short description to each picture - my plan (such as it is) has been to upload a number of photos, then go back and expand the description for each, plus add categories as appropriate. But it will probably take me another week or so.... with all best wishes, and thank you again, Daderot (talk) 13:56, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't blank pages

[edit]

Hi Daderot,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed you blanked Category:Murinan on Commons. If you meant for the page to be deleted, blanking the page is not the right way to do this. Please use {{speedy| type reason here }} and add it on top of the page you would like to have deleted; This way it will be placed on a special list that administrators check regularly for deletion. Without this it might take a long time before it's noticed. For redirects use #REDIRECT[[Target]] or {{category redirect|Targetcategoryname}}. Thanks again. –Krinkletalk 01:53, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! i have wondered how to do that, and very much appreciate your help! Daderot (talk) 01:55, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please release photos of artwork with frames under a license

[edit]

Hi Daderot, I noticed you uploaded some photos such as File:'Wharves of Boston' by Robert Salmon, 1829 - Old State House Museum, Boston, MA - IMG 6794.JPG using the {{PD-Art}} tag. PD-Art is intended for images acquired from other sources like books and websites - photos taken by the uploader should generally be marked either {{PD-old}} if they don't include the frame or with the license of your choice (CC0, CC-BY, etc) if they do include the frame (or other three dimensional elements). Among other things, this will avoid the need to delete versions including the frame. Thanks! Dcoetzee (talk) 01:55, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dcoetzee - I appreciate your note but do not (yet) quite understand what I should do. Personally, I do like to include the frames with old art, so viewers can (a) see the whole picture, and (b) see the distortion in the photo. So... should I be using something like CC0 or CC-BY for these photos? I think that's what you are suggesting, and I would gladly put all works in the public domain. Thank you! Daderot (talk) 02:48, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Daderot - yes please use CC0 for photos including frames. I realise you have many uploads, but when you get the chance, please go back through your old uploads and replace the {{PD-Art}} tag by {{Cc-zero}}, and remove the {{Non-free frame}} tag if I added. This will ensure the version with the frame is not deleted. Thanks! Dcoetzee (talk) 03:33, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Dcoetzee! I continue to be baffled by how intellectual property laws work out in practice, but I will follow your lead. Thanks so much, and all the best, Daderot (talk) 00:30, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Preserved specimens

[edit]

Dear Daderot, I am just categorizing your pictures of preserved specimen to the species categories. Unfortunately for File:Preserved specimens - Kunming Natural History Museum of Zoology - DSC02413.JPG I am not able to read the label - is there any chance for you to handle with the original photo to get a slightly darker version where the label may be read? File:Board of Trade Building, Kansas City, Mo. - LOC 4a13236a.jpg

[edit]

Why did you upload File:Board of Trade Building, Kansas City, Mo. - LOC 4a13236a.jpg claiming that you took the photograph and listing yourself as the author? That is highly inappropriate. Please: BE HONEST. BE ACCURATE. If you have made similar false or mistaken statements in other uploads, please correct them. Thank you much. If you have questions about using Wikimedia Commons you can't find the answer to, ask. -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:32, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I note you placed similar absurd falsehoods in the description of File:Country club, Kansas City, Mo. - LOC 6a07173u.jpg. Astonished, -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:33, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! I am sorry indeed if I have somehow listed myself as a person taking the photograph. I hope I have made it clear that it was taken by the Detroit Publishing Co., c. 1906, and listed in the Library of Congress online database. I believe I have given a pointer to the reference information for these photographs. Although I have no trouble believing that I have made a mistake using the tagging tools, I think you have gone a bit overboard with the "please be honest", "false or mistaken statements", and "absurd falsehoods". Yours, Daderot (talk) 22:41, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Following up a bit, I see that I have listed the author for the second photo you mention as "W. H. Jones", which is what the Library of Congress states, and also that I have tagged both images as "This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1923", which I do believe is correct. Am I really claiming these as my photos? Daderot (talk) 22:44, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see that you have corrected my upload tag, for which I thank you. However, I think you are again going overboard for noting the update as correcting my "insulting lies". Daderot (talk) 22:49, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Pardon if I went overboard. Certainly everyone makes mistakes sometimes. However when someone uploads images with statements that are very far removed from the truth, and then does not fix them, the result can be unsettling. Here is another image of yours I just noticed which you claimed to be the photographer of: File:Public library, Kansas City, Mo. - LOC 4a13244a.jpg I removed the claim. (If I was mistaken in this, and you were actually taking photographs in Kansas City 110 years ago, I beg your pardon and offer my congratulations on your longevity.) If I was correct in my assumption that your statements were false, please replace them with truthful information. If you have uploaded other images with similar cases of misinformation, I encourage you to correct them. If there are questions or assistance I might help with, please feel free to ask. Thank you. -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:01, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Freedom of panorama

