Timestamps
[edit]Hi, would you please add timestamps to the screenshots you've submitted for {{Licensereview}}? The {{From YouTube}} template documentation explains one way of doing it czar 20:44, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi Czar (again :)), that's a lot of work. I usually try and do a screengrab that includes the time indicator, but I think I may have missed this on some screengrabs. However there is discussion over whether commons is willing to accept that reputable organisations own the copyright of films they distribute. (e.g. here. So it looks as if we might have to abandon this idea. I have been trying to persuade organisations to add cc-by-sa to their websites. If we are not going to take their work for it then it certainly puts a hole in how I thought we were going to succeed. If you have time then can you tell me whether you think I am just wasting my time? Victuallers (talk) 09:14, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
I loaded this pic. This one is from NdaniTV. As you can see its a talk show that have been hosting. Its labelled up with Ndanitv and was shot with Nigerian celebs. On the picture you can see the time measure so you can see where it was in the video. But these are one-set videos so its pretty easy to see its the same vid from nearby shots. Do you agree that this is licensed cc-by-sa by a reputable source? I would appreciate your input Czar as I don't want this to be treated in a prejudicial way because its not made in Europe or the USA. cheers Victuallers (talk) 08:56, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hi, re: the repute of the YouTube channel, you can usually tell from the presentation. If it's an official channel, it will be linked directly from the company website, possibly have a theme or regular original content, and otherwise is distinguishable from user channels that repost without regard to copyright. (For example, most Western news sources do not freely license their reports, so they tend to be on YouTube without permission or proper license.) Without too much digging into your example to the right, yes, I'd review its license and don't see any prima facie reason to not accept that it's the official channel. With my original message, I only meant to suggest
{{From YouTube|aBAOF9TkErQ|#NDANIREALTALK - S1E4 - SHOULD A WOMAN DOWNPLAY HER SUCCESS TO KEEP A MAN?|t=1m30s}}
- YouTube: #NDANIREALTALK - S1E4 - SHOULD A WOMAN DOWNPLAY HER SUCCESS TO KEEP A MAN? (Time: 1m30s) – View/save archived versions on archive.org and archive.today
- instead of just the bare URL (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBAOF9TkErQ
) so that it's easier to verify the timestamp. (No need for the YouTube UI elements, as in the screenshot to the right.) By the way, you might be interested in this ticket for adding screenshot functionality to toollabs:video2commons. (Feel free to {{Ping}} to get my attention in the future.) czar 22:55, 28 August 2017 (UTC)- @Czar: Oh some automation would be useful. Re documenting info that is already there could easily be done by a bot. I have added the template as you suggested although one of us has made a type somewhere as it fails to be rendered. However I'm optimistic that you can come to decision about this file. Cheers Roger Victuallers (talk) 22:38, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
When you upload images from youtube, please consider giving the time of the image on the video clip as this uploader did here...for a future reviewer did here. I have very little time to go through a 15 minute clip sometimes. This is just a suggestion. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:41, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

USATF Championships 2018
[edit]Hi, I saw you are currently uploading some of the new USATF-pics from https://www.flickr.com/photos/37695693@N05/albums. I planned to do so too, so two questions from my side: Do you plan to import all pictures? And: Do you plan to add some more categories? (there already is Category:USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, so you could create Category:2018 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships an then subcategories like for example Category:2018 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships – Women's 100 meters. I could do that too of course, but would prefer to have all pictures from the four albums here first)
Thanks a lot for your answer.--Mondfeuer61 (talk) 10:48, 26 June 2018 (UTC)

What is the exact time code for this image from YouTube? The one you uploaded is corrupted and the time code you gave in the source is not correct per what does load. Could you please fix it or let me know the exact time you wanted and I'll fix it. Thanks. --Majora (talk) 19:41, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
@Majora: Oh dear - the time code was recorded at the bottom of the image, and that has failed to load. We have enough pictures of her so I suggest you speedy delete this as "below quality". Sorry to put you to to this. Is it easy to get the ability to delete my own mistakes? Victuallers (talk) 21:07, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
- Only administrators can directly delete images but if you are the uploader and you realize you made a mistake you can request that it be deleted by putting {{G7}} on the file information page. This generally only works if you realize and request delete within the first 7 days of uploading. After which it usually requires a DR but since this is a corrupted file I went ahead and tagged it. It shouldn't be a problem but I'll DR it if it is. Thanks. --Majora (talk) 21:13, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

