Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Indiana in 1812 map
[edit]That's a nice map you made for w:Indiana in the War of 1812. I suck at making maps, so I'm glad you know what you're doing. I found this map at the IUPUI digital collection; I'd like to use it, but I haven't found a good way to download it. Mingusboodle (talk) 18:02, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! I don't think I am very good at it. Photoshop helps alot though. Charles Edward (talk) 02:18, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.
Thank you.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:42, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Battle of Tippecanoe Map
[edit]Thanks for supplying a map of the battle ground. However, I visited the site today and I noticed that your label showing a steep bluff to the east-southeast of the battleground is in the wrong area. The steep bluff is to the west between where the Harrison's troop encampment was and Burnett's creek. The terrain to the east is relatively level and only slightly sloping.
- Thanks for the information, I will try to dig up my source map to double check, and will relabel and upload a new version. Charles Edward (talk) 18:18, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Whitewater Canal Map
[edit]Regaurding the map of the Whitewater canal. It is inaccurate as it shows the canal following the east fork of the Whitewater to Richmond and not the west fork to Connersville, Cambridge City and Hagerstown. There was a Canal surveyed on the route drawn, nut it was never built.
- Thats right, the map was to show its intended path as part of an article about the canal. (Indiana went bankrupt trying to finish its construction). If you should have a source thats shows the route of the canal being different than it is currently, I would gladly update the map. It is currently based off a book I have. Charles Edward (talk)

Copyright status: File:Boyhood home of Sherman Minton.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Boyhood home of Sherman Minton.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
January (talk) 16:47, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
- Just to clarify, the FOP tag only covers the building shown, it needs an additional license tag covering the actual photograph. January (talk) 16:53, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Indiana Indian treaties.jpg
[edit]The 12-mile purchase line (Treaty of Fort Wayne 1809) west of the Greenville treaty line is misplaced: The purchase was 12 miles wide, and the line therefore passes 12 miles west of the Greenville Treaty line. Your map shows a width more than twice that (Fayette County is about 13.5 miles wide, for example). The Purchase line also extends further north - it passes thru Wayne County and into Randolph county. I believe it intersects the Grouseland Treaty line. The northern boundary of the western tract above Vincennes is also misplaced - the southeastern endpoint of the boundary is much further east than the eastern boundary of the Vincennes tract, so the tract is significantly bigger than you've shown it. Sbalfour (talk) 18:37, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback. When I made that, I based it off a map in the cited source on the page. If you have source which shows it more clearly you can update the image, it would be much appreciated. Thanks! Charles Edward (talk) 18:56, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
- Your source shows the 10 O'clock boundary line in the correct position, and does not show the 12-mile purchase line at all. Sbalfour (talk) 19:03, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
