The file is a duplicate of File:John Penny.jpg; the uploader notes on his webpage http://www.tantaluscoins.com/coins/33331.php that he initially misattributed the penny to Henry III rather than to King John. This image was uploaded first, clearly before the reattribution. (NB: all short cross pennies carry the name "Henricus", from Henry II, regardless of which ruler stamped them) Hchc2009 (talk) 07:53, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:John Penny.jpg hasn't been uploaded yet (it's waiting for transfer from wikipedia). File:Henry III penny.jpg is at a higher definition that File:John Penny.jpg, so shouldn't we keep File:Henry III penny.jpg (maybe moved to File:John Penny.jpg) and delete the lower resolution version at wikipedia? The painter, A.Y. Jackson, did not pass away until 1974. The image is not yet PD in Canada as 50 years have not passed since the creator's death (see {{PD-Canada}}). skeezix1000 (talk) 18:27, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Will look into the issue. Certainly doesn't apply under {{PD-Art}} but may apply under {{PD-Canada}} in terms of Crown Copyright as the works were all created when the artist was in the capacity of the crown (The Canadian Expeditionary Force). I suspect it is highly likely that this example was published prior to 1959. --Labattblueboy (talk) 21:47, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Keep I am delighted that you have been able to confirm that this was a work for hire, and therefore falls under Crown copyright. I would switch the licenses to {{PD-Art|PD-Canada}} and {{PD-1923}}, with a note about crown copyright and Jackson's commission. Canada's war paintings were widely published after the war -- I will assist you in finding more precise information, but in the meantime believe that we have enough for a keep. --skeezix1000 (talk) 16:20, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is not in the Public Domain in Canada (which has a copyright term that goes for 50 years after the death of the author) The Canadian Group of Seven artist A. Y. Jackson lived from 1882–1972, which means his work will not be Public Domain until 2022 Laurelrusswurm (talk) 00:56, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • The works is in the public domain as it was subject to crown copyright. Jackson was made a commissioned Lieutenant to work for the Canadian War Memorials Fund under the Canadian War Records Office starting in September 1917, placing his war work under crown copyright and thus the copyright has expired. Further the works were exhibited at the 1920 travelling Canadian War Memorials Fund exhibition and likely the 1923 National Gallery exhibition of war art, making the works subject to PD1923.--Labattblueboy (talk) 05:06, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep Disruptive nomination. Although it isn't in the Public Domain in Canada, I don't think that is a valid reason to nominate a file for deletion. DLindsley Need something? 19:34, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, DLindsley, but I don't understand what you mean by "Disruptive nomination" ... are you suggesting that this deletion request is trolling?
I see you've asked why I made so many nominations for deletions of non-public domain art files on my talk page. I don't know about anyone else, but Wikimedia Commons is the first place I look to determine PD status. Art files that are not in the Public Domain should not be marked PD on Wikimedia Commons (or anywhere else). The Wikipedia "Group of Seven" page said A.Y.Jackson died in 1972, which would mean his work would not be Public Domain until 2022. But in fact, further research [1] showed he actually died in 1974, which would only put his work the Public Domain in 2024. (I have since edited the Group of Seven Page to reflect that.)
I was not aware A.Y.Jackson's war work (WWI) had been created under Crown Copyright, so I was mistaken in marking those files for deletion (and went back and noted this on the deletion requests). However, there were other posted images that were dated both before and after the Great War that are certainly fully copyrighted at present.
I am not sure what justification you can have to suggest a deletion request for Canadian art that is not in the Public Domain would be invalid. Although Wikipedia articles frequently employ the Fair Use exception, Wikimedia Commons does not because people from all over the world come to the Wikimedia Commons to find works we can legally use. [2]
For myself, I am in full agreement with Wikimedia Commons that staying within the law is the only sane course of action until Copyright Law might be abolished. Laurelrusswurm (talk) 22:10, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This file is capture from Sri Lankan movie which was released in 1962. OTRS-permission from author is needed. Y.haruo (talk) 11:51, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Y.haruo,
That's ritght. It is a capture of that film. But, the reason why I used it not for any personal advantage. Sadly many of contributors of that film are no more including Mr.Gamini Fonseka and Mr.Joe Abeywickrama whose figures are there in capture. The capture has been used for display our respect and commemorate these legends, NOT for dispute of anyone's copyrights. So, I think it's better to let it be there as it is than removal. Thank you. Textlover (talk) 11:04, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have no intention that deny the persons who made this film. Anyone wants to upload files for the explanation of the article. Of course I am one of those people. However, Commons respects the copyright. Even though the Copyright Act will be how severe, we need to obey that. Unfortunately It seems to be difficult to keep this file on Commons.--Y.haruo (talk) 12:38, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have looked at the websites of many (but not all) of the various governments whose "seals" are purportedly shown here and they all appear to be personal work of the uploader and not the authentic seals. Those that I have not inspected individually are all identical, except for name and date, to at least one false version that I have inspected. As personal art they are out of scope. Many are in use, placed on WP:EN by the uploader, but I think this is one of those few cases where we ignore that.

