Suggestion for replacement of File:Nitrosodiethylamine3D.png

Hello DMacks, you have nominated File:Nitrosodiethylamine3D.png for deletion today. Although the file is not in use, I would like to upload a correct & high-quality replacement of this chemical structure. To that, I have created a high-quality ball-and-stick model and here is the preview. Could you rate my work? If you don't have any suggestions for improvement, I would upload the file to Commons. Looks fine! DMacks (talk) 21:57, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Re: Licensing confusion

Hi GrahamProjects,

Looking at your uploads of various photographs you took, I see you tagged them with license "cc-by-sa-4.0", which is great. However, the EXIF tags in the files themselves say "CC-BY-NC-ND". The NC and ND restrictions are at odds with the other tag. Did you mean them to be the more-restrictive, or the more-permissive? Do you have any contact with Joyce Scott, in case we have licensing concerns about the underlying creative work itself, apart from your derivative image of it? DMacks (talk) 04:27, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi DMacks, I mean for the photos to be more restrictive. That is out of an abundance of caution with respect to Ms. Scott's work. However that CC option was not offered when I uploaded them. This has been my only foray into Wikimedia Commons. A researcher wanted to use my photos, so I uploaded them at their request. I did a test edit to the license of one photo and I noticed that the text appeared, but it was not visually formatted like the built-in CC options appear. I welcome your recommendations! PS: I know Joyce Scott from when I interviewed her for this article: https://bmoreart.com/2018/09/struggle-and-joy-in-the-druid-hill-park-memorial-pool.html. I can provide contact info for her gallerist for any questions.

Sodium hydroxide molecular structure is ionic (anion + cation) bonding, not covalent bond, please suggest deleting this file or uploading an appropriate new file. And replace the file:Sodium-hydroxide-from-xtal-3D-SF.png better--Hoa112008 (talk) 00:32, 23 June 2020 (UTC)Hoa112008

Yes, that covalent diagram should be deleted. What is the basis for the radii of the atoms in File:Sodium-hydroxide-from-xtal-3D-SF.png? It is also inconsistent to have only some atoms labeled ("Na+" but not anything else). The most useful is probably to have no labels (best direct replacement for the bad image). Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Chemical structure 3D

The Molecular Model images I uploaded, but some files are missing description. So is it considered a poor quality that needs to be removed? Even the chemical structure is still very true. Hoa112008 (talk) 02:14, 28 August 2020 (UTC)Hoa112008

Molecule of salts

Is the salts molecular model anion + cation or is the crystal structure?Hoa112008 (talk) 02:16, 28 August 2020 (UTC)Hoa112008

Depends on the context. Cation+anion is not "correct" but crystal structure is not really useful for most readers. DMacks (talk) 03:16, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

Your opinion to a deletion request + new software for 3D structures

Hello DMacks, I wanted to ask if you could take a look at this deletion request and perhaps add your opinion? Furthermore I want to inform you that I recently gained access to a new professional 3D molecular and crystal structure editor. The software can import millions of structures, mostly from crystallography journals as sources. In this way, the structure can be depicted exactly with real bond angles/lengths. I intend to contribute with this program in the Commons WikiProject Chemistry and I try to improve low-qualtiy 3D models of chemical structures. So if you have a certain case in the future, just let me know. :-) Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 23:03, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

Choosing a video's thumbnnail

Hi, DMacks. At the deletion page of this file, you mentioned we can choose thumbnnail when using it (like in this case). Can you please show me how to do it?
Acagastya (talk) 15:32, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

We actually can't choose the thumbnail at this time...the phab ticket is the feature-request for that (and to which I added this case as a new reason that this feature would be useful). Other file formats and/or platforms do have that capability. Interestingly, when one places the video in a Wiki article, one can choose any other frame of it to be displayed as thumb there. The problem is the default, and that the default is the only one that displays on the file's own page on commons. DMacks (talk) 18:48, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
No, I meant, how to control thumbnail when using it for an article -- turns out, it is `thumbtime=`.

Glad you found that feature! DMacks (talk) 15:44, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!

