The Suppression of the monasteries, was the set of administrative and legal processes between 1536 and 1541, by which King Henry VIII of England disbanded Catholic monasteries, priories, convents, and friaries in the Lordship of Ireland. As part of the Tudor conquest of Ireland, and to advance the Reformation in Ireland, their wealth was expropriated; deals were struck with local lords, under which monastic property was granted away in exchange for allegiance to the new Irish Crown and the newly established church - the Church of Ireland.