The uploader is the author of the reconstruction and probably published it elsewhere before putting it in the commons. Should we pursue an OTRS email? Or would it be more appropriate to place the image on Wikipedia under a non-free license, if there is no possibility of keeping it in the commons? I doubt this is the uploader's own work. This grainy picture, despite its relatively large file size, looks like it was taken from a television or computer screen. The framing and camera angle (eye-level, whereas the public close to the stage would probably be looking at the players from a worm's-eye view) are typical for television as well. Delete - of no educational value. Alan Liefting (talk) 05:32, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Given the quality of the image it seems we are setting the bar for inclusion in Commons at a pretty low level. Alan Liefting (talk) 07:53, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If we have other photos of Dash 8-100 undercarriages from this view, then I would consider a deletion. Even then, it is possible that someone writing on this particular aircraft type or subject in the Marshallese language may want to use a photo of their national airline. There's plenty of scope and plenty of possible uses by various groups of people. russavia (talk) 08:19, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, but it is setting the bar pretty low for an unlikely occurrence. Hmmm, do we do a cost-benefit analysis on our decision making here? Alan Liefting (talk) 08:27, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the cost-benefit analysis is that you would be preventing Marshallese people from writing about important topics with illustrations from their own country. russavia (talk) 08:45, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A commendable sentiment but is that a likely scenario? Alan Liefting (talk) 09:35, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The most obvious cost-benefit analysis would show that the volunteers'efforts and server space invested in this deletion request is an absolutely useless waste of resources, even if there some likelihood of rightness in the arguments used to start it. Please note that deleting a file doesn't spare any resources, since it still uses the same server space - which is cheap, anyway.
Keep Obviously in scope because it has a potential educational use, as shown by Rusavia.--Pere prlpz (talk) 11:27, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is not "shown" to be of educational use. It is an opinion by russavia and my opinion is that the educational usage is vanishingly small. Alan Liefting (talk) 19:13, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Keep As noted above deleting an image doesn't save space, as deleted images remain on the server, just aren't visible to ordinary viewers.
A couple of years ago an agressive nominator initiated a discussion over an image I copied from flickr of an excursion vessel on the Danube. Their nomination said the image I copied was inferior to other images of that vessel, because the other images didn't show any tourists, while the image I copied was marred by showing tourists. Of course, since it was a tourist vessel, I thought actually showing some tourists was an advantage.
But at the heart of that nomination was a viewpoint that I thought was a serious mistake, which I think I see repeated here in this nomination. They argued we already had enough, or too many images of that vessel. Their conclusions? Some images would have to go. (How many images did they think were "too many"? Well, we only had a dozen or so...)
My counter-argument cited some monuments, like the Statue of Liberty, of which we have thousands of images. For monuments like the Statue of Liberty, the reaction to lots of images has not been to arbitrarily start to delete some, but rather to further categorize them into subcategories. I suggested that if we started to get one hundred images, or one thousand images, of that excursion vessel, we should do what we did with the Statue of Liberty -- further subcategorize them.
This nomination seems to be written from the position that we should arbitrarily cap the number of images we keep of the landing gear of this aircraft. Why would we do that? If the number of images of the landing gear grows large, why wouldn't we organize all the images that are in scope into subcategories. Geo Swan (talk) 23:05, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am not concerned about server space or the actual number of images. I am concerned about the quality of the images that are kept on Commons. We are doing those who use Commons as a resource a disservice if they have to wade through numerous poor quality images. I can see the argument for keeping a poor quality image if it is of value for the rarity of the subject matter but this image does not meet that standard IMO. Alan Liefting (talk) 01:09, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Aren't most of our images presented to our readers in a reduced resolution thumbnail image? It seems to me that this really lowers the bar on quality. An image has to be pretty terrible to look bad in a 300x300 thumbnail.
