Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:45, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Trains & train interiors
[edit]Hi. Can you please not add cats such as "British Rail Class 313" to cats such as "Trains of London Overground" - not all 313s are LO, and there's a subcat for 313s of LO, which is already a subcat of Trains of LO. Understand that such train categorisation is an ongoing job because there are a lot of train photos on Commons, but we're doing our best to have a consistent system. Admittedly it can create redundant categories, when one train class has only ever operated by a single company, but in general it creates a comprehensive and clear category scheme. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:07, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry, I was tidying up an over-populated category and these were actually in the top-level London Overground category, which is over-populated. I moved them down a level but I see there is a more precise category already there, and I should simply have removed them. Sorry about that. All sorted now? Cnbrb (talk) 12:27, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, no worries. I moved a load of 378s out of the top cat for you while I was at it. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:41, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi,
This is a great map. I noticed that the section of track within the channel tunnel (between Folkestone and Calais, where the speed is limited to 160 km/h) is marked red. Is this just a schematic, or would you be willing to change the colour of the line where it passes under the channel to indicate that the line is not technically a high-speed rail line within the tunnel? Rnt20 (talk) 18:05, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes, good point. It's done. Cnbrb (talk) 10:29, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
- Also this is a map of high speed rail in the UK. Northern Ireland should be included as it is a constituent part of the UK. Iainturnerisgod (talk) 12:34, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
- I agree & understand about NI and am happy tp shade in NI appropriately. However, railway articles tend to treat Great Britain and Ireland separately for historical reasons - see the Rail transport in the United Kingdom article. I wonder if the article should really be about GB only to be consistent with the other rail articles. That's all - no political commentary intended! (I wouldn't dare! :-) ) Cnbrb (talk) 13:03, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm yeah. This map here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WCML_ECML_Midlands.png shows the whole UK and other maps show just GB when presenting info about railways. I think that either the article needs to be moved to 'High speed rail in Great Britain' or Northern Ireland needs to be added to the map. I also dont know whether the scottish plans announced this week for a high speed link between Glasgow and Edinburgh are at an advanced enough stage to add that route to the map? probably not just yet I would think. Iainturnerisgod (talk) 22:41, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
- Doubt it - it's all very vague right now! Cnbrb (talk) 01:21, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

London Midland livery
[edit]Hi. Images like File:Watford Junction railway station MMB 15 321415.jpg do not show London Midland livery. It's a London Midland train, but Silverlink livery. -mattbuck (Talk) 16:16, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Transport Maps
[edit]Hi there. I'm a huge admirer of the maps that you have created using OpenStreetMap such as File:Bromley north line connections.png and I was wondering how you do them. Do you use an external programme and if so, what? How do you get the background image from OSM? They realy are fantastic and I would love to be able to do it myself. Thanks. 07bargem (talk) 16:24, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
- Oh thank you! They're Photoshop jobs - bits drawn in layers over the top. The background image is just a screengrab of the OSM (or several pasted together). I found it effective to desaturate the background and raise the brightness so the top level illustration would stand out.Cnbrb (talk) 12:31, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Nickey Line
[edit]From the map of the Nickey Line between Harpenden and Hemel Hempstead please delete "Duckhall Gasworks Halt". Despite extensive research I have been unable to find a station with that name. The section of line between Hemel Hempstead and Heath Park Halt never carried a passenger service so there was no requirement for a station.!!! Steamybrian2 (talk) 20:47, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- OK, I have taken out the halt, but retained the gasworks label for clarity. Hope this is better. Cnbrb (talk) 13:22, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Passenger ferries in Scotland map
[edit]There are a few issues with this map. Firstly Stranraer is not in Northern Ireland and no longer has a ferry service. The map is missing out all the inter island routes of Shetland and Orkney . Thirdly I think that the showing just one discontinued route is misleading as there are many routes that have existed in the past e.g to Norway.--FDent (talk) 16:34, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hi - thank you - what a stupid mistake, thank you for pointing that out! Whilst moving labels around to replace Stranraer with Cairnyan, I obviously moved Stranraer across the sea instead of labelling it Belfast. As for Shetland & Orkney, can you point me in the right direction - are they Northlink or independent operators? I'll do my best to include them. Cheers Cnbrb (talk) 13:36, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Cnbrb. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Cnbrb~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell

Helpme
- Hello Keegan
- This doesn't really make sense. I hold two logins for English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, both named Cnbrb - they are both me. The stated aim in the announcement is that "users must have the same account name everywhere", which is fine, as I already have the same account name, except now you are going to force me to have two account names instead! Have you really thought this through?? Wouldn't it be more sensible simply to merge my two accounts? Renaming Wikimedia accounts is going to cause all sorts of problems - not least how you retrospectively reassign irrevocable CC licences to my new name. Cnbrb (talk) 19:48, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
P.S. I have just found Special:MergeAccount and entered my password but it does not work. It will not let me merge my accounts.- P.S. I looked at Special:MergeAccount and it states that "The accounts named "Cnbrb" on each of the following sites have been automatically attached to the unified account:
- commons.wikimedia.org
- en.wikipedia.org
- www.mediawiki.org"
- So why must my account be renamed if they have been renamed? Can anyone please explain this bizarre move? Cnbrb (talk) 13:43, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
Helpme Hello? It's been almost a week now. Can someone please advise on the above issue about the unwanted change to my account name. Cnbrb (talk) 14:34, 24 March 2015 (UTC) Hello? Hello? Hello? Is anyone there? 10:41, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
- HELLO? Can you please do me the courtesy of replying Keegan? I want an explanation.Cnbrb (talk) 00:40, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
- Another week goes by and still no reply. Cnbrb (talk) 17:02, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello Cnbrb,
- the problem was that you had separate accounts here, at en.wp and elsewhere that were not attached to another. By visiting Special:MergeAccount you automatically created a new unified account for yourself, merging the separate accounts. See [1], the unified account was created on March 16, your commons and mediawiki accounts were attached on March 18. Since then new account were created automatically for other sites of the Wikimedia Foundation, this is done automatically each time you visit such a site while logged in to your unified account.
- The whole point of the renaming effort was to rename non-attached accounts to make room for unified accounts. Since you now have a unified account, renaming is no longer necessary, and your account was not renamed several days ago when the big renaming project was executed. All is good. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 09:38, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

H2_phase_2.png - Leeds New Lane modification required
[edit]Hi. On 30 November 2015 the government published their latest review on phase two of HS2. One of the changes they have decided on is for HS2 platforms to be built onto the existing Leeds railway station. Therefore the separate Leeds New Lane station will not be built. The document is here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/480396/Higgins_-_The_Yorkshire_Hub.pdf
I have already updated the pages 'Leeds New Lane railway station' and 'Leeds railway station'. I am now in the process of updating the 'High Speed 2' page. There is one modification that I would like your help with if that's ok. The page includes the figure 'H2 phase 2.png' which you created. Would you be able to modify this figure by deleting the 'New Lane' part so that it just says 'Leeds'. The map will then be up to date. Thanks. --Gruffyddd (talk) 14:34, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Move for File:Oxford Circus tube station CLR emblem.jpg
[edit]Hi, I have requested File:Oxford Circus tube station CLR emblem.jpg be moved to File:Oxford Circus tube station J Leon & co emblem.jpg. The emblem shown is not that of the Central London Railway, but of J Leon & Co. a newsagent that once occupied a kiosk in the corner of the building. The emblem and another on the other side of the corner are on the top of what were once external display cases for the kiosk. They are not part of the building structure and were not part of the building when it was constructed (links to images below). The kiosk space is now occupied by a cash machine.DavidCane (talk) 12:39, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Please read the license before nominating a file for deletion. Thanks, Yann (talk) 14:32, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, please look at the source before un-nominating a file for deletion. This image is quite clearly on sale by Getty images for £340 under a rights-managed licence. This is not free content. The painting may be 169 years old but the JPEG version is in this case non-free content and does not belong on commons. Thanks for taking the time to read these links. Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2019!
[edit]Hi
Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.
Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).
We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.
The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.
Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.
Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

