Not finding archived discussion
Hi! I was looking for a thread I started on Village pump but could not find it on the page so I thought it was archived. So I dived to Commons:Village pump/Archive. There is a search box but it would not locate my thread. Turns out it is in Commons:Village pump/Archive/2020/((month:)).
That's a strange name for a page, eh? Why did the search not find it? It says Only searching in pages whose title starts with "Commons:Village pump/" and that would seem include the page it is on. --Palosirkka (talk) 08:40, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
- That is due to invalid syntax in the archive template. The offending edit is Special:Diff/508003029, which I reverted just now.--Snaevar (talk) 12:54, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
Javascript runtime error
Since yesterday, I've been getting a Javascript runtime error on every page on Commons. This breaks various Javascript-based functions of the site, such as HotCat. It's only on this computer (not my laptop), and only on Commons (not enwiki). Cache purge did not fix it. I would try changing my skin, but the Preferences page appears Javascript-dependent and is nonfunctional. Anyone have any other ideas?

Abuse filter rejected TimedText
Hi, so while making a TimedText for Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I get a warning that the TimedText is invalid, so I rechecked it, nothing wrong, so I resubmit the TimedText. The next warning said that the AbuseFilter has blocked my edit, can someone input the following TimedText?

- According to the rule that prevented your edit, hours, minutes and seconds should always be two-digit (i.e.
01
instead of1
). I don’t know whether one-digit values are actually invalid, but this is how Rillke programmed it. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:29, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser uses very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It could lead to downgrade attacks. Since October 29, 2020, users who use old TLS versions will not be able to connect to Wikimedia projects. A list of browser recommendations is available. All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects. [1]
- There is a new automatic tracking category available: Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments. It collects pages which use the
{{formatnum}}
parser function with invalid (non-numeric) input, e.g.{{formatnum:TECHNEWS}}
. Note that{{formatnum:123,456}}
is also invalid input: as described in the documentation, the argument should be unformatted so that it can be reliably and correctly localised. The tracking category will help identify problematic usage and double-formatting. The new tracking category's name can be translated at translatewiki. [2]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 3. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from November 4. It will be on all wikis from November 5 (calendar).
- Administrators and stewards will be able to use a special page (Special:CreateLocalAccount) to force local account creation for a global account. This is useful when account creation is blocked for that user (by a block or a filter). [3]
- The Reply tool will be offered as an opt-in Beta Feature on most Wikipedias on November 4. This change excludes the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias, plus a few smaller Wikipedias with special circumstances. You can read the help page and the troubleshooting guide for more information. [4]
Future changes
- A discussion has been restarted about using a Unicode minus sign (− U+2212) in the output of
{{formatnum}}
when it is given a negative argument. [5] - In the future IP addresses of unregistered users will not be shown for everyone. They will get an alias instead. There will be a new user right or an opt-in function for more vandal fighters to see the IPs of unregistered users. There would be some criteria for who gets the user right or opt-in. There will also be other new tools to help handle vandalism. This is early in the process and the developers are still collecting information from the communities before they suggest solutions.