I've fixed and reviewed these for you. The template {{From Vimeo}} only generates a link to the video; you still need to add a license template. License review for Jan Arkesteijn uploads
[edit]Hi, I have overwritten and redone the license review you added back in April for File:Mariana Gheorghe (2015).jpg (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs). The reason Flickrreview failed was because the image had been digitally changed, including the EXIF data. By overwriting with the digitally authentic original, the automatic review has now worked and I have made a recrop, keeping the colours authentic to the photographer's original choices.
As Jan Arkesteijn has been blocked for similar issues of misrepresenting original works, I suggest following a similar workflow if oddly coloured images from a different Flickr original come up. Thanks --Fæ (talk) 11:08, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Frustration with Wikimedia Editors
[edit]Hi!
Thank you so much for helping with Arcand's page and I certainly appreciate your positive thank you's!
I'm having issues with posting two images for Arcand and maybe you can provide assistance on how I can handle this. I'm so frustrated now.
I added Arcand's podcast from Subject Matter X to her Wikipedia page along with the accompanying image of Arcand that was on the podcast page. The image of Arcand and the podcast go hand-in-hand. Just like like a music CD you would purchase comes in a container with an image cover.
Here's the link to the podcast and you'll see Arcand's image on the Subject Matter X background. https://soundcloud.com/subjectmatterx/005-exploring-the-universe-with-nasas-x-ray-telescope
I was provided permission from Subject Matter X to use the podcast and they placed the Wikimedia Commons licence on their page with the podcast and image
- 005: Exploring the Universe with NASA's X-ray Telescope and Kim Arcand by Subject Matter X is licensed under a Creative Commons License.
On their page if you click on *Released by* than *Show More* you will see the license.
This is the license they used: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/
The Subject Matter X image is a combination of their background image and a image of Arcand placed on their image. I found out later that Arcand's image was taken by Brittanny Taylor.
A Wikimedia editor found Brittanny Taylor's Arcand's image on her Amazon page where she sells books and deleted the image immediately without notifying me. Here is the Amazon page with Arcand's image...same image on the Subject Matter X image
https://smile.amazon.com/Kimberly-K.-Arcand/e/B00DVO8B9Y/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_4?qid=1545497143&sr=1-4
They want Brittanny Taylor to provide permission to use the Subject Matter X image with Arcand's photo on it.
This second image issue is my own work, an image of Arcand that I took at the TEDx Providence event which I attended. I posted my own work of Arcand at TEDx on her Wikipedia page in her info Box, but now Wikipedia editor Patrick Rogel found this same image of Arcand that I took on Arcand's Facebook page and he has marked my own work for deletion and says I have a history of copyright violations. The history is two images, one of my own work at TEDx Providence and the Subject Matter X image.
Here are two links of the two images I posted (one which is my own work) marked for deletion:
As I was typing this message, I'm being told by Wikipedia editor Patrick Rogel that Facebook images are not FREE and I need to place a license on my Facebook page where I posted Arcand's image at TEDx
This image of Arcand that I took was posted on NASA's Chandra X-ray website with credit on this page...scroll down to 2nd image.
http://chandra.si.edu/blog/node/607
I'm so frustrated and stressed out now that I no longer want to contribute to Wikipedia.
Thank you for your time, support and understanding.

Hi Victuallers,
After I just replied to your kind response on my user talk page, I found while I was writing my reply message to you that my image of Arcand at TEDx providence is tagged deletion again by Patrick Rogel. Jeff G. wants me to upload the original image again. Below is what transpired.
File:Kimberly Kowal Arcand at TEDx Providence Rhode Island.jpg I withdrew my nomination too early. Permission was not given at all; user just added a message to the Facebook account. Patrick Rogel (talk) 17:08, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
@Tracykarin: Can you upload or point us to an online copy of the original 5,472 × 3,648 px photo? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:31, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
Roger and Jeff,
This is getting ridiculous...really! This is my own image, my own work. My personal camera data was uploaded along with the original image.
Show me a Wikimedia Common rule that I'm violating.
I feel this is just plain harassment.

