English: Callan was founded as house of Augustinian friars in Callan by the Butler family. In 1461 Pius II asked the abbot of Ferns to found Callan on behalf of a petition by Edmund Butler. As Edmund fell in a battle in 1462 the honour of being the founder passed to his son James who was buried as founder in 1467 within the monastery. The community became Observant in 1472. The friary was dissolved in 1540. The friars continued to stay in Callan at times and built a new monastery in 1766. See Gwynn and Hadcock, Medieval Religious Houses Ireland, p. 297.
