Category:Members of the Riksdag for the Social Democratic Party now contains a banner with some renaming schema. It was put there by a bot, no human originator is indicated. There was only a red link to a discussion page, and a link to this page, which this not give any information about either. NRHP category moving

What would be the appropriate process to convert all the NRHP categories (and subcategories) starting with Registered Historic Places in to National Register of Historic Places in ?  Oppose "TAM Linhas Aéreas" is the official name of the Brazilian airline.[1] I think "TAM Airlines" is only a name expediently used in English. --Morio (talk) 10:19, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

  • The airline has this logo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:TAMairlinesLogo.png (Also seen here: http://www.infonegocios.tv/default.asp?Dia=8yy8&Mes=tyy6&Ano=1a33&#2951) - And this logo came from this website. For some odd reason its entire website is down, but I will say that TAM would not have created this logo if "TAM Airlines" was expediently used. After all, the logo with the "Airlines" is used in English-language advertisements: http://www.theadmad.com/wp-content/uploads/tam_airlines.jpg Also, to my knowledge, it is a bit late to put objections.     • I did not respond earlier because I am executing practically all the moves myself. Anyway, this category concerns a Brazilian company that has as proper name TAM Linhas Aéreas. Tam Airlines is a subsidiary and started in Paraguay. I guess they use that name for the US subsidiary for marketing reasons. All wikipedia's use the name TAM Linhas Aéreas, only the English wikipedia's use TAM Airlines.       • 1. By "Tam Airlines is a subsidiary and started in Paraguay" - You are referring to TAM Mercosur? Correct? - AFAIK the "TAM Airlines" name is used both by the main Brazilian airline and by TAM Mercosur, but disambiguation on EN names TAM Mercosur "TAM Airlines (Paraguay)"
        • EDIT: Hmm, I see why it would be somewhat of a conundrum. It seems like in all languages the Paraguay airline IS "TAM Airlines" - But for the main Brazilian airline it is only TAM Airlines in English - So the question is not so much about what is in English as how to disambiguate between the two. I still like the idea of naming the Paraguay airline "TAM Airlines (Paraguay)" on commons for disambiguation. Also the domain http://www.passiontoflyandserve.com.br/ for United States readers for the Brazilian airline features the "TAM Airlines" logo, while http://www.tam.com.py/ was for the Paraguay carrier.       • 2. Would you say that Japan Airlines (English name) ought to be at Nihon Koku (Japanese name)? Are you suggesting an amendment or a change to the working policy? By using "TAM Linhas Aereas" we would *not* be using an English name. So in what circumstances would we not use an English name? Why? This is something that should be brought to the wider community. Category:Maps needing categories moved to Category:Unidentified maps

Most of these map images were pulled from Category:Media needing categories and are actually Identified and labeled properly. They just never had a category for people to find or see them so I matched part of the main heading Category name for the one I chose. It should a sub category of Category:Unidentified maps and not have all the images placed in there because of the misnomer. I will add a header to the different countries Category:Maps of (Italy, Canada, Spain etc etc. so they know where to look for more images and correctly place them. I'm not sure whether it is purposeful to make a difference between "ports" and "harbours" or to call both of them in case of a land-locked country as the Czech Republic or Slovakia. Rather it should be maked a difference between freight ports and passenger river landing-stages (and the specific subcategories). --ŠJů (talk) 00:01, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Please closed the discussion at Category_talk:Zürichsee. As we can't seem to agree on the name and it was probably speedily renamed to the current title (without discussion by placing at request directly on User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands, [2]), please restore to the original category name (Category:Lake Zurich, consistent with Commons:Categories#Category_name). -- User:Docu (talk) / en:User:Docu (talk) at 12:09, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

    • The move have been requested by a Swiss user who tried to get some order in the strange language mix in the Swiss lakes. If you look in en:Category:Lakes of Switzerland, you will see that for some lakes, an English term is used, for others the native ones (in the dominant language). As you can see in Category:Lakes in the canton of Zürich, at least all names are consistent now, which cannot be said from en:Category:Lakes of Switzerland. It makes no sense to use in some cases an English names, and in others a local name. And frankly, I am tired of moving those categories back and forwards, so I don't move them again until there is a clear and agreed rule for all Swiss lakes. --Foroa (talk) 13:32, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
      • Before a few undiscussed renames were executed (by yourselves, Foroa, incidentally), Category:Lakes of Switzerland was perfectly consistent with en:Category:Lakes of Switzerland. As we decided that category names should be in English, it seems clear that the name is not "Zürichsee"
      • and, yes, please avoid renaming categories with discussion or without the two weeks notice with {{Rename}}. It just creates more problems than it solves.         • It al depends what you call consistent: till a couple of weeks agoo, naming in Category:Lakes in the canton of Zürich, Category:Lakes in the canton of St. Gallen and Category:Lakes in the canton of Glarus was pretty much consistent. It looks more important to be consistent in commons than being as inconsistent as the English Wikipedia. --Foroa (talk) 13:56, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
          • The categories are fairly new, so they might just have been "consistent" when created. Anyways, Category:Lakes in the canton of St. Gallen isn't consistent with what you are trying to say.             • It looks like the exonym "Lake Constance" is generally known and famous (and has historical context), while the translation to the endonym Bodensee might indeed create problems; as long as there are only "Lake xxx" to "xxx-see", translations, there seem to be no problems. It looks like this name has never been challenged for years. If you change Zürichsee to "Lake Zürich", then you might have additional consistency problems with its subcategories, such as en:Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft. --Foroa (talk) 07:03, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
            • It looks that in en:Category:Lakes of Switzerland, only 12 % of the lake names are existing in an English version, so how can we make something more uniform out of it ? We see that exonyms are more and more used, one can see that clearly on all wikipedias.               • I think, the standard "category names should be in English" was primarily intended for such categories which aggregate more objects. If the category name should be a proper noun of one specific object, more suitable is to prefer the name which is shown in local maps. In medieval times it was customary to translate all names of persons, places and countries. Now it is frequent to keep most of names in the original form: at least within the West (European-American) world. --ŠJů (talk) 09:04, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
                • Eventually, we could review the guideline and decide if we want to change it. In the meantime, we should try to find a comprehensive online resource where we could look up the English language names (as we can do for "Lake Constance" Foroa quoted before).   • The category used to be at "Lake Zurich" and it was renamed without discussion. If we can't agree if it should be renamed to a German/French or Italian name, I think it should remain there. Category:Sinimäed Waffen-SS monument

