Extracting a sound file from a corporate DVD production
Article(s): en:Celesta
- Request
- Hi, I need to extract a sound file from a corporate DVD production. The content on the DVD appears to be around 700 MB. Is this something you can help me with if I share the DVD files with you, e.g. through WeTransfer? --Gnom (talk) 22:03, 8 January 2023 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- @Gnom, Have you looked into online tools? If you do a quick Google search on "extract sound from video", you may find plenty of free online tools that allow you to do exactly that. --痛 (talk) 16:11, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Rotating videos
Article(s): [[]]
- Request
- Can videos be rotated? They don't carry the usual options of commands to Rotatebot. If they can, this one needs rotating 90°, please! - MPF (talk) 10:46, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

@MPF: Done. You may find free online tools like ezgif to be helpful for the future. --痛Designism (talk) 19:15, 10 May 2023 (UTC)- Excellent, thanks! - MPF (talk) 21:31, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the new version is cropped to just 4 secones, and is lacking the audio it had before? Can you check what's gone wrong, please? Thanks again! - MPF (talk) 21:34, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- I am so sorry! I tried it again with multiple different tools, but there appears to be something wrong with the video's duration that's preventing me from exporting the video properly. I have reverted my edits. --痛Designism (talk) 23:41, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
Venezuela president recognition map

"Map showing the recognition of Juan Guaidó as acting president of Venezuela:"
Article(s): en:Responses to the Venezuelan presidential crisis
- Request
- Hi! Users that are familiar with the topic know that the presidential crisis in Venezuela has been ongoing for four years, and it hasn't been until recently that it seemingly has come to an end. Naturally, this map: File:Venezuela president recognition map.svg has changed drastically since its beginning in 2019. To reflect these changes over the time, I've thought that an animated file, such as a gif, would be ideal. Are there contributors that could help with this? Many thanks in advance! --NoonIcarus (talk) 22:47, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- I forgot to ask: if possible, an important aspect to include would naturally be the date where the current frame stands. Thanks again! --NoonIcarus (talk) 10:20, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Steamboat Willie (the first-ever animated film featuring Mickey Mouse)
Article(s): en:Mickey Mouse, en:Walt Disney Animation Studios, en:Steamboat Willie, etc.
- Request
- Hello, who can help me upload this animated film? It will enter the Public Domain on 1 January 2024.
- We have two sources:
- The Walt Disney Animation Studios Youtube channel: Steamboat Willie (resolution: 360p)
- DVD/Bluray 'Celebrating Mickey' (Amazon link)
- I would be especially interested in finding a way to upload the high-resolution version from the DVD or Bluray.
- Thank you, --Gnom (talk) 14:10, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- Gnom, you can directly upload YouTube videos to Commons via video2commons. It might take some time for decently long videos (Steamboat Willie is over 7 minutes long!). — Davest3r08 (talk) 14:22, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- As for the Celebrating Mickey home video film, I wouldn't recommend uploading it to Commons, especially if you do not know its copyright status. — Davest3r08 (talk) 14:23, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Davest3r08, thank you for your feedback. As a matter of fact, the Celebrating Mickey DVD contains the seven-minute Steamboat Willie in high resolution, which will be out of copyright precisely on 1 January 2024. That's exactly why I am looking for someone who can help me upload it to Commons. Gnom (talk) 15:30, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- Gnom, oh, okay, that makes more sense. — Davest3r08 (talk) 15:32, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- ...would you be able to help me 'extract' the film from the DVD? Gnom (talk) 15:40, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- Gnom, I'd recommend an application like WinRAR, 7-Zip (or File Roller if you're using Linux, you can use either) or PowerISO, as they can decompile the ISO file with the short film in it (which these DVDs usually have as a base). I think it's a legal grey area though (don't take this as legal advice, I am not a lawyer), since you're extracting a soon-to-be public domain short film and you're not distributing the said copyrighted work by uploading it to Commons until it is in the public domain (I hope). — Davest3r08 (talk) 15:51, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you. Again, would you be able to help me with that? I would take care of the legal side, but I am probably unable to do it technically. Gnom (talk) 16:09, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- Gnom, unfortunately, that's where my knowledge pretty much ends. I'm sorry. — Davest3r08 (talk) 22:10, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Davest3r08: Well, could we have the DVD sent to your house and for you to try? Gnom (talk) 22:29, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Stockton Rush talking
Article(s): en:Stockton Rush
- Request
- This snippet of Stockton Rush talking has background music. I checked the source video, and they didn't mention where the music came from, so we can't assume it's properly free. Can the music be stripped out, leaving only Rush's voice? Thanks. --DS (talk) 13:59, 25 June 2023 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- It would be difficult to surgically remove the music, but the the short duration of the clip and its being barely recognizable in the background at low volume, indicate there is little chance that the clip infringes any copyright. However, if someone has adequate audio editing skills, go for it! RCraig09 (talk) 00:28, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

Best file format for 3 minutes 4K video of building demolition
- Request
A chimney that was 170 meters high has been recently demolished by explosives in en:Leipzig. I’ve lent a 4K camera and got quite nice video footage from the event including the warning siren, the explosion, the collapse and the dust cloud. I cut exactly 3 minutes from my raw footage. It will be a nice addition to Category:Chimney blastings or Category:Videos of demolitions because it has better quality than most videos there, I think.
According to Help:Converting video I must convert the original MP4 to VP9. I tried to do that with ffmpeg
like described under #Linux and OS X command line. The 4K file in VP9 is HUGE although everything seems correct. I am not a video expert. Is VP9 so much worse than H264?? I’ve got these files (specs from mpv
output):
- 3.2GB 4K.mov: h264 3840x2160 59.940fps, pcm_s16be 2ch 48000Hz
- 28GB 4K.webm: vp9 3840x2160 59.940fps, opus 2ch 48000Hz
- 2.9GB 720p.webm: vp9 1280x720 59.940fps, opus 2ch 48000Hz
Which format would Wikimedia Commons prefer to receive?
What could be wrong about my files? Can I create a VP9 file of reasonable size?
Are there any alternatives to uploading VP9 like AV1 or even the original MP4? The help page doesn’t even mention AV1 but in this thread it’s been discussed but I don’t know the current state.

That doesn't seem right. Can you add the exact commandline you used ? For easy upload, try using https://video2commons.toolforge.org, which does the conversion for you. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 19:30, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Frupa AV1 does work now with Commons. So you can try to do it with AV1. But there are some Videos that simply "explode" in size when encoded. Yours may be one of them. You can try to stabilize it before transcoding to webm, or you can split it into parts of - say - 5 seconds and transcode each individually. You may experience that all but one part generates a reasonable file size. If you concat the parts you will probably end up with a video below the 4GiB size limit.
