Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Please consider adding categories
[edit]e.g. [[Category:National Register of Historic Places in Chicago]], [[Category:Schools in Illinois]], or [[Apartment buildings in Illinois]]
It helps people find the photos.
All the best. Smallbones (talk) 02:54, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
- Better to upload photos without categories that not upload photos. Categories just help make sure that they get used - a way of finding the best pic for an article.
- While uploading on the Wizard there's a button that says something like "Add catagories and additional information" Just click that and start typing e.g. National Register of Historic Places in Evanston, Illinois. Brick buildings in Illinois, might work, or Apartment buildings in Illinois. Take a look at some related photos and see what their categories are. But in any case, do upload. - I replaced Category:National Register of Historic Places in Illinois, with Category:National Register of Historic Places in Cook County, Illinois and deleted Category:Buildings in Illinois because its sub category Category:Apartment buildings in Illinois was already included. It takes awhile to get the hang of it (and I'm not very good at it myself), but any category helps to put the photo in some context so people can find and use it (which is likely what you want). Don't be offended if somebody comes along and changes the categories - it happens all the time, and 90% of the time makes the categorization better. Smallbones (talk) 02:55, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
