Let's be nice
[edit]It's important to be nice. This template currently uses words like "warning" (what about "notification"?) and has an angry red border (what about a calmer grey or green?). It tells the person that their file will be deleted, without reassuring them that their contribution is greatly valued.
I have seen several cases of people going absolutely ape-shit after receiving one of these warnings. Let's make it more diplomatic. — Erin (talk) (FAQ) 02:06, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know what the word "warning" sounds like for a native speaker of English. For those whose English isn't so good, warning is a more known and common and more understood word. I'd like to change notification back to warning if that is ok. -Samulili 15:06, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- My personal opinion is that the older one got the job done in a more professional way. / Fred Chess 12:34, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I think that bluntness sounds more professional, and I like to be blunt, but I like to be nice too, and I notice a lot of people getting offended when their pix go up for deletion. Diplomatic wording is unfortunately necessary. Also remember that this template is not used in the main namespace, but only on user talk pages, which are generally unprofessional places not on public display in quite the same way as articles, categories, image description pages, etc. — Erin (talk) (FAQ) 13:11, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- I just noticed that this has been changed. It's very sweet, I like it. :) Will be funny to see on a serial copyvio offender's talk page, though. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:57, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Now, almost a year later, I admit that the wording is nice and has not lead to any problems as far as I know. Thank you, Erin. / Fred J 22:03, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Heading
[edit]Shouldnt this template include a heading like eg. ==:Image:Imagname.extension==?/Lokal_Profil 20:03, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- You mean it should link to the image in question? It does. — Erin (talk) (FAQ) 23:23, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- No, what I meant is that it should create a new section with eg. the above as a heading. As it is now many people just use the template which then gets sorted in the TOC as being part of the prior section./Lokal_Profil 23:39, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- Oh yes, I apologise for my misunderstanding. — Erin (talk) (FAQ) 01:23, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- Looks good =). Should also point out that this is probably the best worded warning template I've seen (not only for images) on the wikipedia projects I've visited. If there were such a category as featured template I'd nominate it =) /Lokal_Profil 01:32, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- Oh yes, I apologise for my misunderstanding. — Erin (talk) (FAQ) 01:23, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- It does not any more link to the image in question, thanks to this edit. I can understand boldifying the references to the image in question, but why remove the links? I frequently use those links, for example from a user talk page I'm watching to an image that user had involvement with, and removal of those links has put a speedbump in my path, so I respectfully request that they be put back. If not both, at least one? Thanks! — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:25, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- This is also adversely affecting DRBot's ability to recognize Idw postings, causing it to make unwanted duplicate postings[1][2]. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 22:48, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- What exactly breaks the bot? My edits were intended to be minor trivial cleanup. I did not want any bot to break. :/ -- Cat chi? 06:29, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

- I don't know exactly, you'd have to ask Bryan. My guess is that the change from link to bold in the heading broke it (given that what the bot creates still has the link). That would be my first choice of what to partially revert to try to stop the broken behavior. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 10:51, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- It was in fact the edit before that. I have reverted this temporarily, until I am able to fix the nominate-for-deletion script. -- Bryan (talk to me) 18:20, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Since when do we delete old versions of images?
[edit]I am bemused by the phrase "If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file". I am under the impression that we don't delete older revisions of images, we like to keep all the revisions as a history, so is "superseded by a superior derivative" is an unlikely scenario --Tony Wills 09:01, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Broken bulk request
[edit]The intention was probably good but it broke the deletion template on the image page. Eg if you go to Image:Torpedo-werke-ffm-roedelheim.jpg and see point 4 in template it says Notify the item's uploader or the creator of the page by placing the following code on their talk page: --~~~~ but with the change, that didn't work. I have therefor reverted the change. / Fred J 17:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
Translators' help
[edit]This notification should explain that discussions are held in English, and it should give some help for finding translators, for example at the local Village pump. Should this be included at the template, or as a note for the translated versions in other languagues? --V.Riullop 13:11, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- There is no "English-only" policy. ViperSnake151 (talk) 15:03, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
multiple files -- header comes out odd
[edit]When notifying a user of a mass deletion request, the first parameter, instead of being a filename, is a description of the files being nominated. Since that text is used as a section header, however, it comes out looking not right.
Please see User talk:DineshAdv#:Your+Cars+images for an example.