I spent a few minutes looking to see if we had any other images that just showed the Dash 8 undercarraige. I didn't find one. Doesn't that imply you think this image is literally worse than nothing? Geo Swan (talk) 06:27, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
By quality I am not talking about presentation of thumbnails to viewers or even the size of the actual image. I am considering technical and artistic merit, although image size is one of the parameters that should always be considered. I think it is fair to say the we would all prefer engineering diagrams and studio quality photos of a Dash 8-100 undercarriage rather than this image but in the absence of the former I differ from you in not even wanting this image.
Wikis have a bad reputation for being poor quality (see this article for instance) so if we were to be a bit more ruthless in deletion we will incrementally improve the quality of Commons. Let Flickr have all of the digital detritus. Here at Commons we should aim at a higher standard for a couple of important reasons: we are primary and educational resource , and we have a duty of care to all of the respected organisations that have gifted us millions of quality images to not sully Commons with rubbish. It is not about being snobbish - it is about creating a good quality resource.
So I guess to answer your last question: yes, having nothing is better than the image presented here. Looks at it. A photograph taken through the aircraft window of the undercarriage with an image size of a mere 797kb. Also, how reliable is the claim that it is an Air Marshall Islands Dash 8-Q100 (V7-0210)? Alan Liefting (talk) 07:15, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Given that I identified it, I'd say it's a pretty reliable claim. russavia (talk) 07:38, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I can assume good faith and assume that it is correct. I am curious to know how you identified the plane model and the aircraft id. The original Flickr file does not have any info. Did you have to make some, ah, assumptions? Alan Liefting (talk) 07:52, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Assorted files in Marshall Islands category

[edit]

(:A number of files have now been deleted and may not appear on this revision. Alan Liefting (talk) 09:50, 30 December 2014 (UTC)) [reply]

I am cleaning up Category:Marshall Islands and it seems that there have been a number of files uploaded from overly snap-happy photographers. These files are either very similar, have no context, or are of no educational value:

File:Marshall Islands PICT0234 (4744720737).jpg which I have not put up for deletion, would suffice in the place of all of the other similar images.Alan Liefting (talk) 08:58, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But we make decisions here to set the threshold and by your standards you are happy to delete at least one of these. Alan Liefting (talk) 09:30, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My standards is that we now have 3 photos of an aircraft in this location. I am no more happy to delete any of them as I would be to see any of Category:Boeing 747 of All Nippon Airways at Tokyo International Airport being deleted. This is a waste of my f'ing time. russavia (talk) 09:41, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Where there are many that are similar I have kept the best example. The files are all mainly uploaded by automated means so they probably have not been checked for suitability. Automated uploading seems to be a bad way of getting images. Alan Liefting (talk) 07:27, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The only thing that is bad is doing bulk nominations like this. They are an enormous waste of time. russavia (talk) 09:38, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But obviously, as seen what you have had to do on the files listed above, doing bulk uploads without vetting the images results in us wasting time here to sort out the mess. Hey, your dedication is commendable but lets try and up our game somewhat.Quality rather than quantity and all that. Alan Liefting (talk) 09:45, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Russavia. Most images are clearly in scope and potentially useful, some of them very obviously in scope. This bulk deletion request is a big waste of time.--Pere prlpz (talk) 11:36, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Is it a big waste of time? Eleven of the images have already been deleted so at least something has been achieved here. Anyway, it does seem that I have a different opinion as to suitability of images. It seems that you want to waste your time maintaining a repository of poor quality images. I am more interested in quality. As with Wikipedia Commons has got massive quality problems and given the popularity and reliance of these wikis we are doing the users (those that are not editing) a huge disservice. Anyway, this is getting off topic. Alan Liefting (talk) 19:04, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The painter, A.Y. Jackson, did not pass away until 1974. The image is not yet PD in Canada as 50 years have not passed since the creator's death (see {{PD-Canada}}). skeezix1000 (talk) 18:28, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Crown Copyright confimed Jackson was made a commissioned Lieutenant to work for the Canadian War Memorials Fund under the Canadian War Records Office starting in September 1917, placing his war work under crown copyright. The "Catalogue of Paintings and Sculpture", published for the Trustees of the National Gallery of Canada by the University of Toronto Press in 1957 notes details of "House of Ypres" on page 428. This map is about countries not doing something. That's trivial in itself. But furthermore, it's not to say these countries wouldn't recognize it if such an opportunity or proposal is brought forth. There's no deliberate or active policy of non-recognition with most of these countries besides Azerbaijan and Turkey. This map was created to be displayed on the Armenian Genocide denial page to show that the most of the world "denies" the genocide when it's simply not true, as non-recognition (whether that be deliberate or unintentional) does not necessarily mean denial. EtienneDolet (talk) 04:22, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just as the map that displays the countries that recognise the events during the First World War as a genocide. An example:
The Netherlands where I live for example, never recognised the events as a genocide. The parliament merely adopted a motion in 2004, stating the Netherlands should during Turkey's EU accession talks push for Turkey to resolve the discussion around the Armenian Genocide. The motion even clearly says acknowledgement is not a requirement for Turkey to enter the EU. This motion was taken in 2004. After the elections in 2006, the soon-to-be Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands Wouter Bos stated that the events are not a genocide. That makes the Netherlands denialists as well.
