Non-removal of :File:…

[edit]

@Grin: Can the bot be configured not to delink the text links (with the ":File:" prefix) like it did in the second and third changes in this edit?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:17, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, unfortunately I had to became inconveniently familiar with its internals, so I can make larger changes now. I will check your sample and discuss it with the bot in private. :-) grin 12:55, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Pending

(after review) it would require a complete rewrite of the replacement routines. It is still sitting on the ToDo list. (Right now the bot would replace deleted_image.png from the flowing text as well, probably went unnoticed for the last decades.) -- grin 15:26, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of image which was apparently not deleted

[edit]

What happened here? That discussion has not yet been closed with a deletion rationale, nor have the files been deleted. PseudoSkull (talk) 22:18, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@PseudoSkull: Looking at the logs for that image, it was briefly deleted and then restored.[1] CommonsDelinker was active during the time that the image was deleted. From Hill To Shore (talk) 23:12, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Failure to remove a part of a caption

[edit]

In [2], there were two wiki links in one caption text. Delinker cut it at the end of the first link and left the rest. @Grin: whym (talk) 04:27, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I will look into this hopefully within a week. It is not a generally occuring phenomenon but definitely needs fixing. Thanks for reporting! grin 18:34, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This one was a pain in the back, but I believe it has been fixed. It was caused by non-latin characters sticking to the ]] closing part. I hope it won't break Assamese or other exotic scripts... fingers crossed. :-)
Thanks again for reporting! grin 20:57, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed thanks again! grin 15:28, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Feature Request for CommonsDelinker

[edit]

@Grin: Hello,

would it be possible that the bot Commons Delinker in galleries not only simply removes the image addresses (like here), but also sets the perrow value in the gallery class one down?

LG, Dwain 14:53, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Uh... unfortunately no. The problem is that the bot is not able to change any contextual (surrounding) code, it is specifically written in a way that makes this quite impossible to implement, without rewriting large chunks of the code. In my far-reaching dreams I would really like to rewrite it, since I passionately dislike the way it's written [it has been created in the foggy mist of past ages] but I don't see a good chance for this to be happening in the near future, I had to find a lot of time and motivation for that. grin 09:14, 19 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bug report

[edit]

Hi @Grin: ! Thank you very much for your time developing and maintaining CommonsDelinker bot.

I noticed while checking broken gallery tags some bot edits which are breaking the gallery tags in the case the closing gallery tag is in the same line that the last image file.

Some examples:

I found them in this report in case you need more cases: https://checkwiki.toolforge.org/cgi-bin/checkwiki.cgi?project=eswiki&view=only&id=29

Thanks again. JavierMunozF (talk) 21:34, 29 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ouch. I will look into it but it would be really great if the closing tag would be on a separate line. It is getting guesswork pretty fast if the bot have to analyze the image comment whether it's something else than a comment.
Thanks for the report! grin 11:04, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed this resulted a really ugly part in the bot code, but I believe it works now as you imagined. Ping if it it isn't. grin 16:07, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bug report: fragment left if caption text includes wikitext

[edit]

Example:

This bug has already been reported multiple times at https://bitbucket.org/magnusmanske/commons-delinquent/issues since July 2022: 2022-07-30, 2022-10-15, 2022-10-16. Wotheina (talk) 14:54, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I had to ping @Grin: I found other examples of this bug, even in someone's user page ja:Special:Diff/92076088. --Wotheina (talk) 15:56, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How have you ended up on that bitbucket page? Would be good to know what links there, it's been abandoned for years now...
As for the problem: I'll try to check it, unfortunately it needs more time that I was able to squeeze out of life. I'm on it... grin 22:47, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the bitbucket page: ja:Special:Diff/92140354 provides 2 links.
  1. ja:User:CommonsDelinker (ja:Special:Permalink/78739641 was what I saw) which is a traslation of meta:User:CommonsDelinker. They both say the maintainer is :commons:User:Magnus Manske (which now hints nothing about CommonsDelinker) and link "bugtracker" to https://bitbucket.org/magnusmanske/commons-delinquent/issues. :commons:User:CommonsDelinker also instructs "See m:User:CommonsDelinker..." as the main page. Not only meta, enwiki and jawiki, but probably tons of wikis point to bitbucket, such as fr:Utilisateur:CommonsDelinker and hu:User:CommonsDelinker. Many others may point to Siebrand or Magnus Manske, such as de:Benutzer:CommonsDelinker and zh:User:CommonsDelinker.
  2. ja:User talk:CommonsDelinker leads to :commons:User talk:Siebrand which shows nothing relevant. :commons:User:Siebrand again points to meta:User:CommonsDelinker.
Among all, this page (:commons:User talk:CommonsDelinker) is by far the most unreachable. --Wotheina (talk) 06:30, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have updated the meta and commons pages. Thanks for specifying them. grin 16:37, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Grin: : Good. I suggest further improvements on meta:User:CommonsDelinker:
  1. At the top of the page, there is a big table with the link "bugtracker" to bitbucket. Many people (like me,) would click that. I suggest it be rewritten too to |Feedback: [[:commons:User talk:CommonsDelinker]]
  2. In the "Feedback" section, avoid the pipe and explicitly show that the link will lead to commons, not meta: [[:commons:User talk:CommonsDelinker]]. It is unintuitive to not use the talk page on meta and jump to a different site, so we'd better make our readers aware about that.
  3. The repositories for the obsolete source codes are still alive, so strikeout is not needed.
--Wotheina (talk) 13:39, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Ok.
  2. I disagree.
  3. I disagree, the code is outdated and not maintained, someone may get the wrong impression that it has any relation to reality. The link is still readable (that's why I haven't removed it) provided someone feels the need.
grin 15:41, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed It has been fixed probably around the end of 2022 by fixing related problems. grin 16:43, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Image border of deleted image at English Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello. I notice that after a image was deleted in the infobox at People's Progressive Party (Nepal) on the English Wikipedia, the image border remains. I was wondering if CommonsDelinker can remove the image border as well when an deleted image is removed on English Wikipedia or elsewhere. Thanks! MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 01:14, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If I see correctly the previous syntax using "{{!}}border" was removed since, so I hope this could be left as it is. grin 16:49, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Recover previous files from article history?