Technical error with file mover tool.
I am currently experiencing some sort of technical error with the rename/file mover tool, where it is changing the case of characters (ex: changing an upper case letter to lower case) against the intention of the user performing the rename. I have attempted to make a Phabricator report, but I am missing information that would help fix the issue. Is there a main page for this tool, like there is for others such as Commons:File renaming/Global replace, which I could directly link to on Phabricator giving them something to work with? And are there any technical users here who could assist in correcting this problem? Fry1989 eh? 16:30, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- As per the advice on Phabricator, the discussion has been moved to the AjaxQuickDelete.js gadget discussion page here. Any assistance is still greatly appreciated. Fry1989 eh? 20:11, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Error message durring the upload SVG
Hello. I made new barnstar similar to File:Wiktionary barnstar.svg I made before, but it is impossible to upload and I can see error code: "V načteném SVG souboru byl nalezen href odkazující na nebezpečný cíl s datovým URI <image http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink:href=" (what means "In uploaded SVG file was found href linking on dangerous target with data URI" and then after href=" follows code of original picture used in svg). I used the same Inkscape as before. My theory is that the interface recognized picture which is protected by Wikimedia foundation (logo of Wikiquote) and upload was denied - can it be true? What can I do to be succesful with upload as in Wiktionary case? Thank you, --Palu (talk) 11:48, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- Please, can somebody help me? :) --Palu (talk) 21:26, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
I reverted a file but it shows wrong
I reverted a file and still shows old one Baratiiman (talk) 17:29, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Which file? You may need to purge the page and/or purge your browser cache, see Help:Purge. You could try using a different computer to check the page. Verbcatcher (talk) 17:14, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
Problem with the 'Nominate for deletion' link
I have just nominated two images for deletion using the 'Nominate for deletion' link on the file pages (File:Órgano (Parroquia San Ginés, Sanxenxo).jpg and File:Parroquia Milagrosa (Ourense).jpg). The notifications on the uploader's user talk page (User talk:Enciclopedia1993) are corrupted. Earlier today, LMLM nominated another file from the same user, and the resulting user talk page notification is also corrupted. Is this a bug in the nomination tool or something strange on the user talk page? (Pinging LMLM and Enciclopedia1993). Verbcatcher (talk) 17:03, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Verbcatcher: it is caused by having too many templates on one page; Wikimedia software can only transclude a finite number of templates per page. So always archive your talk page once in a while to prevent this, or in case of someone else's talk page, ask for Fæ's workaround. --HyperGaruda (talk) 18:56, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- No need to ask me, it's self-service, just add the category per instructions. --Fæ (talk) 21:52, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
Weird category
Does anyone know why Category:This is a ceramic art comemorating a popular actor from my place of residence on a private building in Canada. is showing up as a category for Commons:Deletion requests/2020/11/07? -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:08, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: One of those DRs contains somebody’s attempt to comment using HotCat. Click the red category to find it. (If you’re real quick, that is: i’m about to fix it!)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:33, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- You can see reference previews. This shows a preview of the footnote when you hover over it. This has been a beta feature. It will move out of beta and be enabled by default. There will be an option not to use it. The developers are looking for small or medium-sized wikis to be the first ones. You can let them know if your wiki is interested. [6]
- From November 16 the categories will not be sorted in order for a short time. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the internationalisation library. They will use a script to fix the existing categories. This can take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [7][8]

File:John Norden's 1595 engraved map of Chichester in need of rotating 90° clockwise
Hi all, as the title suggests would anyone be able to have this file rotated for me? I requested it to be rotated over a week ago now and it says it would be rotated by SteinsplitterBot but it has not done this yet. Am I just being impatient or have I missed something obvious? All the best, TheBestEditorInEngland (talk) 20:08, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
- (Courtesy link: File:John Norden's 1595 engraved map of Chichester.png.) @TheBestEditorInEngland: judging from the messages at User:SteinsplitterBot/Rotatebot, it appears that the bot broke down a few days ago. Maybe Steinsplitter needs to give it a kick … just be patient.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:19, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the speedy response. "Error Bot locked itself after a internal problem (20:00, 7 November 2020 (UTC))." - It looks like I will have to wait until it gets fixed then, thanks for letting me know. TheBestEditorInEngland (talk) 20:44, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
- Ah. I was wondering why File:Zona del cielo Mamalhuaztli.png had failed to rotate in half a day. Apparently the bot hasn't worked this week. I hope our industrious botmaster can repair it, pretty soon. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:42, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
Timeout on upload
I'm trying to upload a file from my a7R II. I did not do anything to its 43 megapixels except for downloading it to my desktop. After upload, the assistent gets stuck at "processing data" below the progess bar and "in queue" for the individual image, changing to "server didn't reply within the expected time" after like 5 minutes or so. I tried Firefox and Edge, both with the same result. Upload via form did work. --Redeemer (talk) 14:33, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
Best practices to upload a LibreOffice/Excel plot to Commons?
Hi, If I create a plot (e.g., for a Wikipedia article) using LibreOffice Calc or Excel, what is the recommended practice to put it on Wikimedia Commons? The most naive way is to export it as PNG or take a screenshot, but this makes it hard for other editors to improve or translate the plot. It seems to me that the best way would be to share the source file (.ods or .xlsx file) somewhere on Commons, so that other editors can edit it directly; but uploading .ods files does not seem permitted. Is there a recommended way to do this and share my source files? Thanks! --A3nm (talk) 09:22, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- To make the plot editable for others then you would use Module:Graph on wikipedia. That template is also available on your homewiki, french wikipedia. Module:Graph can not be put onto commons and used on French wikipedia.--Snaevar (talk) 11:54, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the pointer! But for advanced graph plotting features not supported by Module:Graph, is there something like what I was asking about? --A3nm (talk) 13:21, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- Using {{Graph|type=line|linewith=0}} along with data (in the x and y parameters) would create a scatter plot.
- Alternatively mw:Extension:Graph/Demo/Dimpvis would work, and then the less advanced en:Template:Dot chart.
- Module:Graph is the most advanced graph template on the wiki, so there are no more options for scatter plots.--Snaevar (talk) 22:22, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- There is no average line for scatter plots becouse the software behind the Module:Graph is outdated, that is bug phab:T223026.--Snaevar (talk) 22:28, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the pointer! But for advanced graph plotting features not supported by Module:Graph, is there something like what I was asking about? --A3nm (talk) 13:21, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Google News
Hi, is it normal that I am receiving Wikimedia commons files in my Google News feed? --ValeJappo (talk) 06:42, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

