- As part of cleanup project in ml wiki we recently moved more than 2000 files into commons, unfortunately most of the file name is in ml language. There are more than 1000 files need to be renamed. Thank you. Kiran Gopi (talk) 02:07, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- Not done Our file renaming policy does not permit renames just to change language (we are a multilingual project). Anyone applying for filemover rights should at least be already familiar with file renaming policy. Instead please concentrate on making sure there are as many translations as possible in the information template of each of your uploads. Thanks for your contribution transferring images. --99of9 (talk) 02:21, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- Comment Kiran Gopi & Sreejith is doing a major job with the file renaming, he can help the project by changing the known indic language file name to English, so that all the wikipedians can understand the file (result of picture search) and stich to different wikipedias..as same article can be in many indian languages...(Apologize if i am not allowed to post here) Kalarickan | My Interactions 08:04, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
- Comment The way to make a file understandable is not to change the file name, but to add descriptions in as many languages as possible (e.g. English). The rules prohibit renaming to change the language a filename is in.--99of9 (talk) 09:49, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

- Some files I uploaded I want to rename so they look better, so I want to be a Filemover and be told how rename files. The reason I want to move the files is all the letters are upper case and I notice that is unlike the way most files are named. I named them that way because I copied and pasted from an ocr. I requested that they be moved. I was hoping they would be moved soon. Thank you. -- Chucky 23:07Z3Jan2011 23:07, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

- Hi :). I am interested in getting the filemover right to correct file names which are not very appropriate for the name and do not follow guidelines - such as File:0010ydb0.jpg and other images that pop up from time to time. I have mainly been here as an uploaded from appropriately licensed media from enwiki and copied them to here. I like it here so I am interested in becoming more active and file mover sounds like one of the areas I can see myself doing. I have discussed some areas of the File name policy with other users on the #wikimedia-commons IRC channel and feel like I have a good idea of which titles are appropriate are which are not. I have done quite a bit of work on pictures related to nuclear weapons testing (uploads, categorization, renaming requests, expansion of descriptions) with more contributions in the pipeline. I'd like to make commons a really efficient, complete and useful source for anyone looking for illustrations on this topic. - Thanks for the explanation and comment. However, I feel that perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to dismiss my request based solely on my edit count at commons. Though I may have just ~200 edits here, I've been an editor (on & off) for > 7 years and am very familiar with guidelines on EN WP as well as commons. I have just shy of 1000 edits across the various wikis & believe that my record shows that I can be trusted. Just see the mess with Category:Novo Selo Range, Category:Novo Selo Municipality, Bulgaria and so on, on the theme of "Novo Selo" in Bulgaria. It's very difficult and boring to me to explain and use {{rename}} template, instead of rename and precategorize these files by myself and propose for deletion the excess cats. And "Novo Selo" is not the only mess about Bulgaria in Commons. Of course, I'm also going to rename files after well grounded reasons by other users, if I get the status. - Good afternoon, your renames show you've a willingness to get full descriptive titles, where the Commons rename policy tries to seek the balance between descriptive titles and image name stability, especially important since the InstantCommons activation, without notification or update by bot service on external wikis.
- For example, your last rename request were denied, as the file were already meaningful.
- I suggest you continue to use the {{Rename}} template a little bit, to become more habituated to the delicate equilibrium of the Commons rename practices. --Dereckson (talk) 16:38, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
- Before my last request I asked to rename this file here. The reason was the division of the 2-man image by the de.WP photo shop (requested by me). To my surprise, there is another partition proposal was replenished. I think that almost identical pictures have same file names... and a subsequent application provided for the renaming.
- Anyway, thanks for the insight into the higher spheres of existence of the Commons-Admins. Men gør den opgave alene! Thank you and goodbye, --Jocian (talk) 17:47, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

