PotY2010 - stimmberechtigung

Viele Grüße --Saibo (Δ) 23:22, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

userid usurping question

I'm unable to globally log in from my wikipedia account (RadioFan) and use Wikimedia commons. I've tried creating an account under the same userid here but get an error that it's to similar to User:Radiofan. Looking at that account it appears to be pretty much unused over the past 4+ years and was used only to comment on a user talk page. There are no media contributions from that userid that I'm seeing.--98.101.149.124 01:21, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

You do not have an global account yet: [1] Be signed in at en.wikipedia and click here to create one: en:Special:MergeAccount. Then you should also be able to edit under this name at Commons. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:06, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Limiting categorizations to used images only

Is it possible to go into a category of images and then limit it to currently used images only? – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 21:34, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Unable to determine licensing for screen shots.

Images in Category:Screenshots of MediaWiki Upload Wizard need to have proper licensing set. I am unable to determine what is appropriately deriving from the licenses of the sources combined into them, such as screen layout, programming, whatever. For my part, it can be completely license free, but maybe not from other part. Please find out, and make it as it has to be. Thanks. --Purodha Blissenbach (talk) 22:25, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Why don't asking before uploading? And why adding flickr-sources? Use Wikimedia-screenshot as I told you on your talk page. -- RE rillke questions? 22:33, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
If you continue violating the guidelines, such as blanking your talk-page and ignoring my advice, I'll bring this on Admins' noticeboard. -- RE rillke questions? 22:35, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Using a file in wikipedia

Hi: I have a Photograph saved under Wikimedia Commons and I want to transfer it to a Page on Wikipedia, I have it linked to Wikipedia under "File usage on Commons" but it hasn't shown up on the Wikipedia page. Thank You. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pattycaledonia (talk • contribs)

Either on the file-description-page click on the wikipedia-logo / reusing this file for getting instructions or add to your wikipedia-article. -- RE rillke questions? 23:11, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

About Turhan Göker's autobiography

I tired to download a file about a Turkish Athlete, who attended 1952 Helsinki Olympics, on Januray 15 and 17, 2011. I knew that there is an evaluation process by the peers but since then I couldn't see any progress in wikipedia. When I search his name, Turhan Göker, on wikipedia I can find nothing about him.

What should I do to make sure that his short autobiography will be place in Wikipedia.

Thank you very much for your support - unsigned

This is a bit confusing. To 'download' a file means to take it from the net to your own computer. Is that what you mean to say? Was it a Commons file (because Commons is mainly for media and audio, not text)?
Nothing is going to happen magically on Wikipedia. I'm not sure whether mere participation in the Olympics qualifies someone as notable to the relevant level for Wikipedia, but that's an issue you'd have to take up first on Wikipedia, not Commons.
By the way, given that you obviously are not a native English speaker, you might consider writing an article in the Wikipedia in your native language rather than (or in addition to) the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 01:24, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Please help to transfer common pic to en.wikipedia

Resolved

hello,

File:Charging Leopard-001.JPG; please someone transfer it to en.wikipedia. Thank you.--♫Greatorangepumpkin♫T 11:36, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Why would you want to do that? It is perfectly valid on Commons, and can be freely included in any article on en-wiki while hosted on Commons. If it were transferred to en-wiki, the other-language Wikipedias that use it would no longer have access. - Jmabel ! talk 15:06, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
OK, I found it [2] It wasn't under "Global file usage", so I thought it is not available on en.wikipedia. Sorry for that.--♫Greatorangepumpkin♫T 15:10, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

How to delete only an older version?

Resolved– Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 21:52, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

It says in Template:Non-free_frame, "After removing the frame, the old file revision including the frame should be deleted." What is the best way of going about deleting a specific revision? On Wikipedia, there is a similar furd template that is substituted, and it is used specifically to remove non-free images that have been replaced by a reduced-size and more fair-use compatible version. Is there a simple template around here that serves a similar function? Otherwise, would one use a certain speedy deletion notice with a specific comment about removing only the older revision(s)? Or else, does one just use the "nominate for deletion" button and explain the older version should be removed? I would prefer to avoid the "nominate for deletion" option since the deletion request will inevitably just sit in some queue. So, any good templates that can be used? – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 01:32, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

It's a relatively rare case, so you could post a notice on the Admins' noticeboard. A speedy deletion template would work, too, though it's slightly more dangerous. =) We should read the deletion reason carefully but an admin rushing to clear out a backlog might miss it. photographs in a book

Resolved– Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 22:30, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

I have a British book, published 1998 and reprinted 2003, that contains photographs of groups of British footballers from 1885 to the present day. Is it acceptable to upload copies of photographs from before a certain year, and if so which license should I use? Thanks! U+003F? 20:39, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

problem with file I uploaded

I uploaded this file: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alexander_Skarsgard_and_Juliette_Lewis_by_David_Shankbone_crop.jpg

but I'm not sure I did everything right. For one thing, it doesn't come up when I search "Skarsgard" like the original does. Could someone check it? It is a crop from an existing wiki commons file. I'm new and a novice. Any help appreciated. Bluebonnet460 (talk) 12:45, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Search only updates once a day. Once in a while, it doesn't update at all, but eventually it should work.
The upload looks ok to me. I'd just remove "Juliette Lewis" from description and filename as she isn't shown in the crop.
Personally, I wouldn't have added my username to "derivative work: Bluebonnet460 (talk)", but the tool does that automatically AFAIK. --  Docu  at 09:08, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Assistance needed in the prevention of alledged abuse in some Haifa-themed files

