Image deletion warning Template:Copyrighted IOC has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Question about image description deletion

[edit]

Hi, Cary - in this discussion about deletion of en duplicates of Commons images, your deletion of an image description was cited as a reason why versions of images at en Wikipedia should not be deleted. I was hoping you might be able to recall and explain so I could address this concern. Kelly (talk) 21:14, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That "description" was using terrible wikiformatting, and I probably removed it because it seemed like it did not belong on the image page. I may have made a wrong action, however. I could have just as easily done the same action at Wikipedia, so his argument is completely irrelevant.Bastique demandez 09:07, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I thought it was something like that - thank you, Cary. Kelly (talk) 16:36, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Admin access for self and bot

[edit]

Hi, I kindly request the safe return of my own and my bots admin flag. -- Cat ちぃ? 18:45, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, I think it might be better if this went back to the community for decision, rather than an individual steward. Videmus Omnia (talk) 19:17, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, no. He left in good standing, and there's no reason to subject him to community approval. This has been done, recently, twice in the past, with Majorly and Gmaxwell. And, incedentally, I'm a bureaucrat of this project and would be doing it in that capacity. Bastique demandez 19:22, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Another 'crat saw it otherwise; the circumstances were not tranquil and opined that given the issues that surrounded his de-adminship, he would have to go through a serious community discussion or even an RfA to get his rights back. Cheers, Jack Merridew 08:52, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion is ongoing, Jack. I'd respectfully suggest your comment here isn't the most helpful at this time. —Giggy 12:11, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cary, what is your definition of "in good standing"? There was certainly controversy surrounding White Cat when he resigned. I think it would be a good idea for the community to decide this (if White Cat follows through on the request). Personally, I would be opposed to White Cat (or his bot) being granted admin privs here. From my interactions with him, he has a caustic personality that does not seem appropriate for an admin. Kaldari (talk) 16:39, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am completely withdrawing this request. It was a waste of time to try I think. I shall part ways with commons for quite a while. -- Cat ちぃ? 18:34, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Usurpation of Macy

Hello, could you please tell me how much do I have to wait to usurp the account Macy? I know that if the user does not replies in 7 days, the account gets usurped. Could that be possible? I can't wait six months to usurp the username. Robinsonsmay (talk) 19:53, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I said on the page, you will not be allowed to usurp this account at this time. Either pick a new username or wait until the policy changes. Bastique demandez 07:57, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Old postcards

[edit]

Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Konigstein81.jpg is very interesting, and it would be nice if we could extract from it some useful policy or at least guidance as to how old postcards should be handled. I have hundreds which I could upload, but many will raise the same issues as this, and I don't want to have to go through the same old arguments every time. Even better would be to work out some rules on anonymous images generally, but I suspect from past discussions that that will be much harder. I am thinking of working up a policy page on postcards, at least. If you have any thoughts on the general principles that should apply, could you leave me a note on my talk page? --MichaelMaggs (talk) 16:48, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Guy Fawkes portrait

[edit]

Hi. I noticed CommonsDelinker removing the reference to Image:GuyFawkesportrait.jpg on bg.Wikipedia and out of curiosity I decided to check the reason and to look for substitutes. I found Image:PortraitOfGuyFawkes.jpg, but it seems to me like a copyvio, too. It's the only contribution of its uploader. --Daggerstab (talk) 20:13, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can't tell anything from that upload. It's hard to tell from that upload, but it's not the one we get threatening letters about. Bastique demandez 22:22, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Try being a bit more civil in future. An honest mistake but you are in danger of losing contributors if you threaten them. Also try asking my good friend Bill Wedemeyer about me and you'll be shocked to learn about me. Dr. Blofeld (talk) 21:16, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This was not a case of civility, I was stating simple facts. It's enormously difficult to upload images to Commons without seeing our copyright policies, and after having removed the exact same image only months earlier, and seeing your talk page full of notices, it was rather easy to assume that you haven't read up on what is and is not permitted. If you have since learned, I congratulate you. I left you a note to see that you take better care in order that you don't get yourself blocked from contributing, in the event you hadn't; I did not say that I would be the one to block you, so it wasn't a threat. I'm also not certain what your being friends with Mr. Wedemeyer has to do with anything. Bastique demandez 22:22, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you studied my contributions over the last week which anybody would think are valuable you would see I am clearly aware of what is acceptable in the commons in terms of licensing and am working very hard to uploaded images. I am under no obligation to help this project whatsoever so I found your threat a bit harsh given that 99% of my uploads are completely valid and acceptable ones. Forgive my ignorance for assuming that it was a 400 year old painting. The portrait seemed too detailed to be completely imagined. It was uploaded in good faith and neither did I have any knowledge of a previous version being uploaded. I mentioned Mr. Wedemeyer because you seem to be under the impression I am incompetent and unwelcome in the commons or some copyright nuisance and I'm sure he would state quite the opposite, on wikipedia anyway. I'm doing my best to upload valid images and 99% of the time getting it right so please be a little more patient. Dr. Blofeld (talk) 12:32, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Bastique!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