[edit]

Hi! I see that you have recently uploaded a few photos from Sŏul. Are you aware of freedom of panorama? Wikipedia Commons only allows pictures of South Korean architecture (buildings, statues and other things) if the architect, sculptor or equivalent died at least 50 years ago. Some of the buildings and sculptures on your photos look recent. --Stefan4 (talk) 00:17, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I do understand the general concept of freedom of panorama, but do not know the rules for South Korea. Of course the relevant national rules must be followed. with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 00:22, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also note that outdoors artwork in Japan isn't allowed unless the architect died at least 50 years ago, but Japanese buildings are allowed. I saw a few Japanese statues among your uploads. Japanese outdoors artwork can, however, sometimes be hosted on Japanese Wikipedia under the okugai bijutsu template, with some restrictions. For example, the number of pixels may not exceed 310,000. There are instructions about this at Wikipedia:Okugai Bijutsu wo Hishatai to Suru Shashin no Riyō Hōshin (only in Japanese). --Stefan4 (talk) 00:37, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good heavens! Remarkably complicated! I would prefer to just do "pure Commons" while trying to stay within all the different national laws. Thank you for your help, and all best wishes for the holidays - Daderot (talk) 01:55, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Do you by chance know what this image is? The source says that it is from 1503, while the original emaki is 13th century. Thanks. Could be also glued papers, but why would they do that in the middle of a painting? Also the very right of that image looks strange to me (like a frame?). Thank you also for the many pictures of Miyajima/Itsukushima Shrine. bamse (talk) 12:25, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Old images of Charlestown

[edit]

Just wanted to let you know: I'm going through old images to populate Category:Charlestown Elevated, including about a half-dozen postcards that you uploaded (possibly from here?). I'm correcting a bit of information on them; you're listed as the author rather than the uploader, etc. I don't want you to think I'm maliciously messing with your uploads or something!

Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 04:30, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As you can see below, I did nominate one for deletion. Again, no offense intended: as it happens, I'd uploaded a larger but identical version from Flickr a few months back. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:26, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note, and many thanks for straightening out my mistake - I'm certainly not the author of those images! I agree with your nomination for deletion, and have said so on the deletion page. Many thanks again, and happy new year to you! Daderot (talk) 09:52, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the seconding, and may your new year be filled with precisely your chosen style of reveling! Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:54, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Misidentified images of Tolpis staticifolia

[edit]

Hi Daderot/Archive 1, your two images File:Tolpis staticifolia - Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg - DSC07677.JPG and File:Tolpis staticifolia - Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg - DSC07678.JPG from the Munich Botanical Garden show mainly Dryas octopetala - the plants with the showy white flowers. A specimen of Tolpis staticifolia can be seen on File:Tolpis staticifolia - Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg - DSC07677.JPG if you enlarge it to full size. Unfortunately it is not very conspicuous, when it is not in bloom. It looks like this: [1]. So I suggest that both of your photographs should be moved to Category:Dryas octopetala, because Tolpis staticifolia is hardly visible. Best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 21:47, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Robert - Thank you! I am not a botanist, and very much appreciate your help. I have changed the categories as you suggest. With all best wishes, Daderot (talk) 23:51, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Daderot/Archive 1, you are welcome. I changed the descriptions of the images accordingly; I forgot to log in first, though. Best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 11:51, 13 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Robert - thank you! I'm very glad to have a knowledgeable person make things right. All best wishes, Daderot (talk) 12:32, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

