Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:30, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Comment
[edit]I'll ask Admin Eugene Zelenko to comment here as he speaks Russian. The problem is Commons Cannot accept images at upload with "Non-Commercial" (NC) or "No-Derivative" (ND) use restrictions on their licenses. That is why I passed this image below..which has no NC or ND restriction here by you:
- File:R-9.JPG and this image:
- File:Chapelle Saint Jean - crucifix.jpg by user Edeleiser which has no such restriction on its license here
I cannot explain it anymore. except to say that this license is not free enough for Commons because of the ND restriction. Only Admin Zelenko can suggest how the license on panoramio may be changed. I am on flickr, not panoramio. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 18:46, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Creative Commons. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:50, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
You should get an E-mail permission from your friend (with his or her E-mail address attached) and have you friend state that he/she allows you 1. to upload images from the geograph account to WikiCommons and 2. how he wishes to license the pictures--whether its 'CC BY SA GENERIC 3.0' or CC BY GENERIC 3.0' or GFDL. The permission statement would have to be sent to 'permissions-commons@wikimedia.org' and a link attached to the Commons picture you uploaded. Once an image is on Wikicommons, it can be used by other websites too, not just be wikipedia--it could be facebook, etc--since its copyright free. Your friend must also identify his geograph account in his E-mail statement.
Personally, you should ask the same question you asked me to the Commons Admin and OTRS volunteer MGA73 here first on his talkpage. He knows the exact words to say--and what license to choose. I am not an Admin or an OTRS volunteer. He has more experience here, I'm afraid. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:45, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- Saw your post on Leoboudv's talk page and thought I should comment. All geograph.co.uk and geograph.ie images are licenced under a free Creative Commons Attrbitution licence, like one mentioned above, per http://www.geograph.org.uk/faq3.php?a=68#68 so no new permission would be necessary? Many geograph images have already been uploaded to the commons. Ww2censor (talk) 15:17, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- Wow, these web-pages are really marvellous! But I'm mostly working in the geography of Ukraine, and they have nothing like this there, so that any single image appears to be very precious... Oleksiy.golubov (talk) 18:13, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- When you wrote geograph, I assumed you were referring to those websites but Flickr and Panoramio are good places to look. AFAIK only Flickr allows you to make selective searches under the Creative Commons licences here but only the first and last licences are acceptable to us. Good luck. - Sorry for causing a misunderstanding (maybe, Leoboudv misunderstood me too...) I only wrote geography, meaning that these were photos of Ukrainian monuments and churches. (Oleksiy.golubov (talk) 20:16, 16 March 2012 (UTC))
In response to your message on my talkpage and the discussion above I have a few comments.
According to Commons:FOP#Ukraine there is no freedom of panorama in Ukraine. So Architectural works (plans, models, and actual buildings, as well as a statues and sculptures are objects of copyright. So unless the monuments and churches are old then photos of them may not be eligible for Commons.
If your friend has uploaded the photos to a website he could make a statement on the website that the photos are license as Cc-by-sa-3.0 for example. He could also send a mail to us. If the photos are not uploaded on a website he should send a mail.
He/you could copy the standard text from Commons:Email templates/Consent and fill in the missing parts and send it to the adress mentioned on the page. --MGA73 (talk) 22:27, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ~riley (talk) 04:47, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
