Dear EugeneZelenko, what is the issue with this file? Can you specify, please? Thirzel (talk) 15:24, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Helmuth Linder photographs with the tag Hungary

[edit]

File:Ungarn. 28.6.1942. Helmuth Linder Russlandalbum. helmuth0054-5.png and others. I strongly suspect that this is not Hungary, not even close. It's the eastern districts of Kursk Oblast of Russia. The date, if it's correct, corresponds with the first day of the Fall Blau offensive, which would be featured in later photographs - also from the very beginning of Fall Blau. Caption Ungarisches Ari, imo, is "Hungarian artillery" as seen in the photo. On 28.6.42, Hungarian 2nd Army was stationed in between Kursk and Stary Oskol, facing south-west, with the German 4th Tank Army (the main Fall Blau spearhead) immediately to the north. Thank you. This is a very valuable comment. As to all the background documentation I could find, you are most probably right. I shall change the location accordingly. Thirzel (talk) 15:12, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Album

[edit]

Hello, I made a category of the Helmuθ-Linder-album. Please se if the used categories please you. On another noteː I saw that page 28 and 29 were misssing. Does that have a special reason? Anyway, thanks for uploading the album and the picturesǃǃ Jeff5102 (talk) 15:15, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jeff5102, page 28 is about bombed bridges on the Seine and 29 are images of Chateau Fontainbleau. Are these the missing pages you are looking for? This is a mistake by omission. I can upload them, sure.
Thank your for making the category, I did not even know how this is done.
One detail, please. I made a terrible mistake with the name of my grandfather. His name is Helmut Linder. But for some reason, there is an extra "h" I added at the end. I realized this too late. Please, do not further this mistake.
I am happy you find these images useful. 83.36.126.190 10:18, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I certainly think this album is useful. There are several photograph albums of the Second World War on Commons, of all involved parties, and mostly of ordinary soldiers/resistance fighters. However, this is the first one I see with pictures from the Eastern Front. I made a whole category of [1] for those interested. The name of the album your grandfather is spelled without a "h" in the title. Al the best,Jeff5102 (talk) 20:32, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Auf dem Vormarsch bei Méry. Helmuth Linder Russlandalbum. helmuth0026-5.png seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

About Helmut Linder/Helmuth Linder

[edit]

I would like to make a category for Category:Helmuth Linder, but I need more information:

  1. Are Helmut Linder (see Category:Helmut Linder, Solingen. Russlandalbum. 1939-1945) and Helmuth Linder (for this new category) the same person? If yes: what is the correct spelling?
  2. Did he made the photographs in the Russlandalbum(s?) himself or did he got them from somebody else and just made an album with them?
  3. Can you tell me more about him? Like: date + place of birth + death, was he just a soldier or was he the official photographer of the army? Do you know a website about him?

JopkeB (talk) 10:51, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JopkeB, good observation. These are the same person, I made a spelling mistake. The "th" is a older German spelling Variation, but my grand-father only used "Helmut", this is also how he appears in official documents. 87.221.250.169 18:03, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reaction. I'll change the proposed category name. Do you also have answers to the other two questions? JopkeB (talk) 18:44, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late reply.
2. Yes, he made the photographs himself, and the notes on the album are his hand writing. However, I haven't confirmed yet where he got camera from or why he took so many images. As I'm very much aware of the role of professional military photographers, I also research in this line. But officially, he was trained as a radio technician. He was very skilled in Morse and other codes, in communication, electronics. But he has never been a professional photographer, not before, nor after. Still, he liked to take pictures in general. What is also strange, he did not really take images that are very useful for propaganda. Just look at the pictures. He shows dead partisans (the pro-Nazi Ukrainians) and Russian POWs alike, he took so many images of normal citizens, landscapes... It's true that he also took many images of airplanes, but this was his personal obsession. (Read my book Russlandalbum on Amazon for more details). Another open question is when and how the pictures came from the Eastern Front to Western Germany.
3. He was official a Obergefreiter in the 2. Armee A. Nachrichten Regiment 563. He was from a working class family (they had a "Kotten"). He was a Russian POW after surviving Stalingrad, and a US POW after WWII. He was born in 1910, on December 23. in Solingen, Nord-Rhein-Westfahlen, Germany. 87.221.250.169 12:27, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! This is the information I would like to have.
  1. I created a new Category:Helmut Linder. Please check whether the description and categories are OK, change them it necessary.
  2. I created a new Wikidata item Q130123198. Please check this item and add more information you want to share, for example his date and location of death.
  3. I moved the photos of Category:Helmuth Linder to Category:Helmut Linder. Please move them to appropriate subcategories.
  4. I created Category:Helmuth Linder and gave it a redirect to Category:Helmut Linder, so no matter which of the two spellings you are looking for, you always go to the correct one.
JopkeB (talk) 10:27, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear JopkeB, thank you for all these efforts. I actually didn't know how to create categories. So, I'm learning from you.
I've also added the date and place of death, which I found meanwhile.
I hope to find the time this winter to upload more images, and hope to add more metadata especially to the civilians on the images. 87.221.250.169 10:20, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcom! See Commons:Categories#Creating a new category (and the rest of this article) to learn how to create a new category and a lot more. JopkeB (talk) 17:46, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. And thank you for sharing the Handboek Wikimedia Commons on your user page. Thirzel (talk) 06:54, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome. Do you read Dutch? JopkeB (talk) 14:30, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Who is this?

Is this a photo of your grandfather? And did he serve in the Luftwaffe? It looks like another editor thinks so. --JopkeB (talk) 03:16, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