[edit]

@Grin: , can CommonsDelinker be leveraged to revert linked files to status quo ante based on the article history, assuming that the previous file is still accessible and usable? Elizium23 (talk) 18:21, 19 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There is a pending request to actually implement automagic revert of image removal but not in the general case. This is a two-step request:
  1. implement code to process removal reverts from a page and process them (which basically means verifying that the removal was made by Delinker, verifying that the image does exist again and that there was no changes on the given page since, and if it's so revert);
  2. figure out the administrative process to limit possible harm.
I am still trying to find time to implement #1 but it's slowly getting there; the revert code is basically ready but it's not ready for public use just yet. grin 09:15, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Very inefficient database queries

[edit]

Hi! I noticed that the commons-delinquent Toolforge tool is performing very slow database updates like this:

update `event` set done=0,note='' where note like '%edit conflict%' and done=2;

There's an index on done, but there are about 12 million rows with done=0 so the filter on note ends up rather slow. The EXPLAIN for these queries looks like this:

MariaDB [(none)]> EXPLAIN SELECT * FROM s52421__commonsdelinquent_p.event WHERE note like '%rate limit%' and done=2;
+------+-------------+-------+------+---------------+------+---------+-------+---------+-------------+
| id | select_type | table | type | possible_keys | key | key_len | ref | rows | Extra |
+------+-------------+-------+------+---------------+------+---------+-------+---------+-------------+
| 1 | SIMPLE | event | ref | done | done | 1 | const | 6190877 | Using where |
+------+-------------+-------+------+---------------+------+---------+-------+---------+-------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

Could something be done about these? Taavi (talk!) 19:53, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have restricted the select to today()-7 days (which uses index on timestamp), that'll be much better. (This code wasn't done or touched by me.) Thanks! grin 19:33, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please avoid talk page notifications

[edit]

This bot generated a notification that someone edited my talk page in ptwiki, I was trying to discover who left me a message and only when I saw the page history I noticed that was this bot changing a file link, it is annoying. It should use the minor edit flag to avoid that, minor edits don't generate talk page notifications. Danilo.mac(discussão) 15:57, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The bot apologises for causing notifications. The same time it helps you to realise that your page has been changed by external entities, which is desirable. grin 19:35, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Filename wasn't changed in some instances

[edit]

@Grin: Special:Diff/788933877 by Túrelio added the command. Special:Diff/788933935 by CommonsDelinker removed the command with the comment Removing replace commands, will be executed soon. I can however see that Special:GlobalUsage/CA River Plate.svg has 27 hits on dewiki and Special:WhatLinksHere/File:CA River Plate.svg has 5 hits here on Commons. I checked its logs and the bot did in fact update the filename in some instances, but not in some. It says that 13 instances were skipped, but that's less than the 27 uses anyway. Why is there still 27+5 uses of the file and can't the bot update them? Jonteemil (talk) 15:11, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel Which ones? —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 20:03, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
At the time I posted that, I believe the answer was all that had been posted in the relevant time frame, though admittedly something I hadn't touched might have run successfully without my noticing. I re-added one that I was concerned with, and it got taken care of later that day. I believe all the others someone eventually dealt with by hand. If it's working correctly now, then probably no ongoing problem. - Jmabel ! talk 21:41, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Precarious state of the bot that moves categories

