Social networking sites
[edit]Hello, I have noticed that you have created a new Map of social networks in svg, based on my older image Social networks.jpg. However, I see that you have wrong Belarus, Uzbekistan and Moldova. Look here: http://vincos.it/world-map-of-social-networks/. Also, the colour of VKontakte was much better than here, it is very badly for people with bad color seeing. Now it is almost indiscernible from Japans Twitter, brown was better.
- Hi Jirka, yes, I like to convert JPG/PNG maps to SVG when it's not too big of a job, and colouring countries on a world map is quite easy in SVG.
- It was pure coincidence that I did it today, i.e. the day you just uploaded your updated map (good on you for that, sadly not everyone update their maps). So first of all, if you have the feeling that your work is not appreciated because I just replaced your fresh map, be assured that's absolutely not the case. I appreciate that you drew the map regardless of whether it's technically perfect or not (every map is better than none) and I appreciate your critical feedback.
- So let me explain. I didn't directly copy your map into SVG and I didn't use the map from vincos.it as my source either. I went directly to where they probably get their data from, too: the page ranking site Alexa's list of The top 500 sites in each country or territory. On that page I clicked on every country listed (they are 118... it took me some time ;)) and looked which social network is the first in the list. Their current information is:
- In Moldova Facebook is 3rd, Ok.ru 4th (behind Google and YouTube)
- In Uzbekistan it's almost the same -- Facebook is 3rd, Ok.ru 4th (behind Google and Mail.ru)
- In Belarus vk.com is 1st place
- So that's why I colour-coded the countries the way they are. My guess to explain the difference is that between August (when vincos.it updated their map) and now the order simply changed.
- Regarding the colours, I chose them based on what colours the networks use for their site/logo/etc. You're right, the blues of Facebook, Twitter and VK are very close and when choosing the colours I thought about that -- I found it to be OK, but maybe you're right. If you want, it's absolutely no problem at all to change the colour -- that's one of the nice things about SVG :)
- Thanks again for your feedback! -- Christallkeks (talk) 22:00, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hello Christallkeks, what tool are you use for SVG? As you stated that it is more easy? As for the countries, I think that difference is not made because of time that passed, but because Vincos blog counts monthly active users, and your data are for the most visited sites. In that case, more accurate is Vincos map and should be in use. And yes, I would appreciate if you will colour VK back to browm - as it is really hard to recognize blues differences. Thanks for the reply. Jirka.h23 (talk) 10:41, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
- In SVG, the content is described by a source code that is then rendered. For this one, I took this blank map of the world (File:BlankMap-World6.svg) which has IDs for every country in its source code. So I just had to add to the source code that USA should be coloured blue, China red etc. For this I used a normal text editor (I use PSPad which is really nice (it's from a Czech guy actually)). For "general" SVG drawing, you can use Inkscape which is open source. But colouring countries is a lot easier and nicer when done right in the source code. If you want to understand how it works, it's probably best to download the SVG, open it in a text editor and have a look at it.
- I don't think Vincos blog uses different data from what I used. He writes right in the first sentence "according to Alexa traffic data" and a label under the map reads "Source: Alexa". So I think the difference must be due to time passed. Therefore I'd still use "my" data as it is most likely more up-to-date.
- As you requested I changed VK's colour to a brown tone, so it should be easier to see now. (For some reason not all thumbnails were updated yet, which is a Wikimedia Commons server bug being fixed, but in the articles the new version can already be seen). -- Christallkeks (talk) 22:32, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
- Look again at Vinco's site, right under the picture he explains that he counts active users. Your data are only the most visited sites. Jirka.h23 (talk) 09:42, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Ukraine in File:BlankMap-World8.svg
[edit]Hi Christoph, I notice that you were the last person to edit BlankMap-World8 to fix a CSS issue with Sudan and South Sudan. I have been trying to use this as a base for some choropleths but I cannot get Ukraine to render at all. I was hoping you might have some idea what the problem is, as nothing leaps out at me from the source code! Any help gratefully appreciated. Dan Hetherington (talk) 19:49, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
- Hi @Dan Hetherington: It was the same mistake that happened when User:Master Uegly seperated South Sudan from Sudan: He just used Inkscape to edit the file, causing the styling to be hard coded in the actual element instead of via CSS classes.* I fixed that: You can now use the classes and ids "ua" and "crimea" to colour those territories. I didn't add crimea to either the "ua" or "ru" classes as I'm pretty sure people have different opinions on that... -- Christallkeks (talk) 11:20, 5 February 2017 (UTC) *more detailed: search for "ua" in the old file and look at that path element. It has a style attribute with hard coded styling rules - no other path element has that. Instead, the others have the class "land" that causes them to be grey when nothing else is specified plus the two letter code (e.g. "de" for Germany) for the individual colouring. Ukraine was missing these classes.
- Thanks so much! Not just for the fix but for the explanation -- seems like a common problem that I will doubtless run into again. Dan Hetherington (talk) 15:52, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- No worries :) It happens when people use WYSIWYG editors without realising that there's "a bit more going on under the hood". (No offence Master Uegly in case you're reading this, thanks for plunging forward in the first place!) I hope you won't be troubled by that more often. If you do: let me know, I'm happy to help. -- Christallkeks (talk) 17:22, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Einladung zum Mitmachen bei Wiki Loves Monuments 2017
[edit]Wiki Loves Monuments 2019