Hi, this user has been seen in more than one event arbitrarily changing categories in both files & categories in a manner suspected as vandalization. He/she won't explain or summarize their do's. One way or the other, those acts are technically damaging the hierarchy of the categories and undermining the correct reference & order across the image attribution group, see here and here for latest examples. Since I'm little familiar with which page I should adress I would thank any admin interveving with that person to further prevent the alledgedly harmful activity. Uploading a soundclip

Hello, I would like to add the sound of the call of the Crested Barbet to Wikimedia Commons. I have however no idea how to do this. I recorded the sound using a video camera. How do I extract the sound from the video? How do I then upload the sound to here? This is the video I took and which I want to use the sound of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q7YN99AvJM --Michaelphillipr (talk) 08:00, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

You'd need the band and authors to license the recording. This permission needs to be sent to OTRS.
If you can't, please don't upload it. --  Docu  at 09:03, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello, I don't know what 'band' or 'author' you are talking about. I shot the video myself on my own camera. The sound is of a real bird. So can you help me now?--Michaelphillipr (talk) 09:44, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I thought it was music .. anyways. You want to extract the sound from the clip. --  Docu  at 09:48, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

I have extracted the sound from the clip. How do I then upload it to Wikipedia? --Michaelphillipr (talk) 11:03, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Try Special:UploadWizard. --  Docu  at 16:01, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Actually, you first need to make sure that the audio is in a format that we can use. It has to be an open format. Please see Commons:Software#Ogg Vorbis (audio) for links to tools you can use. Powers (talk) 01:29, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. I didn't know it had to be .ogg. I have now successfully uploaded the sound. --Michaelphillipr (talk) 13:17, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Do I need to ask to have new version of image turned on?

I uploaded a new larger version of http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FukushimaGrid.JPG. Does someone need to review it and "move" it? The larger dimensions seem to have taken effect already. (MartinGugino (talk) 21:23, 7 May 2011 (UTC))

I can't edit templates or file descriptions

Every time I try to edit a template or file description (whether by clicking the "edit" button or by navigating to http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Inserttitlehere&action=edit), it doesn't let me edit and instead downloads a file called "index.php". Licensing overlays

I'm new and don't know how to license two overlays I made. I downloaded File:Amarok bw.png and File:Moon Rise.jpg, making two versions of the wolf overlaid onto the moon. How do I license these/give credit/classify/etc these overlays? One source is CC and one GFDL. I have not uploaded either overlay yet. Thanks. BarkingMoon (talk) 21:05, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Let's rename this to the UN-help desk. BarkingMoon (talk) 13:32, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
Please remember: this is not a paid help desk. Just volunteers. ;-)
Generally derivativeFX will help you to upload such derivative works - nevertheless you need to obey the licenses of the original images; the tool is just a help. If you go to Commons:Upload and select "It is a derivative work of one or several files from Commons" you will also be directed to derivativeFX.
With your images you have a problem: one source is CC-by-2.0 and the other is GPL. Both do not "work with each other. Since this is now a very specific licensing related question you may want to close this request here and ask at Commons talk:Licensing. The other option would be to try to replace one of the images by another with a compatible license. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 13:40, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
I used a PD wolf pic and have now made File:BarkingMoon.jpg. I used the derivative tool to upload it and will ask for the first two to be deleted. Tks! BarkingMoon (talk) 00:07, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

 •  Not done - the new version is significantly smaller, blurrier and has a border. I personally think the original version is more useful. -mattbuck (Talk) 00:38, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
 • (EC) No need to delete this file. By the way - your cropped version was with lower resolution and with a strange border around. I have redone it. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:40, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
OK, but, it's a shame the left strap is missing now. The reason why I originally would ask to delete the first big one is the ugly traffic pole along the left side; then I cropped it as a screenshot which led to a low resolution image... The point is that when you recropped, you omitted not only the dark border but a "pure" part of the crossroad too. Could I ask you to redo it plz, now without taking off that little part?... :) (See my low-res version as "limit model") Thanks a lot! /Orrling (talk) 03:32, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Muchas gracias--Chantecler (talk) 18:32, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

On which publications do images published under the Attribution license need to be attributed?

