Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:48, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

File source is not properly indicated: File:Daggeroftime.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Daggeroftime.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
:File:Daggeroftime.jpg ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
As it is quite unclear whether this a screenshot or not. I seriously doubt it, for having played those games. Jean-Frédéric (talk) 19:49, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Ubisoft images
[edit]I apologise too for just tagging like this, I meant to come here to drop a few lines but I ended up just tagging around, sorry for that.
Ubisoft agreement is a great thing but it is quite unclear, indeed. I am still unsure about File:PoP2008 Prince-and-Elika.jpg, as it may be a screenshot, but in that case made by the website (not sure that this change something though).
As for File:Prince (8).JPG and File:PoP2008-Prince vs the Hunter.jpg, the danger is that these are press material, such as for Commons:Deletion requests/File:SplinterCellConviction.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:El Guerrero.jpg ; I'm not sure...
Anyway, thanks for spending time tranferring files from en: to here. As a user on fr.wiki, I can tell how precious those images are for us (and generally for other wikis). Jean-Frédéric (talk) 21:12, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- It's okay; I just didn't want anything to be deleted that wasn't supposed to. I'll probably be working on some other images soon, anyway, so this particular license shouldn't be a problem for me (and I'm really not all that great regarding copyright law, so it is probably a good thing to let somebody else work on it). --Drilnoth (talk) 21:59, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
This file was imported from en.wikipedia, as you can see in description. It was first published before 1883, because Beall died in this year. The autor of the photo ist unknown.. With kind regards Marcus (talk) 08:05, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Okay; first, en.wp is not a source in and of itself... the actual source is also needed. However, I can't tell what that source is. Specifically, do you know if it was published in a book or somesuch? I don't doubt that the image is old, but I'm pretty sure that a specific source is needed for to allow for verification of the image's license (at least on en.wp; it may be different here). That having been said, I do believe I may have made an error here; the image on Commons has more source information, specifically, a date, than the en.wp version which I saw first, after which I assumed the Commons image had the same description info. I will assume good faith that this image is appropriately PD and I will remove the tag; however, I would strongly recommend adding more info if possible. Drilnoth (talk) 02:12, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the lovely photo!

Thanks for uploading File:Magni.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Magni.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Permission to use figure in a book.
[edit]Dear Drilnoth,
I am working with Prof. Steven LaValle to help obtain permissions for borrowing figures or pictures in his upcoming book Virtual Reality, to be published by Cambridge University Press. The book is online here:
We are hoping to include the picture of yours:

in this book (Chapter 2, Figure 2.8b ). Could we please have your permission for this? Thank you.

- As it says at File:PlayStation 3 gamepad.svg, that image is available under the terms of the [Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication](https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en). While that most likely means that it is usable for the sort of thing you describe, I am not a lawyer so I won't guarantee that the use is valid. You should look over the license I linked to and consider any other potential issues with regards to using the image (such as trademark law, which might possibly apply to the controller design). -Drilnoth (talk) 04:57, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