Please rename: Category:Sinimäed Waffen-SS monument to Category:Sinimäed monument or Category:Battle of Tannenberg Line monument. The current category labels with "Waffen-SS" all living people on the images + the monument, that's not a "Waffen-SS" monument but a monument for the W:Battle of Tannenberg Line.--Termer (talk) 03:44, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Categorization

I would like to make this cat and non-media deletion req. a subcat of cat cfd. I think that would be a usefull structure since all categories related to category maintenance would be in one tree. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 12:08, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

I like that last idea. As CfD is a parallel process, I'd rather not see Requested moves as a subcategory of CfD.
I'm not too convinced about including "Non-media deletion requests" there, as these are mainly requests to remove entire categories of files and a few that missed the right channel. -- User:Docu at 12:56, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

The Commons is not Wikipedia. There are many categories on the Commons with only 2 or 3 subcategories. Cwbm, you wrote: "a useful structure since all categories related to category maintenance would be in one tree."
I agree with you, Cwbm, that Category:Non-media deletion requests belongs in such a category. Because Category:Deletion requests is not as specific. Category:Non-media deletion requests specifically includes categories. Category:Deletion requests is 2 steps away.
I agree with Docu that CfD is a parallel process to Requested moves. So it makes more sense in my opinion that they belong in the same category. --Timeshifter (talk) 13:28, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Move, restore old and recat new category

I made a move request as follows It has been proposed to move Category:Houses in Pyrénées-Atlantiques to {: Category:Houses in the Northern Basque Country]]. Reason: All items at this moment are in the Northern basque Country, after moving, the old cat should be restored and the new cat become a subcat of the old one. It has been proposed to move Category:Accomodation in Iceland to Category:Accommodation in Iceland (the correct spelling of accommodation) since May. Category:Louisiana State University Tigers football and Category:University of Southern California Trojans football

Category:Louisiana State University Tigers football should be moved to Category:LSU Tigers football, and its subcategory Category:Louisiana State University Tigers football players to Category:LSU Tigers football players. The common practice for college sports team is to use the "<common shorthand for school name> <nickname> <sports>" format. The only objections received at the category talk page was whether the subcategory should be named "Players of...", and seems not relevant to the request at hand. The new category would match the article name on English Wikipedia, en:LSU Tigers football.

And likewise for Category:University of Southern California Trojans football and Category:University of Southern California Trojans football players, which should be Category:Southern California Trojans football and Category:Southern California Trojans football players, respectively. --Ytoyoda (talk) 04:34, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

You have yet to address Category:Louisiana State University Tigers football and Category:University of Southern California Trojans football, which was the main point of the request. Though looking at EnWiki, based on en:USC Trojans football, all Southern California sports team cats should be moved to USC Trojans <sports name> (en:LSU Tigers football is still correct). And the corresponding EnWiki cat for the players are en:Category:LSU Tigers football players and en:Category:USC Trojans football players. If your issue is Players of xxx" vs "XXX players", then a more relevant discussion would be over all the subcats at Category:College American football players, not these four categories. --Ytoyoda (talk) 14:02, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

This is very frustrating because you continue to ignore the crux of the request, or acknowledge the two categories that have absolutely nothing to do with your objection. I'm not asking for a correctly name category to be changed to an incorrect name. (Reset indent) Sorry, but I reacted indeed in the first place on the players name construction. I made some additional checking.

  • Concerning {{move cat|Louisiana State University Tigers football|LSU Tigers football}}: although we avoid acronyms on Commons, it is in line with en:LSU Tigers football, so that is acceptable (while it has the word University in its name).
  • Concerning {{move cat|University of Southern California Trojans football|Southern California Trojans football}}, this is yet another name than the one used on en::USC Trojans football. Although I understand your logic, which is different from the case above, it makes no sense to follow your logic until your logic is implemented on en:wikipedia. --Foroa (talk) 07:06, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