Dear DMacks

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Restoring copyrighted file for Wikipedia fair use

Hello again! Can you please look into restoring the deleted file Runciethumb.jpg temporarily so that it may be transferred/used on the English Wikipedia (for the article Robert Runcie) under the terms of fair use? Many thanks, Neveselbert (talk) 16:49, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

All set. Please be careful with the tagging. The file here says PD and own-work, but it was deleted for those details being dubious. I'm not sure how strictly enwiki Fair Use will require listing an actual source rather than just "unknown". DMacks (talk) 16:56, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Thank you. Would you mind please to transfer the image to Wikipedia, as you had done previously with File:Emmanuel Issoze-Ngondet.jpg? Neveselbert (talk) 17:01, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
I can't take ownership of the transfer because I don't have that source info. Can you google around and find it (or even a higher-quality version of it)? The higher the quality (or at least a reputable publication even if nonfree) the better in terms of provenance and closeness to the original. Once it's on enwiki, we can knock the resolution/size down. DMacks (talk) 17:05, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
I see. I tried to reverse image search for the image and unfortunately, I can't seem to find a single reputable source for it. Most of the matches appear to be from mirrors of Wikipedia, while the others appear to have been published from user-generated sources. I tried googling the name of the image's subject in a normal Google Images search, but still, I haven't been able to come across another version or copy of this photograph. Personally, I still don't think this is an original work owing to the poor resolution, but it's possible that this could be an original derivative work of the photograph. Maximet, the uploader of the file, has only ever contributed to Commons by uploading this file nearly twelve years ago, therefore I think it's unlikely we would be able to ask them to clarify the situation for us. Neveselbert (talk) 17:24, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
DMacks, would it not be OK to simply state the source info as a derivative work of unascertained origin? I've tried but I still can't find the photograph anywhere else on the web that doesn't lead me straight back to the file in question. Neveselbert (talk) 20:06, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
I have no idea whether that's sufficient "source" to meet en:WP:NFCC#10a or not. That might be a good general question for en:Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. DMacks (talk) 22:40, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

Do you think that this publication (page 2) would suffice, as a sufficient source? Their version of the image is not the retouched, colour-balanced version of the file uploaded to Commons. Neveselbert (talk) 16:31, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Would it be alright if I added the above as the source? Neveselbert (talk) 18:13, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
Good find! Make sure you don't cite that as the source/actual file itself (not sure how to word the provenance to avoid making it seem like you did the retouching). But that does solve the problem of verifying that at least it's an image of the correct person. DMacks (talk) 18:59, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
Would File:Runciethumb.jpg#Summary be OK for transfer? Neveselbert (talk) 19:37, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
Sure! The Import tool can probably do it with preservation of all history if you know how to use that (Rather than download/upload/etc). DMacks (talk) 19:13, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
Would you be able to? I don't think I have the user rights. Neveselbert (talk) 20:10, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
Sure. Working on it... DMacks (talk) 15:14, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
✓ Done Thanks for your patience. DMacks (talk) 13:45, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

Phenylsodium

Hello, DMacks. What is the molecular model of Phenylsodium is an ionic bonding or covalent? Hoa112008 (talk) 01:32, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Hoa112008

I cannot find specific data about this chemical in isolation. But there is lots of evidence that sodium vs lithium or magnesium-halide has a structural effect, so be sure not to make any assumptions. DMacks (talk) 04:42, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC

Hello DMacks,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

New editor?

Hi DMacks,

Hope you're well.

I've just noticed User:Cyclone in the world, who has been adding chemistry images to Category:3D models. It looks like Cyclone's first edit was the day after User:Hoa112008 was blocked, based on user contributions for both accounts. They both edit obscure molecules like File:Thiozone-3D-balls.png, File:Gallole-3D-sticks.png and File:Tetranitromethane-3D-vdW.png, along with some satellite photos of storms. I haven't checked all Cyclone's images, but I did spot File:Hemoglobin-3D-sticks.png is in use on the Vietnamese Wikipedia, consistent with Hoa's editing. Worth investigating for block evasion? --Ben (talk) 19:36, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi Ben, doing well, nice to see you upgrade so many enwiki with crystal structures. Good catch for this sock! I blocked them here and on enwiki. There are definitely multiple ways they match. I will look into some other measures that could be taken. You're also welcome to email me if you don't want to tip your hand about the specific bits of evidence you notice. DMacks (talk) 03:48, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Very good point, didn't think of that! Will be stealthier next time (I'm sure there will be one). Good to be back working with the A-team that is WP:CHEM. If you have any articles you think could do with a structure, or just stuff like referencing on enwiki or categories here, happy to help. Impressed with the tight ship you're running here on Commons. --Ben (talk) 19:40, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi User:BigCrocOnTheBlock. I don't quite understand all the details here , but "all rights reserved" means you cannot redistribute it at all. It's the opposite of any sort of free license. Unless you took the photograph with your own camera of the actual people live, or have a contract with the actual photographer (or film studio or whatever) with appropriate terms, you do not own the copyright. Are you claiming that you took this picture yourself? DMacks (talk) 04:32, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