Resolved

Specifically:

 • Do the images have to be attributed if they're used on Wikipedia? Why or why not?
 • Do the images have to be attributed on sites that mirror Wikipedia, like Facebook pages on a BLP subject? Nightscream (talk) 03:26, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Images published under an Attribution license must always be attributed. The manner in which they are attributed may vary. On Wikipedia, you must click an image to view another page giving its author and license information, must like the "Credits" section at the end of a conventional encyclopedia. In news articles and Facebook pages, captions are usually used instead, like "John Doe / CC-BY-SA". Dcoetzee (talk) 08:14, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
So in other words, a photo does not have to be attributed in a Wikipedia article?
And if I find my photo on a Facebook page mirroring a Wikipedia article without a credit, then that's a violation of the license? Nightscream (talk) 08:24, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Right. The Facebook mirror can also link the image to the image description page here on Commons, just as Wikipedia does - but if they don't, they must give attribution and the license name. Dcoetzee (talk) 08:30, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Why does the manner in which it is attributed vary? Why does merely linking the photo to the Commons page constitute attribution in some cases, and not in others? The Attribution license terms listed on an image's page says, "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor". Nightscream (talk) 05:19, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
That's not the license; that's the summary of the license. Read the license.--Prosfilaes (talk) 15:44, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

If the summary is accurate, then what difference does this make? If the license itself does not say this, then doesn't that mean that the summary is wrong? Where can I read the license, or where it says that a link is sufficient? Nightscream (talk) 08:00, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Nightscream (talk) 23:56, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
Can someone please answer my question within the time frame needed to prevent this thread from being automatically archived, or is this too much to ask? Nightscream (talk) 07:36, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
In short, yes, the summary is wrong. The author can specify some aspects of how they are attributed (such as the name that should be used) but not exactly where the notice is placed. Contrary to your above question, merely linking to the Commons page is always adequate attribution. Dcoetzee (talk) 09:42, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
And in lieu of that, they can attribute the author by printing the attribution near the photo?
If the summary is wrong, then why is it written that way? Who wrote it? Can we change it so that it's accurate? Nightscream (talk) 18:38, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
The summary is wrong because it necessarily oversimplifies in the name of brevity - I don't think CC will want to change it. And yes, you can print the attribution near the photo as well, in a caption or at the bottom of the article or whatever. Dcoetzee (talk) 05:17, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Please also read Commons:Reuse which might answer some of your questions. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 13:58, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. I think I get it now. Nightscream (talk) 23:55, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Coprights for pictures...

Alright I am a bit confused on copyrights for pictures. I want to update this page: 4. I want to add pictures for all the places. I am a member of a motorcycle forum based is Alabama and my plan was to create a project with it and list all the places on my forum and have people ride to the different places and take pictures for me and maybe get a little summary of the place. Then I was gonna take those pictures and upload them and add them to tables listed on the page linked above. I can and was planning on getting permission from the people taking the pictures. Is this allowed? I think I understand that if I take the picture then it is allowed. If all this is allowed what exactly do I need to put down for the copyright/license stuff? Thanks. WillyT006 (talk) 20:00, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

It would be the best to first remember the people that, in case they publish their work under a free license, it can be reused even for commercial purposes. Then I would post concrete license-suggestions (maybe CC-By-SA or GFDL or both).
How to get and verify permission: If the forum accepts images, please force your mates to add a license-tag to these images (or text), then transfer the image and ask an image-reviewer to review these images, whether the license is compatible with commons.
Via E-Mail: If the forum does not accept images, I suggest you upload them, add to the permission section, send an E-Mail to OTRS with a link to your posting in the forum. Or go to Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard and ask there, what they do suggest. -- RE rillke questions? 21:23, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Commons:Public art lists a few similar projects. --  Docu  at 21:42, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

The forum accepts images. I don't want to go through all this effort to update the list linked above and have all the images removed because the copyright is not right. WillyT006 (talk) 15:02, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Then either ask the authors to create an account on commons and upload here or they should upload the images in the forum or on Flickr, but with an accepted license ("This photo is licensed under CC-By-SA. Attribution: Mike the author" is enough; remember: -nc and -nd licenses are not permitted on commons). Add LicenseReview to the image-description page and provide a link to the photo on the forum as the source. (If license review is passed, nobody will delete the images.) If you need help moving the photos from the forum to commons, don't hesitate to ask me. -- RE rillke questions? 15:39, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Recently Uploaded Images Do Not Appear in Category Index Page

I recently uploaded some figures that illustrate entrenched meanders to Wikimedia. Although I linked them to two category pages, "Category:Entrenched meanders" and "Category:Meanders in the United States," they do not show up on these web pages if I am not logged in. They only show up after I have logged into Wikimedia.

I have looked at and experimented with the links and cannot find what I did wrong. The files are:

File:EntrenchedMeanderKY1Composite.jpg

File:EntrenchedMeanderKY1DEM.jpg

File:EntrenchedMeanderKY1Topo.jpg

File:GooseneckMeandersUtahAerial1.jpg

File:GooseneckMeandersUtahTopo1.jpg

File:EntrenchedMeandersKY2Topo.jpg

File:EntrenchedMeandersKY3Topo.jpg Cristellaria (talk) 15:10, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

They show up for me logged in and logged out. But you must look at freshly opened category pages. Also you did not add the 2 cat's at every file, that could be part of your problem. --Havang(nl) (talk) 15:15, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

New TUSC account - password

Sorry, but how do you set your password in the first place? I seem to have erroneously set up three TUSC accounts in the last few days but am unable to transfer images from ja wikipedia via ?TUSC? Says you need a password but how do you go about getting one... Slowly now... Have load of images to transfer so sounds like a direct upload route might be helpful. Thanks, Pel macolato (talk) 20:19, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Just create a new TUSC account - as far as I know the old ones under the same name will be overwritten. The passwort for TUSC is chosen by you in the TUSC registration process.
Go to http://toolserver.org/~magnus/tusc.php and set up a new account for your commons account.
Probably you set up TUSC accounts for your wikipedia account. But you need to create one for your Commons account here:
Set Language to commons
Maybe this bad, automatic translation of the German help page I wrote for TUSC is of some use to you.