[edit]

Just a reminder that while User: Legoktm has temporarily fixed the bot that moves categories, it is his opinion that it will certainly break again within a few months, and to my knowledge no one has volunteered to take it over. Various discussions about that situation can be found in the archives of the Village pump over the last few months. The most salient is probably Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2023/11#User_talk:CommonsDelinker/commands; see also the earlier Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2023/09#User:CommonsDelinker/commands_appears_to_be_down and Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2023/09#Stalled_category_moves. - Jmabel ! talk 21:55, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, why does the Bot ignore the Template:Nobots (for example)? -- Ra'ike T C 10:59, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ra'ike: you'd probably have to talk to the operator of the relevant bot rather than the page where tasks are listed. Several different bots take on tasks from this page. - Jmabel ! talk 19:54, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel and @Ra'ike: In this case, the part that delinks files which have been deleted.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:01, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G. and Jmabel: I don't know, which bots work under the name of CommonsDelinker, but I hope, these operators observe the discussion page here. It is the CommonsDelinker, who removes the links to the files on a page, where it is forbidden for bots with {{nobots}}. I would like to remove the links myself once I have edited the relevant sections. Greetings -- Ra'ike T C 06:22, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging @Grin per the top matter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:55, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can you help me understand why do you intend to keep broken links? The problem is that I am not sure that this template is being handled by the bot so it would require implementing a very different logic, and I'd rather avoid that unless absolutely needed (and justified). (I will check anyway, but it has low priority.) grin 11:04, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Implemented anyway, deploying soon(ish). grin 20:40, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

File renamed error

[edit]

Hello, the file Racing_Club_1913.jpg was renamed as Argentino_de_quilmes_1917.jpg, but it's actually a mistake. The image is precisely from Racing Club, not from Argentino de Quilmes [1][2]. References

@WIKI-WOLVERINE: File:Racing Club 1913.jpg was renamed to File:Argentino de quilmes 1917.jpg by Richardkiwi due to "(obvious error) · an updated image source ([4]) indicates it is not Racing club but "Argentino de Quilmes", a team with similar shirt colors" at the request of Fma12. Thank you for fixing the mistake. :) Fma12 (talk) 23:27, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fma12: the image es from Racing Club I don't understand the reason for your confusion. The sixth person in the photo is Corbatta, who always appeared in the photos pointing to the side in disagreement with the press. [5] I leave a photo from 1915, two years before that photo and you can see the Racing team. I also gave you two references, one from the club's official website[6] and another from a prestigious newspaper[7] in my country (TN). Regards --Wolverine (talk) 23:53, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Saludos, Fma12 (talk) 00:07, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please limit usage on Wikisource

[edit]

I had to revert this edit on the English Wikisource because it completely broke the film transcription there. The file File:The_Gold_Rush_(1925).webm is not even close to being a duplicate, just a "scaled-down version" if you can call it that, since the HD version is a completely different video with a different length even. Please set up the code of CommonsDelinker so that it doesn't change files on enWS, unless the original file has actually been deleted at Commons, so that such page-breaking problems aren't caused so much in the future. PseudoSkull (talk) 04:25, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It also broke The Lost World (1925 film) recently, a problem which was fixed by moving lots of pages. But this shouldn't be necessary. The two files in this case weren't even deleted, so they didn't need to be automatically delinked on pages with such an intimate relationship with the source material. PseudoSkull (talk) 04:27, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The bot is working as intended to replace files when commanded by an admin, but admins are only supposed to do that when it doesn't break things. @Yann: why did you do this? —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 01:23, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And also Yann, could you please go through https://guc.toolforge.org/?by=date&user=CommonsDelinker from 00:31-00:35, 03 Jan 2024 and make sure you didn't break anything else? —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 01:26, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that, but how are we supposed globally to replace a file? Wikisource should indeed be excluded from replacement by CommonsDelinker. Yann (talk) 10:14, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mdaniels5757 and Yann: Thanks for the responses; this clears a lot up. Yes, I'd second the notion to exclude replacement on Wikisource of video and PDF/DJVU scan files, unless those files are deleted in place of a new one (which usually shouldn't happen either tbh). Is this possible? PseudoSkull (talk) 21:58, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the report! I have excluded wikisource completely, or at least I strongly hope so. grin 16:49, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of an innocent file mentioned in a deletion request?