latuff

[edit]

Hi,Bastique. I do not think the e-mails on somebody page are good enough reason to keep the images. There should be permission attached to each file and not e-mails from somebody to somebody on somebody page. Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 00:01, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're not going to get these images deleted by claiming license fraud, because it's a simple matter to get Latuff to agree to the license. I personally don't think we need every example of his images, but I'm clearly in the minority in that regard and will not trump community consensus. If you don't like the images, you don't have to look at them. Bastique demandez 00:04, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Then let's do it. The permission should be requested and posted in every image. BTW I translated what he said in his e-mail. He says: "I released the images for any use, so they are spread by the world, without any obstacle. I usually say that they are "copyleft". And even that anybody wants to use them in commercial way, it has no problem, because they will be spreading so the Palestinian cause.", but he never mentioned that he allows his images to get changed. I'd like to see it too. Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 00:08, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for your time.

Abigor talk 13:16, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I confirm that I am almost everytime on IRC and can deal with operator status on there, if needed of course (on #wikipedia-fr, we must have the voice and send the message “#wikipedia-fr op <username>” to ChanServ if we want to be opped temporarily). I would also like to have more information about the policy if possible. Thank you in advance. Diti the penguin 13:25, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
IRC is not Commons. Everyone does not need the operator tag. If there's been a problem with not having enough operators, someone should mention that to me and describe the problem. Bastique demandez 16:35, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I noticed you reinstated this file after deletion, stating that it was public domain because of its length of use. However, I can see no evidence that the logo was in use as early as 1882, and indeed, consider it rather unlikely that this was the case. Have you traced any evidence to support your claim about the age of the logo? I'd have thought it would be much more likely to be a post-war design putting it well within the 70 year copyright limit. I believe the uploader is working on getting that very information as well as a better version of the logo. He was unaware of the message left him on Commons, and in any case, this is certainly not something that needs to be speedy deleted. Copyvio is something that we only use when it's a certain copyright violation, not something we're not sure about. Defamation

[edit]

Damned straight it's not defamation. Nor was that photo libelous. In fact, I'd rather enjoy a libel suit on the merits of the substance of the purported "defamation". That would be an awful lot like someone having to hold a libel suit for someone calling them a racist - don't you think? Except for that I was *not* a racist, and she is, what she is.

As for violations of her privacy. Well, that's pretty funny. It's her own fault I found out who she was. She shouldnt've come sat next to me on Pennsylvania Avenue. That was pretty arrogant, and it cost her. Feel free to tell her that. 83.77.26.11 13:46, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And by now, I think we're all clear that this wasn't a case of libel in my direction. After all, it's a full blown case, and we all know where it went. Don't we. 83.77.26.11 13:49, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Of course it's not defamation or libel, if we're talking about the photograph I added a comment to recently (where I said, "this is not defamation"). As for the rest of what you're talking about, I'm clueless. Bastique demandez 19:33, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fun Coast, Florida Map Request

[edit]

Hi Bastique, I noticed you made several Florida Maps in this category. I have a need for a similar Florida Map, highlighting Volusia and Flagler counties, which market themselves in the tourism industry as the "Fun Coast". I am planning to assemble a new article for the Fun Coast and ask if you could create such a map? I can make a PNG, but have no clue how to make a SVG file - LOL. Thank you for your consideration. Hello Bastique,

I think I need to reopen this old CU case because the puppetmaster is editing again under this new account (copyvioler with puppets). He is uploading again unfree images from Skyscrapercity. I really don't know how to reopen the case but see here for evidence. I hope you can help me. Best regards. Dferg (commons-meta) 16:01, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello Cary,

I was thinking about doing a new request for Otrs permission but first I would like to hear your opinion.