- You've had my 25 minutes. That was 25 minutes of my life I will never get back again. What a meaningless survey. What were you guys thinking?? Cnbrb (talk) 20:29, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
How did you make this map?
[edit]I saw this map. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HS2_phase_1.png
Its really useful, and i needed to make something similar. How did you generate it?
I saw you mention openStreetMap but i couldn't see how on there it was made (maybe another tool).
Jayflux (talk) 12:35, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks! I took a screenshot of an area of OpenStreetMap, and then in Photoshop I overlaid an official HS2 map, traced the HS2 route with a vector pen tool and then applied a coloured stroke to each of the routes. Then applied the labels and desaturated the background map graphic to help the coloured lines to stand out. Cnbrb (talk) 12:40, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
Which layer did you use on OpenStreetMap? It looks different to the layers available today. Jayflux (talk) 13:03, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
- I think the layers colours have changed a bit since this map was created, but it looks like the Humanitarian layer. Cnbrb (talk) 13:07, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Warning
[edit]Hi Cnbrb. I noticed that you've made a malformed deletion request. When you want to delete a file with the Delete template, you must follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion, or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually. Alternatively, you can click the "Nominate for deletion" link in the left sidebar, under the "tools" section, which does all of the work for you. Please do one of these, otherwise you create a lot of work for other people. If you don't see the "Nominate for deletion" link in the left sidebar, you can use the JavaScript method of enabling AjaxQuickDelete on Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets once and then refresh once. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 06:00, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
- "Warning"? How about "Thanks for submitting a deletion request"? What sort of way is that to communicate with people? As for the "malformed" request, I followed the instructions on the template and copied and pasted the information I was given. If that's not correct, then the instructions are not clear. Everything on Wikimedia is mired in arcane rules and complex bureaucratic procedures - it's no wonder people don't contribute any more. Everything on this site "creates a lot of work for other people". Go and send a "warning" to whoever designed this tortuous system. Cnbrb (talk) 09:10, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for submitting deletion requests. For this one, you did not create the subpage, transclude it, or link to it. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 11:57, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

[edit]Copyright status: File:Marie Louise Gardens Geograph-2624291-by-David-Dixon 02.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Marie Louise Gardens Geograph-2624291-by-David-Dixon 02.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File:In the bleak midwinter (Harold Darke).ogg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

We need your feedback!
[edit]Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!
I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.
We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.
Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Filemover!
[edit]
Hi Cnbrb, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Mexico City airport system
[edit]Hello,
There are 3 airports serving Mexico City since one year ago (two are actually in the suburbs). Something similar to the London airports map would be nice. The Metro does not reach two of them, but rather connects with buses. Long distance buses to many points in the city are quicker and allow avoiding crowds but are much more expensive. Two train lines are being extended, and there is a plan to extend Line 4 of the Mexibús (after some roads are built). The info is split between Spanish and English articles. Thanks. Thames Clippers has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

[edit]Hi. Can you update File:HS2_phase_2_Manchester.png so the legend matches the drawn lines. "Phase 2a" should be teal to match the segment between Crewe and Birmingham. Thanks. Jigen III (talk) 16:02, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

William Henry Draper
[edit]Hello @Cnbrb Where did you find the photo of William Henry Draper, the hymn writer? I think you have the wrong man. See very good image of him on NPG website: https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw164873/William-Henry-Draper?LinkID=mp104105&role=sit&rNo=0 It would be sad for both gentlemen if the error persisted. Raisins of the Sun (talk) 12:00, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Raisins of the Sun: - thanks for querying that - interesting question! As you'll see from the licensing info, I sourced File:William Henry Draper (hymnwriter).jpg from Discogs. There are in fact several Williams of the same name, and it possible that Discogs simply used the wrong one. This Getty image] bears a striking resmblance to the one I uploaded, as as he is listed under "notable New Yorkers", I suspect he may be a younger version of William Henry Draper (congressman). It's hard to be sure, but I would say that the National Portrait Gallery is like to be a much more reliable source than Discogs, and it looks like they do have an identifiable image of the hymnwriter.