It's not my own work. I'm trying to do all I can to get a picture of this actor I need some help. This is what Flickr says:

All Rights Reserved

You, the copyright holder, reserve all rights provided by copyright law, such as the right to make copies, distribute your work, perform your work, license, or otherwise exploit your work; no rights are waived under this license.

I thought since its a public domain image I can still use it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BigCrocOnTheBlock (talk • contribs) 04:41, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Now I'm even more confused. You say it's not your own work. So where is the statement that the photographer whose work it is has released it into public domain? It's a common mis-conception that things one "finds on the internet" are free for arbitrary reuese. Only the copyright holder (original photographer) can make that declaration. Unless that is you, you can do pretty much nothing except look at it, and definitely you cannot legally declare that others can do things with it. DMacks (talk) 04:47, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello DMacks, two and a half years ago, I have nominated File:Strukturformel von 3-Hydroxybutanal.svg for deletion (→ see Commons:Deletion requests/File:Strukturformel von 3-Hydroxybutanal.svg), because I had replaced the file with a newer version (File:Structural formula of 3-hydroxybutanal.svg). Back then I was very unexperienced with deletion requests and my argumentation was invalid in this case. As this is one of my oldest structures, it contains some SVG errors and the drawing format is not according to MoS. Generally I create both structures for the German Wikipedia (there we have some special guidelines about bond length etc.) and according to official Manual of Style guidelines. File:Strukturformel von 3-Hydroxybutanal.svg was neither drawn to German Wikipedia guidelines, nor MoS for e.g. English Wikipedia. For this reason, I have uploaded File:3-Hydroxybutanal-2D-structure.svg to replace that file. Would you agree if I reopen the deletion request, but this time for SVG errors & structural problems? --Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 07:51, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

"SVG errors", with a replacement that does not have SVG errors, is itself a valid reason to delete. If the replacement(s) are also fairly similar-looking but technically meeting current MOS, that's even better. Feel free to re-nominate. DMacks (talk) 12:26, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your support. I have now re-opened the deletion request. Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 16:12, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

✓ Done DMacks (talk) 04:48, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi DMacks, I want to create a shortcut for uploading files to upload my chemistry files faster. How can I create my own template like you did in Upload a chemical structure at User:DMacks/Upload-Chem-Structure. For instance I want to edit the section "description" and add further details. — Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 20:46, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

The template is URL-encoded and some details also need protection from the the wiki parser. It is painful to craft it because it needs to be formatted to go directly to the upload API, so it can't easily load a premade other template file as far as I know. You're welome to clone mine (I cloned it from someone else:) and I can help try to get it to do what you want. DMacks (talk) 04:18, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer and explanation. I was already assuming that it could be difficult to create such a template. For me I think it's better to create a template as text file on my computer ;-). But thanks anyway for your help. — Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 13:11, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
You must have cloned it from Commons:Upload/Chemistry (created by Matthias M.). --Leyo 20:35, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
Yup. Cited in mine's history. Someone who is clever with JS could probably whip up a tool to encode a template and pass it to the wpUploadDescription parameter. But I don't fully understand the encoding. DMacks (talk) 03:40, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