Assuming this means "How can I give my pictures already uploaded a category": to add a category FOO to an image, just edit the text for the page and place at the bottom. Usually people put each category on a separate line. - Jmabel ! talk 16:21, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

It's hard to tell what you are trying to do here. The above would not be an acceptable Wikipedia article, so there's no point really to uploading it there. Here at Commons, we just deal with pictures. If the pictures were taken by you, feel free to upload them with appropriate descriptions, licenses, and a statement that they are your own work. - Jmabel, 16:56, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
I removed the article. You want to include the pictures to your article? You refer to photographs that you created yourself, you must upload them with the appropriate upload option in Commons:Upload. But, as Jmabel already said, this is not an article. You should better work on existing articles, such as Nairobi River, and help to expand this articles. Once you uploaded your photos you can learn at en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial how to include them in articles. --Martin H. (talk) 17:02, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

need help donating images from slide collection

A relative of mine is retiring from an academic career and has an extensive slide collection that needs a new home. He's savy in old media (like slides) but would need help to get them scanned and uploaded. Could you give me any advice on connecting to volunteers in the state of Minnesota (United States) that could help with turning the slides into digital images and uploading them? Liscensing of Company Photographs

Hi - I own the license of various company photographs, and would like to upload them to wikicommons for people to be able to share as they wish as they demonstrate our company work, but I do not want to allow commercial or derivative use - is this possible to do...? If so, what license should I use and what is the code/template? Thank you so much. City Of Angels (talk) 16:36, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

First, a question will be if you have an exclusive or non-exclusive license from the copyright holders and if the license allows you to publish the file under a free license. Second, the answer is no, this is not possible. See Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain: The copyright holder must grant anyone the permission to reuse the work freely, anywhere, anytime for any purpose. --Martin H. (talk) 16:54, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Ok thanks. I do have an exclusive license as of recently, but don't want to grant permission for free use to anyone anywhere. So if I have done this by mistake, then how do I revoke those rights and have the photos in question deleted? Thank you. City Of Angels (talk) 16:58, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Commons:Image_casebook#Book_covers? Unless the book publisher or designer of the book cover released the cover under a free license that it fits to the Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain you cant upload it. There is no free license at the source. Wikipedia however allows the inclusion of such unfree content, start reading about that at en:Wikipedia:Image_use_policy (#4.4). --Martin H. interesting, Saibo, that the Sarrazin book cover doesn't violate the threshold of originality. if i were the book's cover designer i would certainly claim copyright for this special mix of type fonts, spacings and colour. it might look trivial, but it sure isn't Maximilian (talk) 18:46, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Fair Use Image of Demolished Stadium

Hi, I've come across some great photos of the Polo Grounds (a demolished NYC baseball stadium) on the internet, and they are in color, whereas all the photos on the Polo Grounds' Wikipedia page are black & white and this photo would really enhance the article. I don't know if this photo is copyrighted - it's the first one on this URL: http://www.stadiumpage.com/stadiumgraveyard/polo.html so could I use it as fair use? How would I go about doing that? Thanks. Delaywaves (talk) 15:28, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

No free license is indicated, and the picture has the e-bay camera icon. Assume it's copyrighted, and assume that this stadiumpage website isn't even the copyright owner. As for fair use, see Commons:Fair use: it's not allowed here. Maybe at the English Wikipedia. Lupo 15:37, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
How about the next one on the same page? It doesn't have any logo, although it probably is copyrighted. And Wikipedia says that irrreplaceable, low-res photos of historical significance are allowed, so are you saying there's a way to upload photos directly to Wikipedia without using Commons? I hadn't realized that. Delaywaves (talk) 15:45, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
Also copyrighted. Put simply: unless there's a clear indication of a free license by the rights holder, any photo is copyrighted. For uploading at the English Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Upload. Their policy on "fair use" is at WP:NFC. Lupo 17:25, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Question regarding black-and-white outlines

I would assume that the usual copyright policy does not apply to images that consist of a bare black-and-white outline, even if that outline was created out of what was originally a non-free image. Is that correct? Specifically, I have someone's photograph of the crosshair of a gun's scope, and I am wondering if a bare black-and-white outline of said crosshair would be considered usable on Commons. Here is the original image that I'm talking about (uploaded by myself to Imageshack since I don't know where exactly the original came from), and here is the black-and-white outline I created with it using PSP. ROG5728 (talk) 07:01, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