Yet on the map the Netherlands is displayed as a country that recognises the genocide. No government of the Netherlands ever did so.
Another example, Australia released a statement stating EXPLICITLY that Australia does not view the events as a genocide.
Regarding your statement "There's no deliberate or active policy of non-recognition with most of these countries besides Azerbaijan and Turkey." Anno 2014 there is also no active policy of recognition in the countries that acknowledge the events as a genocide. As a matter of fact, it is known that currently in the entire EU only 2 countries consider it a requirement for Turkey to join the EU: Greece and Cyprus. Which has more to do with the Cyprus dispute than the events of 1915 itself.
If your argument is that people can freely build memorials etc in those countries and in Turkey and Azerbaijan they can not. That is true, but in those countries people can freely call it a result of war instead of a genocide as well.
This map is built on the same merits as the other map, just flipped. To avoid the reader being influenced by a bias I believe this map should remain and both should be displayed. Does objectivity and reducing the influence of bias bother you?
The map, as I have said, does not necessarily mean that all these countries actively pursue a non-recognition/denialist policy. We're going to need sources that attest to the fact that Burundi, for example, pursues a non-recognition/denialist policy towards the Armenian Genocide. As of this point, this map does not represent the official policy of any of these countries, but instead is filled with your personal interpretation of what non-recognition/denialist policies of such countries should be imagined to be. So you'd need to find sources for each and every country highlighted in red that you believe pursues a policy of non-recognition/denial. Until then, this map is highly misleading and should be therefore deleted. Also, just because two countries in the EU make it a requirement for Turkey to accept the Armenian Genocide in order to be a member doesn't discredit the notion that most EU counties have already accepted the Armenian Genocide as fact. The 21 December 2004 unanimous decision by the Dutch parliament demonstratively shows that the government of the Netherlands affirms that what happened in 1915 was a genocide, regardless of whether they make its acceptance for Turkey a precondition for its EU accession. A statement by a deputy prime minister, or even Mark Rutte for that matter, can't change that. EtienneDolet (talk) 09:17, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Delete an inactive WikiProject that has a POV. WikiProjects are to improve Commons rather than to push a POV. I would actually be interested in a WikiProject Environment it there is interest. Alan Liefting (talk) 23:21, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing wrong with working on media with some kind of POV, as long as it's not pushing, but apparently this wannabe-project is cruft. One edit almost three years ago, last activity of the only contributor 2013-04,  Delete. –Be..anyone (talk) 15:46, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We should work on media with a subject but we are not here to push a point of view. As an environmentalist I would love to bring the many environmental issues to the forefront but Wikimedia Commons is not the place for it. Alan Liefting (talk) 18:40, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's a dead project, you could update the description as you like, withdraw the DR, and see if it gets traction "under new management" (= you). –Be..anyone (talk) 11:20, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... What is the best option? Withdraw DR and rename, or carry on trying for deletion and create a Common:WikiProject Environment separately? Alan Liefting (talk) 18:35, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing relevant on WhatLinksHere, that would need the redirect after Special:MovePage, delete+new could be faster. There is a non-empty Category:WikiProject exposing Pollution (14 cats + 14 files.) –Be..anyone (talk) 23:58, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