hi DMacks i have added the naught tomatoes and another photo from the flicker that was of free to use . but i don't know why you have said it as a copyright violation . If it is really a violation guide me to upload a correct image to encyclopedia and what should i do to the voilated images. I am a new editor , please guide me — Preceding unsigned comment added by KSV9 (talk • contribs) 06:24, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi KSV9. Welcome to Wikipedia and Commons! I think that it is fundamentally not possible to place those images on commons, no matter where you get them. COM:PACKAGING explains it. Basically, the company owns the rights to the package art, so they would have to explicitly make a free release before it could be uploaded here.
Technical details 1: When you take a picture of it with your camera, you are creating a "derivative work", for which the company still controls the license (you can't decide that it is "free" without their permission). And if you find a picture that someone else has taken and said you can use freely, they have violated that license.
Technical details 2: There is a fundamental problem with flicker and other file-sharing sites that people knowingly or unknowingly violate licenses when they upload there, and then others usually-unknowingly violate the license further by downloading and reusing those files. Commons:License laundering discusses this aspect of it.

Vandalism Warning

Hello - I believe you posted a "vandalism warning" on my user talk page at Wikimedia Commons. I certainly had no intention of vandalizing any content, and, in fact, I was not aware that I had made or attempted to make any edits to that page. If anything was done it was completely unintentional. I may have visited in this page in course of trying to figure out how to get permission to post this photo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Appling_B%26W_Headshot.jpg on the article I have created for the late musician William Appling: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Appling This is the first Wikipedia article I've created and have been working with the Wiki editor Cullen328 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Cullen328) I am hoping to add several photographs to the William Appling article and have been trying to learn how to do this. I have been assigned the copyright to the photograph I am hoping to post, and earlier today I sent an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org asking for help on how to list the Source and Author correctly and make sure everything was in order to post the photograph. I attached a copy of the copyright assignment that I have received from the photographer who took the original photo. I received an automated response to my email confirming receipt of my email with the Ticket #2021092610004221 I am waiting to hear back so that I can make any necessary corrections to the file so it can be posted. I am also working to correct the problems with https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joplin_Program_Cover_Hi-Res.jpg I am a member of the organization which owns the copyright to this image, which is the cover of a CD recorded by William Appling. I have been authorized by the organization to post the cover on William Appling's Wikipedia article. Whatever help you can offer to make sure I am doing everything is done correctly would be appreciated. As I said, this is the first Wikipedia article I have done and the first time uploading and posting images. I apologize for any inadvertent editing I may have done on Wikipedia Commons. Again, anything done was completely unintentional. Scribia4178 (talk) 23:13, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

No worries. For some reason, that specific image gets vandalized (not just "accidentally") often. I am not authorized to handle the OTRS/VTR queue, so we're all stuck waiting for those agents to get to it. Fortunately, anything that does get deleted while waiting is easy to undelete once those agents tell us to do so. That doesn't make it less frustrating while waiting though. DMacks (talk) 15:59, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your response. I'm relieved to know I'm not a "WikiVandal"! (I still have no idea what I accidentally did, but I'll try not to do it again.) I believe I have resolved the copyright questions and I now have permission to post the photo on our article. Regards, Scribia4178 (talk) 16:40, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

Uploads by user Bozena.Krkoska

Hello DMacks,

Thank you for speedy deleting that obvious copyvio image uploaded by this user. I just discovered that he apparently uploaded a whole bunch of pictures, and I am not sure how to proceed with those. The one that just got deleted was an obvious case, as it was an image of himself, and the photographer obviously had the rights to that.

Now in the case of these other pictures, these apparently are pieces of art created by him, so assuming this is the artist himself uploading the pictures, he would have the rights to these pieces of art. However, the images are marked just like the first one: "Copyright (c)2011 Oki Data Corporation. All rights reserved."

It seems quite clear that these are not CC licensed images. However, one might argue that these are simply depictions of artwork with no relevant threshold of originality.

Is there some way to find out without having to start a deletion debate on every single one of them? Thanks, --91.34.36.137 15:58, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

P.S. Just found another obvious one (another portrait).

Hello DMacks.

This night you deleted the abovementioned file 4-5 days before the 7-day deadline set in the initial {{No permission since tag, set by NoFrost whom I recently informed about the actions already taken to provide the proper licensing with the perspective of its transfer into ru-wiki section.

