Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Copyright status: File:De vogels van Nederlandsch Indie - Circus assimilis.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:De vogels van Nederlandsch Indie - Circus assimilis.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

- User:BartBotje, I appreciate your work but you have to remember to copy a license from the source file to the files derived from it. I fixed the above files (again), but you need to be adding license templates to the files you upload. Also please use {{Extracted from}} template. Please let me know if something I am saying is not clear or if you need any help. --Jarekt (talk) 13:57, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Harvard University Museum of Comparative Zoology - Agama weidholzi.jpg.
- User:BartBotje / User:Bj.schoenmakers, Another batch without license templates, which I had to clean up for you. You are doing great service by extracting the photographs, but also creating a lot of work for others because of your inability to follow our requirements. Also it is not acceptable for someone running a bot too be so unresponsive to problems me and others are telling you about. Any more uploads without license and I will block you for a day. --Jarekt (talk) 14:04, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
- Sorry about that, I just now got your messages. I instructed my bot to use the license information from the original files. Thanks for all your work, i'll try not to bother you any further.. sorry
- I am glad to hear from you. I did not realized that this is a bot account. Could you look through your uploads, Me and others added a lot of license templates, but likely not to all of them. They still might get deleted for lack of licenses. --Jarekt (talk) 02:01, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

Methodology
[edit]Hi — also pinging User:Bj.schoenmakers,
I like how you are bringing in materials from a wide range of sources and featured you in the current Open Access report. I would like to know more about how you do it (E.g. do you work by sources or taxa? How do you identify things to upload? Do you upload from PDF or XML or HTML or other formats? Where is your code?), as I am doing similar things and think it would be great to join forces, especially since I share your interest in biodiversity. I also noticed that you uploaded some files that were already there (e.g. File:ZooKeys - Enyalioides azulae (adult male) head.jpg is a low-res copy of File:Holotype of Enyalioides azulae - ZooKeys-277-069-g001-middle.jpg). -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 18:18, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

- User:Bj.schoenmakers, you are doing it again, uploading images without license templates and not checking your talk page. Also please do not directly add Category:Extracted images, Category:CC-PD-Mark, Category:PD Old and other maintenance categories. They are added directly by templates and in each case the category description asks to "Please do not add this category manually.", otherwise you are breaking the tracking mechanism. --Jarekt (talk) 12:53, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
- Sorry, another bug. I instructed my bot to insert the licence headers (based on the original file) for the files mentioned above (actually last 500 fileuploads were checked). Should be OK now. Thank you for your work! I'll keep in mind not adding the special categories from now on.. Bj.schoenmakers (talk) 22:51, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

I'll try to change the bot code or create other templates when i have more time, for now I will insert some extra text and change the waybackmachine/archive.org link on upload. world.observation.org/observado.org/waarnemingen.be/waarneming.nl/euro.observation.org (etc..) all use the same backend data(base). I'm not sure if these sites will change too in the future. Maybe i'll change it to upload the files using my own personal account, since most of them are my own work and they don't like me to upload the stuff of other users eventhough the licence says i can...
Bj.schoenmakers (talk) 08:16, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