Moving
[edit]I would propose to move this template to Template:Dw. It just doesn't make sense to give someone an "image deletion warning" for galleries, categories or templates. The deletion requests aren't image only, and thus this should be named "deletion warning" to cover the other namespaces as well. Thoughts? --The Evil IP address (talk) 12:18, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Romanian translation
[edit]Editprotected Hello, I created a Romanian language (Română) translation for this template: Template:Idw/ro. I would appreciate if someone would add the link to the language list.—Andrei S. Talk 13:34, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Done. (FYI, the language links are at Template:Idw/lang, which is also protected). --The Evil IP address (talk) 13:46, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
Heading logic
[edit]When nominating multiple files which do not comprise everything a given user has uploaded, the heading "All your images" suggested on COM:MASSDEL doesn't really make sense. However, currently using anything but that "magic" heading (or an empty string) results in the heading being turned into a (red) link. Instead of the current klugy comparison with "All your images", it would make more sense for the template to be changed so that the heading is turned into a link if and only if either
- the page that it would link to exists at the time the template is applied, or
- the third parameter ("plural") is not given,
or some combination thereof. However, it seems that the current logic is also hardcoded in Template:Idw/heading/en (and the other such subpages), and changing those templates isn't as easy since they're not substed. I'm too tired to try to fix it right now, but if anyone can think of a good way to do it without breaking all existing transclusions of the heading, please do so. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 21:20, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Doc
[edit] should become documentation

Slovene translation
[edit]Hi, I ask for someone to include the translation to Slovene, created at . Thanks a lot. --Eleassar (t/p) 10:28, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- Done. You might also want to translate the header: create Template:Idw/heading/sl by translating Template:Idw/heading/en. Rd232 (talk) 11:00, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Created Estonian translation, but it needs work
[edit]Created Estonian (et) translation, but there are some problems, which is why I am not going to request linking to it yet.
The issue is related to declension in the use of Template:PageNamespace (which I left in, just in case), where in some phrase forms the case for 'Lehekülg' ('Page') and 'Pilt' ('Image') becomes genitive in two locations:
- With word Page
Page deletion warning —
- Wrong and current: Lehekülg kustutamise hoiatus
- Correct: Lehekülje kustutamise hoiatus
If you created this page ...'
- Wrong and current: Kui Sa lõid selle lehekülg ...
- Correct: Kui Sa lõid selle lehekülje ...
- With word Image
Image deletion warning —
- Wrong and current: Pilt kustutamise hoiatus
- Correct: Pildi kustutamise hoiatus
If you created this image ...'
- Wrong and current: Kui Sa lõid selle pilt ...
- Correct: Kui Sa lõid selle pildi ...
Template:PageNamespace text interferes with text in Template:Idw/en, where in much of English-language text, PageNamespace text was in Estonian, so I decided to create an Idw/et translation for the sake of some consistency. -Mardus (talk) 02:41, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Parameter passing
[edit]When used with autotranslate on talk pages, clicking on the language option results in a translated box that does not have any of the original parameters such as the filename in question. See Commons:Village_pump#missing_if. --Tony Wills (talk) 11:49, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Chinese translation
[edit]I found it didn't fit well whens plural is used. --John123521 (talk) 14:01, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Issue with post-expand size
[edit]A significant amount of user talk pages currently end up in Category:User talk pages where template include size is exceeded.
If you try this template in Special:ExpandTemplates, you will note it currently produces a large amount of wikitext because of the language links at bottom.
I would suggest replacing all these links with a single link (using an [[universal icon), pointing to an "entry point" page, which would in turn contain links to all the translations.
Od1n (talk) 13:33, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- Some additional notes:
- Same issue with a lot of other templates: Template:Image license, Template:Image permission, just to name a few.
- The solution advertised on the category page (archive the page, then split the archive, then why not split the slices of the archives) is really a poor man's solution. The issue is that the expanded templates are too large, the proper fix is to solve this.
- These templates are expected to be substed, but how are we supposed to do that, as they are used through a parent template Template:Autotranslate. I did a few attempts without success.
- Independently of the "post-expand size" issue, the amount of HTML generated is also a performance issue, when such templates are used dozens of time on a page.

Burmese Translation
[edit]Edit request The Burmese translation for this template has been created at . Please add. Thank you. Ninja✮Strikers «☎» 04:54, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- Like with Template talk:Image permission#Burmese translation, this works without any changes to the base template as far as I can tell. No edit request necessary :) --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 21:46, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. It works. Ninja✮Strikers «☎» 18:43, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
By just clicking anyone language name link, the second link may be broken
[edit]e.g. by clicking the Armenian (հայերեն) one, I can see
“ | ...կարծիքը հայտնեիք դրանց էջում: | ” |
Is this fix-able? If not then probably we need to modify documentation? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 07:07, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
