Move of File:Waterfall on the Sanda River.jpg and similar photographs

This move does not make sense, at least for my photographs (you already moved about 20), because all of them are already in the dedicated categories which are subcategories of Category:Faroe Islands. My idea was to create a category system for the Faroe Islands similar to fully independent states, such as Category:Lithuania photographs taken on 2018-08-09 and its parent categories.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:05, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

@Ymblanter: I moved those photographs out of Category:Photographs of the Faroe Islands because that category is supposed to contain only categories, not individual files. That is why I moved it and others. --Auntof6 (talk) 12:07, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
Yes, but now they have duplicate categorization. The parent category must be either removed or replaced by category per year-month-day (still to be created).--Ymblanter (talk) 12:09, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
If you want, I can go through everything in Category:Faroe Islands and remove Category:Faroe Islands from the files that have any other Faroe Islands category. --Auntof6 (talk) 12:11, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
Sure, if I want, I can clean up the mess you created. Thank you for the offer.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:18, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
If you're going to be rude, I'll let you take care of it yourself, although it would be very easy for me to do it with AWB. --Auntof6 (talk) 12:20, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
I apologize, I read your reply as "you can go ..." but now I see that you have written "I can go", so that my reply was obviously misplaced. I am not sure this is my preferred solution, let me think about it and come back to you.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:30, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
I solved the problem by creating categories such as Category:Faroe Islands photographs taken on 2017-07-17. My own files only fit into three of such categories, but it could be also an interesting solution for other photographs. However, for the time being, the best solution might be removing Category:Faroe Islands from all photos which are also in its subcategories.--Ymblanter (talk) 15:01, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

Thames file dumping by tourists, not into correct section of the river.

Can we please allow, rather than deny as you have done, template:catcat on Category:River Thames. Over 10 people every few months add images to just Thames and expect other editors to clean out, because the alternative warning is so weak in this day and age of 'image sharing' people just dump. They don't care or read. They just dump. I feel like Bazalgette (designer of the great sewers of London). This is not on. Adam37 (talk) 23:20, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

I don't think catcat would stop that. People and bots are going to dump files into this kind of category no matter what we do. They may not even know what section of the river applies. In my view, if catcat is used there needs to be a reason that individual files don't belong in a category. Such a reason is usually indicated in the category name. The biggest example of such an indication is with metacats, but examples of categories that use catcat are any category whose name starts with "Categories" (because the name says it contains categories) and Category:Animated films by title (which has one category per title and each title corresponds to one film, meaning that it's not a metacat). The River Thames category doesn't have such an indication. It's the general category for the river, so the best I think we can do is use categorise. --Auntof6 (talk) 01:29, 5 January 2020 (UTC)

Not wearing his glasses

Hey, you moved this image from "Men with glasses" to "Men wearing glasses" - not that I care too much, but he's not actually wearing them. He's holding them. Do you mind if I revert or is there some other arrangement that I don't know about? Thanks :) -- Deadstar (msg) 18:26, 29 January 2020 (UTC) PS: Unless we're referring to the blurry guy in the background, who is actually wearing his glasses. And there's also "Category:People holding eyeglasses".

@Deadstar: Oops, thanks for catching that. I've changed it back. I don't think the guy in the background should be counted because he's not the focus of the picture, and because it's not a good image of him. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:46, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
Category discussion warning

Category:Ames_(disambiguation) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

"Books by authors from Romania" and "Books from Romania by authors" are not the same thing

To me the category "Books from Romania" refers to books published in Romania. The change you made doesn't reflect the content correctly, unless "Books from Romania" has a different meaning than my understanding. "Books by authors from Romania" = books written by Romanian authors while "Books from Romania by authors" = books published in Romania grouped by authors. The category "Books by authors from Romania" reflects its content with no confusion. "Books from Romania by authors" it happens to contain "Books by authors from Romania" but not entirely. For example, in "Books by Nicolae Iorga" you will find plenty of books published in Paris. Famous authors have their books translated and published in other countries than their native country or not even translated but published in a different country than their native country. Whether published or not in his/her native country you will include them in this category: "Books by [author]", but then it doesn’t make sense to have this whole category included in "Books from [country] by author" since some of the books are published in multiple other countries. So, the category "Books by [author]" being included in "Books from [country] by author" is not a good idea. Can you please revert the change? Luanlou (talk) 00:46, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

