Streams of Islay almost entirely flow in burns and glens that drain the hills. Where they cross flat land they are typically controled into straight channels, bypassing the previous meandering configuration. The names are a mixture of Scottish Gaelic and Anglicised Gaelic. The prefered Gaelic descriptors are abhainn and allt. In English they are all "river" even though wayfarers may be able to leap over them. As the scarps are many, waterfalls are abundant.