- I am a Wikigraphist with Graphic Lab (en) and recently requested a file rename for one of my images. In the process, I've noticed that there seems to be a backlog in the "Media requiring renaming" category. I'd like filemover rights in order to spend some time clearing it. Thanks! MissMJ (talk) 21:57, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- You have just 77 edits here on Commons — I am not sure if you're experienced enough at this very project and if you understand the renaming guideline. Please get somehow more active here and ask for the rights again in a months' time. Not done. Regards, odder (talk) 22:20, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- I understand that using the number of edits as a yardstick for gauging competence is a simple enough standard that works in most cases, but I don't believe it's representative in this case. Although I haven't been active on a frequent enough basis in Commons to rack up the vast number of edits that would "prove" my experience with the project, I can assure you I have no issue understanding the renaming guidelines; quite frankly, they're not rocket science. I'm not after anything nefarious here, I'd just like the "Media requiring renaming" category cleared. Whether I do it, or someone else with filemover rights gets on it, I'm fine with it either way. I'm just saying that I have some time on my hands and a head on my shoulders that I'm perfectly capable of using. ;) MissMJ (talk) 00:24, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- I've moved the file you requested. odder is right that we do need a bit more evidence before we can evaluate whether this user-permission is suitable for someone with so few contributions. Obviously I mean no prejudice against you. In the mean time, if you do have time on your hands, there are many many jobs that can be done in Commons without additional permissions. Thanks for helping out. --99of9 (talk) 01:22, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

- I am requesting the right to move and rename files on Commons (File Mover). There are many files on here which need renaming, either as requested by other users, or according to the 7 Counts on Commons:File Renaming. I would like to be a part of that process and further my contributions here on Commons. I have thoroughly read Commons:File Renaming, and understand it's regulations. I promise to refrain from controversial or political renames, and would accept any punishment for violating the right for personal or political gain. Thank you. Fry1989 eh? 23:55, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
- I am concerned by the amount of controversy that you are involved in, so I'm glad you've added your promise. But this application still probably deserves some discussion. Others? --99of9 (talk) 00:16, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- I understand my past disputes have become controversial, but i would like to over-come that. I will accept any views expressed here. Fry1989 eh? 00:36, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- I've declined a unbelievable number of your requests, so I won't formally mark this as not done, but I would be strongly opposed to this right being granted. You have shown, at best, a rather limited understanding of the restrictiveness of the guidelines. Courcelles (talk) 04:18, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- Courcelles and I have disagreed on several nominations, but he has agreed with me on alot more of them than not. However, on those which I have disagreed with him on, I have been able to show that my rename nominations meet one or several of the 7 counts on Commons:File Renaming, and other Admins have often agreed with me, over-ruling him. There are infact a couple files I can show which match atleast 2 of the 7 reasons for renaming, and despite that, Courcelles has denied my nominations (this would show that I infact have a far better understanding than Courcelles would like to imply). I am willing to respect that however, and not interfere with files which he and I have disagreed with in the past.

- There is also the problem of Courcelles' self-contradictory acceptions and denials of renaming files. As an example, he renamed File:Coat of arms of the Marquess of Ely.svg from "File:Marquess of Ely COA.svg". However, he denied to rename File:Marquess of Cholmondeley COA.svg to a similar naming format. Both these files were nominated by me, using the same reasoning, and same new name to be moved to. However, he accepted one (infact more than one, he has renamed several files by the user who uploaded the two I mentioned above), and then roughly two hours later, denies the other saying that "no valid reason was stated". If he can contradict himself within only a few short hours, than with all respect, I do not think he has the right to object to my receiving the File Mover right. - I have invested two years into Wikipedia and Commons, far too much time to throw it all away and do something stupid to get banned. I have nothing to gain from using this ability maliciously. Now, I can already get the feeling it will probably be a no, and I'm fine with that. I'll just ask in a few months when things have changed. But I would like an answer of some sort. - I am requesting the right to move the name of files, specifically those that are images of gastropods. I work a lot on English Wikipedia in WikiProject Gastropods, and currently a lot of snail-shell images have been uploaded to Commons, and are still being uploaded to Commons. It happens in the scientific literature, that over the years the scientific name (Latin name) of species revised and then the older name is no longer good (it becomes a synonym). In those cases the name of the file needs to be changed so that the file name corresponds with the current scientific nomenclature, otherwise it is misleading. Also occasionally shells or snails/slugs are mis-identified due to errors, and those images need to be given the correct name. I am not very experienced on Commons, but I have a very good track record on English Wikipedia. Thank you. Invertzoo (talk) 12:33, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