American Star Bicycle

American Star, 51 inch, HB Smith Machine Company, Smithfield, NJ, 1885

Can you tell me please if the American Star Bicycle you photographed is actually located in Smithville, NJ? Thanks. -AndrewDressel (talk) 15:54, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, it was not located in New Jersey. I took the picture at the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation, Waltham, Massachusetts, where it was part of a temporary exhibit. Best wishes, Daderot (talk) 12:28, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lophotrochozoa (talk) 15:24, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daderot - could I suggest you split this up into about 20 separate pages, to make it more manageable? I wanted to re-link some images I'm renaming (identification), but the page is so huge that it crashed my computer. Thanks! MPF (talk) 11:56, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies for crashing your computer! Yes, I will gladly do that, and am delighted that you are tidying up some images. with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 12:03, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks! - MPF (talk) 12:32, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken a quick pass and broken out some of the older images. This is my first time doing such a thing, and unfortunately I lost the subgallery with the oldest images. Ah well; I do hope those were not ones you wanted to re-link... I'll keep at it, but right now have to go to work. Cheers, Daderot (talk) 12:44, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We, the publisher of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, would like to print your image in a book about the art of brick construction, but we prefer real names for the images credits. Would you agree to send it to us via Wikimail? Best regards --Stiftung Denkmalschutz (talk) 11:15, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I will be very glad to do so. However, I don't know how to use Wikimail. Can you pass me a pointer, or tell me how? Best wishes, Daderot (talk) 11:32, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great, simply mail to shop(at)denkmalschutz.de. Thank you!

The Hiker (both Kitson and Newman) as Spanish-American War memorials

[edit]

You recently added Category:The Hiker (Kitson) and Category:The Hiker (Newman) to Category:Memorials of the Spanish-American War. Per Commons:Categories#For more appropriate categorization I don't think this is right. Those categories are for images of the statues, and although, to my knowledge, all of the installations pictured are Spanish-American War memorials/monuments, I don't think the statues in and of themselves are, nor am I confident that every installation of these statues is as a Spanish-American War memorial. Unless you have information to the contrary, I'm going to remove them from that category. However, I think it would be appropriate for images and/or subcategories of specific installations (e.g. Category:The Hiker (Spanish War Veterans Memorial)) to go into Category:Memorials of the Spanish-American War. Thanks, cmadler (talk) 14:45, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I believe I understand your line of reasoning, and indeed it seems reasonable to me. Thank you for making sure that categories are well organized and tidy. With best wishes, Daderot (talk) 02:26, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Eagle Figure Pendant

[edit]

Hello Daderot. Per Commons:Licensing#Scope of licensing, I was wondering if you could clarify the licensing for your photo of the Diquis Eagle Figure Pendant. You correctly list the object itself as public domain, but since it is a 3D object, you are entitled to separate copyrights over your photography (as there is some degree of creativity involved in photographing 3D objects). If you would like to release your own copyrights to the public domain as well, I would suggest adding a {{PD-self}} or {{Cc0}} template under the {{PD-old}} template and marking what each corresponds to. You can see an example of what I'm talking about here. Hope that makes sense! Kaldari (talk) 21:13, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kaldari! Yes, I will certainly put my photo in the public domain. As might be clear, I am constantly confused about which licenses apply to which kinds of objects, but whenever possible do put my own images in the public domain. Thank you! Daderot (talk) 21:59, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Using one of your pictures in a textbook

[edit]

I would like to include a cropped version (focus is on the hairdo) of your Zeus hurling the lightning bolt in Munich, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zeus_lightning_Glyptothek_Munich_4339.jpg

in an architecture textbook.

Would that be OK with you? Also, would you still want it to be credited to 'Wikimedia:Daderot'? I could add any real name/contact/information you would like to add. Just in case, I can be contacted at thechabon [at] hotmail dot com. --Iiiiaaaa (talk) 15:38, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Iiiiaaaa! First, let me say that I like your name. Second, yes, please go right ahead and use the image in any way that you wish. If you want to give credit, I would be very happy with 'Wikimedia:Daderot'. Thank you and best wishes - Daderot (talk) 22:00, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your participating in voting

[edit]

Dear Daderot,

I can see that you have uploaded some great pictures of the Steinway Alma-Tadema grand piano.[2]

I would kindly ask you if you would like to give your vote in this featured picture voting about a Steinway upright piano "Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Steinway & Sons upright piano, model K-132, manufactured at Steinway's factory in Hamburg, Germany.png" before it ends on 9 May 2012 at 01:58:26 (UTC). The rules says that there has to be at least 7 supporting votes and a ratio of supporting/opposing votes at least 2/1 (a two-thirds majority).[3]

Thanks!

Yours sincerely, --Hereiamfriends (talk) 18:19, 5 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Category discussion warning

Sylvania (brand) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Cleveland African Art

By a curious chance I looked for wiki photos of African art in Cleveland only a couple of days ago.Only to be disappointed. Now I see you are a mindreader as well as a generous (and excellent) photographer. Many thanks indeed 86.148.57.3 21:53, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
