First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:MF Osafjord(1959).jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Thanks for uploading File:Fusa(1949).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Fusa(1949).jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hello, Toresetre!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

WLM

[edit]

Hei! Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 21:01, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Translating the interface in your language, we need your help

[edit]
Hello Tsaetre, thanks for working on this wiki in your language. We updated the list of priority translations and I write you to let you know. The language used by this wiki (or by you in your preferences) needs about 100 translations or less in the priority list. You're almost done!
To add or change translations for all wikis, please use translatewiki.net, the MediaWiki localisation project.

Please register on translatewiki.net if you didn't yet and then help complete priority translations (make sure to select your language in the language selector). With a couple hours' work or less, you can make sure that nearly all visitors see the wiki interface fully translated. Nemo 14:07, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bryson Tiller

[edit]

Hello. Thank you so much for uploading two images of Bryson Tiller performing during the Stavernfestivalen 2016, i just wanted to know do you have some more pictures of him that you haven't published on the Commons? Maybe there are better pictures where we can see his face clearly? --Eurofan88 (talk) 14:07, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eurofan88. Unfortunately this is all I got of this artist. He's apparently very shy and at this concert no photographers were allowed up close at the stage. Toresetre (talk) 16:39, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, i was just wondering if you got a larger version of this pic? It looks like it's cropped. --Eurofan88 (talk) 09:18, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, for some of my images I can make available a looser crop and/or higher resolution. The terms will be different than the free Creative Commons license though. Send me an email (tore@setre.net) and a few words on how you will use the images, and I'll get back to you with a quote. Toresetre (talk) 16:56, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File:Underworld (224126).jpg

[edit]

Hello. About the picture you uploaded as the main photo of the Underworld band page, the person on the left side of the photo is not Rick Smith. It's their live member Darren Price. Perhaps these 2016 promo photos would be more appropriate and a better representation of the band.

Hi User:DanWiki2011. Thanks for bringing my attention to this. I'll suggest that we undo my updates to the article and bring back the original photo's then. Alternatively we can update the caption so it reflects the name of the persons depicted. I'm very backed up this week, so feel free to look into this now if you can. If not I'll correct it in a couple of days Toresetre (talk) 21:19, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Happy new year!

About category:People on stage, why do you categorize each image than catégorizing catergories? i.e. File:Stian Andreas Andersen Oslo Jazzfestival Herr Nilsen (211532).jpg is in category:Oslo Jazzfestival 2016, so why don't you sort all that category:Oslo Jazzfestival 2016 in category:People on stage? It would be more simple and took less time, no? lol LW² \m/ (Lie ² me...) 03:01, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I haven't given that much thought, but there'll be some images from Oslo Jazzfestival of exteriors, ambiance and such, and those would not fit in the "People on stage"-category. Toresetre (talk) 17:14, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you take a look, there's only this file that doesn't show the entire artist. It's just overloading the cat... --lol LW² \m/ (Lie ² me...) 23:25, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still uploading images from this festival Toresetre (talk) 16:10, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your VFC installation method is deprecated

[edit]

Hello Toresetre, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Aerial photo

[edit]

Toresetre (talk) 19:14, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 i Norge

[edit]

Hi there! I see that you have participated in the Norwegian part of Wiki Loves Monuments in previous years. Thank you very much! I'd like to inform you that the 2022 edition of the contest has just started, and I want to encourage you to participate this year as well!

Photos are not required to have been taken this year – they can be from any time, as long as they are uploaded during October 2022. Maybe you have some more pictures from previous years that can be uploaded for this year's contest?

You can read more about it on the contest page. Thanks, and good luck! Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 17:56, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Toresetre,

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2022, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 150K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 35 countries around the world.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.

Please fill in this short survey and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2022.

Kind regards, Wiki Loves Monuments team, 09:40, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Years in Swedish

[edit]

Hello! Thank you for your generous, high-quality contributions! ⭐

Please just note that i before a year is nonstandard or uncommon in Swedish, so translations of Norwegian captions like "Kari Nordmann i 2024" should just be "Kari Nordmann 2024". Sinigh (talk) 11:55, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