Can I get un update on my request? Thank you! Luanlou (talk) 00:26, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
@Luanlou: Sorry for the delay. I couldn't get to it before. I have reverted my change, but then I have also put the original category up for discussion. We don't have any categories for books by authors from a specific country, so I don't know if people will want to keep this one. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:06, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! I can add more details on the discussion page. Also, if it's not too complicated, could you move all the categories with writer names from Category:Writers from Romania to a new category called Category:Writers from Romania by name? Luanlou (talk) 01:56, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
@Luanlou: Done. Check the category: if I moved any that don't belong there, go ahead and move them back. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:52, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
The new category looks good. Thank you! Luanlou (talk) 03:10, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Removal of category

Why did you remove the category? If it's based on Bobcat it should be in the category. Or? --|EPO| da: 17:54, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

@EPO: That category is a disambiguation category, which shouldn't be on any files. I didn't see anything in the image with the Bobcat brand on it. If I missed it, feel free to put the vehicle category on it. --Auntof6 (talk) 01:45, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
As others I failed see that it was a disambiguation category. However the ladder is built on a special bobcat base. I will find a more specific category. Keep cat'ing! --|EPO| da: 10:15, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

After Dark images category?

Hi thank you for (many years ago now) creating this:-

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:After_Dark

I have an interest in this category page (which to my shame I have only just discovered) as most if not all of the images originated with work I uploaded. Might you help me with a couple of no doubt straightforward questions (apologies for not knowing the answers: I have been editing for a while but only sporadically and have no "advanced" editing skills)?

i/ There was a period when only some of the images I uploaded to English Wikipedia had been moved to Commons, some were only on Wikipedia. How can I check if there are any left which have not yet made it across (a process which incidentally I have never understood how to do)?

ii/ Over the years I have uploaded other images (not connected with the tv programme After Dark) - how can I search for these?

Thanks again. AnOpenMedium (talk)

Just posted these questions to Help. 95.148.31.242 13:59, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Request

Please, can you solve this easy moving request: Category:Pfarrkirche hl. Petrus und Paulus, Birkfeld. I hope file mover rights should be sufficient to do this--Estopedist1 (talk) 09:04, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

@Estopedist1: Sorry, I can't do that one because the desired name already exists (as a redirect). --Auntof6 (talk) 00:39, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

Your revert

Hi, I'd happy if you could explain me your last revert. What do you expect there that wouldn't be a category? I'd really like to know. Thanks. --Birdie (talk) 09:41, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

@Birdie: I'm not sure I understand your question. Could you be specific about which revert you're referring to? Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:44, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
You removed "catcat" from [[category:Buildings in Arrondissement Château-Thierry]] with the commentary "Not a cat only category". --Birdie (talk) 09:47, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
@Birdie: Do you mean in Category:Buildings in Arrondissement Château-Thierry? If not, please specify which category you're looking at. If you mean that category, I removed the catcat template because there's no reason there can't be files in it. The category is a general one for buildings in the arrondissement: the category name doesn't specify any restrictions that wouldn't allow files. If you want, you could put {{Categorise}} on it. However, if you look at the categories for the other arrondissements, they don't have any such template. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:53, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
In France, contrary to the US, there's not a single part of the territory which doesn't belong to a "commune". So, every picture that would be put on "Buildings in Arrondissement..." should instead put in a "Building in commune x" category that would be a daughter category from "Building in Arrondissement...". Indeed, the other categories don't have the labels but, if you look at my work here, little by little, the parents categories I'm working on have just categories as daughters. Am I clear? --Birdie (talk) 10:02, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
@Birdie: I understand what you're saying. However, to be a metacat, the category name has to specify what the grouping is. In this category, it isn't communes, because there are also categories like Category:Churches in Arrondissement Château-Thierry. To be a metacat, the category name would need to be something like Category:Buildings in Arrondissement Château-Thierry by commune. I think the best that can be done with these is to use the categorise template. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:05, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Understood. So I guess I will treat them as a metacat w/o calling it one. I mean, trying to keep the categories clean of any picture w/o putting the label. It's such a steady work. You will have always ppl adding father cat even if it is nonsense. Like adding "cities in the USA" to an item already categorized as "cities in Colorado". I'd like to know why! Have a nice day, thank you for the explanation. --Birdie (talk) 10:18, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Administrator?