It's not generally correct, that a black and white outline of a copyrighted image is okay. For example its not okay to outline a picture of mickey mouse. In this case its fine, because the resulting image is so simple, that it will be PD-shape. So go ahead and upload the image. Amada44  talk to me 10:00, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
There are already quite a few crosshairs at Category:Reticles, one might suit your purpose. I agree with Amada44 it would normally still be a derivative image, but the resulting image isn't copyrightable so no great problem in this case. But I suggest that you redraw it as an SVG image instead, or draw it with a paint program and save it as a PNG file, either would give you a much cleaner image. --Tony Wills (talk) 11:37, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

East African Blue Ensigns

I am writing Wikipedia articles about ships that initially the Kenya and Uganda Railways and Harbours Authority and then the East African Railways and Harbours Corporation operated on Lake Victoria. The ships flew a blue ensign defaced with either the K&UR&H or later the EAR&H badge. I have found both ensigns on the "Flags of the World" website, which seems to be based in Canada. The terms of [FOTW's disclaimer] allow use of the images if they are attributed, not altered, and I do not use more that 5% of FOTW's total collection of flags. I have failed to find a Wikimedia copyright tag that reflects these terms and conditions. Is it permissible to upload FOTW images to Wikimedia, and if so under what copyright tag? Motacilla (talk) 10:15, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

The problem is described at Commons:Coats of Arms:
 • You have to consider copyrights on the definition, I dont know how old the company logo/flag is and if it is out of copyright in the source country and the U.S.
 • You have to consider copyrights on the representation, thats what your question refers too. The question here is, if such a copyright exists, if it exists the reuse terms of that website are not free enough and not acceptable under Commons:Project scope#Required licensing terms because of "you use the material for non-commercial and non-political purposes only" and "you do not alter in any way the images".
The question is however if the making of the representation is creative work. This very likely sticks together with the complexity of the flag. But generally Commons suggest per Commons:Bad_sources#Flags_of_the_World to not upload any content from that page. You should, if the definition of the flag is public domain, create your own representation (or ask someone else to do this) or you should copy a representation of this flag from an older publication of the company, for example an old annual report etc published by them. --Martin H. Updating an older image - using Wikimedia Commons for the first time

Hi, I am new to Wikipedia and hoping to upload an image to Wikimedia Commons. I want to be sure that I follow the proper copyright procedures and Wikipedia policies. I have (a screen capture .png of) an image that was recently produced and presented by a US federal agency in a large report. The work is therefore part of the public domain. A current wikipedia page has a 2001 version of this same content (uploaded by a different Wikipedia editor), but the image I have is a 2007 version of the data. I am hoping to keep the wikipedia page current by uploading the 2007 data. However, when I tried to upload it this afternoon, there was an issue with copyright and/or the fact that similar content already exists on the page. Do you have any advice/tips for a new user who has already taken the online tour for uploading images? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Edysseus (talk • contribs) 2011-05-20T21:32:56 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia and Commons Edysseus! :-)
in general: It would be best to upload it under a new name and then change the image name in the Wikipedia article (go to edit mode, change it to the name name and save).
I have looked at your contributions and talk page: You did successfully upload it under a new name: File:Epagraph-pesticideuse.PNG. Fine - but the information what is the source, who is the author and why it is in the public domain is missing totally. Could you please describe which steps (which pages did you use?) you did to upload it that "naked"?
Just name the old image name and the website you go your new image from and I/we will correct the new version. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:51, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Problems replacing an image

Ok, its about this image:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eastern_Front_1943-02_to_1943-08.png

I uploaded a corrected version (with correct borders of some states), but after i did that, it was still shown the old version. I thought i made a mistake and uploaded the corrected version again, but the "current version" still showed the old version. The strange thing is, the older revision, which also showed the wrong version before, now shows the right version. Then i tried it another time, and now the "current version" still shows the wrong (old) picture, while all my "old" revisions now show the right picture. Some time ago i also uploaded a corrected version of a pic and it worked, what is happening here? I also emptied my browser cache and used another browser, but this is not the problem it seems... StoneProphet (talk) 13:17, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, I see what you mean. I tried reverting to an old "correct" version and it now shows your latest "correct" version as correct whereas it had shown the same as one of the old "incorrect" versions, but still shows the current version as "incorrect". That is weird. Pass. -mattbuck (Talk) 13:41, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
If you click on the full sized view (not a thumb nail) it shows the correct versions (if not: en:WP:CACHE). The reason why the thumbs do not reflect the correct (but an older) version seems to be a technical problem. If you look at the thumb which is one pixel bigger than the standard thumb on the file page http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/62/Eastern_Front_1943-02_to_1943-08.png/783px-Eastern_Front_1943-02_to_1943-08.png it does work. Probably because this thumb was never used before, was not in server cache and got genereated now.
I have the same at [9] - nothing helps (purging, editing the file page). I wanted to wait some days and then go to the tech guys (server admins). But if this happens with more files I will probably get to them earlier. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:09, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
It is hard to see how many of the same images are uploaded umpteen times. They will remain forever in the memory and cost more and more money for Wikimedia. -- Perhelion (talk) 17:08, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
Uhm ok, but i thought i also looked in the full view, which also didnt changed. Well ok, now it shows at least in the full view the correct version, so mb we simply have to wait. @ Perhelion: Thats certainly true, but i didnt know what to do. :/ StoneProphet (talk) 19:37, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
Perhelion, should this be a joke? :-D Memory is not expensive. Our time is. And that is more a problem to me: such cluttered version histories take more time do understand - but - are sometimes not avoidable. No problem StoneProphet! :-) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:35, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