It's not "still" but "again" (was running for at least a day when I checked).
It is highly annoying, the code don't (and seemingly can't) handle timeouts and the mediawiki api either waits forever or confuse the poor bot. Since it's "running" (doing nothing) I don't even notice the problem.
Aaanyway. Now I'll be butal with it and try to notice instead whether there was any changes in the last whatever time period. That should do for now, and I'll try to find some time to rewrite it, because this problem seems unfixable (the problem is not in the bot but the API library). (So, hopefully it will not stay stuck from now on.) grin 12:23, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't seen the code myself, nor do I know what language it's in, but if it's possible, I would consider the use of a cancellation token (or the equivalent thereof) for this problem. holly {chat} 17:54, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Grin: Sorry to keep bothering you with this, but while CommonsDelinker is now removing the requests from the commands page, it doesn't seem like it's actually doing the replacements. For example, this edit where it removed a bunch of my requests, but File:Presa Aldeadávila desembalsando.JPG is used on es:Anexo:Edificios más altos de España, and the history shows the bot hasn't touched the page. holly {chat} 19:03, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

But the bot touched, for example, this page, so it may be related to the extreme timeouts. I will check the specifics and the logs but it doesn't seem to be a general problem. grin 00:37, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will not detail the mess I have found, let's just summarize it as "some replacements were not done due to bugs older than some of us". They have been, well, partly fixed, partly worked around.
Anyway. It is advised to put back replacements where you feel it was only partially done, and the bot will try it again. I cannot trigger it since it didn't even enter its database. Don't ask.
Thank you for your report! grin 02:04, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete

[edit]

@CommonsDelinker and @Grin Please delete image File:Keratuan Darah Putih dalam Aksara Lampung.png, because of an error in the script and I will update it Daeng Hanif (talk) 14:46, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Would you care to provide a little more explanation and background? What error in what script, and why don't you add it simply to the command queue of CommonsDelinker? Thank you! grin 12:54, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary cut off

[edit]

I noticed that this edit summary by CommonsDelinker was cut off, I assume because the filename was so long it hit the character limit. Is it worth adding a check for character count, and if reached, shortening enough of the piped link so that the full message shows?

Alternatively, removing the pipe completely would save even more bytes. It just seems to be hiding the File: prefix, which I don't think is a big deal to display, but I am not familiar with Commons policies. Iiii I I I (talk) 17:21, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

File replacement only for fr.wikibooks.org

[edit]

Hi @CommonsDelinker and @Grin

Can the bot be configured to stop removing images, and only do image replacement ? Community on fr.wikibooks.org decided it would be better to let the red links when an image/file is deleted, in order to show images that should be replaced. There is no enough active users to follow wiki pages and image deletion on the wiki.

--  ◄ David L • discuter ► 17:07, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It can be definitely requested that the bot skips a wiki altogether.
It would probably be not very hard to implement selective skips but maybe the opinion of 5 (five) persons isn't very wide reaching. Could you assure somehow that this is the sentiment of the editors there and not just some kind of lightly amplified personal preference?
Merci! grin 18:18, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is not enough active users on the wiki. This is why this request has been done, there is no one to see image deletion and make replacement.
Red links are preferable to show missing images than no images.

Can you use this for a Balinese language distribution map? 140.213.150.78 04:37, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

very strange edit

It was renamed. grin 10:21, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, wrong link. First change of Delinker next edit was wrong. Malarz pl (talk) 16:44, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh my goodness. Well, it has been an extremely bad idea to put a semicolon into the name of the image, but it seems the problem is beyond that.
If I see correctly the original renamed image (#1: Plik:Flag_of_Tajikistan_(1991–1992).svg) is or was a redirect to the image in question (#2: Plik:Flag of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (1953–1991); Flag of Tajikistan (1991–1992).svg) and the original was renamed to another file (#3: Plik:Flag of Tajikistan (1991–1992, variant).svg), probably before it has been submitted to the bot. So the bot checks the image to be renamed (#1), which is a redirect to another image (#3), so the bot follows the redirect, then tries to fix up the rename (from #1 to #2), and found the pattern in the target page (#3), so processed the change; it has verified that the name is "standalone": it starts with either "File:" (or equivalent) or a separator (among others, a semicolon), it looked fine, so did the change. At least that's what I think have happened.
This is probably very hard to fix without breaking all other forms using semicolons or colons as listing multiple images. I may try it but it's already a mess, trying to match various forms of image references, from direct links through galleries to template parameters. Do not trust to hope, as Éomer said. grin 17:18, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

False positive

[edit]

Hello, first of all, thanks for your work. However there were a tricky edit on fr:Giovanni Boldini. One picture should be replaced, and your bot did it, but a second picture with a partial identical name were edited also, creating a red link. Maybe in your regex, add ":" and "^" as condition for prefix ? Sisyph (talk) 09:49, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
