Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:46, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

File source is not properly indicated: File:Rrsimpson.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Rrsimpson.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
[[:File:Rrsimpson.jpg]] ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

[edit]Hello Bahnfrend. I just noticed your photo of Q1 trolleybus - very nice. Did you happen to take any more images of that event? Ultra7 (talk) 18:14, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- No problem, thanks for uploading what you had. I was just concerned you might have taken more but hadn't uploaded them yet for lack of time or info. After a walk like that though, I can fully understand why you didn't - I hope you all had fun anyway, definitely one of those happy coincidences (especially if you like buses and/or have kids to occupy). Do you know if the Japanese cultural center (described in http://www.perthwalkabout.com/Arts-Culture/hyogo-prefectural.html) is in a building separate from the Japanese school? I know they are on the same property but I am not sure if they share the same building? I didn't know about the center's existence until now. It's cool that Perth has it! New empty categories
[edit]Hello, Bahnfrend. I noticed that you created quite a few categories, including Category:2011 in water transport by country, Category:1927 in rail transport by country, and similar ones, and that many of them are empty. On Commons, we are asked to create categories only when there is something to put into them. Do you have something to put into all these categories? If not, then they can be deleted for now. --Auntof6 (talk) 13:38, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- Actually the new categories are not really empty. They're populated with sub-categories that are operated by templates, and unfortunately the templates take a little while to update themselves. If you wait a few days, the templates should all have updated, and from then onwards, the new categories will then be automatically populated, in some cases with quite a lot of sub-categories. Bahnfrend (talk) 13:43, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I will check again in a few days. By the way, I moved your reply here to keep the conversation thread together. If you have another reply, you can leave it here and I will see it. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 14:00, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- I've just checked and the templates are still not working yet. I've encountered this problem before - they're sometimes really slow to update the way they operate, and I suspect that it's a bug in the Commons software (there isn't a similar problem on English Wikipedia). As I'm only an editor, not a Wikimedia employee, there isn't really anything I can do about the problem, other than encourage people to be patient - the templates will update automatically in the end. Bahnfrend (talk) 06:49, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

What is your intention for this new category? There is already the category Category:Aircraft by year which seems to do the same thing, but captures all media. Josh (talk) 16:41, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
International trucks
[edit]There is a discussion on this page whether images should be categorised as International trucks or International Harvester trucks. Not many wikipedia contributors have contributed to the discussion or voted with their preference, but you have contributed to material on International Harvester. I would be grateful, if you have the time, if you would share your own opinion on the page name. And thank you. Eddaido (talk) 00:30, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
Overcategorising
[edit]You seem to be quite a serial over-categoriser and I'm not quite sure fo the purpose of some of your new categories. For example, what is the purpose of Category:Oil tankers by country of location and how is it different from Category:Oil tankers by country? Unless you're planning to create Category:Oil tankers by country of origin or something similar (for example), then creating these additional layers simply makes it harder to navigate through the category system. Sionk (talk) 21:43, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- It is far better to create categories that actually have content (more than one or two items) rather than unnecessary additional steps. The purpose of categorisation is to be a finding aid, not to have small numbers of items buried deep in a category chain. Sionk (talk) 18:29, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Please stop creating stupid unnecessary categories such as "Police of Foo" since for example Tasmania Police isn't known as Police of Tasmania. Police of Foo may work in the US where there is a large number of police agencies and departments but in Australia, really? Also redirect template is for redirecting. So just stop creating a mess. Bidgee (talk) 20:20, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