It seems to be evolving in some way. Picture File:Iguane à Chichén Itzá.JPG this morning had a serious issue, and another completely different picture was being shown there, despite many attempts to eradicate it. It's now properly showing the iguana.
Picture File:Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, Agosto de 2010-2.jpg which is an experiment I did yesterday, but uploaded the original image by mistake, then replaced with the new one, is now showing the correct file in thumbnail and click-through, which was not the case yesterday. It's yet showing the original image in the default viewer, however.
Picture File:Esculturas-orantes-carlos-v-pantoja-de-la-cruz-el-escorial.jpg where I've done some level tweaking still shows the older version, in thumbnail, click-through and default viewer versions. :S -- Darwin Ahoy! 17:19, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Still doesn't work. I guess if it is about trying to find the best way how to frustrate users - you've succeeded. --Alexrk2 (talk) 17:30, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Can admins see deleted histories across language wikis?

I tagged File:Avril_Lavigne_Geneva_June_09_2005.jpg for deletion, and contacted the author (who never responded); so now I'm wondering if an admin would be able to go to the "source" of this image, which is at the Italian wiki and view what the "source" for the image is linked to over there. Thanks! – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 17:35, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

As far as I know, a Commons admin cannot see this if he isn't also admin on the other project. Try to contact admin User:Filnik who is also admin on :it.--Túrelio (talk) 20:46, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Filnik will not be able to tell you more than Vituzzu did (Vituzzu is admin on it:wp). The image was uploaded by it:User:Attila.redegliunni who claimed that the author is Alessio Vissani it:User:Tharis. The text was:

cheers, Amada44  talk to me 21:08, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
You can probably find an admin from it.wp to look at the history but anyway you can look at the upload log on it.wp, and see the original uploader's comment from 22 September 2005, which reads "Foto scattata da Alessio Vissani (Tharis) durante il concerto all'Arena Genève, 9 giugno 2005. GFDL", which is also what the uploader to Commons recopied in the upload comment and in the file description here on 15 January 2006. So, I don't think that the file history on it.wp would tell anything more than that anyway. The mention of "Tharis" probably refers to this user. The comment seems to imply that he would be the photographer. Now, it is not obvious that they are the same person and even if they are, he has not uploaded the file himself and there doesn't seem to be evidence that he licensed the file. There's a slim possibility that the history might show the addition of an authorization from the photographer, and that's probably what you want to verify, but if it had been the case, the uploader to Commons would probably have mentioned it. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:15, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
Ah, Vituzzu, double thanks for the info, I didn't realize you were actually giving me the info I was looking for... simply because unfortunately it didn't contain what I was hoping for. Thanks to all the responses. I'm not sure where this leaves me. If I don't hear back from the photographer, then it looks like I can't prove or disprove the image's licensing. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 21:22, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello. For some reason the uppermost and downmost parts of the map have lost colour when uploaded to the commons. It looks properly in Inkscape and for the death of me I cannot figure out what's wrong. Cheerio Hoodinski (talk) 15:54, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

The background image used to provide the color has been compressed; you can see a squashed Long Island just above the outline of Long Island, for example. Does that help you track down the problem? Powers (talk) 19:10, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Thank for the tip. I'll try to experiment with the settings maybe. Hoodinski (talk) 09:01, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Images have colors inverted

Hi, I'm new to adding images to wikimedia and just uploaded about 10 pictures. The thumbnail for all of them and the preview for some of them are all black like the colors are inverted or something. But if I click into the picture file they all look fine. Here's an example - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vertu_headset.jpg Any suggestions? Danamarie1 (talk) 10:56, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

That image has a CMYK color profile "Europe ISO Coated FOGRA27" embedded. I'd suggest using and embedding an sRGB color profile instead. Lupo 11:11, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip, I think that will work. However it doesn't seem to want to let me replace it with an RGB image. I think the uploader is changing it to CMYK? Is that possible? Danamarie1 (talk) 11:46, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
OK, that looks like a technical issue, probably something to do with the cache problems we've been experiencing. It might clear up on its own, but I'll go poke the sysadmins on IRC just in case. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 13:09, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

changing file descriptions

On 5/25/11 I edited a file description (Petersburg crater union trench crop.jpg). On 5/27/11 I logged in, searched for and found that file, only to find that the previous description had "returned." I then checked the edit history and found the file description I entered on 5/25/11. This is my first use of Wikimedia Commons and I am puzzled as to why the editing I did on 5/25/11 is only displayed under the file history, when it occurred *after* the date of the "original" file entry?