Hello, can you please clarify the source and its original publication date ? I found this which is not very clear. Thanks, — Racconish 💬 11:15, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi I've sharpened the date of filming by 3 days. Publication date is unclear. Youtube source is interesting but as you say unclear. I'm going with the source I gave which is much more clear and was the one I used. Not sure why you feel the free use is in doubt. Victuallers (talk) 17:05, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- As you probably know, the fact you - or Magnus Gertten and Jesper Osmund - don't know who the director is is not a sufficient proof he is anonymous. On the other hand, the producer of film has a neighbouring right computed from the first publication date, which makes the latter important to establish. In the absence of these informations, we cannot unfortunately claim the work is PD just because we don't know enough. — Racconish 💬 17:19, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Emma McClarkin MEP at Vista.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File copyright status
[edit]Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. While everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the project, one or more of your recent file uploads had missing or false information regarding its source and copyright status. Please note that Wikimedia Commons takes copyright rules and infringement very seriously. Files may only be uploaded and included if their copyright status meets the conditions stated in our licensing policy, and if their provenance is clearly documented. Files that fail to meet those conditions may be deleted, and users who fail to meet them may be blocked. Please follow our first steps, if you haven't already. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the Village Pump copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:25, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

some wrong file names and descriptions
[edit]Hi, there are some problems with some of the files you uploaded a few days ago:

- File:Kristiane Backer Sophie Walker Jillian Kowalchuk Farai Mabaiwa David Mahoney & Helen Pankhurst.jpg
- File:Two and Helen Pankhurst.jpg
- File:Farai Mabaiwa et al.jpg
- File:David Mahoney Kristiane Backer Sophie Walker Jillian Kowalchuk Farai Mabaiwa and Helen Pankhurst.jpg
Unfortunately, the descriptions and filenames mentioned the people in the wrong order. Not your fault, because the original Flickr description was already wrong. I'd say the people on this picture are (from left to right):
- David Mahoney
- Kristiane Backer (cf. her official website)
- Jillian Kowalchuk (cf. Google)
- Helen Pankhurst (cf. en:Helen Pankhurst)
- Sophie Walker (cf. Google)
- Farai Mabaiwa
Also, you extracted some new files from these files:
The names are mixed up, too. The first picture depicts Walker, the second Backer (and since she's the only one depicted, the "et al." is a bit confusing ;-) ). Could you please correct the file names, descriptions and ideally also file usages? Regards --Schniggendiller (talk) 22:01, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Poppy Northcutt image
[edit]Hi there, I saw you added a photo of Poppy Northcutt to the Commons that was sourced via an image from the United Nations' Twitter account. The rights this image, as far as I'm aware, are held by a stock photo agency, as is not necessarily a NASA publication. Can you please double check to make sure the licensing info is correct? Fairly certain this is not in the public domain, and therefore not eligible for inclusion on Commons, but I'd be thrilled to be wrong. Thank you! Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2019!
[edit]Hi
Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.
Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).
We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.
The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.
Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.
Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs ([[User talk:MichaelMaggs|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Better YouTube screenshots
[edit]First of all, thanks for all the work you do uploading images!
I've noticed that you tend to upload YouTube screenshots that still have the interface in them. If you're comfortable using the command line, it's not too difficult to get a higher-resolution photo without the interface. Once you've found a particular video and a particular timestamp, you can use youtube-dl
to download the highest-resolution version of the video on YouTube. Then, using ffmpeg you can run ffmpeg -i video file -ss start time -t duration frame-%d.png
to extract the frames from a given timestamp in seconds for a specified duration (i.e. from 0:32 to 0:33 would be -ss 32 -t 1
). That will give you a bunch of frames from which you can pick out the exact right one in full resolution.
You may have seen that I've been going through old uploads and adding new versions with the interface removed using this method; I'll probably continue to do that until I get bored of it. Vahurzpu ([[User talk:Vahurzpu|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 16:47, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