Please consider adding iw-links here on Commons
[edit]Dear Bahnrend,
Thanks for creating new categories here on Commons as you did recently for Category:Ashleigh Gardner. It would be great if you could as well add the interwiki-link to the corresponding page on en-wikipedia by clicking here on commons in the sidebar menu under 'In Wikipedia' on 'Add links' and then putting in the appearing pop-up box the link to the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. This will add a link to commons to all language versions of the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. Moreover this will avoid the corresponding article to be included in the maintenance category en:Category:Commons category template with no category set.
Many thanks if you could consider to do so, indeed this would reduce my efforts on adding these iw links later through patrolling the pages listed on the pre-mentioned category on en-wikipedia. I would like to thank you for all the great work you are realizing on en-wikipedia and here on commons.
If you have any further questions on this do not hesitate to contact me. Best regards and already now my very best wishes for you for the New Year.Robby (talk) 14:48, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

Apartment hotels has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. Hitching Post outside National Bank in Wagin
[edit]Hi Bahnfred, a bit of an unusual request here. Two of your images, File:National Australia Bank building, Wagin, 2018 (02).jpg and File:National Australia Bank building, Wagin, 2018 (01).jpg show a little white post on the footpath. Turns out the little post is quite unique, a bit of a last of its kind in Wagin, and state heritage listed, see here and here. You wouldn't have a close up of that post or an image where you could extract a good enough image? I would use the image for an upcoming List of State Register of Heritage Places in the Shire of Wagin article. Calistemon (talk) 11:33, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- No worries, I have used one of your two images that show the post for now. It is arguably the smallest state heritage listed item that I have come across, this little post! I can see how its significance can easily be missed. If you get a picture one day, let me know or just add it to the article. If, on the way, you can fill any gaps on en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Western Australia/State Register of Heritage Places requiring photos/Country WA, that would also be appreciated. And, finally, the reason there aren't as many gaps as they could be is down to a handful of dedicated photographers like yourself who's work helped to fill these gaps. Calistemon (talk) 13:04, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- I managed to get a few images of the post while passing through Wagin on the way to a camping trip to Katanning, but feel free to add to the collection of images if you are happen to get there one day. Calistemon (talk) 05:04, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you
[edit]Dear fellow Commons photographer,
I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.
At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Vehicles by color by country has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Rest area Monument?
[edit]Dear Bahnfrend, the photo's in the Category:Rest area Monument do not always show the monument and the name "Rest area Monument" does not exist. Overhere you can clearly see what is meant with it: it is the Category:Standbeeld Cornelis Lely (Afsluitdijk). Can you please have deleted your category? Because this is not good. Ymnes (talk) 05:56, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Ymnes: There is no duplication, and therefore no problem. Category:Standbeeld Cornelis Lely (Afsluitdijk) is a category for a statue. Category:Monument Afsluitdijk is a category for a monument. The category I created, Category:Rest area Monument, is a category for a Motorway rest area where both the statue and the monument are located. To minimise any confusion, I have now added the first two categories to the third category. "Rest area Monument" is the English translation for "Verzorgingsplaats Monument", about which there is a Dutch Wikipedia article here, so the rest area really does exist and has a name. I have now linked the category and the article via Wikidata. I named the new category "Rest area Monument", because that is the standard (English language) form for names of such articles on Wikimedia Commons - see Category:Rest areas in the Netherlands, which includes dozens of such articles named in that form. The images I added to the new category all depict at least part of the rest area and are therefore properly included in that category. Bahnfrend (talk) 02:06, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply, I see now that you're right and that the "Verzorgingsplaats" (rest area) is really called "Monument" (w:nl:Verzorgingsplaats Monument). I didn't imagine one could have called it like this. Including the Wikidata Infobox it's very well like this. Ymnes (talk) 15:18, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Category:BVG xxxx
[edit]Hi Bahnfrend, first I want to apologize for my bad English. I saw, that you created some categories for BVG vehicles in Berlin. Please note, the Category:BVG xxxx (unit number) is ambigous. BVG 5001 e.g. is the number of a bus, a tram but also an underground train. Also there were several other BVG vehicles with this number, at least three more tram cars. Could you please move these categories to a clearly name? Thanks in advance. -- Platte ∪∩∨∃∪ 06:16, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