Thanks, Barry McGhan

Apparently, this is the modification you made and it shows in the current version. I'm not sure I understand your problem. Maybe just refresh the cache of your browser? -- Asclepias (talk) 14:54, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
I completely reworked the description of File:Petersburg crater union trench.jpg and File:Petersburg crater union trench crop.jpg. Thank you for looking for the descriptions here, possibly Commons/Wikipedia is the biggest multiplicator for such images in the internet, therefore contributing here is a good idea. However, we should rename the files to resolve the former misidentification finaly. Do you think the LoC title, Union soldiers entrenched along the west bank of the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg, Virginia, will be an accurate filename? korrekte Verwendung von aus Wikipedia-Artikeln kopierten Bildern

Hallo,

BB

IANAL. --Túrelio (talk) 22:29, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Uploaded image counter

Is there an easy way to find exactly how many and what images I've uploaded to Commons? I've seen pages called "Category:Files by User:XXXX" but I don't think I have one. Thanks. Delaywaves (talk) 22:22, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, go to your contributions, look at the bottom of the page and you have there at least two upload counters of the files you loaded to Commons, with gallery. Please be aware, however, that if some user reuploaded one of your files, it probably will not be displayed on that gallery. The same if you uploaded a file over one already existing, it will be displayed in your gallery, and not in the one of the original uploader.-- Darwin Ahoy! 22:27, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
For how many, you can try this tool or this tool. For what images, you can use your "uploads" link or, for a simple list, you can see your upload log. A judicious combination of the different tools should give you the information you are looking for. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:44, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
Also here you can see which images you upload. mickit 09:11, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Can I use these drawings?

Sorry, I have a feeling I should be able to answer this one myself, but I am by now a bit gun-shy.

In some of my articles I want to use some technical drawings of fishes from an FAO publication. On its title page or thereabouts, it says:

All rights reserved. Reproduction and dissemination of material in this
information product for educational or other non-commercial purposes are
authorized without any prior written permission from the copyright holders
provided the source is fully acknowledged. Reproduction of material in this
information product for resale or other commercial purposes is prohibited
without written permission of the copyright holders. Applications for such
permission should be addressed to the Chief, Publishing Management
Service, Information Division, FAO, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00100
Rome, Italy by e-mail to copyright@fao.org

Now, does that mean that with full acknowledgement (which I am more than happy to give!) I can upload the pics to Wimikimedia commons, and then use them in my Wikipedia articles on the species in question? Or do I have to go via some other route?

And if I do use the pics in my article, must I acknowledge it in the uploaded description or in the caption, or both? (I intend doing both, but wish to ensure clarity.

Thanks, I hope!

BTW, Previously I had simply given up on uploading pics, but the new wizard is so helpful with its bulk option and hand-holding etc, that I already have uploaded a couple of dozen of my own photos of plants, animals and geology, and there are more coming.

Cheers,

JonRichfield (talk) 12:56, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

To upload files on commons, they must have a licence for free commercial use; those from the FAO publication have not (Reproduction of material in this

information product for resale or other commercial purposes is prohibited") and you may not upload them, sorry. --Havang(nl) (talk) 13:02, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. <siiigh!> I am just starting to remember how I GOT gun-shy...! Is there any other option for using them, say (legally) uploading them somewhere else? Or asking for specific permission from FAO etc? (Just asking, he says sadly!) There are other pictures that I can take myself, but Hake? I am left helpless, unless I decide to photograph some fried fish and chips locally...! JonRichfield (talk) 14:29, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
There is restricted possibility of uploading locally on wikipedia, it depends on the wikipedia. If you ask permission from FAO, you should ask permission for free use, including free commercial use by anyone; best is then to work with a Commons:OTRS-ticket, containing a declaration of FAO that they give that permission. --Havang(nl) (talk) 15:00, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

PS: may-be you will find a suitable image here: Category:Gadus morhua or at related categories. --Havang(nl) (talk) 15:25, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Hey man! That was really helpful! Not only did it permit me to find some pics good enough for some of my purposes, but it reminded me that I could look through some of the old books for useful pictures instead of sitting back and moaning! Much thanks!JonRichfield (talk) 16:42, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Photograph clean up

I just uploaded File:Abraham & Strauss plaque.jpg can someone clean up the image a bit? I think the surrounding marble should show or the fact that its a plaque gets lost, but it would be good if it was cleanly framed by the marble. Also it would be excellent if the contrast was tweaked so that the writing shows up more clearly, which is the photograph's main usefulness for the Wikipedia article.