As I remember, I did not fill the license section with any templates. Thus I don't understand upon what legal grounds you filled the motivaton comment into deletions' log ("Uploader says it's "fair use"). Restoring this file may be helpful to clarify, what was really written there. Thanks in advance, — Cherurbino (talk) 07:59, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

I undeleted it. I agree that there is no "fair use" tag. But looking at the source website, http://en.roscosmos.ru/20744/ has terms that are not fully open and Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Russia does not appear to make a blanket open-license statement for all state publications. By my analysis, the content is therefore non-free and could be speedy-deleted as {{Copyvio}}. The deletion widget automatically fills in the manually-written note from the page, which was User:MBH's comment about fair-use in addition to the simple statement of being a copyright violation. I can't read Russian, so maybe you can find some clear statement somewhere that this content is actually free enough to commons to host it? DMacks (talk) 08:19, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi colleague, as per this complaint User_talk:Túrelio#File:Incisione-del-1854-1855-di-luigi-litta-raffigurante-la-collegiata-nuova-di-san-vittore-terminata-ma-senza-cupola-con-di-fronte-il-campanile-quattrocentesco.jpg, I think the file might be restored and put under PD-old/PD-Art. Ok for you? --Túrelio (talk) 20:02, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

VRTS permission for Carla's Dreams files

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

How to restore upload?

Hi! I uploaded it to Commons to illustrate a file I posted on Wikipedia, but I think I used the codes incorrectly as it was dropped by "fair use". But I tried to put the code for restricted use license on Wikipedia Lusófona in portuguese. How can I fix this without incurring some sort of violation? Thank you. Cristalima (talk) 22:16, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi Cristalima!
I see you had uploaded File:Gaín Pañan e a origem da pupunheira.jpg, which was a poster for a film. The license for film posters is usually owned by the media company that produced them. Or, in the case of independent films, they might be owned by the director or other principal of the film. That means whoever owns it has nearly complete control over where and how it can be used. "Fair use" is the case where even a protected image can be used without the owner's permission—Commons:Fair use has lots of info. But only some languages' wiki sites allow fair-use content, and commons does not. If you can get the owner to confirm that they wish to make the poster "free" (which has some technical meanings), then it can be on commons. If you are planning to use it on Portuguese Wikipedia, I think pt:Wikipédia:Conteúdo restrito says that it is allowed, but you have to upload it to that site directly and follow some specific rules there. It is true that the files tagged in this DR need to be deleted: Commons:Deletion requests/ Anonymous paintings of Pope Pius XII uploaded by Kurnughy77 because there isn't evidence that they have 70 years since publication for European PD, and they are dated as "XX secolo" (20th century), without a more precise datation. 176.83.47.129 23:48, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

File deletion

Hello DMacks, I am not clear why this was deleted, especially regarding the argument that anything deemed not short is automatically copyrighted. I am not aware of any such law per se. The basis of my original inclusion is that neither the text nor the screenshot is a piece of creative work. Mere facts cannot be copyrighted, therefore not everything should be assumed to fall under copyright. I also inquired about what the exact burden of proof would be for retaining the contribution but was not given any clear instruction. After a prolonged period of no response, I assumed the issue no longer needed to be addressed, but to my surprise the opposite has ended up happening now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, GeorgiaDC (talk) 14:14, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi GeorgiaDC. Text is generally considered creative work. It's definitely true that facts aren't copyrightble. But the specific writing of the facts (the prose itself) usually is. That's why one can write about an event using information in a newspaper article (and include a cite to the article as the reference), but cannot scan and upload the newspaper page. As User:King of Hearts said several times: "prove that it is public domain or freely licensed".

So let's figure this out. The image is a screenshot of an instant message or social media post, composed of text and a profile-photograph. Did you write the original text? Did you take the original photo used in the profile picture? DMacks (talk) 14:25, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

No, the entire screenshot was sent to my friends group on social media at the time, probably after being forwarded multiple times. I can blur out the profile picture if that helps. The text itself was addressed from Peng to Zhang using "I"s and "you"s as pronouns, for example. GeorgiaDC (talk) 15:16, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
Under PRC law, "creative work" generally means some kind of intellectual achievement; see translation here. Was the message posted an intellectual achievement? GeorgiaDC (talk) 21:53, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
Expressive written prose is nearly universally considered a creative work. DMacks (talk) 02:00, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.