I am active on Commons with the undeletion page and I think it could really help if I could check things myself without asking other people and have to wait for a answer. I am a active commons user and I am almost everyday active on a Wikimedia project. And have communety trust and a sysop or crat bit on three projects.

What do you think? Should I try again or should I wait? About my previeus account on nl.wiki, all active contributors knows about the change so there are no secrets anymore.

Image in Italian Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello, Basteque.

I'm trying to do an article on the Italian Wikipedia about the Spanish Wikipedia.

How could I put the Spanish Wikipedia logo on my article in the Italian Wikipedia?.

Thank you!

Ferbrunnen, Ascolto! 05:06 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello,
I'm not Bastique but I will try to answer your question. The logo of the Spanish Wikipedia is available here on Commons, so it can be used on all 700 Wikimedia Foundation projects. I did some looking for you and I think you need this file.
To use it in your article you can just use: or if you want to use it as a thumb
I hope my answer could help you,

I put a comment on Village Pump here about some old photos that the Mexican government sent me in response to something I wrote to them on their website. Lupo said something about contacting you about what I could do to make sure I can upload these, but I havent heard anything. We got some big donations from the German government, so there's got to be a way I can work out what you and the Mexican government need to make this happen. That they sent me what they sent me is a good sign. Thelmadatter (talk) 14:04, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unification des comptes

[edit]

Nom actuel : Jef132. Nom demandé : Jef 132.

Merci d’avance, --Jef132 (talk) 15:12, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the consensus to disregard the fact that categories are simply a tool for organising content, not an endorsement of any particular content? This has been discussed on numerous occasions and I don't believe consensus has ever emerged to support this bizarre categorisation. This image relates to the subject that is Alan Dershowitz, there is no necessity to sort that category further because it only contains one other image so this subcategory is completely pointless.

How does it violate the board resolution on Biographies of Living Persons? You've said it does but not explained why. You must be aware that this is controversial yet you simply go ahead and impose your opinion.

If this is the official position of the Foundation then please make this clear. Even if that was the case, the community deserve an explanation as to the reasoning not simply "this image in the Alan Dershowtiz category violates BLP". If it really is the case that the way we categorise images can violate the board resolution then it would be more constructive to raise this with the community so it can be integrated into our policies, rather than simply changing one image. Adambro (talk) 17:14, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Another Message from the HebrewPedia Readers and Users

[edit]

Hello. I was referred to Mr Cary Bass by Mr Dror Kamir of the Israel Wikimedia after the latter had tried for us to address the U.S-based foundation, or rather those in the organization pointedly involved in the task of aiding in the Hebrew Wikipedia unsoluble troubles with mass-vandalization now occurring there, and had given me the personal name of the executive in charge of this file.

Searching for the source of the mechanism enabling the Hebrew Wikipedia project to be subject to constant Trolls' infiltration, charlatanry and malice has not rendered significant answers to us, standing against wide phenomenae of text vandalization, hostile Bot planting and Hacking of a broader and broader range in the past months, in virtually all site's sections and layers.

As we now stand subject to conclusions in the legal fields to-come on one hand, and confront the Trolls' insistence in harming our articles day-by-day on the other, and after it has come clear that they use diverse advanced technological methods - including deep-manipulating the infrastructure of one of Israel's ISP's - to gain control over my and my colleagues's user's-zone and authomatically earase messages posted on the administrative bulletin boards with no meaning other than sow tempest and bring us to leave the project, I thought I should contact you to assure your act with no delay.

Since I have not located your personal e-mail address, I am posting this message here, as well as forwarding it, as Mr Kamir has done before me with the original message, to the Wikimedia Foundation's e-mail address. Kindly check that you guys have received those e-mails and inform me of their reception, so that cooperation in this hot matter is guaranteed.

Hereby is, which may seem esoteric, the smallest example of what Wikipedia is facing incessantly, and it refers to a pattern of obsessive vandalization in the he:wiki article texts. A whole lot more is, however, to be found in previous mailings and we are (sadly) talking about performances of much harder affect, those of deep hacking-style user-oriented vandalizations.