On a second issue, I would really prefer if the details were removed, especially my phone model and the exact time I took the picture. Can someone explain how I would remove these details from a file before uploading for my future reference? Thanks.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:37, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Probably the former request is better posted at Commons:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop; someone can certainly do a perspective transform to straighten this, but if you want the context clear you didn't leave much of the wall at right for anyone to work with.
See Commons:EXIF for more about EXIF data in general; as for editing EXIF data, you might have a look at http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/exifsoftware/EXIF_IPTC_XMP_Software_Metadata_Readers_Editors_Extraction_Tools.htm.
By the way, it seems to me that there is enough prose on the plaque that it may raise copyright issues. - Jmabel ! talk 06:11, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
I've tentatively done what you asked, the result can be seen on the right. I'm not exceedingly happy with the result, which still has problems, so if you get a better version feel free to delete it as a duplicate.-- Darwin Ahoy! 06:47, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
I don't think it'll be possible to make it readable from within a Wikipedia article; if the text is important, just quote it within the article. (And if it's too long to quote without violating copyright, it's too long to take a picture of, too.) Powers (talk) 13:28, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Much obliged to all. I will explore the EXIF information and links the next time I am planning an upload. The rotated image looks good to me! As for the copyright, hmm, it didn't occur to me that the text on the plaque itself might be an issue but now that you mention it, I'm not sure. If it's a problem I think the image would constitute fair use in the article, so it could be deleted from here and uploaded locally to Wikipedia. Is there a page on Commons for copyright specialists to give their opinion? (there is w:WP:MCQ at Wikipedia). I'll keep the graphics lab in mind for future, similar image manipulation requests.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:09, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
Commons talk:Licensing often fields licensing questions; you might find a few extra opinions there. Powers (talk) 17:17, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Uploading a 1976 Amateur Soccer Team Picture

I am in possession of a 1976 Ontario (Canada) Provincial soccer team picture. I was a member of the team and the picture was given to all team members without any notices of copyright restrictions. The names of members are not currently listed within the picture itself, but I do plan to add them. I consider this picture and names of the players to be public, because the team members were selected to compete in a public forum. I'm also in possession of brochures that were publicly distributed at the matches, and newspaper clippings. Do you have any concerns or objections with me uploading the picture and the names of team members, as a public document? — Preceding unsigned comment added by InPerpetuity (talk • contribs) 21:25, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Do not upload. Copyright notice or not doesnt matter, the photo is in copyright. See COM:L#Canada. Since you was a team member you did see the photographer taking the picture of you. The photographer is therefore not unknown, this means the copyrigh will exist for the life of the author plus 50 years. Owning a copy of the photo does not allow you to license it and distribute the copy workd wide to others for any purpose including commercial purposes. "Public domcument" also has nothing to do with public domain, the newspaper of today has been published and is public, but not public domain. --Martin H. (talk) 17:34, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Photos of memorial

I have taken some photos of the Anti-War Memorial dedicated in Woodford Green by Sylvia Pankhurst in 1935. The designer and sculptor was Eric Benfield; I can find no other information about him. Pankhurst died in 1960. What licence should I use? RolandR (talk) 01:20, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

According to COM:FOP#United Kingdom, people can take photographs of permanently-situated public statues in the United Kingdom without violating copyright. So the only license you need to specify would be the one you choose for your photograph. Wknight94 talk 01:29, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
(ec) Now its already answered :) If you want to adress the copyright situation on your upload you can add FoP-UK below your license. --Martin H. (talk) 01:31, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
In fact you even should use FoP-UK to indicate why your photo of a work by another author is allowed. I presume this memorial is "located in a public place or in premises open to the public"?
Since you ask which license you should use: You can select one or several as usual for your own works. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:01, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Changing title of image

Hi, I just uploaded this image, but I accidentally used the non-descriptive title that I used on my computer before uploading. Is there a way to change the title, and if I change it, would it affect any articles that the image is used on? Thanks. Delaywaves (talk) 02:48, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

See COM:RENAME for information how to request a title change / rename of this file.
After rename it will be replaced by a bot or by hand in the article. In the meantime a redir will ensure that the image is displayed in the article. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:04, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

File extension does not match MIME type?

I’ve been getting this error repeatedly in the last couple minutes, never had it before. The files in question are new additions and improvements to Category:Icons_for_motorway_descriptions/testing/generic, all of them hand-made SVGs.

Sometimes SVGs don't get detected correctly. If you alter it slightly, it might work. --  Docu  at 18:29, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
I’ll try to play around with whitespace and stacking order — but for simple designs and clean coding there isn’t usually much wiggle room. :-\ There must be a no-no here somewhere, as the images which caused this error are all derivatives from the same. As I understand, this is a bug in wm, not miscoding on my part. My code seems faultless, but I’ll get it validated before any further tries. Tuvalkin (talk) 18:40, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
The one above was accepted without changes, but the others like it still not being accepted due to apparently bogus MIME type error. Also W3C’s «SVG Validation Service has been discontinued.» Tuvalkin (talk) 19:26, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Silly question but are you using uft-8-encoding? With (BOM) UTF or without UTF-marker. Maybe, playing around with encoding can fix it. -- RE rillke questions? 20:11, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Why not using this validator ? -- RE rillke questions? 20:17, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Many thanks for both tips, Rilke! I changed to "us-ascii" (simpler than that would have to be Morse code!), which is (also) accurate, and it worked. Still, the error message could be more specific, and it must be un “unwanted feature” (a bug!) because I’ve been uploading utf-8 SVGs for years with no troubles.
