User talk:Amenhtp
Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 05:36, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Copyright Issues
[edit]It seems at least the last few images you've uploaded as "own photo" are quite easy to find elsewhere on the web via google, and not really yours. That to me is both uncool and unhelpful if in fact you're uploading photos found on the internet and calling them your own - just to avoid copyright policy. Please stop. - Owlmonkey (talk) 19:00, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
- Dear Owlmonkey,
- It seem to be I've made a missunderstanding from you. Several photo which your concerned has been released by P.R.C authority names "United Front Work Department" or original copy light owner has been demise.
- Please see the description of each photos.--Amenhtp (talk) 14:02, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for updating the attribution information. Do you have links showing where each photo is from then? I notice that the people's daily newspaper, for example, retains all copyrights on publications. Or do you have a link where the UFWD relinquishes copyrights as a general policy? I spent some time looking and couldn't find anything. - Owlmonkey (talk) 19:45, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Also, some of the images use the term "serf" in the image title. Use of the term serf is contentious. See the wikipedia article: Serfdom in Tibet controversy for some discussion on the topic and citations for why there is no consensus on use of the term, although propoganda sources like the United Front Work Department prefer that term they are a non-neutral source on this topic generally. Perhaps "peasant" or "poor" or similar are alternatives with more consensus. - Owlmonkey (talk) 20:09, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- I found an all rights reserved claim from 21cn.com (in Chinese) for this image: File:Tibetan_Head_Kapala.jpg, retagging it. - Owlmonkey (talk) 20:17, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Honoring Copyright
[edit]Don't upload images that you don't own and then claim them as your own. It's not only illegal but disrespectful to the image owners. Repeatedly ignoring this policy will result in a block or ban from editing wikipedia. - Owlmonkey (talk) 21:07, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Categorisation
[edit]Hi Amenhtp, copyright issues aside, thank you for your images, its been a pleasure to work with images that I have an interest in, however it appears that many images that you have uploaded have been done so without categorisation. Although its my pleasure to categorise images that make their way to the categories of files needing categorisation, files may get lost if they are uploaded without categorisation, and even if they become the subject of bot categorisation they may be miscategorised and become impossible to find (I found files you uploaded on pinfire cartridges bot categorised into containers). One of the problems with categorisation is that no suitable category exists in which case one can either create the relevant category or categorise into the most suitable category, however if this seems daunting there are simple things you can do to prevent the build up of uncategorised, poorly categorised and miscategorised images.
A case in point is your upload File:Short-Recoil pistols 1896-1911.JPG which provided all the information needed for quick and efficient categorisation. If you had followed the interwikis to the articles of the pistols illustrated. Going through the articles you would have found other pictures of the pistols and a Commons infobox which contains an interwiki link back to Commons which provides the location of the category that these pictures on Commons belong to. The same thing could be achieved by clicking on a suitable image and following the link back to Commons. By choosing the edit option on a suitable file you can then clone the correct categories and add them back to your own upload.
For articles which do not have files that link back to Commons, you could attempt to search for the topic or subject in the search box (after you have added your file to the article if possible). Often the search results will come up with files similar to your own, and if one is suitable again it is possible to clone relevant categories and add them to your own upload. KTo288 (talk) 09:18, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.
Thank you. This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it, ask its master (Filnik) or go to the Commons:Help desk. --Filnik 09:19, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

You uploaded a low quality version and the license was terrible wrong. The image is not public domain but licensed as GFDL/cc-by-sa by the copyright holder. --Martin H. (talk) 15:04, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:M1895Colt.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:M1895Colt.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