I have checked the files, and have deleted all of them, here on Commons we have a lot of uploads a day a lot of them are pretty good but still a lot gets nominated for deletion. The three files you just give where all in the category of images that need to be deleted or fixed because the are missing source information, permission information or license information, this is also one of the most backlogged parts of our deletion process so it could take some more time than the seven days as said in the template.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience but we are working with a small team so hard as we can to keep Commons clean, if you now users on the Spanish Wikipedia that are good with images send them to Commons, we need good users and good administrators. :)

100 Years' War

[edit]

There's a w:100 Years' War which is a problem for many users. Many users are annoyed/frustrated/at wits' end due to a very large number of long arguments centering around a small number of users, over similar issues again and again on page after page, that are very disrupting. They are nominally mostly about copyright; see how Nilfanion describes it. Please see my comment here (tagged 13:35, 28 November 2009 (UTC)) followed by an understating long reply from Nilfanion and the follow-up there and on the page Nilfanion created. Someone in authority needs to take the time to get a grasp on the situation (and I don't think that'll be easy) and take some decisive action. Are you up for it? I've got a hunch the problem is bigger than a single user, but I'm not sure. Should I ask Bastique, or do you think there's a regular admin up for the task? Please, please help! Pretty please?--Elvey (talk) 04:59, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nilfanion seems to have made a good start at trying to organise what the dispute is about. There isn't a formal dispute resolution process here at Commons beyond the various noticeboards. I think getting Bastique's view on this will help, as I don't see resolving this as something any one admin can do. It will take multiple admins working together I suspect. I hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 15:32, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Three Dead Navy SEALs in Operation Redwing.PNG is being discussed on deletion review. You were the last administrator to delete this image, and you wrote that the deletion was based on a request from the family. In the deletion discussion many participants asserted the family requested deletion. But there was no OTRS to back this up. The first mention of deletion in the interests of the family was written from a throw-away account. If your subsequent deletion was based on an OTRS ticket would you mind citing its OTRS number?

Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 23:10, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I will not go searching through the OTRS database to cite the OTRS ticket number, because there is no requirement for that. I corresponded with the individuals in question, and am convinced that the request is sincere. The image will not be restored. Bastique demandez 23:20, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

closing ongoing undeletion debates innapropriately

[edit]

hi;

i note that you closed an ongoing undeletion request debate, & did so without properly taking credit as the closer.

re this image: File:Three Dead Navy SEALs in Operation Redwing.PNG

i'm sorry, but i feel that your actions here were inappropriate, especially for a "bureaucrat"; who should be held to a higher standard, when it comes to following proper procedures.

i also note that you have refused to produce the OTRS info. not that such a request, even if legitimate, is justification for the deletion.

i won't go any further into the details of issues under discussion here; but you reasons, or rather lack of reasons for making an unsigned close of the discussion, while it was in progress, seem inappropriate. especially considering both: a) your previous involvement with this matter, & b) your strongly stated personal feelings in the case.

i understand that you have strong feelings on this, but as an admin+ level sysop on wmc, it is your responsibility to exercise your powers objectively, & differentiate between what you feel personally, & what you apply as "enforcement".

it is also important to remember that commons is a collabourative effort, & not a private collection of images, where one is free to choose what to include & what to exclude, based on personal preferences.

if you cannot maintain objective professionalism in this case, perhaps it would be best if you participated in the discussion as a "normal" user only?

i am formally asking you to explain your actions; if you do not do so, i shall pursue the matter elsewhere.

Lx 121 (talk) 19:33, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh. Let's see if we can deal finish this.
 • A) You do realize Cary works for the Foundation right? So not only is he a crat here, he's got an even higher level of responsibility. Even when doing the Commons thing on his free time he has to be extra careful. He knows that, we know that. We, Commons in general, trust Cary.
 • B) Where has he "refused" to provided OTRS? All I've seen is that he got OTRS for it, deleted it and forgot to include the ticket number. Do you have OTRS access? Use the mother loving search feature. I do, but I only have access to "permissions".
 • C) If he hadn't of closed this, I would have. I went as far as salting this file afterward to make a point.
 • D) I'll try to put this as nicely as I can possibly muster: Stop being a fucking asshole. The fucking family of these men asked politely for the picture to be removed, and by fucking god, we will. Just because WE CAN have an image doesn't mean WE SHOULD. Do you also think we should have child porn on Commons? I doubt it.
 • E) If I haven't make myself abundantly clear, this conversation about the dead marinesSEALS is OVER and WILL NOT be restarted in the foreseeable future.
PS. You might consider using your shift key, I hear it is the "hip" thing these days. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 20:28, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to pop up like this, but I have to express my agreement with Bastique and ShakataGaNai. These particular photographs are not essential to anything for us; for the people involved, they yield an amount of suffering that would simply make it cruel on our part to keep these available.

