Turn of the century/decade
I was cleaning up Category:LangSwitch template without English version and noticed many files reaching template expansion limit when trying to create terms like "late 1990s and early 2000s" or "early 19th century and early 20-th century" with current templates phrases like that require 5 calls to {{Other date}} (see for example File:Georgian prince Andronikashvili.jpg). This has 3 problems: it is hardly readable code, it does not work due to template expansion limit and is likely incorrect in many languages. In order to fix it I introduced in {{Other date/sandbox}} 3 new options: "turn of the century", "turn of the decade", and "turn of the year". Please add a few more translations (and test them using {{Other date/testcases}}) before I move it to {{Other date}}. --Jarekt (talk) 15:21, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
- I want to note the same proposal. (File:LetnaLanovaZarez.png, turn of 19/20th century). --ŠJů (talk) 14:35, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- I added "turn of the century", "turn of the decade", and "turn of the year" to the main template. --Jarekt (talk) 15:34, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thank You. I think, in case of photos etc., the conjuction mostly should be "or" instead of "and". --ŠJů (talk) 16:51, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- The turns do not work very well for BC dates, e.g. “late 921 and early 922 BC” from the doc subpage is nonsense. (Not that I’d like the template to become even more complicated than it already is, just saying.) --Mormegil (talk) 20:01, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- I can not image cases we would need that phrase for BC years, but it you think we should fix it what wording would you suggest? --Jarekt (talk) 20:19, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- For turn of the year: “late 922 and early 921 BC” – and the same way for decades and centuries. Dustsucker (talk) 01:45, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Fixed --Jarekt (talk) 03:37, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- Shouldn't it be "or" rather than "and" ? The most likely use I see is for images whose exact date is unknown. --Zolo (talk) 08:58, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- The origin of those options was the fact that it took >=5 {{Other date}} templates to create them and they were reaching template expansion limit. The cases I was fixing all use "and" since they usually refer to a period of time (work period) and not a specific event like birth or death. I know that sometimes we need "and" and sometimes "or", but I feel like "and" works is less of a mismatch for birth/death than "or" for time period. One possible fix is to use the phrase "turn of the 19/20th century" or something similar. --Jarekt (talk) 13:26, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- Yes "/" is probably the best solution. For BC dates, if there are no backward compatibility problems, I think it would be clearer to shift centuries by one. That is turn of the
{{other date|century|4|era=BC}}
should give turn of the "5/4th century" rather than 4/3 (more recent century given in the template as for AD dates)--Zolo (talk) 10:35, 26 January 2012 (UTC)- That would be fine, we just have to document it well. --Jarekt (talk) 12:39, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Early, mid, late, 1half and 2half for centuries and decades
{{Editprotected}}
Hi! Is it possible to implement "early", "mid", "late", "1half" and "2half" parameters also for centuries and decades? So dates such as "early 20th century" or "late 1990s" would be possible. Nesting templates like {{other date|early|{{other date|century|20}} }}
doesn't work for all languages. So we probably would need separate parameters like "early-century" and "early-decade". ––Apalsola t • c 08:49, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
- Use the edit protected template when you have an actual change that you want made. If you don't have clear-cut code, to add please don't request an edit. This is too widely used for us to be playing with. – Adrignola talk 19:34, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with Apalsola that nesting {{Other date}} templates does not work in all the languages; However I do not think adding more many more parameters is the correct solution. It would also not solve problem with pages already using nested templates. I guess one solution would be to redesign the template to use parameter "units" to "early 20th century" would be written as {{other date|early|20|units=century}}. Any other ideas? --Jarekt (talk) 19:48, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
- If it could be designed in a way that nesting is possible we would easily support many languages with translated dates. Maybe the grammar is not very good in some cases - but isn't it "good enough"? I do only know for English and German. Not sure how it will be in other languages. --Saibo (Δ) 23:10, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

- Not sure if nesting is actually a good idea. Maybe
{{other date|early|century|20}}
could be made to work. -- Docu at 07:17, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Millennium
May we have 'millennium' as well as 'century'? It would be very useful for ancient artefacts. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 15:46, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

{{{1}}} parameter "century" gives century in German?
Hi, I've observed that the parameter "century" gives back "century" and not "Jahrhundert" which would be correct. Did this template meet some kind of mishap? Greetz! Bukk (talk) 17:32, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- It was an error introduced by a new option. Should be fixed now. --Zolo (talk) 17:43, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you! Greetz! Bukk (talk) 18:28, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- I was getting just the word "century" with no number from the new code, so I've reverted it for now. Kaldari (talk) 05:50, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
- We will need to find a way to fix it. Many images from Category:Media contributed by the Walters Art Museum use {{Other date|century|xx|yy}} construct which was supposed to show as xx-yy century but now shows as xx century. --Jarekt (talk) 16:20, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- Kaldari, do you remember which file did not work ? I seems to work fine for me (there may be some problems with depth limit, but I think it should be okay for English)--Zolo (talk) 16:41, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- I also suspect issues with with depth limit. May be it only breaks when nested with other {{Other date}} templates, line "early 19th century". --Jarekt (talk) 17:30, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- I isolated the problem in Template:Other_date/testcases#More_test and although new addition works just fine by itself (See 'century' in the top) table, it fails with the nested template test. I am not sure if there is an easy fix here other than build a new template with mostly named parameters that looks more like {{Technique}} and which we would not have to nest. That would also solve the problem that the nesting does not allow for proper translations in many languages. --Jarekt (talk) 11:56, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Displaying an error message
If an incorrect input is used (e.g. {{other date|2011|spring}} instead of {{other date|spring|2011}}), there is an empty output. I suggest displaying an error message such as “Incorrect input, see Template:Other date” — maybe even in red — in these cases. This would allow the user the fix it him-/herself rather than people having to clean up Category:Pages using Other date template with incorrect parameter often. --Leyo 09:26, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
- An incorrect 1st paramater categorizes in Category:Pages using Other date template with incorrect parameter. As I wrote this thre was just one page there, so it seems that it is not so much of a problem. But I am fine with adding an error message.--Zolo (talk) 06:22, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
date notations with two dates
What is the difference between "–" and "between"? I thought "between" is used when the exact date of a photograph is unknown, but why is there a further parameter "–"? Should "–" be used for files that are (for example) works of art and does it then signify the time period in which this work has been made?--Leit (talk) 08:36, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- The simplest explanation would be to compare the outputs of "–" and "between" in a language of your choice (German?) , see Template:Other_date#date_notations_with_two_dates. The "between" should be used for single point in time events like births and deaths. The "-" should be used for continuous events like workperiod, etc. --Jarekt (talk) 12:31, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- "–" means bis in German what can also be a synonym of "between". My question is actually whether "–" can be used as in this file where an exact date is unknown (but such a date exists).--Leit (talk) 13:02, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- I think both "–" and "between" are fine for {{Information}} or {{Artwork}} "date" fields. I see them both used. It makes more of the difference in {{Creator}} template. --Jarekt (talk) 13:27, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- Well, to me "–" signifies a period in which something has been produced – in this case, the painting (the process of painting) of "Schloss Duncker" began in 1857 and ended in 1883. In fact, the painting (the process of painting) occured maybe in June 1861, maybe in February of 1876 and so on.--Leit (talk) 13:40, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

circa between or between circa
"other date|circa|1900|2000" translates into "circa between 1900 and 2000". It would be grammatically more logical if it would translate into "between circa 1900 and circa 2000". Is that feasible? Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 19:07, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