Hi, Auntof6. Do you want to become a Commons administrator? I can create a request for that, but I need your acceptance at first. Taivo (talk) 17:53, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

@Taivo: Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence to even ask me. I'd consider it, although I think there are some folks here who would hate the idea. As you may know, I am an admin on Simple English Wikipedia, so I know something about admin duties on Wikipedia, but I probably don't know as much about their duties here. Are they listed somewhere that I can look at? Is there a particular need for more admins right now? --Auntof6 (talk) 05:13, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Commons:Guide to adminship. Commons has constantly too few administrators and this year we got so far only one new admin, so I searched trusted users to propose adminship. More administrators are not needed for some special task, you can choose what you like, because there are different works to do. Even if you use your advanced rights only for deletion empty categories and redirects, that's also better than nothing. Taivo (talk) 07:34, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

QuickCfdClose Gadget

I've found closing CfDs to be a bit of an arduous multi-step process, so I started a gadget for streamlining the process. Since you participate in CfD frequently, I thought this might be helpful to you. Currently it only handles the closing of the discussion page itself, but when I have time I will expand it to some of the other repetitive tasks like removing the notification templates from the affected categories. See User:BMacZero/QuickCfdClose. – BMacZero (🗩) 20:38, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

@BMacZero: Thanks, I'll try it! --Auntof6 (talk) 22:20, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

Category:Irish Catholic bishops

Hi, you removed the Container template from this category. In my view, the two currents child categories represent 100% of the possibilities for the parent. One is either an Irish national who has served as a bishop abroad or one is a person who has served as a bishop in the island of Ireland. Do you see other possibilities? Laurel Lodged (talk) 07:34, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

@Laurel Lodged: To be a container category, the category name should somehow indicate the reason for that. For example:
The name "Irish Catholic bishops" doesn't indicate that things should be grouped any particular way. Things that could be included that wouldn't fit in the existing subcategories might be publications by or about Irish Catholic bishops in general, memorials to them, conferences they might attend, etc. It doesn't matter that the category doesn't currently have any of those things. What matters is that such things would fit in a category with that name. That's why I think this category could have files. To encourage people not to leave files in it, you could either put an explanatory note on it or use the {{Categorise}} template. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:23, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
Fair enough. Laurel Lodged (talk) 11:30, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Опитування щодо «Вікі любить Землю» 2020 / Wiki Loves Earth 2020 in Ukraine Survey

English version below

--AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (обговорення) 20:03, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi! You are getting this message because you have participated in Wiki Loves Earth in Ukraine before.

Organizers of the contest are holding a survey for participants to decide on whether to hold the contest this year — and when to do it. It seems that holding Ukrainian Wiki Loves Earth within traditional dates in May would not be reasonable because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, we can hold the contest in June or July. To decide, we need your opinion.

More info and the survey can be found by this link. The survey will be open by April 14th.

If you have any questions, contact us at wle@wikimedia.org.ua. Thanks! --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (обговорення) 20:03, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

Sri Lanka

Hello,

The trouble with your categorizing Sri Lanka the way you have, such as beaches, is that I cease to be able to continue to categorize them from the general "Sri Lanka" category. I'm not going to look into each of your categories to see if a new "beach" file belongs. That's ok though, because there are plenty of other files to categorize on the Commons and I will stop with Sri Lanka. Thankfully, you allowed "Pakistan" files to have general cats for a long time (e.g. lakes, rivers etc.) so that we could to assess files there. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 13:30, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Hilsenheim

Hi Auntof6, I've got a problem with user Ralph Hammann. He uploaded a picture (File:Hilsenheim rMuttersholtz 7.JPG) and keep on categorizing it as a church even if it's an orphanage. He reverted my change so I asked him why he was categorizing it this way, he never answered, just putting back his church category. What should I do as he refuses to answer? The fact he uploaded the file doesn't give him the right to put wrong categories, he should at least explain his choices when asked. Have a nice Whit Monday. --Birdie (talk) 18:29, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

BOT cannot handle Unitary Authorities- like Medway.

