Hello, TimLee90!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:SAFMPCLogo.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

[Reposted from "User talk:Jacklee#RE: SAF MP Command Logo"] Hi Jack, could you elaborate "too complex for PD-textlogo"? Also, I am authorized as I am staff at Media Resource Department at SAF MP Command. If you need verification you can SMS me at +6581680434. I will be happy to provide you with more details for verification of my identity. Many thanks. TimLee90 (talk) 13:56, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Generally, a logo can only be uploaded to the Commons in the following situations:
 1. It consists entirely of simple geometric shapes and text, and therefore does not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection. The licence PD-textlogo is applied to such logos.
 2. There is sufficient information to show that the copyright owner of the logo has agreed to license it to the Commons under a free licence.
In the case of "File:SAFMPCLogo.svg", I feel that PD-textlogo cannot be applied to it as it does not consist only of simple geometric shapes and text. In addition, there wasn't enough information on the image description page to indicate that you were authorized by the Ministry of Defence (which presumably owns the copyright to the logo) to license it to the Commons.
However, if you do have such authority, this is easily fixed. I have sent you an e-mail using the "Email this user" link on your user page. All you have to do is send a reply to it to my e-mail and to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org using a MINDEF e-mail account (you may need to forward the e-mail to the MINDEF account first). A Commons volunteer will then verify the e-mail conversation and put a notice on the image description page confirming that the image has been validly licensed. — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:01, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The alternative to licensing the logo to the Commons under a free licence is to transfer it back to the English Wikipedia and use it under a non-free logo licence. See for example "Singapore Airlines Logo.svg". — Cheers, JackLee talk 03:32, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