- Question Why he needs this right, he just has over 50 edits. He may reapply if he has 1,000 edits. --Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 01:23, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- She (not he) just told you explicitly why she needs this right. Giving her the right will improve the quality of image file names and correct the misidentified images. What does the quantity of edits have to do with this? Invertzoo is a highly experienced user and has worked with images for many years. She's also an expert, and this site needs experts to fix erroneous file names. Since when is quantity more valuable than quality? Viriditas (talk) 10:09, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- Invertzoo (she) has a vast amount of edits at Wikipedia, and is very familiar with Wikicommons. Using filemover rights to move files to appropriate names is well within her ability. Plus, consideration over issuing this right is not so much about ability, but more about trust, and trust her you can, indeed. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:16, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- Certainly not very familiar with only 50 edits I would say. I'm sure trust is not an issue but this is about rights here not elsewhere. --Herby talk thyme 12:28, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- Herby, how will having more than 50 edits here change the fact that this expert on gastropods wants to simply fix erroneous file names? Viriditas (talk) 10:12, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- I understand. But, looking at the documentation, the right is pretty sinchy. She's in charge of a massive museum, so her cranial area is gigantic. Would you consider giving her the right, and if she does something horrible, revoke at once, and trout her back to the stone age? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:34, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- I am sorry that I don't seem like an obvious candidate for this. The snail image files would benefit from having the correct names, and being able to use the "move" function would save other people the effort of having to do it themselves on my request. But I do understand if you guys feel that currently I am too inexperienced here on Commons. I can continue to use the "rename" template, and reapply when I have more edits here under my belt. Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 21:10, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

- Not done Hi again Invertzoo. I took a look at your 50 edits, hoping to find lots of approved file {{Rename}}s in there, so I could approve this application. But there were only 2, so I agree with some of the others that more renaming experience here will help. I also join those who certify how expert, trustworthy, and wiki-experienced you are, so I will be happy to grant you the rights when you have another 20 or so rename requests under your belt (and confirm that you have read the rules at COM:FR). --99of9 (talk) 09:06, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
- DenghiùComm (talk · contributions · Statistics · Recent activity · block log · User rights log · uploads · Global account information) (assign permissions)
- Hi at all. I would like to have the right for file renaming to the correct form. I work on categories and files of Italy, mostly of art, archaeology, architecture, and historical images. Often I find files with wrong names (wrong identification, wrong location, wrong attribution, etc.), for example frescos of Herculaneum said from Pompeii, frescos in the Museum located in Pompeii, or paintings attributed to two different painter like these [7] and [8], where I have before to understand which one is wrong. I wish too to harmonize file names of the same art collection (e.g. the Farnese Collection; or the frescos collection of the Archaeological Museum in Naples), or to continue to harmonize unidentified old photographs, following the synthax rules giving by Dall'Orto. If you give me the permission, of course. Thank you very much. DenghiùComm (talk) 07:20, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

- Comment He requests the right because he has - as mentioned above - expertise in his working field. Since when on commons politics are more interesting than good work? Have a look in his over 60.000 contributions and show with links where he committed errors! Instead of going around blaming people that they care about their working fields and systemise them and correct errors. Because that is what he requested via renaming and what could have been easily done and would have done by everyone who had a glimpse about these working fields. Sorry for my frank words, but this discussion creates immense shame, already at the moment that Mathonius thought it is a good idea to comment. And I feel very sorry for Denghiù that his work here is not appreciated in the way as it should be. Catfisheye (talk) 13:38, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
My last comment. I am sorry, but I am not able with my basic level of english to tell you my thought; so I will do it in italian in the hope that perhaps somebody will translate it. Thank you.
- Due to the language barrier, I'm unable to respond on these comments... I feel like my actions are being greatly misinterpreted. To be clear, it has never been and it will never be my intention to offend anyone or to treat anyone in a shameful way. I respect you and your contributions. However, it's very important to understand and respect the guidelines and, in this discussion, you showed too little understanding of point six of COM:FR. My comment on 19 September 2011 is supposed to be purely informative. I wish someone would close this request soon and, perhaps needless to say, I would respect any decision whatsoever. Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 04:19, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
- For the sake of this project, although I really have to do a lot of RL-things: Rules are made to the benefit of this project and to serve the Commons:SCOPE and not to be followed in the strictest of all ways. In his working fields Denghiù asked for renames, which on the one hand provided more information and on the other followed guidelines, which have been elaborated by working in these fields, so they are more or less tacit and if mentioned at all then in Italian. Which might be difficult to understand if you have not worked in this field (we are talking about 19th century / early 20th century photographs of Italy). I found it somehow rude to decline the rename requests because harmonisation of file names serves us contributors, who try to systemise these files, and also every person who is looking for these photographs, because it can be very confusing if the title of a picture differs from the description. We are not talking about 100s of rename processes, but a handful every now and then.
- To sum up, what Denghiù has written above: he just wants a decision, but in any case he will contribute with his knowledge to improve this project as he has done for years now.
- To the sysops: Be bold! If he should commit errors or outright vandalism, you can hang me also. ;) Catfisheye (talk) 01:12, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