Unitary authorities seem to cause the BOT a lot of angst- and while vaguely amusing the damage is transfering to Wikidata. I have posted the following message on several pages, There is no such place as the borough of Medway. See Unitary authority for an explanation. Medway is the council, that for ceremonial purposes only, has connections with Kent. It is nor a borough like Dartford or Maidstone. Any bot chan-ges need to be reverted. Category:Schools in Medway (unitary authority) may be acceptable. The problem of what to name the new authority caused a lot of local anguish when the unitary authority was proposed in the late nineties- so I can see how the BOT got confused. It all needs to be reverted- or we need to change Schools in Kent to Schools in the Borough of Kent which is analogous (and not a proposal). --ClemRutter (talk) 08:11, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

@ClemRutter: I replied to this at Category talk:Schools in the Borough of Medway. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:12, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Photographs of Victoria of the United Kingdom

hi mister Auntof6 I am writing because I would like to ask you the reason why you have completely emptied the category of photographs relating to Queen Victoria. why did he do it ?? I ask because really when I saw this change I was really bad, because it almost emptied a whole category ????--ßrandërker (talk) 15:30, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

@ßrandërker: Categories with names like this one are supposed to contain only subcategories. They are not supposed to contain any files. That is mentioned in the note on the category. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:15, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Paintings by country

Hi Auntof6. You have made an edit that make sweeping changes to the way paintings by country are organised. Maybe you are not aware that there are at least three lines of categorizing paintings by country, being by country of origin, by country of location and by the depicted country. You seem to assume that this is just about country of location, but the World is not that simple. Please revert your edit. If you do not agree on the way paintings by country is set up, we have forums to discuss that, and your comments there will be welcome. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 07:11, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

@Rsteen: I am aware of that. Would you please give me an example of the edit I made that looked like I thought it was only country of location? Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:16, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi again: This one: Revision as of 06:25, 5 August 2020 by Auntof6 (talk | contribs) (removed Category:Paintings; added Category:Paintings by location). After that, users can not directly access Paintings by Country from the Paintings category - except by taking a detour around "location". And as stated, location is just one of the three dimensions in the category structure. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 10:37, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi again. Your lack of response indicates that either
a) You were actually not "aware of that".
b) You were aware of it, bút could not be bothered.
c) Some other reason?
The category system concerning "paintings by country" is still broken on account of your edit, so please revert it. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 11:10, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
@Rsteen: Thanks for the nudge. I have undone my edit.--Auntof6 (talk) 19:17, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for being so civil. The edit you undid was, however not the one in question. But assuming you meant to, the work has been done for you so this matter can be closed. Hope you agree. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 05:43, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
@Rsteen: Sorry. Next time, if there is a next time, it would help if you give a link to the diff instead of just giving the edit summary. But, yes, I'm fine with whatever you did. Cheers. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:30, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Adminship

Until your post at AN, I don't think I realized you weren't an admin. Should you ever desire the mop, I would be happy to nominate you. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 04:25, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

@Pi.1415926535: Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:50, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi Auntof6. I'd like to say that I am also pretty surprised you don't have the mop here, since you work so tirelessly in administrative areas. You may not want it, which is of course fine, but I think you could help commons significantly as an administrator :) --IWI (talk) 17:08, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
@ImprovedWikiImprovment: Thanks, IWI, but I have never believed that adminship should be looked at as the next logical step after being a good contributor. I've seen that over on simple too many times. The two things are very different. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:17, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
Yes I am in agreement there, but someone who like you who has spent so much time here doing administrative actions doesn't seem to be an example of that. I mean, your record here is beyond impressive. I think the project would actively benefit from it. Of course, there may be a whole number of reasons why someone might not want adminship, and that's perfectly fine. Just wanted to add my opinion. You have demonstrated that you know what you are doing, are kind, and will use administrative tools effectively, and in my eyes that is all that is required. Anyway, I hope you continue your great work here and elsewhere :) Kind regards, IWI (talk) 19:01, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello Auntof6, This category was deleted as were all the Spiral staircase categories. I noticed you added to it. To me "Spiral staircases" is needed and would be a help to Category:Staircases. But it seems I have to prove that this category is different from Category:Spiral stairs To me it is as many images were categorized because they had "Spiral staircase" in the file name. Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 14:50, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

@Krok6kola: I'm not sure what you want from me on this. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:44, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Привіт!

