Hello, Alpha Quadrant!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Rename requests without suggested target name

[edit]

Hello! Media with meaningless filenames should be renamed, yes, but to what? If you could not suggest a more descriptive file name, e.g. from the description, who will? There are many many such files, see for example Special:prefixindex/File:IMG just to name one common prefix. Best regards --MagnusA (talk) 10:22, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. RE rillke questions? 13:00, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that the PD-textlogo claim on File:Large WIBI.png was because someone added it and deleted the uploader's own license tag without discussion. I've given a longer explanation at File talk:Large WIBI.png. You may want to undo the speedy and the message on the uploader's talk page, as they seem to be a legitimate source for the file (though they may need to go through COM:OTRS). --Closeapple (talk) 20:54, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the speedy delete tag. The organization's website displays "All rights reserved", so I am not sure if the uploader had authorization to release the image. I will see if I can track down an email address for the organization and ask them to email OTRS with a confirmation. Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 21:25, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oops. Another one: From a little searching on the web, it appears that User:Stardeva23 is or was an employee of WJYS, is related to one of the authors of the logo, and would know the provenance of this work. I was the one that added PD-textlogo to it; see the edit history. I left the original license tags also, and as you can see from the edit history, I certainly did not intend for my additional claim to be the basis for a speedy delete rather than just having the tag removed. --Closeapple (talk) 21:13, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The status as PD-textlogo appears to be a bit far stretched. The image goes beyond simple geometric shapes and text. There doesn't appear to be any evidence that the uploader is the copyright holder. I'll see if I can find an email address for this organization as well. Eriophorum

[edit]

They are bad named images. It is not Eriophorum angustifolium but other species. See discusion and edit summary in these images.--Don Pedro28 (talk) 22:59, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I support Don Pedro in his effort. Next time, could you be more careful about reverting well-explained rename requests? --Vojtech.dostal (talk) 23:12, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If it is indeed wrongly identified, then you should say that. A generic "misspelled" does not explain that it is misidentified and implies that there is just a mere misspelling. His rename request was not well explained. Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 23:19, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alpha Quadrant, thanks for your application to be an image reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can review all kind of image licenses on Commons. Please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. Backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding them to your common.js:

importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source
importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

You can also add User reviewer or User trusted to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons!--Morning Sunshine (talk) 10:32, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome, Dear Patroller !

[edit]
Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi Alpha Quadrant !

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller ! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use you help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons. If you do not want it, just drop me a line. RE rillke questions? 20:21, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the flags. I will read up on edit patrolling, and I would be happy to help out with it. Best, Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 23:47, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Pay attention to copyright
File:Khobarstreetcollapse2.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Picasa

[edit]

Hello, saw your name on the list of Picasaweb reviewers. I have uploaded a number of images I found at Picasa over the last few days, and no one has gotten around to checking them yet. Naturally I understand this, (we're all volunteers) but I am also aching to use the pictures in articles, and having had many picasa files vanish before their licences could be established I was sort of hoping you may be able to help me out and give them the go-over. Thanks, Mr.choppers (talk) 07:50, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I would be happy to do the reviews. Best, Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 17:15, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Subincision by expert19612005 (4).jpg

[edit]

Good day. You tagged File:Subincision by expert19612005 (4).jpg with the {[tl|no permission since}} template. That template states: "This file is missing evidence of permission. It has an author and source, but there is no proof that the author of the file agreed to license the file under the given license." Since the uploader has stated that they are the author, and authors do not need to give permission to themselves, this template is clearly not appropriate to the situation of this file, so I have removed it. Thanks for your attention. -- Infrogmation (talk) 09:51, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Infrogmation, I was challenging the uploader's status as the creator of the image. Particularly given the relatively low resolution file and the watermarks. Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 15:59, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

about my pictures

[edit]

Hi Alpha Quadrant,

I see that you are renameing my pictures, and thank you for that. Some of them, were in some articles. After the renameing, those pictures will show in the articles? Or some bot will delete them from there? Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 15:53, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am sending requests for a universal replace to User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. The files will be globally renamed in a few hours. Best, Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 15:56, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! DenesFeri (talk) 15:58, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem. I will have the rest of the files renamed shortly. Best, Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 15:59, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