- I would say two words seen that Mr. Mathonius with his intervention has created such an embarrassment of all, that after two weeks none of the admin has the courage to say a YES or NO to my request to file mover. I'm not offended if you do not get this little power. Surely, however, I find it very offensive that a person that I never met in my work on Commons, and who knows nothing of what I have done all these years, have decided I am a beginner who does not know the most basic guidelines of Commons and is to be opposed. I find it admirable that Mr. Mathonius, which since few days (from September 10, 2011) has obtained the same power that I require now, he decided to become the guarantor of orthodoxy of Commons, becoming the crusader who will save the Holy City of Jerusalem-Commons from the attacks of the bad Saracen-DenghiùComm. If I am so harmful to Commons, should it explain why I am autopatroller for several years and all my requests to rename and move cat are regularly accepted and executed. I do not need powers of Commons. Already in 2009 I have been offered much greater powers of this small file mover, powers that I have refused to receive. Precisely because I do not care to have the powers or to have a career in the Commons (Mr. Mathonius perhaps?). What interests me is to do my work quietly on the categories and files of Italy, making available to Commons my historical, archaeological, artistic, and geographical knowledge (at least until Commons will appreciate it). If I asked to receive the power to file mover, this is only to shorten the time and to raise the admins from a job that I could do very well directly. Nothing more. But if this little power will not granted to me, what is the problem? I will continue for another 10 or 20 years to do my job on the categories and files of Italy, and when I need a rename or move a cat I will require it to the admin as I have done so far, and the admins will continue to the next 10 or 20 years to accept my request and to execute them (all unless Mr. Mathonius of course). I wish you all a good job!
I rollbacked the archieving of this request. After all the interventions above, and before archiving this request, I request that an admin has responsibility to say a clear and finally word if I have right to become this filemover or not, and say a clear word for which reason I become this right or not. I don't accept that my request is archieved in silence, without explaining why, if my request was not given because I "was highly offensive" and some users say clearly that this is not true, and after my translation all people can see if I was really highly offensive or not. I will accept the final decision of admins without other comments, but I requires a clear word by them and the reasons for theyr decision. Or (after 3 month) a vote is needed about me? Thank you very much. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 08:07, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
- It seems to me that the first thing needed here is an apology from DenghiùComm. Commons is a multilingual project. The Google rendering into English seems offensive to some people, including me. The offense is not just the "crusader" comment, but the general tone of the remarks about Mathonius. So, whatever DenghiùComm's intentions were, he offended some of us. Under those circumstances, an apology is in order. It can be as simple as "I'm sorry I wrote something that caused offense", but it is essential.
- Without an apology, we have an editor with 76,000 edits on Commons who apparently does not understand that when he offends, even without intending it, he must apologize. That is part of being a member of a collaborative team. Such an editor should not receive more powers -- and, if the behavior is repeated, might be blocked. Jim . . . . I am particularly grateful to Jim for his quiet, non-aggressive, clear words, allowing the solution to the problem. Crusader is not a dirty word. For me it means "extreme fighter". Nothing more. I don’t think that I was more offensive with the word "crusader" referring to Mathonius, than with "bad Saracen" referring to me. However, if this word has been perceived as offensive, I apologize officially with the admins and especially with Mathonius. It was not my intention. I only regret that for a word that one perceived as offensive and the other not, the clarification comes only now, while it could be three months ago. And I regret that none of the admins wanted to join the discussion concretely about why this conflict was created, preferring the silence. I remember that it have been rejected rename of files like this File:Sommer, Giorgio (1834-1914) - n. ... - Capri.jpg. Never mind! I return to my work on files and categories of Italy, working with the admins who have appreciated my work, and with whom there has always been the utmost cooperation and mutual respect in all these years. This is my main interest and I think also that of Commons. I wish you all a good job and good festive season. Sincerely, --DenghiùComm (talk) 15:23, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