Category:Specific people who have died with COVID-19

Hi. How do you find this cat name? --E4024 (talk) 19:14, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

@E4024: "Specific people" sounds like the category would be for subcats only, and such a category would normally have a name like "People who have died with COVID-19 by name". However, this category contains individual files, so maybe it should just be called "People who have died with COVID-19".
Also, the preposition "with" indicates that the people had COVID-19 when they died, but it wasn't necessarily the cause of death. I don't think we have (or even need) categories like that, so we might want to say "from COVID-19" and make sure that that's what the included people died of.
Are you considering proposing a rename? --Auntof6 (talk) 21:05, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
No. I am hoping that you take the initiative. I'm afraid people are bored of my CfDs. Indeed do not even open a CfD (they remain for years without result) but just move it; and to your discretion. If anybody says anything I will defend you. Best. --E4024 (talk) 21:10, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

Literary paintings

Hi Auntof6. In a recent edit, you deleted the link between Category:Literary paintings and Category:Mythological paintings by subject. You probably had a reason for this, but you did not state it, which would have been a good idea when you are removing links, except when there has been an obvious error. The link was not an error. Yes, Literary paintings have their own subject in the system of paintings by subject, but they are not one of the 11 genres of paintings. So in order to make them fit into the genre system, it was necessary to make a link to mythological paintings (which is a genre). Because literature is a form of creating mythology. If you do not submit to this kind of reasoning, please state so - otherwise you are expected to revert your edit. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 17:20, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

@Rsteen: Sorry, I'll try to remember that -- I did state a reason on some other removals, such as this one. The reason for this removal was that not all literature is mythological. For example, Category:Literary paintings contains Category:Works of Shakespeare in paintings. Some of Shakespeare's works have mythological characters or themes, but not all (for example, Hamlet and Othello, which are both represented in the category). Since literature is not a subset of mythology -- in fact, the opposite is more true -- maybe literary works in and of themselves don't fit under genre -- or should be their own genre? Is it written somewhere that there are only 11 genres? --Auntof6 (talk) 19:47, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi again. Actually it does make sense to see literature as the creation of myths. This is just a broader definition of mythology - not specified as greek, roman, norse and so on, but mythology seen as based on "stories". In that way it fits, and it becomes possible to get to these paintings from the mythology genre. As to the 11 genres, they are (for instance) shown at the top of Category:Paintings by genre. The point is that some users swear to the genre system and expect to find paintings according to genres (as opposed to subjects). So, in order to make this possible, items are categorized so they fit into the genres. Literary paintings also did that - until you removed the link. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 15:13, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi again. Your lack of response may be seen as a sign of lack of interest in this subject on your part. However, it is important to other users, so for that reason the link you deleted has been restored. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 12:05, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

a category

I used this long standing category Category:Bodies of water by continent by country as a model. Isn't it wrongly named also? Thanks Hmains (talk) 05:13, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

@Hmains: I would say it's wrongly named, yes. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:44, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
I have now moved it. Hmains (talk) 15:01, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
and Category:Wetlands by continent by country seems to be another. There may be a whole collection of these. Hmains (talk) 05:14, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Sorry, do not understand this category. We already have Bible events categorised as such. Unless "reigious" is a word with which I am not familiar? Rodhullandemu (talk) 07:43, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

@Rodhullandemu: Sorry, I misspelled it. I have fixed the misspelling. Note, however, that there is more to being religious than being a Bible event/story -- baptism, eucharist, rosaries, etc., which are all represented in the subcategories. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:47, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Americas