[edit]

the purpose of wmc is to serve as a media repository

that means: this is a place where media resources are kept.

that means: as far as media files are concerned, we are supposed to be a reliable supplier providing complete coverage of topics; materials that are factually accurate & comprehensive.

commons is not a "retail" outlet. we are a "wholesale distributor"; we supply the media raw materials for others to make use of.

if you look @ the [stats] for anything on commons, & compare it with the same topic @ wp, you will see that wmc gets a tiny fraction of the traffic @ wp (eng).

in part, that is to be expected; since wmc is not targetted @ end-users

but

outside of the wikimedia community, pretty much nobody takes wmc seriously as a media resource.

there are multiple reasons for this; but unprofessionalism, poor organization of the materials, inadequate coverage (both in terms of individual topics, & range of topics) would be at or near the top of this list (not to mention the miserable inadequacy of the mediawiki software; especially as re: organizing a large database of materials, & performing tasks with media files).

office clearly knows they have a problem here, that commons isn't "working". they put out that survey a while ago, to find out why people aren't using commons more; i expect they have more efforts in mind & in process.

specific to the case under discussion
[edit]
the image
[edit]

the afghan war is history, politics, current events, &c., etc., et cetera.

an image of dead u.s. soldiers as a part of the outcome of a military operation, is part of the documentation of the afghan war, it is a part of history. it doesn't matter how the families feel; i'm sorry for their loss, but that does not justify censoring our coverage of the afghan war.

any objective judge would be able to see that the image is important, in its historical context.

in 10 years, historians should & will judge this decision @ wmc as incompetent & censoring coverage of the war.

commons is not censored! either that means something, or it doesn't

either we are serious about the project's goal, or we're "playing club".

the details
[edit]

the claim of copyvio/uncertain status has been shot down repeatedly in the repeated discussions of this. "weak" is an understatement for this rationale; if we apply this "rule of law" to commons scrupulously, we can probably get ride of at least 5-10% of the material in our collection.

if there is a problem with the accompanying information (another point where proof is needed), then that can be easily fixed; "dead U.S. soldiers in the afghan war (a.d.2001+)" would probably do it. another invalid rationale for deletion.

the only reason being given, that has any potential validity, is the claim re: request from the families.

& i'm sorry, but that reason is not good enough to censor commons & wikipedia!

also; if the i.d. of the soldiers is in question: how on earth can we "confirm" the legitimacy of the "families' request"!?

i do not recall seeing the "closing note" at the top of the discussion when i started this topic; however i am willing to agf. i'm sorry if i missed it previously; it is more conventional to sign @ the bottom.

as for the mysterious, disappearing otrs,; transparency is an essential part of wm procedure.

if this person really is from "office", then they should know that.

i use the shift key when i'm writing something important, something that is mean to last; for this kind of trivial ephemera, i type with one hend :P

Those are your opinions. Unfortunately, most people don't agree with you and they don't deal with the reality of the situation. The image is gone, salted, and will not be restored, and frankly, you're spending way too much time on this extremely unproductive issue. This is an extremely rare situation, so please, don't waste everyone's time by making it appear as if I'm being abusive or violating policy. Everyone's time is best spent elsewhere, and any other comments on this issue are going to be categorically reverted. Bastique demandez 17:21, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So she asked the Office for help, and she got it the way she wants. And you just let her continue her monthly slanderous attacks on me. It is pathetic. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 20:20, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Putting an image that you know highly offended her on your talk page, right' next to her remarks is either idiotic or malicious. Assuming good faith on your part means assuming the former, and I know that you're smarter than that. You and she need to stay away from each other. You're on very shaky ground right now, and your vindictive nomination of that image as a featured candidate serves only to illustrate your bad faith. I'm sure you'll notice but replied on my talk page. Short version I agree - RFC is well overdue here.--Nilfanion (talk) 20:03, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Cary. I know about that file, I should have taken care of it earlier. In fact, it kinda boggles me: I am quite sure I did read the guidelines before creating the logo, and at the time I remember seeing the italics requirement somewhere. When I came back later to look that up, I didn't find it, even browsing the history of the guidelines page. I guess it was some kind of glitch in the Matrix :P

Anyway, I'll fix the image and ask the replacement of our wiki logo in bugzilla. I should take care of it tonight or in the next few days. I'll keep you posted :) Cheers, Waldir talk 11:04, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
