First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Your deletion of CVU images

[edit]

Hi, why did you delete those images? You didn't even leave a remark on COM:DEL. I'am not sure why you're even an admin here... NielsF 23:42, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am very displeased of your deletion of the CVU logos which were used with the permission of the board. There was an ongoing discussion at COM:DEL that should be observed. --Cool out 01:01, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(a) The images were not "used by the permission of the board" and my attention was drawn to their unacceptable usage - indeed, the unacceptable usage of a lot of unauthorised derivative logos - via other routes. It is most likely that all such derivatives will be deleted in the near future; these just happened to be the first to go. The base of each edit page states "Copyright violations will be deleted!" and that is what has happened. (b) My apologies for not leaving a comment at COM:DEL. I did look down the list of images listed but did not spot these listed there. --AlisonW 11:06, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See angelas post on the mailing list.

There's no rush to delete them unless the Foundation does object to them...

The issue should be discussed before an action is taken since they do not necesarily violate copyrights (a violation is suspected). In the absance of Foundation objection, please undelete the images so people can see them while discussing them. This issue can't be handled simply handled at COM:DEL but instead on trademarks committee as we are talking about derivative works of wikipedia/wikimedia logos.
Thanks.
--Cool out 17:50, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Um, you are missing the points that have been made here and elsewhere about these invalid images. (a) They are *absolutely* violating Foundation copyright, and that copyright is and will continue to be enforced, and (b) As Angela has herself pointed out, whilst there was no defined status at the earlier point (when they were created) there very definitely is so now. 'Discussion' will not change their status as copyright violations: "isn't a reason to keep it forever". --AlisonW 18:29, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have restored these files in a safe way (nobody can embed them, should hopefully not create further potential legal problems) and made a usual deletion request, please see Template:Deletion_requests#Wikipedia:Counter_Vandalism_Unit_images for my reasons and contribute there. Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

Hello. Iv got a problem with this image. The famfamfam flag icons theme use filename like that "Image:Icons-flag-XX.png", and already got an european flag with unnormalised filename (the last one) : Image:Icons-flag-europeanunion.png. I just normalise all filenames, and since now i dont see this problem. I would like to rename Image:Icons-flag-europeanunion.png into "Image:Icons-flag-eu.png", but your file already exists. Are you agree to delete, or to move your file. I hope you agree :) I think the "official" image is more importante. Thanks a lot. ~ bayo or talk 01:33, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm easy with that if there is now an accepted standard. --AlisonW 15:27, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank a lot, i do the change ; no problem to revert if there are problems with it; because i dont think its an « accepted standard », i choose alone to change the name. Thank for your help. ~ bayo or talk 13:06, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

several new icons

[edit]

Hi Alison, I've uploaded several new icons, which won't show up in your list, 'cause you've mixed up the order of the modifying characters:

Image:BSicon extSTR.svg:
Image:BSicon extSTRq.svg:
Image:BSicon xtGRENZE.svg:
Image:BSicon etGRENZE.svg:
Image:BSicon extGRENZE.svg:

Due to the fact, that former stations and stops are displayed slanted automatically by Template ... the first character of the name has to be an 'e'! Greetings Axpde (talk) 15:15, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Axpde, just seen this. Not sure I agree with you about 'mixing up' the order as mainly my listings are just consolidating what is already created by others, but in this case as the BSe template is defunct on en:WP (precisely because it causes problems when just using the actual code for each individual icon does the same task) then the issue isn't quite the same. I've got to do another 'search for new icons' in the near future so I'll get these into the table where they don't already get picked up. --AlisonW (talk) 11:35, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

obsolete icons

[edit]

Hi Alison,

please delete File:BSicon SBHF1.svg and File:BSicon uSBHF1.svg from your list, checked and changed any occurance of those icons worldwide, now they aren't used anymore aside on your list. Thank you! axpdeHello! 20:01, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AlisonW!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

General note re rail icons

[edit]

Noting some of the above queries, a couple of points.

 1. The tables I generated some time back only display icons which actually exist.
 2. I don't need to be advised that an icon has been replaced, therefore, as it will disappear automatically
 3. I accept that icon codes will change over time. Thanks for thinking of me but don't waste the effort in telling me one I created has been replaced: thank you for the thought but change is good.

Tunnel version of BS icons of the category Icons for railway descriptions/set mixed

[edit]

Hi I saw that you made lot of BS icons.

Do you know how I can find a tunnel version of icons directly in this category ? I need one for a diagram.

Thank you for your help.--Kirikou (talk) 21:00, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AlisonW, did you shoot the original stroopwafel photo, used in this montage, by yourself? --Túrelio (talk) 08:56, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