But the distinction between North, South America and the Caribbean is just artificial. It's almost never used in most parts of the world out of the anglo-saxon world. There's even a template "countries of the Americas" that avoid this distinction. It's so artificial than a lot of people think Mexico belongs to South America. So, what's the point of supporting such a distinction when nobody until today thought that "works in North America" or "architecture in South America" should be existing categories? --Birdie (talk) 22:06, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

Category in/of

I know you do a lot of category work. What do you think on this? Should landforms/bodies of water generally use the 'of' word (as in 'lakes of foocountry') or the 'in' word (as in 'lakes in foocountry')? Is there any understanding or rule here in Commons as to what word is most appropriate for which categories? I am being beaten up over various changes I made to make things more consistent. Thanks Hmains (talk) 03:40, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

@Hmains: I believe there is a rule of some kind, but I don't know if/where it's documented or what the logic is. When I work in those areas, I just use whatever I'm seeing in most of the categories. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:11, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

THOU SHALT NOT COVID THY NEIGHBOURS LIFE WEAR A MASK

Hi Auntof6/Archives/2020

I don't visit here much, but came today to see if anyone can take a pic of a sign in front of a church located in Canada.

Can this image be uploaded here? https://www.gettyimages.ca/detail/news-photo/the-sign-at-knox-presbyterian-church-reads-thou-shalt-not-news-photo/1271020021 Alternatively, can some who lives close by ( New Westminster, British Columbia) take a pic.

Unfortunately, its such a busy place at commons, I cannot even figure out where to ask. You have been very helpful to me in the past and when I saw your name on recents I thought I would ask for your help and say hi at the same time. Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 00:28, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

@Ottawahitech: I can't take a picture of it myself, because I'm not in that area. The image is on a page that is copyrighted, so you can't upload it from there. There's some info on the page you linked about how the image can be used, but from my less-than-comprehensive understanding of licensing, it isn't consistent with what Common requires. So unless you can get the copyright owner to upload it, or give you permission to upload it in a form that Commons would accept, it can't be copied here. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:36, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for replying to my terribly confusing post above. Let me try again: what I am looking for is a page on commons where someone could ask others who live in a particular location to go out and take a picture and upload that picture so others may enjoy it too. In this particular case I find that the church itself, not the copyright holder who is trying to make money off the church's brilliant idea, deserves to get credit for it: but yes this is the state of the law.
I hope my post this time is a little clearer? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 17:18, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
@Ottawahitech: How about Commons:Picture requests? I hope the sign hasn't changed. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:14, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Ottawahitech has already posted on the North American sub-page there. I share your doubt that the opportunity may have passed: it’s been a couple of months since the Getty image was taken, and some churches change such signs every week.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:23, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: Yes, that's what I was thinking. The funniest one I've seen said, "It's too hot to keep changing the sign. Jesus good. Sin bad. Details inside." --Auntof6 (talk) 20:21, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Alleged overcategorizing

As I said in my first message, after distorting one city, please do not change the categorization system for a specific country. Not only you did not accept, but you also did the same for tens of other cities (now reverted). It has nothing to do with "overcategorizing", because there are differences between countries. For example, Paris use minimalist concept of eight major categories, while cities like Moscow, Warsaw or Berlin have 20, 30 or even 40 cats. In the specific case of Iran, there's a minimalist and highly standardized version of max. 12 cats per each city (e.g. Tehran), thus Iranian cities are probably the last "overcategorized" case among all countries on Commons. Only two cats are debatable, people and buildings. The first can be inserted into society, but as with most other cities in the world, it is also placed as the main one. The same thing is with buildings, where categorization is deeper: cultureartarchitecturebuildings. Many countries have architecture as the main cat, along with culture or art, and I don't know why. Italy has over 1300 such cases (compare Architecture of Italy by city & Art in Italy by city). Should we change it, with making some 2200 new art & culture cats? There are hundreds of similar examples all around the world. The reason why buildings in Iran's cities are placed as the main cat is that (1) they also include warehouses, shops and similar buildings, that do not belong to the art category, (2) without being major cat, their categorization is too much deep (as explained above), (3) buildings are one of the most recognizable elements of any city. --Orijentolog (talk) 03:16, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Elections in New York has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed.

Thank you!