Thumbnail Overview sub categories
Not sure if this was discussed before – however, I always find it extremely difficult to get an overview about images for a certain topic, if they are structured into multiple sub categories – by state, by whatever. Example: I would like to make an editorial choice of images for the images of this random Category:Prisoners in art. I have to click through all sub categories to check and cannot really compare.
What would be the tool of choice to achieve a quick gallery overview over all subcats of a given category?
- Pet scan has no gallery view (at least I cannot find a working one)
- Fast CGI is slow in generating thumbnails and seems to show only a subset (even with "all images").
- Google images cannot really filter for one specific category, it's more or less random what you get
- WLM download tool would be an option, but my HD is already quite full and I'd like to avoid downloading half of Commons ;-)
Any idea? (please ping me for an answer) Gratefully, --Elya (talk) 10:44, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- There is a "Thumbnails" view in PetScan, but it doesn't work well. FastCGI is probably your best bet right now. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:34, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! --Elya (talk) 15:53, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
Stats: absolute number of uploads
Another question: stats.wikimedia.org does not show me number of uploads per year or per month, which would be the most interesting metric for a media repository. Am I missing something? How to find out? I'd like to compare 2019 with 2020 uploads. Thanks (please ping me for an answer) --Elya (talk) 16:33, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Elya, take a look at File:Commons Growth.svg; eventually the creator of that graphic knows where to get the data. --Túrelio (talk) 21:18, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- Túrelio, thanks, I think he uses the Milestone numbers (only). --Elya (talk) 06:27, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Elya: I'm pretty sure it exists somewhere, but I can't remember where. So I just wrote a couple of quick SQL queries. By year by month --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:30, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- AntiCompositeNumber, wow, thanks! These are images, right? How to change it for other file types? --Elya (talk) 06:27, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- Yeah, the table being called "image" is just a historical artifact. It holds data on all current file revisions, regardless of file type. It would be more work to change the name than it's worth, so it stays. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 14:41, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Damaged files - 5 MB upload interruption
In recent days, a lot of newly uploaded files have started to appear again, which are damaged because the upload was interrupted when it reached 5 MB in size. However, the last bug ticket phab:T190988 was closed as solved and the new ticket phab:T266903 is without any reaction.
Unfortunately, due to this lingering problem, the project loses a lot of valuable pictures. This technical issue is related to images uploaded using cross-wiki uploads, which are most often used by new or one-time contributors, who are usually not found anywhere to re-upload an undamaged version later. Is it really not possible to solve this problem quickly and definitively? Or at least stop all cross-wiki upload forms and redirect contributors directly to the Commons form? --ŠJů (talk) 06:20, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

- The iOS Wikipedia app will show readers more of the article history. They can see new updates and easier see how the article has changed over time. This is an experiment. It will first be shown only to some iOS app users as a test. [14][15]
- The Wiki Replicas can be used for SQL queries. You can use Quarry, PAWS or other ways to do this. To make the Wiki Replicas stable there will be two changes. Cross-database
JOINS
will no longer work. You can also only query a database if you connect to it directly. This will happen in February 2021. If you think this affects you and you need help you can post on Phabricator or on Wikitech. [16]

Fix the automatic conversion of some languages' variants
Previously, Wikimedia Commons activated the variant conversion for the pages without the "File:" namespace via {{Autotranslate}} (such as Chinese). However, if we want to read the preferred variants of a language, we must change the variants tag manually, and cannot change the variants automatically. In that condition, it is unfriendly for the readers from the particular regions.
Thus, I previously submitted a proposal that we must fix the "preference" page to add the "content language variant" (phab:T224701) to solve the automatic conversion for logged users; but this task is still inactive.
So, I want to re-propose this problems, and wish that the Commons can solve the problem of the content language variant auto-conversion.
